My husband and I chose Mar do Inferno for our anniversary after hearing it was one of the premier dining experiences in Cascais. Unfortunately, it ended up being the most disappointing--and most expensive--meal we've had during our month in Portugal. The experience got off to a poor start. The hostess wasn't welcoming, and when I politely asked if we could sit closer to the window, I was told those tables had been reserved weeks in advance. We had also made a reservation for our anniversary, so that was disappointing. We were seated behind a pillar instead. Throughout the evening, not a single member of the waitstaff smiled. They all looked unhappy to be there, which created a surprisingly cold atmosphere. None of the staff ever came by to ask how our meal was, and no one acknowledged our anniversary. The restaurant itself wasn't nearly as elegant or luxurious as its reputation suggests. Aside from the lobster tank, the décor and atmosphere felt rather ordinary. To make matters worse, our view overlooked a wire fence and a parking area instead of the beautiful ocean setting we had expected. There were also several odd service issues. I ordered a gin martini. They said they were out of green olives, so I requested a lemon twist instead. The drink arrived with black olives and a lemon twist, which was confusing. As for the food, the complimentary bread with the crab pâté was excellent and easily the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, everything after that was underwhelming. The sea bass was bland and forgettable, and the vegetables were overcooked to the point of being mushy. What made the evening especially disappointing is that every other restaurant we've visited in Cascais has been wonderful. Friendly, smiling staff checked on us, made us feel welcome, and served memorable meals--often at much lower prices. Given Mar do Inferno's reputation and premium prices, we expected an exceptional dining experience. Instead, we left wondering how it has earned such glowing reviews. I genuinely hope management takes a close look at the service, atmosphere, and food quality, because right now the restaurant simply doesn't live up to its reputation. read more

Hubby's Birthday Dinner - we celebrated my husbands birthday in Portugal this year ! I was so happy to see that Yelp had a presence in Portugal so while planning the trip I started book marking all the cool exciting places I wanted to check out ! Sooo I was so happy to find Restaurante Mar Do Inferno! It had gorgeous views of the Atlantic Ocean and the best seafood ! We made our reservation online before leaving California. It was easy and had an English and Portuguese option. We arrived and once we got there we were greeted warmly and seated quickly . There were all these fresh seafood options that you could pick from in live tanks ! Service was top tier !! Our waiter was funny and very entertaining! He warmed up even more as the evening progressed! We had the best view of the sea and ambiance was lovely ! We ordered the seafood platter - langoustines, lobster, prawns, sea bream, potatoes in a garlic butter sauce !! Everything was SO FRESH!! So delicious !!! We booked Mar do Inferno for our anniversary after hearing it was supposed to be a fantastic five-star, high-end experience. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment from the moment we walked in. The service throughout the meal felt cold and joyless. None of the staff seemed happy to be there, and no one checked in to ask how our meal was. It felt oddly tense, like everyone working there was having a terrible day. The food did not make up for it. We ordered the sea bass, and it was very unremarkable -- bland and lacking flavor. The vegetables were overcooked and mushy. Honestly, the best part of the meal was the crab pâté with bread served before the main course. No one acknowledged our anniversary, despite the reservation being for that occasion. We have been dining along the coast for over a month, and this was not only the most expensive meal we've had, but also one of the most disappointing. Other restaurants we visited had warmer service, better food, better views, and a much more welcoming atmosphere -- often for less money. For a restaurant that presents itself as high-end, Mar do Inferno needs to seriously step up its service, hospitality, atmosphere, and food. I don't think I have ever gotten worse service anywhere. The large man that served us could not have been more indifferent towards us. We watched 2 other tables get seated and nearly finish their meals before we got our food. Our group of five had lunch at this restaurant on 25 January. Four members of the group ordered raw oysters, and ALL four became ill afterwards with high fever, vomiting and severe abdominal cramps. The fifth person, who did not eat oysters, remained completely fine. We informed the restaurant promptly and submitted a complaint through the official Portuguese Livro de Reclamações. While the restaurant initially engaged, they denied any connection, requested medical documentation, and ultimately just stopped responding altogether... The whole experience resulted in our entire household being affected all at the same time, causing significant distress and two full days of missed work and school. Our elderly family friend got quite sick, used to be a regular customer there, he didn't even get an apology. We made repeated attempts to resolve the situation amicably and provided supporting documentation of the impact, but no resolution was ever offered (our total bill was approximately €380). The location of the restaurant is great if you are looking for oceanfront dining experience. But don't expect too much of the rest, and be aware of potential attack of the flies. We ordered the Salada, Caril Lavagante, the Pregado Dase, and the Sangrias(red and white). Only the Sangrias was good IMHO. The flies were extremely annoying because they kept attacking our foods. This place seems to be more view/ambiance than anything else~we ordered the seafood rice (basically a paella, so to speak) and red sangria. We both enjoyed our food and sangria, but weren't floored by it either. I'd definitely come back again if we were staying in Cascais, but it was a bit of a hike from Lisbon and didn't really feel worth it bc there are many, many outstanding seafood spots throughout Portugal. The view is the biggest draw here imo and that's okay bc there a lot of ppl who care more about ambiance/decor/views than their actual food...perfect spot for that crowd bc it's something you won't forget! read more

