We ate the Czech National dish here (Svickova) and were pleasantly surprised. Its a goos entree. Its hard to believe that a sweet whipped cream accompanies the meat and sauce but it actually works well. I plan to try to recreate it when I get home. The service was good too. FYI, the restaurants just off the main square are better quality... read more

We went here as the first stop on a beer tour of Prague. After an issue at what was to be our first stop, we came here for 2 beers instead of one. We loved the decor of this bar - fun astrology theme and light fixtures throughout the place. We first had a Pilsner Urquell and then next a Krusovice Dark. I really enjoyed the Krusovice as it is the first time I've ever had it. We did not eat so I cannot comment on the food. The staff was great at getting beers for our large group. One of the tour guides said this was his favorite low key place to have a beer even when not on a tour. It's right in Old Town so convenient for tourists! read more

After finding 3 other restaurants full, we ended up at U Spirku. Looked inside, plenty of patrons, mostly tourists, and the menu and prices looked reasonable. Wait staff not the warmest, but immediately sat us at table. The menu is quite large - more items than most Czech restaurants we've been to. I chose the chicken stuffed with ham and cheese. Wife chose the combination plate with duck and pork. Everything was dry, probably overcooked a bit, and bland. My chicken looked like it was stuffed with Oscar Meyer ham and not much of it. Indifferent service, mediocre food, reasonable prices. One big plus, there was a live guitar player playing American 60's hit e.g. Beatles which made for a very nice atmosphere. Overall good meal although it was our first time eating Czech food. Wife had a salad w feta. Basically tomatoes and cukes with feta cheese, tasty and refreshing. Side note tomatoes in all eateries are so ripe and sweet. Unlike US store and restaurant tomatoes. I had the chicken soup w noodles. Very good and would taste even better in cold weather. Broth was really tasty. Main dish was the pork knuckle. Crispy on the outside, juicy and tasty on the inside. Served with mustard and sweet horseradish. Cut the richness with wife's salad. Had two glasses of their Pilsner. Like a tasty light beer. Went well with the pork. Note I don't drink beer w my meals, however the Pilsner really complimented the pork. Service was great, menu in English. Server spoke perfect English, friendly and helpful. During the week not so busy, but reservations required on weekends, unless you go at odd ball hours. Difficult to find, goggle map download will get you there. Basically within 50 yards of the astronomical clock, but down a side street. In fact there were a number of eateries shops, candy store. Sex museum [really}! Explore a little and don't settle for the crowded noisy restaurants in the old town Square. 20% tip, total cost $51 US. A bargain to me compared to Los Angeles restaurants. We were looking for some typical Czech cuisine and couldn't find any place without making prior a reservation. We were walking by and by looking at the menu (posted on the exterior) we found the prices reasonable (200CZK for svieckova) so went inside and found instantly a table to sit at. We ordered svieckova and goulash and some red wine - the service was very friendly, we got served very fast and could enjoy the lovely interior and the relaxed atmosphere (well I have to admit it was on a Tuesday night, so that could explain the empty tables). Great location with interesting interior. Food was okay. Service slow and not very friendly but the place was crowded with tourists, so no big surprise. Only 3 stars. Why? I don't know. Got to have the tiara withblue cheese spread - better than it sounds - believe me and it's a mild blue cheese at that! Cabbage soup actually tasted like a gumbo which was awesome, and if your a bigger Group that's really hungry, get the Roasted Delicacy (pork knee and ribs)....it says for two, but it's probably enough for 3 or 4..... 1/2 liter Draft beer stays cold and is fricking awesome! read more

I ate at a place a couple of minutes walk from the hotel tonight called U Spirku. This is another Czech restaurant, but as they're few and far between Back home I thought I may as well take advantage of the cuisine while I can. I tried one of the local specialties; pork knee cooked in beer. There was a guy playing acoustic guitar near the door, but apart from him the place was almost empty. No reflection on the food though which was quite good. I never realised how big pigs' knees are. Really, really big. The meat was a little dry and bland, which I suppose is why they serve it with two generous heaps of mustard and horseradish and a side of gherkins. They also threw in a whole red pepper to up the ante on the heat factor. The skin, conversely was the opposite; rich and tasty, but also very fatty and something I personally couldn't eat a lot of. I don't think I even got through half of it before throwing in the towel and asking for the bill, which at 268 Czech Korunas (less than $15) was very reasonable overall. So, at least now I can say I've tried pigs knee, but honestly I doubt I'll ever try it again. Sent from my iPad read more

Nice place with traditional Czech dishes. We went there for lunch and ordered a plate with several meats and dumplings and Goulash. It was great although a little to heavy and meathy for lunch. Still we enjoyed it to the fullest. The restaurant has many historical features as decoration. While waiting, the waiter brought us a little booklet with short explanations about the historical backgroud of the restaurant. We loved the idea, because we were distracted and the starters came in no time. Service was great. read more

The food was decent; nothing exceptional, but fine. Decor is interesting, if a little strange. But when we paid, they tried to claim we shorted them 1,000 Kč, which we definitely did not. It was pretty obvious they assumed we'd just be confused tourists and fork over another 1,000 Kč. Avoid this place like the plague! read more

Waited 45 mins for menus, another 45 for appetizer (which had hair in it), an hour for entrees, and one server took the bread we were still eating from and gave it to a table a couple places down from us. When the check came it had a penned in total that included 10% tip (which also took about 45 mins to get). Considering it was busy with tourists when we arrived, my partner and I can be very patient - I am also a server in a tourist town and know how it can be. Plus we are on vacation, so no rush. But this was pretty sad, and got to the point that I don't see any reason to go back. Aside from terrible service (more so lack thereof altogether), the food was ok, but nothing worth coming back for. The interior was neat, the clock on the wall was the best thing about this place. I usually don't write reviews unless I can say something really positive, but this place earned it. Save yourself some time in spending a few minutes looking for something better (which can't be difficult). read more
