During the planning stage of our visit to Prague, I researched restaurants local to our hotel and chose Mincovna in old town. Despite our reservation, the place seemed relatively empty. We are early diners and the only couple near us were also Americans on holiday. Our server spoke excellent English and guided us through the menu choices. After an appetizer of tomatoes and cucumbers in a light dressing, I ordered the sirloin in cream and my wife the trout filet. The food, like the service, was superb. My hostel receptionist recommended this place and as I traveled to it, I became skeptical since it was in a touristy area. Nonetheless, I entered and hope for an escape from the unforgiving sun on that day. The staff seated me at one of the booths and after I requested some information explaining the menu and what's popular, they were more than happy to assist. They even explained some local etiquette and so on which was perfect for a visitor like myself. I decided to try out their Pickled Cheese as an appetizer. The cheese, paired with the onion salad and bagel was great. I really didn't know if I was eating it correctly but still delicious. For the main course, my waiter recommended a Schnitzel with potato salad. Just to get it out of the way, but the potato salad was almost better than anything I've had in the United States. I thought we were doing it right until I spent one day in Prague. The Schnitzel was also delicious. Perfect with the salad, the provided a blend of flavor and substance I desperately needed. All in all, this place was a great experience in Prague. The staff could not have been anymore nicer as I left with an itinerary on what to do during my time in Prague. We are in Prague for a few days and wanted to eat here after seeing a review on the Viking Cruise group on Facebook. It was a pleasant walk from the Hilton Atrium Hotel, and the weather was beautiful. We arrived and were immediately seated and brought menus. The decor is nothing special, and it spoke to a nice Czech restaurant vibe. Our server was very good, promptly returning to get our drink order (I had a glass of Chardonnay and we both had waters). We were not super hungry, so we bypassed the appetizer and salad selections and went straight for the entree menu. My wife chose the Goulash and I selected the Grilled Chicken Breast. Our meals arrived shortly, and they were both hot. My wife loved the Goulash, which was accompanied by two large potato dumpling pieces. The gravy was thick and flavorful and the meat was fork-tender and delicious. My Chicken was a bit tough, but had pretty good flavor with the sauce. It was also served with a side of Gnocchi, that paired nicely with the dish. The advertised cauliflower and peas were a bit sparse, but the Gnocchi made up for it. Service was very good, with our water glasses refilled frequently and servers asking if everything was good. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal, though the Chicken could have been a bit more tender. If we get back to Prague, we would definitely like to come back and try one of the Duck dishes as well as the goose liver pate' appetizer. Big multi level restaurant serving Czech food and beer with good service and food quality. Quite noisy for fine dining but mild for pub. Settings are cozy, foods are mostly precooked, but Svickoka creamy sauce is authentically Austria-Hungarian . I don't growing up eating goulash and sausage and potatoes so be what it is. Special exquisite Pilsner straight from the tank tastes excellent. Extensive wine menu but I didn't have drink pal. Location is right on the Old Town Square. Yum! We went here for an early dinner (~5pm) on a Friday and were thankfully able to be seated right away with no reservation. We ordered a raspberry lemonade (delicious and refreshing!) and a Pilsner and the fried cheese to start. The fried cheese was good, especially when mixed with the spinach and cranberry sauce, but forewarning, it is very strong & stinky cheese! We walked past quite a few tables and a flight of stairs to our table. We sat in a wine cellar that was repurposed into a dining area. There wasn't anything on the menu I really wanted to try. I decided to go with two appetizers. The first was the goose liver pate. I didn't like the red wine jelly layer. The sourdough bread was also too dense. Overall, it was okay if you need something in the area but it didn't stand out to me enough to say I'd return. Great traditional Czech food right next to the Old Town Square. Traditional Beef Goulash (355 CZK)- This classic Czech dish was quite tasty with tender pieces of beef in sauce to go with soft potato "dumplings" (although they're more like soft potato logs). Somehow they got the potato to be particularly creamy and moist, almost like a bread kind of consistency. The price is reasonable considering the touristy location, although the portion size was on the smaller side. Environment: The interior is pretty large with a homey traditional kind of vibe. There is a bar area and also some outdoor seating as well. It wasn't that busy when I went for dinner and there was a casual atmosphere. Service: The staff are friendly and attentive. The service speed was super fast. My only complaint is that I asked for a raspberry nectar to drink but they ended up bringing me a cherry nectar instead (I ended up just drinking the cherry one and it was fine). I walked in without an appointment, but found a seat right away. I ordered the fresh river trout fillets, cream spinach, and pear juice. The food (and drink) came pretty quickly and was very tasty and plentiful. The service was great too. And I liked the ambiance. Overall, it was a very good dinner for about $40 USD. Came here around 5:30 pm and the host was able to get me seated right away as a walk-in with no reservation. I ordered the traditional pork knee that comes on top of mash potatoes and a sweet gravy with a side of roasted onions. The reviews said it can feed two but I was able to finish it myself (haha). It was THAT good! Despite not being a beer drinker, I ordered the famous Pilsner Urquell and honestly it was such a light beer that I didn't mind it! Which says a lot about the beer! I can barely sip on one back home! After dinner, I was recommended to try the pear brandy (forgot the name, I'm sorry) but it's the only Czech one on the menu. We stumbled upon this alternative restaurant after being directed to a different, and far too crowded restaurant -- and were so lucky we did -- truly excellent food, with great service. Seems very popular with locals, as well, which we always take as a good sign. The server was very helpful with gluten-free, which is such a wonderful experience in Europe -- they take it far more seriously than we do in the States. My husband had the grilled sausages; white asparagus with hollandaise and goulash; I had the duck rillettes (without bread) and the chicken breast. All were absolutely delicious -- the duck was flavorful and the chicken was juicy; the pea puree divine. My husband loved the unique sausages and said the asparagus and hollandaise were silky and fresh. If you find yourself in Prague, and in Old Town Square, you should also find yourself at Mincovna. read more

Goose liver pate and duck rilette was good, but the bread that it came with was extremely dense and didnt go that well with the appetizers. Beef goulash was exactly how I'd expect it to taste. Slightly on the heavier side for a meal. Topped it off with a salad which helped to balance out the entire meal. After a couple days of heavier Czech food, we were delighted with the salad with goat cheese, cucumber salad, and the fried cheese with cranberry and spinach. Although it's located in Old Town and what you'd think would be tourist food, we were brought here by a local and it was excellent. He of course did all the ordering and got us these micro beers that were so fresh and delicious .... though I have no idea how to order. He also made me drink several glasses of schnapps (which unlike the shit you drink here in college, is actually really good stuff in Czech). We ordered several traditional dishes including the duck rillettes, beef tartare, pickled cheese and marinated trout with grapefruit. It was all very good but the standouts for me were the trout and beef. For entrees we had the beef in cream sauce and the baked pork belly - and I'd 100% order those again.
