Terrible experience -- will not return I was very disappointed with Bar Caloura. The atmosphere is plain and uncomfortable -- tables are crammed tightly together with hard metal chairs that make it difficult to relax. Service was rushed and minimal. The server didn't explain any dishes and simply pointed to a billboard and a basic printed placemat. When I asked for bread, she literally threw a paper bag with stale, sliced bread onto the table. The salad bar looked dirty and neglected -- the corn was old and grayish, and the lettuce was wilted. Cocktails were a complete waste of money: warm, bland, no ice, and poorly made. My main course arrived with just three small boiled potatoes and completely bland fish that had no seasoning at all. The presentation was poor, especially for the price (around €25-30). Plates were wet and dirty. The biggest issue was the cleanliness -- the place was fly-infested. Flies were everywhere, including in drinks and buzzing around our heads the entire time. I don't understand the high ratings this place receives. Based on my experience, I would not recommend it and will not be returning. read more

Beautiful location, food was delicious and fresh. Our waiter was very nice and helpful with his suggestions. The reason I deducted a point was because service was very slow, we sat for 15 minutes before we were greeted by our waiter and it took awhile for our food to come out. The mussels were very fresh, served in a flavorful broth. We also had the fish of the day which was Veja, a simple dish but so flavorful! This is a difficult review to write because I went to the restaurant twice. The first time our experience was great. Server was nice and attentive, the view is beautiful, food was good and came as ordered, dessert was tasty too. The second time we came our waiter left during our meal and no one came to take over. This resulted in our food being massively delayed. One of the fish we ordered was incorrect but it had been so long since we ordered and I was hungry so I ate it. The food wasn't as well seasoned and the fish also ended up being undercooked. We wanted to end on a good note but they were out of literally every dessert from that day at like 4pm. This place was highly recommended - and we quickly found out why. Bar Caloura has only ONE dish - the fish of the day. This day it was swordfish. In the Azores, restaurants brine the fish, which make it tender and brings out the flavor. We also ordered the gambas appetizer, which we thought was likely the best gambas we've ever had. From the moment we entered, we felt welcome, and the menu and offerings were explained. The salad bar, which is included with the meal, was a bit underwhelming. As pretty much everywhere in Sao Miguel, we were treated to lightning fast service, friendly staff, and an immaculate dining area. However, the waiter made THREE overcharges on the bill. He removed them, but whether it's intentional or accidental, be sure to carefully check the bill. read more

Amazing seafood! We had the grilled triggerfish. Soooo good. A little butter, a little seasoning, but mostly the fresh fish flavor stood out. I had the house white wine and my husband had a dark beer, best we've had in the Azores. For dessert, we had the orange torte (like key lime pie) and the pineapple cake. It was beautiful. The staff were quite helpful and attentive. The restaurant is known for its seafood and it did not disappoint. All the food was incredible and reasonably priced. SO many people recommended this place to us, and it still managed to exceed expectations! I love the setup here, you can go for a swim in the ocean right next to the restaurant, then stroll right in for a great meal. They don't take reservations, so come early to avoid a wait. Our 1st restaurant visited after unloading our bags. About a 49 min drive from the villa. This was a recommendation from several different sources. Great location by the water and spectacular views. Unfortunately it was raining pretty heavy and the wind made it a cold day to be eating outdoors under canopy cover. The octopus salad ended up to be the best version we had all week, it was a wise choice that I had ordered a 2nd serving. An amazing place to have lunch! We sat next to a woman from Boston who let us know to try the fresh fish platter. I tried limpets for the first time and absolutely loved them. Such a great first meal ! Beautiful seats by the water and delicious seafood. We tried the limpets which were not our favorite, but the octopus salad and prawns in butter sauce were very good. If you're in São Miguel for a couple of nights, there's two dinners that have to be on your shortlist: Bar Caloura and Associação Agrícola de São Miguel. Bar Caloura's outdoor seating was the best outdoor seating experience we had in the Azores. Highly recommend mussels, shrimp and doing a seafood latter where you can choose a few difference fresh fish. Ideal for community food/family style dinner. If you have kids, the rocks at the end of the pier are great entertainment. Service is the only reason for four stars. read more

Caloura Bar has amazingly fresh seafood at completely reasonable prices, beautiful scenery, pleasant staff, plenty of wines and affordable beer. Based on the reviews here I tried the trigger fish, and am very glad I am. My wife got the Tuna, which was also very good, but not quite as fantastic as the trigger fish. The preparation is very basic but highlights the flavor of the fish. It seemed to be a rock salt and butter coating before the grill, then grilled until crispy, so that the fish melted in your mouth. Truly delicious. The beers were 1 euro each, which seemed plenty fair. The staff was quite busy but pleasant and reasonably efficient. The location is absolutely gorgeous, right next to a swimming cove with a serene view of the Ocean. This is our favorite restaurant so far on the island. read more

