We popped in here on an Airbnb experience and loved the local nature of the place. We were surrounded by lots of locals so you knew you were getting authentic eats. We had the traditional stew made in the thermal tavernas. The meat was excellent. Loved how juicy and fall apart in your mouth textures. So flavorful. Really enjoyed it and it was lively too without being too loud. Would reco!
Came on a Sunday at 2pm and the place was extremely busy. We were lucky to get a seat as just a party of two. The cozido stewed in the furnas is what makes this place famous. All the food was good. The beef specifically was the best part of the plate. Dare I say the food was almost too flavorful? You definitely need some basic bites to clear your palate every once in awhile. I would recommend this place as it's incredibly authentic and the food is culturally relevant.
We came for lunch and got more food than we could ever eat, so come hungry ! Even the traditional cozido for one would serve two people. The house wine was delicious. We were greeted by a friendly staff person and even though we didn't have reservations, he found a table for us. The restaurant was very busy and noisy. But that was part of the charm.
Great place for dinner in Furnas! This place is known for their Cozido, so we tried that along with Chicken Paste and Anchovy Toast, Limpets, O Bife a Tony's, Salad, Chocolate Pie (rich rich chocolate), and Pineapple Pie (delicious balance of tart and sweet). Solid meal.
We, of course, like many others, came here to try the cozido, which is a traditional stew made with different cuts of meat, potatoes, cabbage, and carrot that is slow cooked using the hot volcanic steam found in the area. We ordered one to share for two people and it was a good serving size for two. The food itself was a bit on the bland side. They do give you a small pot with the meat/vegetable juice that you can pour onto the dish if you'd like. We also tried their lapas. Compared to other lapas that we later on, this one was more rubbery and I did not like it as much. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this place - 3/5 for the actual taste of the food, but 5/5 for the experience of trying the cozido. Note that if you do come here, I would recommend making a reservation in advance because it does get booked out rather quickly.

I don't know if I would get it again but husband said he would lol. We got the cozido for 2 but they also sell individual portions. For dessert I had the house-made passion fruit flan. SO GOOD. The passionfruit flavor was strong and flan eggy.

Restaurante Tony's is the largest restaurant in the village and is located across from the Church of Nossa Senhora da Alegria. There is a second floor with an upper deck. If you want cozido, you will need to order a day in advance for lunch. Lapas Grelhadas: A hot pan is brought to the table. On it are grilled limpets that are smothered in butter, garlic, and lemon juice. The limpets are round mollusks that have a texture similar to clams and a taste almost like mussels. The slightly conical shells are great vessels for slurping the garlic butter sauce. Lulas Grelhadas: This dish consists of grilled squid with garlic butter sauce and sauteed vegetables and boiled potatoes. Everything is delicious with garlic butter. Passionfruit Pudding x Passionfruit Cheesecake = Ultimate passionfruit dessert perfection. You should really order both the passionfruit pudding and the passionfruit cheesecake and eat them together. The passionfruit pudding is a flan with rich passionfruit flavor in the custard and bits of passionfruit on the bottom. The cheesecake has a subtle passionfruit flavor and creamy texture.

The cozido comes as a heaping plate of meat and veggies, especially if you order the one for two people (we should have ordered one for both of us, this was too much!). We had no reservation, but came in right as they opened for lunch, and scored a nice seat on the balcony overlooking the city.

