Signed my son up for training in mid April. After 10 cancellations, which trainer said he would make up, which didn't happen consistently, I finally cancelled his membership. As much as I hated to do so, I couldn't take the chance the 10 cancellations would turn to 15, then to 20. Just too much money to take the chance. I started to feel like they were running a racket. Train one day, then cancel, promises to fix and make up, cancel again. Then for me to cancel the contract, Retro and their billing department say they have nothing to do with the trainer... but the trainer and all the billing goes through Retro???? Made no sense. Still waiting to hear if I will get a refund, but anyone interested in signing up for training, beware! read more

There is criminal behavior at this gym. I have filed with the New Jersey Department of Consumer Protection. I have not been to this gym for 3 years. They refuse to cancel my membership. They never stopped charging me. Anna, the general manager is extremely rude and incompetent. She refused to send me any documentation needed for my case. There billing with a third party makes a lot of mistakes. I went in and froze my husband account and I thought I did it for three months. Long behold it was only for one month. I went in and the young man said it was an error and she would extend it and my next payment wasn't until November. Well, will billed in October. After three calls to the center I finally get a call back and said I am out of luck. They only had the one month file. I thought I was a fan of this Retro Fitness because of how well-maintained the facility was, but the customer service is pretty unreal. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, but this experience left a sour taste in my mouth. I go here and I comply with all their rules and regulations (did the covid test online, took my temperature) and checked in. No problem. I see a couple deadlifting around the deadlift area, and not to call them out but they were not wiping down their equipment at all after usage. I made sure to wipe down my equipment before and after usage (they can bring up their cameras and see). I waited for them to get off, and I politely asked them if they were finished. They said yeah and I went to do what I usually do and clean the equipment before usage. I started to deadlift the exact same way as the couple, loudness and all, and the staff came up to me and proceeded to scold me for dropping the weights too loudly when the other couple was doing the same exact thing. He also started to question me whether or not I was cleaning up after myself when I have clearly been doing it after each use. They literally called me out for something that other people were doing. It doesn't help that I was the only person of Asian descent in the whole facility, so for him to ask me to check myself about cleaning up made me feel uncomfortable so I left promptly. DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM I called and physically went in to the gym and was told the policy changed and I only needed to pay for the next month. I was told this on the phone and when I went in person to the gym. I had to go in person to complete a cancellation form which was emailed to me 8/16/19. Today the manager calls and tells me I have to pay to the end of my original contract runs. Why was I given a document cancelling after a last bill date of 8/26/19 and told by 2 people it is a new policy and now the manager says she will put me in collections if I don't pay. REALLY your employee changed that contract twice and put it in writing. No wonder no-one goes there anymore and the place was sold. KEEP AWAY or get ripped off. Can I put 0 stars? it should be. UPDATE New owner Ron Pfeiffer the new owner just called he is canceling the contract, offered 1 month free and 1 free session with trainer. He was very professional and accommodating. I felt very uncomfortable with seeing the lady coach with the black hair. She had a bad attitude towards some folks. The parking lot was surrounded by tape and cones at 2:00 pmish and the coach made a rude joke that it's to force the people to walk there from the parking lot near Applebee's, that would not be fair for anyone but mostly the elderly. The gym needs coaches with positive attitudes and respects others too. The janitor with the glasses and skinny body that cleans the female restroom/locker room was very sweet and kind to lots of folks even me and my folks. read more

I've been going to retro fitness since February the 4th and Forked River New Jersey. The staff as well as the entire personal training team have been great to me. I have been in a motorized wheelchair for a year and a half since I started going back to the gym I have gotten a lot stronger easier to transfer out of my wheelchair I can also walk on the treadmill as long as I have my leg braces on. The nice coach lady with the black hair has a funny sense of humor and is very kind and professional and I never feel uncomfortable having a conversation with her. Rachel is my personal trainer she is great I have also had Nick as my personal trainer as well as the coach lady with black hair. To anyone who is suffering from a disability whether you're in a walker, using a cane, or in a wheelchair go down to the retro in Forked River and they will definitely get you stronger. I forgot Patty keeps the front of the house clean she's always sweeping and washing the windows and cleaning the counters if I was looking for a roommate she definitely be first on my list. read more

I joined Retro upon my first time visiting. I'm new to town, and was in desperate need of a new gym to join. I was skeptical about becoming a member, but surprised and impressed by the facility. While it's smaller than the Gold's I previously belonged to, it's clean and bright. The staff was kind enough to honor their Monday Madness promotion, on a Sunday because we wouldn't be back in town until Wednesday when we closed on our new home. I'm excited because the VIP membership is affordable, and includes classes and tanning!!! read more