Worst customer service ever. Let me start by when me and a friend walked in the first thing their server said was do you want to see the menu first before taking a seat, basically saying that we look broke for this restaurant. We said no that we will take a seat and look at the menu. We go ahead and take a seat and 20 min pass and non of the server's attends us. Another couple sits down next to us and the server brings them bread to the table and bring there drinks mind you we've been sitting in our table 20 min trying to get attention from them and none of the server will come to the table. 3.25 stars. This restaurant is located near Boca do Inferno (Hell's Mouth) in Cascais. Make sure you get some good views of some incredible landscape before or after eating here. Overall, this is a good restaurant with some very fresh seafood items that you can view yourself before purchase. We actually did not do that which was probably a mistake as there were some very tasty looking items ordered at other tables. What I will say is that the wine selection was good, the clams we ate were absolutely perfect (better than a similar dish at Ramiro in Lisbon) and I thought the sea bream was nice if not a little bland. Lovely elegant dining room overlooking sea was marred by a large party of about 25 flies that had apparently made a reservation for the night. They stayed for about an hour into our dinner until they turned all lights fully on. It was very odd that the restaurant staff and other patrons seemed wholly unconcerned about this. I suspect it was not the first night of the flies reservation .Service was barely there . Overall food tasty and reasonable for quantity and quality. We started with fresh crab meat which was a generous portion but unflavored and unceremoniously just dumped in a crab shell .Main course was a massive grilled platter of adequately fresh one whole fish with an entire lobster multiply tiger shrimp mussels and smaller shrimp under 100 euro to share for 2 . Could certainly serve 3. Ended the meal with a horrific lemon pie which was about 90 percent poorly cooked meringue and a 100 percent inedible . Since Cascais is swimming with many other seafood restaurants with no flies , better food and much better service I would not return and am baffled at its high ratings. This is a seafood lovers heaven. Looks ordinary from the outside but it's really nice once you step in. White table cloths, nice cutlery and china and very friendly staff. I loved this place and would come back here in a heartbeat. There was about twenty of us at dinner and we had a fixed menu comprising of different types of seafood, starters and dessert. There was nothing that I did not like. Grilled sea bass for main and shrimps, tiny lobsters and clams for starters :-) yummm The sea bass was grilled to perfection and the cold seafood starters were fabulous. A few of us ended up emptying all the plates on the table with leftovers lol Staff were very attentive and we had two waiters for our table that came around regularly to top up glasses and check up on us. Delicious seafood restaurant located a few minutes away from Boca do Inferno. The food, service, and ambience were all excellent! It was extremely easy to make a dinner reservation via email just a day prior, and they were super accommodating when we had to change the date AND when we arrived a full hour prior to our set time. Despite our last minute change of plans, they still managed to seat us on the patio (enclosed for the rainy weather) next to the windows so we could have a view of the ocean - which we weren't expecting at all. Definitely order one of the seafood platters for two. My fiancé and I didn't feel like fussing with crab, so we got the Special Platter (75 euros) which came with sea bass, tiger prawns, and lobster with potatoes and vegetables (according to the menu). The actual plate also had several pieces of shrimp. All of the seafood was cooked perfectly! The lobster was so tender and juicy, and had tons of bright orange tomalley (or roe?) to dip the meat in for a layered umami experience. The tiger prawn was also huge and succulent. And the shrimp! What a lovely surprise. It was cooked very well and also came with the head (easily removed), which had tons of flavor to be coaxed out. That was probably the most flavorful bite. The sea bass was also extremely meaty and moist. The olive oil with garlic at the bottom of the giant platter served as the perfect accompaniment to all of the seafood, as well as the potatoes and vegetables. It was easily more than enough for two people - you could probably have shared it among an additional 1-2 people if you got some more sides to share. OMG. This place was a-ma-zing. I had been a bit skeptical, because it was right by Boca do Inferno, and I thought it would just be a thing because of tourists. But some colleagues took me there for lunch while I was there for a work trip, and it was so, so good. We had some local white wine as a refreshment, and a couple appetizers. But the best part was the Polvo à Lagareiro, tender octopus tentacles in olive oil, potatoes and some other bits, that was absolutely delicious. This dish was so flavorful, tasty, and tender. We were lucky to get in because we didn't have reservations but decided to drop by since it was a bit late for lunch. The place was full but they had one table available if we didn't mind sitting in the smoking room. We aren't smokers but we really wanted to eat here so we subjected our lungs to smoke and the food was worth it. We ordered the seafood platter plus garlic clams and octopus. Our server said we ordered too much food and suggested we drop the octopus. When the food came, it was a lot but I eat a lot and was craving octopus so we ended adding it back. I enjoyed the train ride out to Cascais from Lisbon and how there's a beach just foot steps from the station, Praia da Rainha. The walk from the station to Mar do Inferno had some other beautiful spots to stop and enjoy, including some a little hidden and off the beaten path. As for the restaurant, their whole crab was pretty good. The clams were solid, but I've had better elsewhere and have made better clams myself. I did not like their sangria, which was loaded with granules of sugar. The service I received wasn't the friendliest either. I did sit at the best seat in the house right by an opening out to the ocean. There was something perfect about eating seafood to the sound of the ocean. I'm glad I gave it a try, but I wouldn't come back to this restaurant again. read more

A waiter finally came and seemed annoyed that I didn't have a reservation but sat me anyway. Service was slow and inattentive, unlike what I had experienced in Portugal so far. On entry, you see all the seafood on display. Staff were alright, we expected staff to be friendly and welcoming seeing as it's a tourist hotspot. Even though I am not so much into fish eating I must say I really enjoyed eating in this restaurant. The restaurant is sitting on the tip of a cliff right by the rough sea.
