My first time here we sat outside but decided to enjoy the air con and sat inside this time around. It gives old world Italy with cured meats, pasta, wine and olives all over the restaurant. We order couverts - 50g of prosciutto, tomato caprese salad and the insalata mixta. For the mains we got the lobster pasta, two mushroom pastas (one with shaved black truffle), and the carbonara. All were absolutely divine with the pasta being perfectly al dente as well as the lobster being perfectly cooked. And i dont know how they do it but the wines in the Duoro region are simply perfection. Between the food and wine, Portugal will continue to see me again and again!

Walked right by and kids were racing around outside screaming and parents taking over the doorway smoking. It was too much hectic for us that night. Our mistake. Second try we went in and it was a large very nicely decorated place with a Gelateria, coffee, and dessert bar with staff in the front and the big traditional restaurant behind. Got a table immediately. Staff was very friendly and helpful and they used a sort of tag team service model that can sometimes be problematic but they were very efficient with it!! Decorations of stored typical Italian grocery packages, really nice huge open kitchen which was fun to watch their cooks operate and wonderful tables and decor. Not high end but quality colorful surroundings. So back to the children. The place is very popular with local families that appear relatively middle class and some individuals and couples. Even a couple of one top tables eating there all including a little bit of tourists like us. This is not in the big mess of tourist joints but on the Avenue a block behind the Restoradores strip of very high end shopping and easy to miss if you aren't panting attention. We started with the biggest "appetizer" we've ever ordered! It could have easily been our meal with a huge salad. It's called the Buratta Contadina and comes on a huge plate with big triangles of oven baked pizza bread slices, a huge ball of Buratta (soft portion on bottom and firm on top) in the middle with cherry tomato and grilled zucchini slices and I side gravy boat of some fantastic pesto sauce. I'm not a huge fan of pesto but this was wonderful in that it was mild yet flavorful and an ample serving. If you can eat it with your other food DO NOT miss this dish! Then she had the GAMBERONI GRIGLIA and I got the Carbonara so we shared our dishes. Her grilled prawns were whole in the shell with heads and a slightly spicy sauce finish with a lot of juices. She loved sucking the heads and juice!! I don't adore seafood but these were really large and tasty! About 19 euros and worth it. My carbonara was moderate sized and very good. Likely one of the best Carbonara that we've had outside of Italy and better than my home version. This is a very favorite dish of our family and we are very picky about it. She got a pane-cotta dessert that was absolutely Devine. They have an absolutely fantastic Italian dessert menu and they all look amazing!! If you want just some dessert and coffee this place is a great choice too. Another thing we saw here is that they seem to have great pizzas and their signature dish is this pasta fresco that they do table side for you. They have a cart with a huge wheel of Parmesan on top made into a ball on the top and a young server rolls it over to your table with fresh hot pasta in a big pan brought over the Pass from the kitchen and he dumps that on top of the wheel bowl, adds grated Parmesan , seasoning and cream and begins to toss and mix it all up, very much like one makes a carbonara. Then another smaller pan from the Pass is poured over each individual plated serving and given to the diner with a finish of cheese. This sauce is a really good looking chunky mushroom and gravy! WOW No wonder this is their specialty! One Portuguese family of 6 with grandpa, parents and kids were in a large elevated booth and an elegant table side ss wine bucket stand ordered the same dish for every one of them! That's how good I think this is. Many other diners from one tops to this family ordered this and if we go again that's what we will try for sure. My wife says when we sat down that this looked like an Italian American type cuisine and she was slightly correct. As we have seen the typical dining in Italy with Primi, Secondi, etc type of menus and authentic Italian food, this place was very much like a really good version of Italian/American restaurants with quality food and deserts similar to what's found in San Francisco or east coast cities with a large Italian population. Just Portuguese style and decidedly European. Do not miss Al Garage on your trip to Lisboa!!

The calamari was cooked to perfection as was the shrimp but a few were not cleaned properly but everything tasted good. The chile did have a tiny bite so somebody might think this is spicy but was not for me, finally something with flavor. I did not eat all the pasta because then I ordered the octopus. The octopus was not cleaned properly but the texture was spot on and the taste was great, I added some of my own hot sauce on the side to give it some kick. Odd to have a boiled egg with the octopus, good taste but the green ring indicates the egg was overcooked. Everything was temperature hot and served fairly quickly. WiFi available. I should have just ordered the pasta because that was fantastic! The octopus was okay but took some work to clean. The pasta gives this place a 5. Service and tip with VAT already included would drop to 2. The octopus is 3 stars. But the pasta was the best meal thus far in Portugal.

We wanted Portugese food at a "nice, semi-formal sit down place". Gambrinus looked to tick all the marks - we walked there and found the place quickly - very charming storefront. You walk in past the bar room which is very quaint and semi-supperclub formal. We got to the maî·tre and were seated in the very charming formal dining room. There is a reserved elegance of this place that makes it feel as if it's been there for 50 or 100 years - wonderful classic decor. The staff are all in formal attire - striking all the vibes of a late 1950's American SupperClub in Portugal. And to our glee - this is indeed what this place is! We were served our starter drinks while we reviewed the menu options; our "formal, main waiter" who is in the most formal attire walked us patiently through the options (we are new to Portugese food) and he made a number of excellent suggestions. Our starter course arrived, shrimp flambe, which was made table side and served - hinted at what was to come. We were amazed at the showmanship of the staff - very formal but friendly and in a way comical. As we awaited the mains, a table near us ordered something also flambe'd crêpes. But it was the SHOW that was special. They brought out the cooking stuff, and the waiter arrived and put on a literal magic show - acting like he had the fire in his hands - he would release the flames into the crêpes and then capture them back in his hand and the flames were gone. The table that ordered them were delighed, and we also enjoyed the show. Our main order did not disappont and hit all the marks. We had an after dinner desert and drinks, then a coffee. The price is not inexpensive; the food and entertainment makes this place five stars. If you are in Lisbon and want to have a "formal" feeling dinner that is classic and entertaining - go here for sure. It's delightful, fun, and worth every penny!
