Well, because Liz and her team make sure that the dog finds a home that is the best fit for her/him. It's nothing personal, it is relationship ( 2 sided). Liz has a lot of experience and is a good judge on dog/owner relationship. The process of adopting our great Pyrenees was more involved than most rescue but made us feel more confident about the shelter's abilities and competence. If people get denied, they get "Butt hurt;" if they get approved, they are "happy". As simple as that. Trust in the process. read more

I was looking forward to potentially adopting and saving a dog from this rescue, but I was disappointed I filled out everything, according to the information they needed and eventually was set up with a video (FaceTime) interview to show my home. Unfortunately, I was not home at the time we had scheduled due to running errands. I was communicative with the volunteer about the matter, They obviously became disappointed and literally ignored my messages after. I responded again after nearly a month later and they gave me a response to look else where. I'm glad they did, I for sure will look somewhere else to adopt a furry buddy for my family home. I just feel bad that they pass on us and only imagine on how many Other families they pass on because of petty things. In addition, this place looks shady on "adoption fees" gladly I didn't get to point, I can only imagine how they exploit a family desiring to adopt one of their dogs. read more

I wanted to rescue a miniature dachshund from Retrievers and Friends. Unfortunately, I was very honest on my application about how I lost a miniature dachshund to a coyote in 2009 when I lived in a house, with a yard and a 7-foot brick wall. The person who responded to my application, Annie, wrote me and told that I would not be a safe place for a dog. I currently - and for the foreseen future - live in an apartment. We have had a total of 7 miniature, and tweenie, dachshunds since 1992 and have never been considered an unsafe home for any of them. This is very unfortunate because after getting our last 4 as puppies from breeders, we have chosen to rescue a dog now since there are clearly so many dogs needing to be rescued. I think Butch would have been very safe and very happy with us. I would not recommend adopting from this organization, at least with Annie as your point of contact. She emailed me a very unfriendly email, and when I responded she was downright rude. read more

After losing our puppy we wanted to get a kitten since our first dog loves them dearly. Our dog as grown up with cats her entire life and enjoys them more than most dogs. After filling the application her response was one sentence saying "with a pit in the home we do not feel safe adopting" without any prior knowledge on our dog and her previous experience with cars. We responded saying how we felt rejected and Liz response was "based on 30 years of knowledge we know they are aggressive and best not to risk adoption." This is absolutely textbook discrimination. 30 years of knowledge will tell you every animal is different and a chihuahua could attack a cat vs a pit simply because it's a pit. The fact we got denied rescuing an animal in need based on selfish ignorant stigma is disgusting. I'm looking forward to putting this company on blast and spreading the word. read more

I'm not writing this review to discourage anyone from using their services, there are so many dogs in shelters and rescues that need loving homes, before it's sadly too late, so if you are able to get approved and adopt through this rescue, please do. My review is more to let anyone know that if they have had a similar experience to mine they are not alone. My husband and I are huge animal lovers. The annoying types that call their animals their babies and treat them like children. We currently have a 2.5 year old French bulldog, Pepper, and two cats, Ember and Marie. Pepper is a typical frenchie, super needy, quirky personality, and we love her. Our cats don't love her as much as we do, and pretty much ignore her. She loves to play, so lately we have been thinking of getting her a companion, and adding a new "kid" to the family. I work from home and we have the space, so why not adopt and save a life. My husband found a few dogs on Petfinder and they are/were with Retriever and Friends, so we filled out an application. The process took about two weeks to get to the actual FaceTime interview. Which we understood, since they are rescue and comprised of mostly volunteers, we were very patient and understanding. I thought the interview went well. I introduced Pepper to the volunteer conducting the interview, showed her our home/large fenced in backyard and answered all of her questions. One of their concerns was that the dogs we applied for had not been around cats. I did let them know that our cats ignore Pepper, but if they thought it was a problem, we would be open to other dogs that could possibly be a better match. She told me she would forward her review to the owners of the rescue, I would hear back within a few days, and that if all goes well the next step would be to set up a time to bring Pepper to the rescue to meet the dogs. To our surprise, we received an email from one of the owners, Liz, stating that they do not have any dogs that would be a good fit for our home... I responded and asked if she could please elaborate, but never received a response back. Obviously, we were sad to basically get rejected. Since I am the one who did the FaceTime interview, it was hard not to take it personal, since I could not figure out a reason why, and was never given one. We had let several friends and family members know that we were were trying to adopt and when we told them that we were denied, all were baffled and stated "if they don't approve you, who do they approve?" So anyways, please adopt and save a life/make room for a shelter animal to be pulled by a rescue. Our shelters are so overcrowded and healthy, loving animals are being put down everyday. If for some reason you are denied by this rescue, and know that you could/would give one or their animals the best life and a loving home, know that you are not alone! read more