I started working out at this gym back in 2013. Four years later, I was hired to teach a weekly Zumba class. My experience as both a member and an employee has always led me to recommend Retro to friends, family, and strangers on the internet. The counter staff was always friendly, helpful, and accommodating to me as both a member and an instructor. I've seen more than a few managers come and go over that time, but the manager in charge when I resigned really seemed to be making efforts to improve the operations, experience, and value overall. The only detractor: the group fitness room is so small! Bumping elbows and swapping sweat isn't fun when you're trying to focus on your form. read more

Every staff member I've seen has been happy, smiling & helpful,whether she is there or not.I'd know, I'm there 5 mornings a week,2-3 hrs each time. U shouldn't speak for others.I too, have been a member for 4+ yrs. I've grown to know a lot of the staff, old & new! Lots of staff come & go.Some even stay for a while! It's a job,it's a business; some people get too comfortable & don't maintain performance as when they first started. Others R the opposite,they grow & become better,not losing sight of their job duties! U have no right to comment on something you may have overheard. U have no idea what the entire conversation was. You're funny though w/UR comment about Julie, I guess she told U no pacifiers while working out. Julie is a great,strong single mom! She took her own time & decorations to make sure Retro had a great looking tent At the towns trick or treat trail. She does classes & during them she's super positive& encouraging.She gets bothered all hours of the day & night w/Retro. Somehow she is there fixing it, dealing w/it & in the end making whatever it is better. U know Julie lost her summer,her time w/her family &kids!! She gave everything to retro to make it run smooth & help the transition of owners and changes in the gym.She is a great manager.Do you know how many hours she put in? Too many!You're right though she doesn't make the same effort, she puts in more many times. OK, here we go! The new director of fitness is Vanesa. She is almost 30 & has dedicated her life to health & fitness. She has some big names backing her as sponsors. She even has a personal gym in her basement that some people only dream of. Vanesa is beyond professional & extremely knowledgeable about every part of being the best U. Knowing how to overcoming plateaus, eating to lose based on Ur body type, because everyone is different. She knows how to help each person to what they need. She is giving her life to being the best her & teaching others the same.I can go on about what she knows.She is super helpful to everyone! Even members she doesn't train. She is so far from being cocky & full of herself. What, are U mad because she is beautiful,smart & being her best self while helping others? Remember,she was hired as a trainer & then after a few weeks got promoted.Growth within! I strongly believe these people U have spoken to R just in your mind. Retro is more friendly now than it ever has been, even the members.If you've been a member for as long as U say, then why do U have simple questions? I guess U don't really pay attention.I wouldn't call the"young adults"behind the counter"Kids". Do U not know the difference?Message me I'll explain it to U. This gym is a very clean gym. You always see staff wiping down the equipment, which reassures me that the machines are not covered in germs or sweat. I am a relatively new member but I already feel as if I'm achieving my goals. The only thing I would suggest is adding in a sauna for some post workout relaxation or a pre-workout warm-up. Other than that the gym is phenomenal and I really enjoy going here. read more

I would like to make a formal complaint, and whether this will be taken into consideration or not doesn't matter, however, this issue needs to be brought up. The management at the Retro Fitness in Forked River, NJ is horrible. Julie has poor customer service, and always has an attitude. I can speak for myself, and judging by how unhappy the staff looks whenever she's around, I bet I can speak for them as well. I have been a member at this club for 5+ years, and I have grown to know the staff. I believe the old manager Melissa was set up by Julie because I have heard Julie say to her, "just take it, it's fine" or "I'll clock you out it's fine", and I don't know why Melissa was fired, but that seems like a sabotage situation to me (as a person with a degree in business management). I also know that she has been rotating the same three people on the schedule (judging by who I see the most), and I know full well that there are more than three employees working there. Ron, the owner is an amazing person, and he seems like he is trying his best to make sure this gym is constantly improving, but Julie doesn't seem to be making that same effort. My next complaint about that club is the new director of fitness, she is young, and has a very cocky attitude acting like she is better than everybody. All of the people I have spoken to said that they do not like the new fitness director, and they have contemplated going to a different club just because of her AND the manager. Many people do not like the new management, and are going to cancel their memberships because they do not feel welcome at the gym anymore because of her and Vanessa the new fitness director. I have called to ask simple questions, and run an investigation of my own, and while the kids on the phone do not sound 100% professional, they are kids and I get it, however, anytime I ask for the manager during the week they say that she is not there, and when I go in 10 minutes later (I live down the road) she is standing behind the counter usually on her phone. I do not know what you can do about this issue, but the staff seems miserable, and you are soon going to be losing members all due to one or two people. Maybe something that you can do is send a corporate member down here and conduct one on ones with each employee alongside Ron, and ask them how they feel about the manager and the fitness director, and see their input, make sure to give them immunity, so they know that whatever they tell you won't be shared with the people in question because then they will not tell you the truth and how they actually feel. The only people that can truly tell you what goes on behind the scenes is the kids that are being thrown around by management. If you are a serious gym-goer, you spend most of your time in the free weights area. This gym is small. You an literally fit about 3-4 benches, max, near the DB area. And you have people about a foot away from you in both directions as you are lifting. It is so tight. There is absolutely no where to do walking lunges. The downstairs, where the weights are, is long, but extremely narrow and everything is crammed into this space. There is one "jungle gym" with cables that you can never, ever get on if you went to use both cables and do any sort of chest/fly workout. They have no Hammer Strength equipment for back whatsoever. It is a club that is more for social gatherings, than actually working out for most people that attend. There are vacant spaces next door that would be so beneficial for expansion. On a positive note, the facility is clean and the equipment is in good shape. I spend most of my time in other Retro locations because of the overcrowding and small space. read more

