I cannot believe I have never reviewed this place. We drive past this iconic eatery to/from the…read morecottage and we stop almost every single time... both ways lol. We usually end up there sometime between 11am and 1pm on a weekend day and naturally there is always a line (and the parking lot gets busy). Fortunately they started using a buzzer system to alert you when your order is ready, but be prepared to wait, longer than you would think for a fast food-type place along the side of the highway (usually 10-15 minutes). I suppose if you think of it more as a very casual restaurant (with no waiter service...), then the wait time is more acceptable. Though I usually get some all dressed steamies (classic steamed hot dog and bun, dressed with relish, mustard, onions/cabbage coleslaw) and a classic poutine (both excellent - the poutine is made using thick cut fries, doused in gravy, but with a good ratio of curds to fries), they have a number of other menu items, including a bevy of homemade desserts. The last time I was there, I decided to try their lasagna, which was part of a daily special that came with a drink, soup, and dessert. I chose the vegetable soup - full of veggies, hearty and tasty. The lasagna was actually amazing - loaded with so much melted browned cheese, served pipping hot with garlic bread on the side. Homemade meat sauce inside and I am pretty sure there was pepperoni scattered on the top, right under the cheese... and you can see in my photo that there was some green peppers on it - the effect was kind of like eating an all dressed pizza lasagna. I loved it. I chose a square of homemade carrot cake for the dessert, and fortunately they let me take it to go, but then I promptly left it on the table, oops. I like that there is a lot of seating outside, as well as a small playground - a great rest stop for kids. Cleanliness of bathrooms inside is hit and miss - women's one is usually fine, but not the men's. Cash or debit only, no credit. Overall, I would definitely recommend stopping by if you're looking for some classic Québecois fast food!

My experience dining at this restaurant for dinner on Thursday night was horrible. I had stopped…read morein earlier in the day to look at their menu and was warmly greeted by James, who raved about the menu and insisted I try the soup of the day right then (creme of lettuce). I happily made a reservation for one and he recommended I bring my own wine. I asked him if he would be working the evening shift and he said no that Sylvia would be taking care of me. Arriving at 7:30pm, I was seated by one of two waitresses. I ordered and my bottle of wine was opened and put in a wine holder. (It was never touched by the waitress again.) The restaurant was busy and the two servers run around from inside to outside trying to take care of their customers. However, this is done with no pleasantness, no smile, and if you don't speak French, impatience. My basket of bread arrived, two burnt rolls. For my main course, I ordered filet of sole with strawberries and mango. I took one bite and it was raw inside! Getting the server's attention was challenging but she finally came over and returned my plate to the kitchen. 10 minutes later my fish arrived looking cooked (light brown in color) and it was fully cooked. I asked for some almonds and lemon to complement the dish as the strawberries and mango "salsa" needed more taste. I ate half the fish and asked the rest to be boxed up. I requested the bill and was flabbergasted to see a $2.00 charge for the almonds. (It was a tablespoon of almonds put in a tiny cup.) I told the server that I couldn't believe I was being charged for them, especially when my dinner arrived raw! I asked for the manager and told he was not there. I also asked to speak with James and that was not possible either. They refused to take the almonds off my bill. I very rarely do not leave a tip but there was no way I could when I had an experience like I had. The waitress was harried, wine not served, bread was burnt, fish was undercooked, the lack of professionalism was overwhelming. I paid my bill leaving the the half-eaten fish on my table. I was sorry I ever entered the restaurant under those circumstances. The next day there was a message on my answering machine in French. It was from Maxime, apparently the cook and owner. I anticipated it was a message of apology. Boy was I wrong. After getting it translated into English, Maxime was calling to tell me that he had to pay the $2.00 for the almonds out of his pocket and that I caused "a disruption" in the restaurant. He then said I was never to enter the restaurant again. I am a model customer and have a basic minimum of what is to be expected when one dines out. I am positive that if I were a French speaking customer, his demeanor would have been much different. Earlier, James mentioned to me that the restaurant was moving early 2018 to the old Pizza Hut location on the main street. After 50 years dining in the Laurentains, seeing many restaurants come and go, I have never experienced such service. Olives & Aromates needs all the luck they can get. Personally I would have preferred a much needed Pizza Restaurant replacement!

They had a guitarist perform live during our dinner on a Friday night. The owner of the restaurant is very friendly and down to earth. We had escargot and French onion soup as starters and both were phenomenal. It's nice to finally eat escargot that is not drenched in just butter. For our main entrees, we had the fish & chips and cedar plank maple glazed salmon with a homemade chimichurri. First of all, I'm huge on fish & chips, and I can say this place has one of the best I've had. The batter is perfect and the tartar sauce is homemade! You can taste the freshness. The salmon was cooked perfectly. Not overdone at all. The chimichurri sauce was really good too. We finished off with the crème brûlée, and that was probably my least favorite. It's not bad, but just mediocre. I highly recommend making reservations, especially on a weekend. It gets very busy!
