The doctors are great--I have absolutely no complaints about them…read more My issue is with the billing department and front office staff. I was effectively dismissed from the practice because of a $45 copay that went unpaid for more than 90 days. When I called to schedule an appointment with my eye doctor, the front desk told me that my account had been sent to collections and that they could not--or would not--schedule me. I was told I was no longer allowed to be seen by the practice. For context, I had been a cash-pay patient for more than 10 years because I did not have health insurance. During that time, I paid thousands of dollars out of pocket for treatment of uveitis, an ongoing eye condition that is causing vision loss in my right eye. When I finally obtained insurance and used it for the first time, no one informed me that I had a $45 copay. The bill went unpaid for over 90 days, and apparently that was enough to have me sent to collections and dismissed as a patient. I contacted the billing department to resolve the issue. They could not tell me which collection agency had the debt, and they would not accept my $45 payment directly. Frustrated, I left $45 cash at the front desk and left. Two months later, while still experiencing a significant flare-up of my condition, I called again to schedule an appointment. I was told I still owed money, that my account had been sent to collections, and that I had been dismissed from the practice. There was no record of the $45 cash payment I had left. I can't help but wonder whether my doctor is aware that a long-time patient with a serious eye condition was turned away over a delinquent $45 copay, that was paid.

Nope, the staff just puts you in a room, shuts the door and that's it. Good luck with your wait time. I went out to check to see if they forgot about me after almost 45 mins or what the excessive delay was and I was told that I need to be respectful. I did not raise my voice or swear. I just inquired about the delay and that this is uncomfortable and frustrating. Don't make it my issue that you cannot treat your patients in a timely manner. I will say their Manager Daniel was a pleasant surprise. He listened, was empathetic and stated that someone should be communicating when there are excessive wait times. His future is bright!

Dr. Spalding was very thorough in his testing of my eyes, very problematic due to radial keratotomy surgery that I had done back in the late 80s and early 90s. LOTS of scar tissue on my corneas, which makes it very difficult to diagnose glaucoma. After observing my eyes over a number of months, Dr. Spalding placed me on a very expensive drug called XDEMVY. It cost $2600 for one tiny bottle. My insurance paid all but $900 of it. Dr. Spalding worked with Walgreen's Specialty Pharmacy in Portland to obtain approval for the balance to be paid out of a grant. I was, frankly, blown away. The eye drops have made a tremendous difference for me. I am so grateful. At a time in America where most doctors don't spend more than six minutes with a patient, I always feel like Dr. Spalding takes the time with me to thoroughly check on my eyes and to make sure I understand what is going on with them. I appreciate this deeply!

Insurance estimate came back that we would owe $1264 out of pocket and the rest would be covered by insurance. Total out of pocket ended up being $2734 because insurance estimator screwed up. No recourse, no apologies, and they blamed changes in our insurance plan for the mistake. Insurance changed in January, so they only had 10 months to figure it out. Won't go back.