We could not be happier with our adoption process from Retrievers and Friends! My wife and I adopted an adorable Chihuahua mix named Jasmine. We applied online and received a phone call in no time. All it took after that was a FaceTime home check (safer than in-person), and we were able to visit the dog at the foster home and bring her home almost right away. Anne was absolutely wonderful. She was helpful, super polite, and followed up with us several times after the adoption to make sure the dog was doing well in her new home. She also provided us with all the paperwork we needed (we are renting a home), some food for the dog, a few toys, her bed, a blanket, and even poop bags! Everything we needed to get started. The adoption fee was fair too, especially considering the dog was spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. I know there are quite a few negative reviews about this place, but honestly, I think they just do everything they can to ensure the dog will be going to a good home. Their interests are protecting the dog and doing what's best for the dog first. If you're a good fit, and your home is safe and there is zero chance of the dog escaping, getting lost, getting hurt etc, you will have no problem adopting from Retrievers and Friends. Highly questionable organization, they do not respond to email or phone calls. Very frustrating when you are willing and able to help. I say TRULY rescue a pal at the pound on your own terms minus the $400 fee, interviews and home inspections. I find this all to be a bit much especially when there is zero communication for your efforts. Do not waste your time here. I do not get the sense that they are in the business of finding these animals homes, rather this may be someone having found a way to be a justified dog hoarder. I'll admit I was a little hesitant at first because of the Yelp reviews, however I quickly noticed that they were all from denied applicants. Yes, Liz & her team are very selective but only because they've had decades of experience pairing rescues. My family and I applied in May and they got back to us immediately. After a few emails and a virtual house tour, we were invited to drive down & meet Winston. (We later renamed him Pablo when we learned he was a stray dog from Mexico). We were so pleased with the quick adoption process. Pablo is truly the best match for our family. He is the sweetest, most gentle, and loving companion dog. Never have I felt so misjudged by anyone. But leave it up to Liz to think that someone who works for a living cannot provide a wonderful home for a dog. I submitted an application three times to this organization. The first and second time I received zero response from anyone. The third and most recent time I applied for a dog I did not receive a response either so finally I filled out the contact form on their website to follow up on my application. I received a response from Liz who replied with: "Thank you for your application Your notes say you are gone 10 hrs a day is that right ? That would be a long day home alone for a dog. RFSC Liz" I explained to Liz that yes, I work like most responsible people do. I have a regular Monday-Friday 7am-4pm job with about 30 minutes of travel time each day. I explained to her that I have a dog currently who uses a doggy door when I'm gone, that I have cameras inside and outside my home and can talk to my dog through them, and that I even hire a dog walker 3 days a week to come walk my dog in the middle of the day to break up her day/week. What I was looking for was another dog to keep her company, a friend. You would think that someone who rescues dogs for a living would not hear that and think, "Wow, this person really cares about their dog. They hire a dog walker AND understand that dogs do better in packs." But instead, I get this response from Liz: "Thank you for your reply. I do not believe we have a match for you at this time. Thank you for your interest. RFSC Liz" I proceeded to ask her if I should continue to keep looking for another dog at her organization or is the fact that I'm gone 10 hours for work going to be an issue no matter what dog I'm interested in. Her reply was simply: "I don't think we have a match that would be ok being home alone that long. We are sorry." It honestly blows my mind that Liz doesn't expect owners to work for a living. How else am I supposed to be able to provide good, healthy food, proper vet care, and a home with a yard (which by the way, does not guarantee someone is going to be a great owner) if I do not work? Instead of asking me if I walk my dog daily, if I provide any type of mental stimulation for my dog, how we spend our time when I am home, Liz instead shut me down as a candidate because I simply have an 8 hour job. I have never been so offended nor have I had such a feeling of complete incompetence coming from a rescue that claims to know a lot about dogs and their needs. I was a vet tech in my previous job and have many friends in the field of rescuing dogs and training (something I also noted in previous applications). Customer service in a non-profit animal adoption center is vitally important to serving out its core values and mission. I am sadly disappointed that this organization chose to close off a potential owner because of one's location (if that was even the case). Its disappointing that this non-profit does not live up to the mission of placing these helpless animals in loving homes as quickly as possible within reasonable guidelines. Prior to completing the adoption application, I inquired about two different Poms. First, I inquired about a foster program in which they do not have one. Fine. I also shared that I only looked to rescue/adopt one. The responses to my questions were either half answered or not answered at all. Work smarter not harder? These questions were in regards to the history of the dogs, what the adoptions fees are, etc. After quite a few email exchanges and answering Liz's question of my location in downtown San Diego, I was told all of the sudden that there was a high demand for these dogs, to look elsewhere (she provided me a link to another website, petfinder.com), and was told that both dogs needs to be housed in a home with other dogs. The postings I've included does not specifically state that the Poms needed to be housed with other dogs as other dog postings did nor did Liz share that when I let her know I was looking for one dog. She didn't bother sharing about other possible dogs either. The website stated that volunteers would complete house visits within 1 hr radius from Temecula which my location is well within those guidelines. Also note, there is not a range of adoption fees listed on the website. I was told the adoption fee would be dependent on the type of dog...um I inquired about two Pomeranians? Again, another half answered question if you consider that answered at all. I didn't inquire about any other dogs but the two uploaded here. Shame on the their "management" skills making it extremely disappointing and difficult for many potential and loyal owners looking to rescue and adopt these loving animals. Such nonsense! There are MANY reviews listed here with similar issues and this is NOT THE ONLY SITE with COMPLAINTS against them. Something isn't right with this organization and am truly sad for the "dogs" caught in this and feel it's important to share my experience. Stepping out against BS. I have been aware of this rescue for many years (decades in fact). I became an adopter in 2017. What a match we were blessed with, a nine year old Lab (x?). Our "Buddy" recently passed away, a good long life he had. We were privileged to have him during his golden years. We can never thank the team at Retrievers and Friends enough, for saving this dog from his difficult past and making him available to people like us. It's a true mission you are on, and you do it well. Stay focused on the best interests of both the pets and the humans. Rescue done right is a very difficult and demanding thing. We recently rescued a standard poodle from Retrievers and Friends (Leo) and had an amazing experience. We have rescued dogs in the past and know there is a lot of work involved to transition this new family member into your home. Especially with any rescue, you need to be prepared to help the new family member adapt over time. Rescues come with a past that you may know about or need to figure out along the way by how the dog behaves and responds. Liz and team have the difficult task of trying to determine if the possible new home is a good fit for the dog, and more importantly, does the new owner have the needed skill set to successfully transition the dog and put them on a forever path. Many may feel they can do this, but the reality may be they are not a good fit. Investigating the possibility of a new family member can be an emotional experience. Being declined the opportunity can be upsetting. Many of the negative reviews on yelp are emotional and not fair to Liz and team who run an amazing rescue and do a really great job. It's been several months now since we rescued Leo as our new family member. It was a process that involved a lot of work and patience. My sister and I adopted our toy poodle, Charlie, from Retriever and Friends. We got a prompt response to our application and following a virtual home inspection, we made modifications to our outdoor space to meet their safety needs. We drove from Irvine to Menifee and brought Charlie home within a week and have enjoyed his company ever since. He's perfect and with time is now potty trained and his confidence is at an all time high - he's just a joy. Nancy, Liz, and Rob (Charlie's foster) were all very nice and gave us great support and instructions about his care. I'm sorry other people didn't have a good experience but we found this rescue to be nothing but courteous and professional. We've rescued two senior dogs before and this process didn't seem any different than others. Because of COVID, we did have a hard time getting rescues to respond to our apps (we put in about 10 apps for different dogs with various rescues) but we chalked it up to high volume of apps, nothing personal about the type of home we could provide. read more

