My roommate invited me to join her at Retro Fitness today and we had a great workout session. Her membership allows for a free guest anytime she wants, which really seems like an awesome perk! We went at about 4pm and it wasn't as packed as I anticipated, based on my experiences at other local gyms. The space is made up of two large floors- the first floor houses most, if not all of their machines and in basement lives all the free weights. All the fellow gym goers followed proper cool-gym etiquette and seemed very chill (asking if your using nearby equipment, smiling and nodding, throwing in the occasional funny banter, etc). While a lot of the equipment seems a tad outdated, they still get the job done. In fact, I kind of dig the old school vibe this place has. While I have a membership at a gym only about a 10 minute drive away, I'll definitely be joining her here for an awesome super local gym experience. The best part of this gym is it's location. There are no amenities like the local gyms in the area and they charge you astronomical fees, including a yearly fee, when you don't have a yearly contracted plan. This is a very shady and deceptive practice to make money although to give the appearance as if you are getting a deal. If you have the ability to, choose another gym that will actually make it worth your while. I wish I would have known that there is literally nothing in there aside form the machines, which are often not functioning as they should, and they charge more than the gyms that have saunas, pools, etc... With that being said, I gave an additional 2 stars solely for the people and trainers that work there. They are great and very helpful. But the gym itself leaves a lot to be desired especially at the price with the additional fees they charge. read more

Wow, this gym is going down the tubes fast So much equipment is not working anymore or pieces are missing which makes the equipment unusable The water fountains are broken Cleaning supplies, and paper towel dispensers are always empty The subscription on one of the Expresso bikes has expired and no one has renewed it Employees, when they are around, are too busy behind the front desk on their phones and don't want to be bothered with customers Its a shame that this Retro used to be one of the best ones around, now they are the worst :-( read more

Pros: - Great instructors who actually care about their clients and want to see them succeed. Shoutout to Xavier, Eubie, Maggy, Jose, Kara, Shawn, Natalie (and Pat and Cindy who are sorely missed!) There is a nice sense of community, especially amongst the ladies that take classes. Gymgoers are friendly and encouraging. - The pricing is very reasonable. $25 is a great value for unlimited classes. - The new maintenance person is doing a much better job of keeping the gym clean. The studio is usually spotless and the restrooms are being stocked a lot better than in previous times. Cons: - Lack of schedule variety (timewise). No early morning classes and only two Saturday classes. - Lack of equipment. I absolutely love Wednesday evening Spin with Xavier but I have to leave work early (I hope my boss isn't reading this) just to get a bike. 9 times out of 10 Xavier hands over her bike to someone just so they can take the class. Lack of free weights and barbell clips. Members who have resorted to purchasing our own. - Management is aloof. read more

Used to be the best gym around for the price but they don't maintain the equipment well and move things around constantly. It's hard to find the machines you need sometimes since there's no real organization to them. I used to use the class room to work out on a mat when there were no classes in session but a month or two ago the door was locked instead (i havent trid again after that so maybe it was a random incident, Idk) They also just closed the entire back section of the gym to be used for trainers only and I rarely see more than 1 trainer and client working out there so it's really just a waste of space. It seems like they're trying to revamp their classes which is an improvement. They lowered the price for them so they definitely seem like a good deal if you like group workouts and they fit in your schedule. The app is worth getting if you go regularly but the old manager used to be very stingy when you tried to redeem the rewards and said you could only use the free month every year when it's your joining anniversary month. I'm not sure if the new manager has different rules. I don't use much at the gym so it still works for me since it's cheap and convenient but if you're looking for amenities and a top of the line place I wouldn't recommend it for you. read more