I am/was a member of your gym as well as a member in retro fitness' training sessions. In late May/early June I severely injured my lower back during a training session with a man name Billy doing exercises that put too much strain on my back. (Which I told him during my session) This injury has rendered me unable to continue with the gym under the direction of my physician. A gym member spoke with Russ the training manager today who quickly dismissed any consideration for refunding the over 34 training sessions I have been unable to use. I find it grossly inappropriate to take money from me when I was injured during a training session provided by your fitness staff. I am continuing to request that these sessions be refunded. I will be letting EVERY SINGLE SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLET KNOW THAT THIS IS HOW CUSTOMERS ARE TREATED!!! read more

I joined the Retro Fitness in Forked River even before they opened. Right from the start I have worked with a trainer. For the last 2 years I trained with Michelle. As a trainer, Michelle is extremely knowledgeable in the areas to work and the equipment to use. She blends fun in with the work outs, which makes it more enjoyable. Michelle pushes me because she knows I want to really work my body. She also makes sure my form is correct. I'm very happy with my work outs with Michelle. This facility is clean, there are plenty of machines and the staff is friendly and helpful. I would not work out anywhere else. read more

I joined during a promotion that said get 3 free months with a 12 month membership. They told me I would get the free months at the end of my paid year. Never happened! They charged me $2.33 once and then continued to charge me full price. I cancelled my membership there. read more

I love love love my gym. The classes are awesome, with really good timings. The staff is always so friendly and helpful. Its clean and organized. Really nice gym, though the colors remind me of a hotdog. I signed up during the "wacky Wednesdays" in February where you get 3 months free but they trick you by actually making you pay for the first year and then 3 months free at the end... Whatever though. I have the VIP membership so I get tanning and classes, which is a nice treat. It's a stand-up tanning bed, the bulbs aren't changed as often as they should be... Six bulbs were out before they were swapped! But I give my high rating on the personal training and cleaning crew. I always see workers cleaning the equipment, floors, etc. which makes me feel good - no one wants to get MRSA or athletes foot from a dirty person! The trainers are very nice, attentive, and will even help you when they're working out on their own time. Russ really helped motivate me to work out and get in shape for a Spartan Race and paired me with Matt who has been awesome so far. If you are considering personal training, I highly recommend it! read more

I had just moved to Lanoka harbor not too long ago. After spending most of my tenure in Meridian, I figured it would be more convenient to switch to a local club. However, this was the biggest mistake I could've made. Initially, the music was loud and obnoxious. Then, I wanted to see what services they offered for personal fitness, due to doctors recommending me to strengthen my core. Well, I didn't see a training department, I saw a college frat party. The first trainer I witnessed was tall with a backwards cap, walking around like he owned the place as his customer apathetically followed behind him. This was immeasurably a huge turn off. Then, a fellow girlfriend of mine, got hurt during a fitness meeting with a trainer who admittedly claimed he was new. Who followed up their workout with immediately removing his uniform and unconcernedly went to workout while groaning like the rest of the maniacs. I am unaware of this is the gym as a whole or just the evenings, but this is totally unacceptable and professional. Women's bathroom was disgusting to top it all off. I will never return to this establishment! read more

I would give group fitness 5 stars but the facility as a whole is the 3. The front desk staff could be nicer and this ticket system is rediculous. If I'm running late and there's no one at the desk to print a ticket, you either have to wait until someone has to acknowledge you or go to class and get the ticket afterwards. And then have the instructor embarrass you because you don't have a ticket. In this day and age there has to be a better system. Maybe a scanner at the door that would prevent non vip members from entering or a sticker on their membership card that can be shown to the teacher. Something has to change. It's unfair to have the teacher interrupt class to check to see if everyone is a vip. And it isn't fair to the members to have the instructor stop everytime someone someone comes in late to see if they've gotten a ticket. Thank you for considering a paying members advice.