I am not exactly sure what this rescue is looking for in a good home. My husband and I are in our late 30s, good jobs, nice home and are experienced with English bulldogs. Up until Sept 2019, were were a two bulldog home and we absolutely love the messy, stinky joy this breed has brought to our family. We lost our second bulldog in May of this year to cancer. We came across Sumo with this rescue. I submitted an application and the next day I had a call with Ann and a virtual home check. All seemed to be going great and we were getting so excited to start a new journey with our next dog. Ann said that we would hear back from Liz later that day and that Liz would be able to answer my questions. I sent a follow up email the next morning (understanding that they are volunteers and perhaps were busy) just to follow up and let them know that my husband and I were eager and available if they had any questions. We waited on pins and needles all day for a response. That evening, an email was sent from the rescue just before midnight. As I was responding the following morning, I received a text from Nancy and we continued the conversation there. I have included the screenshots so you can take a look for yourself at the exact conversation. We had not yet got any further details on Sumo to this point and bringing him home that afternoon would have been unfair to him. In a perfect world, I would like to have at least a day (prefer a week) with him in his new home before being left alone. My husband works from the office one day a week for an early morning shift. I work a typical 8-5 3 miles from home and I spend lunch breaks at home daily. The day they asked us to come see/adopt him was the day before my husband's in office day. This poor guy would have come home with us and spent a few hours in a new place before bed and then would have been left alone for 4 hours. Maybe I am a crazy dog mom, but the thought of being moved to a new home, not getting a chance to acclimate and then being left alone breaks my heart. I offered to come see him at the time they wanted but pick him up the next day instead and got the response "we do not feel this is a good time to adopt, sounds like you are very busy." Seriously!?! We are not too busy and could have easily accommodated him in our home that day but didn't think that was fair to Sumo. Literally any other day of the week works for us and would give us a week with him (with notice, I can also work from home). I called Nancy and left her a tear filled voicemail. She text me back and said to reach out later in the week. I told her we could come out and work around their schedule this week and have not heard back. I can't put my heart through anymore disappointment and am not going to put my family through this again with this rescue. This rescue is 100% allowed to deny me for any reason, however I feel like they are beyond unreasonable and feel so bad for their pets that are sitting in a kennel waiting for a good home. You are missing out on some amazing families by playing these games. If you are looking to adopt or surrender, find another rescue. read more