Not exactly sure why this gym has received such a low rating. This is the first time I used this facility (I workout at the Rego Park location) came here on a Monday afternoon to kill some time while my car was being repaired. This location is huge! There are 2 floors and plenty of equipment so you're not waiting around for someone to finish their set- 1st floor: cable machines, cardio equipment, personal trainer area, group workout room, bathrooms/lockers. Lower level: weight lifting equipment (free weights) All of the equipment was in good working condition, the gym was clean, the bathroom and locker room also clean. I didn't sign up originally to this retro fitness and I've been to many from Oceanside, Hewlett, Park Slope, Ave U and I must say the Freeport gym is by far the best one them all. For the record I'm old school so anything and everything that's old I prefer...pause...except my milk and by milk I mean the kind you buy at the store as well as the one my current woman biologically carries around with her. Besides that I just like old school things including my gym which means I cannot stand the current explosion of gym centers where people take more selfies than they lift weights and never re-rack their weights because courtesy is also an old school behavior as well. I prefer my gym old school as well which means I want iron plates, not plastic. I don't want air condition opting instead for the funk of people working out and the only music I want to hear while I'm working out is the sound of men grunting. In other words i want that Rocky III gym where Apollo took Rocky to "fix him." But gyms like that are no longer around, not even in jail (don't ask me how I know that) so when considering a gym now a person has to accept old school when it comes to a gym is no longer an option. That scenario makes Retro Fitness of Freeport an ideal gym for people who want to get a serious old school workout with modern day amenities. The gym is so damn big you have to consider having a passport to get from one end of the gym to another. There are acres of machines so even during the busy hours which are the evenings waiting is not usually an option. The staff are incredibly friendly and that's surprising given the fact they're young and young people tend to "forget their manners" but not at this Retro location. An old man like me would prefer not having air conditioning and no music but old men like me like to go on websites and complain about good things so don't mind me but do mind Retro Fitness of Freeport. I joined about a month ago. I picked this place because it's right down the street from my house, has really good hours AND the best part is they have a child care room. The monthly cost is low and there are great amenities like the smoothie counter, and workout accessories for sale. This particular gym is two levels and so there is alot to maintain. Although very friendly and helpful, I do wish the staff would stay up on maintenence and custodial things. Since it is usually packed,things like the garbage filling up fast or running out of paper towels, it's important. Otherwise, I LOVE this place! Don't do it! This gym is the worst. They charge you $50 per year in addition to the $20 fee but they don't tell you that when you sign up. It's hidden in the 100 pages of fine print. I just tried to utilize my membership (30 min run on the treadmill before it closes at 7pm and I was told I couldn't bc the gym closes at 6. The door says 7pm. Take the sign off the door if you close earlier. This location is always changing hours and not letting the paid customers know. Disgusting! read more

Staff was extremely helpful in explaining the payment plans/ options. I ended up paying for the year in full+2 months because it was cheaper and averaged to less than $20 a month. I also was giving a free smoothie from their smoothie bar. The gym is clean and well maintained. There's tons of cardio machines and haven't had to wait for equipment yet. Retro Fitness - Gyms Near Me - Freeport, New York