Hustling and bustling place! It's a go to place since it's right next to the natural pool. We got lucky with parking and swooped right in. They do have a small parking lot, but mainly street parking. We also got lucky and didn't have to wait for a seat. We stopped here for a late lunch and tuna was their catch of the day. I came here specifically for their limpets and shrimp dish and that I got. My boyfriend ordered their caesar salad with fresh tuna, while the others got a cheese and pepper dish. They give out bags of bread and it paired with the cheese dish and shrimp perfectly. I was in heaven. Limpets were delicious, almost a cross between a clam and abalone. I like the chewiness and the garlic flavor. I can eat a few dozens of these things. The shrimp dish was very good also, but it only came with 4. Wish it was a bigger dish. I dipped the bread in the buttery sauce and had to ask for another bag of bread....oopsy lol. My boyfriend enjoyed his tuna salad very much. I wasn't sure what to make of it when he ordered it, but it was a tuna steak made perfectly. It was super fresh and satisfied his appetite. Overall, it was a great experience and would come back here again. Also, their slice of pineapple was out of this world! It was so sweet! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed this place! The view is breathtaking, although I definitely recommend a sweater as you are sitting right next to the ocean. This is the place to come if love fresh fish. Right after we sat down my boyfriend and I were taken over to an area where all the fish caught that day was laid out in front of you. You got to select which kind and which exact piece you wanted to eat that night. I got the tuna and it was to die for! The fish was cooked perfectly and laid out in a platter with fresh veggies. As an appetizer we split the mussels - they were bigger than any we had ever had back in the states. They were delicious. While the food was amazing the real star was the pineapple cake! I almost don't want to review this place because of how good it was. No, I do not live in the Azores and have no idea when I'll be back, but I don't want people finding out about it. How selfish is that?? One of the best food experiences we had during our visit for these reasons: 1. They pour their glasses of wine with a heavy hand (this has already sold me). 2. The place is very cozy with an incredible view of the water. 3. Their octopus salad 4. Their octopus salad! 5. Every fresh fish you could ever dream of - we got the barracuda and it was amazing but I wanted to try everything else (also would have been happy ordering 3 more octopus salads as my entree). Because of how amazing the place is, expect a wait unless you arrive early. Excellent food and even better service. Our server was so patient answering our questions regarding the fish of the day and other items on the menu. We started off with the octopus salad and the local island cheese. The octopus salad was so good, nice amount of oil and vinegar as well as citrus. The cheese was strong, similar in taste to a Parmesan cheese. Their bread was outstanding, I couldn't get enough of it. The fish is so fresh and grilled to perfection. We ordered four fish to share among five people and it was more than enough food. The fish are served with a few slices of tomato, red peppers and boiled potatoes. There's also a small all-you-can-eat salad bar. For dessert we tried both the pineapple cake and the pudim de coco, both good but my favorite was the pineapple cake by far. The view is of the water, right where the waves break, which means it gets very windy and kinda chilly so bring a jacket. They accept credit cards. I'm not sure why I can't go five stars on this one. We stopped by for lunch. The fresh medium rare tuna served on a salad was certainly very good (maybe just a touch closer to medium but not worth a complaint) and the tomato based, lightly spiced, fish soup was very good as well. The wine by the glass pour was generous, service very good and pricing in line with similar local experiences. Maybe it was sitting on a porch so close to the water and not seeing it or the vibe didn't hit just right. I would certainly try it again for dinner and perhaps add another star when I do. read more

We came here without a reservation and they were able to accommodate us outside with a view of the water. It was a really nice experience. It was a little breezy though so we had to hold onto our stuff. We ordered the garlic shrimp and the limpets as an app. Then our waitress took us to the fish area where we could pick out what we wanted so at least you know the fish is fresh! The fish was HUGE and came with some veggies. I think they're all prepared the same way with butter and spices. My friend couldn't have acid but they were able to accommodate her. The food was good and fresh but honestly I wasn't overly impressed for the prices. Service was amazing though and it was nice to eat by the water so I would probably come back for drinks and apps. read more

If youre on the island of Sao Miguel, Bar Caloura is a MUST visit. This was by far my favorite place in Azores. I'll add, also my favorite restaurant in all of Portugal (4 days in and around Lisbon). What i liked most was basically being told what to order. Our waitress suggested local dishes and fish caught that day. We went with all her recommendations. A white cheese made in Azores, feta but creamier. Their octupus salad which was similar to cevechi. A white fish and swordfish. All insanely good. No fancy sauce or presentation just simple preparation w fresh ingrediants. The highlight of the meal was easily their octopus salad. Large chucks of octupus diced with tomatoes onions and citrus. Mouth watering good. Wish we ordered a second plate, because the rest of the trip i tried every one else's octupus hoping to relive Bar Caloura and nothing was even close. read more