Only four because some of the communication was a bit laborious. Everything else was amazing. The facility is clean and charming and welcoming. The volunteers are knowledgeable and really give you time to get to know the dog. We ended up not adopting and they were supportive of that. They were also supportive when it appeared that we might be leaning towards adopting. The dog we met was just not a fit for us but some other family is going to get an AMAZING dog. Carson the black and white parti poodle was friendly, eager to please, attentive and intelligent. He is also soft. We did a fair amount of research on poodles before we were thinking about adopting him so whoever that family is will need to include grooming and exercise into his regiment. And he will need a lot of training on the leash. But he will do great. Not a fit for all of our family of four but will make an amazing addition to the right family. I had read the reviews after getting the green light to adopt and I kind of vowed to give my honest assessment so that is what you have read above. I don't submit reviews often but, for this one, I just had to. After reading all the negative reviews, I felt compelled to write one and share my experience with this rescue. We live in South OC, far from where this rescue is, so I can vouch, location doesn't matter to them. After submitting our application, Liz couldn't have been more pleasant and easy to work with if she tried. Not once, did I feel judged or questioned in any way but for what was best for the pup we were interested in. Liz made the whole process a wonderful experience and, as a pet owner for many, many years, I've had my share of experiences. After our FaceTime home inspection and going over our pet history things moved fairly quickly. We met our new family member and are so happy we were able to give this poor, scared little baby a much better life than whatever she had before and, judging by her demeanor, it was not a good one. After one week, I can see the spunky personality emerging! :) I have to say that I was very impressed with the place, it was clean, well maintained and the staff was very patient and gave us ample time to get to know our new baby. Not once did I feel dismissed when we asked questions. One top of that, they gifted her with her own little bed, blanket and toys! No other rescue has ever done that before. If you apply with them and are turned down, please keep in mind, they are the voices for these scared souls and they take their job very seriously and I don't blame them for turning down those they don't feel would be a good fit. I've also had my share of rejections and have to remind myself to not take it personally, it's not about me, it's about these poor animals who may have experienced things we don't even want to think about. read more

