This is a fish market so you can get fresh fish and poke at competitive prices. They close at 3:00 p.m. so they're usually busy and it does attract tourists as well. We went on a Monday afternoon and there was a couple of people in front of us and a small line forming behind us. The employee that helped us was friendly, patient and helped us sample many different pokes, answered our questions and made helpful suggestions. You can get poke by the pound or half pound and poke bowls, I recommend mixing and matching to try several flavors. The sides are sold separately by weight as well. The fish is fresh but not the softest. The pieces are cut quite big, and some pieces are kind of chewy because of that. We tried the spicy ahi and sesame ahi. The flavors are pretty good, but not amazing like other reviews I've read. The prices are reasonable if you only get the poke. If you add sides, the cost adds up real fast. Since this is a fish market, there's not seating inside. But there is a really nice park right next door with ocean view. We went here wanting to be super impressed and yet today's quick takeout experience plus the quality of the food was okay-ish. We were assisted by two unenthusiastic employees who appeared being depleted in their brain power for the day. The appearance looked like that of AI bots; they looked barely humans to the point where their faces had empty stares with no facial expressions. At least they gave us several different samples for us to taste different poke marinades before we could make our final decision. Most of the poke marinades were a bit salty to my liking. In HI, seafood is super fresh and yet everything tasted satisfactory but nothing more. Well, we at least found something interesting. We tried the dry ahi tuna in a prepackaged bag which was almost $30. This was (fortunately) more than decent as we had never had anything like it in the past. If you are looking for some healthy snack which you wouldn't mind spending extra $$ then this might be what you want to pick up at Suisan. This place has the typical fish market atmosphere. As I grew up in Japan, I am used to this type of place so I knew I wasn't going to step into a fancy place. This part was okay so I had no issues with that. Suisan Fish Market is easily the best poke I've ever had. It was so crowded but the line moves by so quickly. There's a lot of staff members and it looks like their customers are regulars because everyone seemed to know exactly what they wanted and the line was moving very efficiently. There wasn't actually even a line. You just step up to the glass when you're ready to order and someone takes your order. Not only was there a lot of variety of different fishes, but there was a huge selection of the flavor/sauces each fish was seasoned with. I couldn't even tell you how many different options there were nor could I decide what I wanted. I just ended up impulsively selecting two different ones that looked and sounded good, and my husband did the same with two different ones from me. Between the 4 options that we picked, all were so good. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the options. In addition to tasting so good, the fish cuts are the biggest cuts of poke I've ever had/seen. They also serve it by the pound/half pound I believe, and they serve sides as well. I liked the refrigerated section too. There were some of the sides I wanted to order but I couldn't justify paying the prices for them, however, in the fridge section, there were some prepackaged ones that were half off if I remember correctly. I ended up buying 2 sides that I wanted but hadn't wanted to pay full price for and was so excited to see them for cheaper. Honestly I wish I had discovered Suisan Fish Market sooner. My wife and I stopped by Suisan Fish Market before heading to the Hilo airport for one last round of poke. We ended up picking up four different items: cooked spicy crab salad, li hing mui mango, wasabi salmon poke, and soy ginger ahi poke. Of these four items, we actually enjoyed the mangos the most. The scoop of mangos we received had a variety of both sweet and soft mangos, as well as crunchy mangoes. The li hing flavoring provided just the right about of sweet, salty, and tartness to the fresh fruit. Although I'm sure the fish used in the poke was as fresh as it gets, we actually had a hard time appreciating the quality of the fish because the fish had been so heavily seasoned. We opted to not get any rice along with our poke order and that ended up being a mistake, as we were having difficulties finishing the poke with how salty each piece was. They are closed on Wednesday and Sundays so make sure you get your fresh poke fix before or after those day. They have street parking and I would highly recommend to go as early as possible for more choices. You can also buy fresh fish filets to create your own dishes at home. The fish is fresh and tasty. Between the 4 of us, we got to try the Salmon, Ahi Shoyu Sesame Ginger, Aku Shoyu, Ahi Honey, Ahi Spicy, and Ahi Cali. We also got the kimchi tripe, purple yams, and seaweed salad as sides. All the fish was very good. My father loved the salmon, and my husband loved the Ahi Spicy and Ahi Cali, although those two are on the saucy side. I recommend trying the Aku tuna over the Ahi if you like a richer, fishier taste. The yams were also very tasty and a good balance to the fish. My main complaint is that the flavor is a little too salty in some of the sauces. In particular the kimchi tripe was super salty even with rice, and I ended up rinsing it in water which ended up with a perfect flavor. And I personally found the Shoyu flavors to be on the salty side as well - since the fish is fresh, I prefer sauce to be on the light side so I can taste the fish flavor, but the guy at the counter made sure to roll the fish over and over in the sauce before scooping it for me. tl;dr tasty, but if you like lighter flavoring like me, I suggest either getting the Hawaiian flavoring which typically has less sauce, or instructing the man at the counter not to roll your poke in the sauce prior to serving. now if you like heavy sauces then order away! read more

Great poke! I particularly liked the hamachi and the lobster salad. I ate poke plenty of times while visiting the big island and this place had some more unique items! I tried the oyster sauce salmon and the hamachi, both of which were really good. Prices aren't cheap, but the freshness of the fish and the flexibility of ordering (you can get whatever weight quantities of each type you want) helped a lot. I got 1/3 pound each of the two fish and some rice. I also got some lobster salad, which I didn't have much expectation for but it's so good! It's like the standard crab salad but with lobster, so sweeter and meatier. I will say the rice was not good - it was undercooked. We were visiting from Kona and went to the national park in the morning so we came here at closing so not much was left but we were able to nab some ahi tuna poke and hamachi poke. Suisan has been known for years in Hilo for having the best & freshest poke, however I came here to show my boyfriend how good they are since he had a "bad soggy" pokebomb here once, and unfortunately I received white rice instead of brown and it was so mushy I couldn't eat it. This some good poke brah! Asked a few locals what they thought the best three poke places are and all mentioned this in place. They all said they run out by 1-2pm. Mind you this is a fish market so no seating inside but there are a couple of benches outside. It is all different type of Ahi preparations, Ahi Hawaiian, spicy Ahi, Hurricane Ahi, California Ahi, Ahi oyster and so on, no salmon. Fish is super fresh, can get poke bowl with rice or poke by the pound. We bought ours and walked a block over to the Japanese gardens and sat in a bench over looking the Bay and enjoyed this delicious poke.