I also got the shrimp risotto and it was incredible! It also could have fed 2-3 people! The white wine sangria was delicious! Kids meals are HUGE and could also be shared. The restaurant closes at 3:30, but the staff never rushed us out. Overall, a great experience!
Amazing! If you ever head out to Saõ Miguel, make sure to stop by Tony's Restaurant in Frunas. The restaurant was highly recommended by locals. It's a popular place and crowded, but it's totally worth it. The specialty is Cozido, a rich slowed cooked stew. It contains hearty portions of potatoes, kale, carrots, chicken, pork, chorizo, taro root, and more. The ingredients varied by region. Anyways portion size is enough for 2 people, maybe even 3. It's cooked for 6 hours underground with volcanic heat. Go to Furnas Lake to see the cooks digging up the cozido. It is a big attraction, quite a unique experience. As it is being dug up, you can smell the sulphur. Anyways the stew is delicious. 5 stars.
I wasn't too impressed with their dinner menu. My chicken breast was way over cooked- not moist. Very hard to cut with a butter knife. This dish was served with rice and French fries... Lovely service but I didn't care for the food at all. Vegetable soup was delicious.
Food: I got the fried octopus and it was delicious. I savored every bite super softly and delicious. I also loved the potatoes and sausage it came with very fresh and tasty. This octopus was one of the best I've had in Portugal very soft, and fresh. My dish was deliciously garnished and had savory broccoli which I loved as well. The dish overall was very impressive and I loved every bit of it. We also got the iconic dish here which takes 8 hours to cook it was the condo das furnas and I absolutely loved it. The meat was so soft and melty and the potatoes and cabbage were delicious highly recommend and if you want to feel a little bit of the culture here, absolutely golden. As for my family members one had an issue with the steak they asked for it to be cooked medium but it came back basically raw. Than we asked for them to cook it back again medium but they brought it back still looked raw maybe rare the second time back. Maybe it's different in America I don't know but probably not just be aware for the steak. Everything else was pretty good no complaints. I also had the strawberry gelato for dessert and it was very tasty I recommend. Overall a great place Service: Amazing kind, quick service they even recommended we only have 1 condo das furnas instead of our original pre order of 2. We silly Americans are big but aren't that big and 1 was plenty before our meals for 6 of us. Stopped into this restaurant to try the recommended traditional meal cozido das Furnas. Essentially a meat and vegetable platter that is best enjoyed by 2+ individuals. A unique meal, glad we tried it, very delicious. We ate in the outdoor seating area. Enjoyed a bottle of house wine with the meal. Service was great and fast. Fun and lively atmosphere. read more

When looking for cozido das fornas this is the place! Coming from America I was looking for authentic Portuguese food. This was tasty, the meat was tender the vegetables were soft. The portion size was spot on with leftovers. We ordered a stew size for two with 2 of us. The ambiance is family like, dress is casual. It is loud if you don't like that it may not be for you. The wait staff were terrific. We only speak English so our waiter spoke and explained everything so slowly and clearly for us. He gave us excellent recommendations for dessert. Couldn't recommend Tony's more when you visit the Azores read more

Absolutely amazing vegetarian cozido dinner! and I didn't need to call ahead to reserve the cozido. Not sure if I got lucky, or maybe because it was the vegetarian option. They did say that they were out of the meat one though. We even tried to go back again -- but they were closed when we arrived. Still dreaming of that flavorful dinner. I was afraid that it was just going to be steamed or boiled veggies-- but it had a chick pea base that was so tasty! We watch food being taken out of the caldieras-- and then went to dinner. It was so fun! My husband had the veggie burger and said that was good as well. read more

We were taken here on a furnas tour and I'd highly highly recommend. My mouth is watering right now thinking of the volcanic steam cooked dish . Warning though with three people we could not finish a single platter! read more

It's a super laid back vibe, even during thr dinner rush when its at it's at its busiest. You have some bicyclists (locals after a long ride) and some young lovers checking out the sweets. Don't let the paper placemats fool you, under the paper is a real table cloth. I feel like that sets the tone for the resturant, it's all a facade, under that unassuming simple looking front is some of the most delicious food in town. The locals come for dinner. The chefs go at 6am in the morning and put food in the earth furnas to cook. They pull it out at midday around 12 noon. If you order the cozido for dinner realize it's been kept warm for 6 -8 hours, it seems like it's the same for lunch or dinner. It's great, I highly suggest everyone get it. If you happen to be a vegetable eater, ask if you can get the veggies and not the meat, the flavor is great, it's been cooked in the earth. It's open for lunch and dinner, ota fully legit. You can get the dishes that only get cooked in Furnas at other resturants in town, they'll be smaller, taste pretty much the same and cost at least twice as much if not more. read more