I wish I had pleasant things to say with my puppy sitting by my side. But Liz decided no. She denied our application, and said that a Rottweiler should not be outside. It is, according to Liz, unsafe to leave a large 75 lb. dog outside alone. The best part is when she said "The dog door would allow the pup outside alone and not be safe." It's called a dog door. It is unfortunate that the animals suffer the opportunity of having a loving, caring, long-term home because Liz places initial unfair judgement hand-picking who she allows continue with the adoption process. read more

I regularly donate and volunteer at adoption for pets over the years, and I cannot recall ever dealing with this level of deceitful behavior. This was our first time rescuing a dog and we could not be happier with the outcome. We wanted a terrier mix between 2 and 5 and saw "Toby" (now Stiglitz) on the retrievers and friends website. We filled out the application, did a phone interview and FaceTime so they could see our house and yard. The following day we drove to see this little cutie. The shelter is very nice and they take good care of the animals there. We fell instantly in love with this little dog and could not be happier. I do not recommend this organization. I recently submitted an application to begin the process of discussing the possibility of adopting from Retrievers and Friends. Although Liz was quick to respond, I found her communication to be short and very dismissive. Not quite understanding her email reply, I followed up to elaborate on my home, my pet ownership experience, and why, in my opinion for a number of reasons, I would be a well-qualified candidate to adopt. I was told that the dog that I was interested in "will have no problem getting a home so in his case we do not have to go outside of our area." From my perspective, Liz seems to have no interest in pairing her rescues with their match. Rather, she seems to be motivated by convenience. The only requirements they have are that you don't have a job, you never let a dog off-leash even in a fenced area, and you don't have multiple female dogs (obviously when female dogs are together they become aggressive, this is a statement that applies to all dogs no matter their background and training, according to this organization). The process is too selective. If you don't offer their idea of a "great home" you will get an illiterately worded email saying, "We do have a lot of interest in the pups and are reviewing a few of the many at this time" (Retrievers and Freinds of Southern California, 2021). Which for me meant... we spoke to you rudely on the phone once, never saw your property, never met your other animals, and decided you are unfit to care for this dog. Apparently when describing how our dogs love to run around our 2.5-acre property, how we do sometimes have to leave them at home to go to work or even take them to work when possible, all of these things made us sound like a terrible home for an animal. 10/10 would recommend to people whose time I want to waste. An easier option is to drive around and look for a dog. This way you will actually get to adopt a dog and you don't have to deal with Anita. P.S. If you get Anita as your volunteer, prepare for some condescending questions about how you will handle the dog while she herself is struggling to handle her own dog... Not joking. After I had some animals pass away, I knew it was time to get another dog. My son and I were very excited to find Rusty, a Frenchie, with this "rescue" place. I sent in the application and I am very qualified to have a dog, all boxes can be checked. I live in Long Beach, CA which is about an hour and ten mins away. I do the drive to Menifee often for jobs. I was sent back an email real quick saying no cause I was too far. The email was one sentence, kinda rude and no signature or sign off. Not how a non profit should respond to any email about rescuing any animal. After looking more into them, they should not be able to run a dog rescue. read more

Retrievers and Friends is the wonderful rescue organization where we recently adopted our newest family member, a sweet and loving dog named Jackson. The staff at this superior organization are dedicated to the companion animals they care for and are very careful about placement. Everyone there - Liz, Anne, Nancy, Rob - and all of the other staff and volunteers, are filled with love and kindness. They are all so supportive - not only to the animals they place, but to the people lucky enough to qualify as new pet parents.