We dined at Tony's for lunch after visiting the Caldeiras das Furnas and seeing all the spots where local restaurants use the heat from the hot springs to cook some famous stew. Based on the advertising at the furnas (and other places), Tony's seemed very touristy. It was very crowded, even for a later lunch around 3pm. There are lots of tables, and while we were sat quickly it took a very long time for some one to come take our order. When they finally did, we were informed they ran out of the stew 30 minutes prior to our arrival. We ordered white wine to pair with the fish we were ordering, but instead were brought cold red wine. Since it was so busy we decided just to drink the red wine and not say anything. To start, we had the furnas cheese, which was pretty good (although I'd pass on the bread and just enjoy the cheese). For our main course, I had the cod and my husband had the forkbeard fish. The cod was overcooked, but we both enjoyed the forkbeard. The portions were large enough we probably could have shared one entree. I don't recall if there were a number of other options for dining in the area, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way or wait a very long time to dine here. Perhaps if the stew is available that might make a difference. read more

Delicious cooked vegetables. A vegan could easily eat a whole plate of veggies and have some pineapple for dessert. 2 main dishes, 2 sides, 2 beers and pineapple came out to be under 40euro. The place is very busy so reserve in advance or reserve and then go to the thermal pool. read more

Our tour guide made reservations here for us when we were down in Furnas for the day. Don't come here expecting to get a seat without reservations as it seems all the tours come here. Our server suggested we try the house red wine which was 6euros a bottle and quite good. Furnas' culinary claim to fame is the slow cooking method of burying a pot of meat underground near a steam geyser and letting it simmer there for 6-8 hours. Of course we had to do the Cozido for 4 people, which was a huge amount of food, and we weren't able to finish it. Cozido included rice on the side, and was an assortment of meats, with a few veggies such as cabbage and carrots, definitely your crock pot sort of meal. Personally I would have enjoyed a dipping sauce or something on the side for my meat, but regardless, this is a must order! read more
Fantastic! I swear every meal gets better and better with each passing day in Sao Miguel! Cozido das Furnas, anyone? Everything about it is amazing. Imagine throwing beef, pork, chicken, blood sausage and chorizo with yams, sweet potatoes, lettuce and carrots in a pot and burying it underground where it is heated by an active volcano. You let it stew for 6 hours then feast away. Sounds rad, right? Well it is! We were so fortunate to be taken here but also to be shown how it is made locally. The meats are incredibly tender and vegetables were fresh and flavored beautifully. Seasoned with just salt, you can taste each ingredient at its finest. Tony's was the first restaurant that started selling this local fish to the public. Opening up the Azorian kitchen and flavors that all that wanted to partake. The service was spectacular and English is spoken fluently which made for great conversation and sharing of memories. When I think of Azorian hospitality, I imagine this place. It's truly one of a kind and if you can have one meal on the island, I would recommend this place whole heartedly. They only take reservations to ensure that they make enough cozido, so make sure to contact them ahead of time. You won't regret it! read more

Come here to eat the local traditional food cooked underground. Since I didn't get to bury the food myself, I was still curious to taste it at the end of the cooking process. Tony's delivers the authentic stuff, and it's worth the visit. The portions are enormous. read more

Visited in September 2016, we ordered seafood here in addition to the famous stew. Here's the rundown from tastiest to meh: 1. Grilled squid -- Only 9 euro! And they give you a TON of squid. It's surprising how much food is on the plate. 5 stars. Squids were nicely charred, not rubbery and really fresh. Delicious! 2. Cozido das Furnas (stew) -- My husband enjoyed this dish but I liked it a little less. I felt that although the veggies were tasty (especially the melt-in-your-mouth-potatoes), the beef was a bit stringy. A solid choice tho! 3. Grilled Sardines -- not as good as the squid, but still tasty. 4. Grills swordfish -- the fish was fresh-tasting, but it was overcooked. The taste was not special. It was not worth ordering. 5. Wine -- their wine list is pretty cheap for being in a touristy town. However, the 1/2 bottle we ordered was terrible. It tasted flat and sour. I'll upload a picture of it, not worth getting. read more