This has to be the worst gym on Long Island. My boyfriend and I began going to the Freeport location because we recently moved and this gym was close by. We both went here at 5am in the morning when the gym first opens when you would think everything would be PERFECT. Unfortunately we found that it was the exact opposite. First, everyday in the morning there is the same lazy piece of crap girl who sits at the front. She sits furthest from the door with her head down into her phone, both headphones in, and never bothers to look up. What ever happened to customer service? I don't care if you want to sit there with your headphones in, but at least acknowledge that someone just walked in with a "good morning" or a head nod. I've also seen several people walk by without scanning their cards. I probably could have never joined and just showed up everyday without her noticing. Second, the gym is dirty and unorganized in the morning. Seriously, at 5am WHEN IT OPENS it looks like none of the night workers bothered to clean up from the previous evening rush. Additionally, the lazy piece of crap girl who sits at the front that I previously mentioned obviously doesn't care about the condition of the gym because I've never seen her get up to organize anything. Half the time I can't even find dumbbells on the main floor that match because they're scattered every which way, along with the plates, kettle bells, and mats that don't ever seem to have a place except thrown and left by inconsiderate members. Third, downstairs in the weight room is just horrendous. 35lb weights are where the 50lb weights should be etc etc and there are plates left by members on EVERY single bench press. One time my boyfriend was in the weight room where he saw a guy lifting weights wearing no shirt and blasting some recorded motivational speech while he left his bodily fluids on everything he touched. The members don't give a fuck about their surroundings. Fourth, I've never seen a single cleaning person at this location and I've never seen anyone but myself wipe a bench or a machine. It's a dirty place. I understand that at every gym there will those assholes who don't re-rack their weights or wipe down benches/machines when they're done using them, but the fact of the matter is that the STAFF are what sets the standard here. It is clear that they don't give a fuck about the facility. I used to go to Blink Fitness in Baldwin and that gym was absolutely magnificent. They greet you with smiles on their faces, the gym is SPOTLESS, and there is always a cleaning person wiping down machines/bathrooms. Also, I always saw the staff walking around making sure everything was where it was supposed to be. Retro Fitness could learn something from them. The ONLY redeeming quality about this location is the general manager, Imir. He was a huge help, super accommodating, and seemed to notice the issues the gym was having and told us he was actively trying to solve them. He needs more recognition. Horrible location - looks nasty. The rep did not even care about me when I walked in. I had to wave to get her attention. She would not even tour the facility with me. I love the gym because it is huge! Alot of free weights and equipment, heavy bags...i love that! HOWEVER this is one of the dirtiest gyms I've ever been to, the bathrooms and locker rooms are nasty! When I joined I was told I can cancel anytime with 30 days notice. Well I did that, when I cancelled. They kept charging my credit card. No matter how many times I told then I was told I may cancel anytime, after giving 30 days notice....... they still kept charging my credit. Bait & Switch To The Fulliest I joined Freeport Retro Fitness in November of 2017 after checking the gym out and having policy conversations with the manager about attending classes in the Freeport and Hempstead locals. (which are both owed by the same person).  I was told that if I paid $24.99 a month I could attend unlimited classes in both locations.  I was elated and signed the contract that day.  I began taking spin classes immediately.  From November until today there was no problem (with the expectation of them cancelling classes) with me taking the early weekday spin classes in Freeport and the weekend spin classes in Hempstead.  In 2018 there was this push for gym goers to obtain a ticket for the classes.  Mind you I have frequently gone into the Freeport facility as well as the Hempstead facility and asked if I needed a ticket and was told no it's okay go ahead on to the class. Now today I go to the 6:00 am Spin Class at retro fitness and first of all there is NO ONE at the front desk for me to request a ticket for the class.  I was there at least 15 minutes and still no one at the desk.  Eventually I went out and evidently the receptionist noticed I was looking for her and she asked if I needed a ticket for the class. I responded that I did and she went to the computer to try to print up a ticket, lo and behold I'm told that she can't print tickets because I'm not a member of the Freeport gym. She could not contact her manager at that time and said that she would address it once the manager came in I went on and took the 6 a.m. class.  I am turn call the Freeport gym later in the day and spoke with the manager Paula.  I was told that because they transferred my membership to Hempstead because I go to more classes in Hempstead that I had to pay $2 to take the class in Freeport. This was not what I was told when I signed my contract. I explain to Paula that even if that was a policy that they were implementing now those of us who signed up based on being told that we could attend unlimited classes in both places should not be penalized for the confusion which was based on the customer's part but with the previous management that was in place and provided this information.  I believe someone's from corporate office should get in touch with me so that we can discuss this in a civil manner.  I should not be required to pay $2 per class after being told paying the additional $5 a month would cover any classes that I wanted to take at either location. read more

9-26-2016: Gym was NOT open at 5am! I was there, no lights on and people standing outside waiting to get in! Stop lying and fix your staffing issues. Revised rating: If I could give ZERO stars, I would. Yet again, this gym did NOT open today (9/26/2016) at their posted opening time of 5am. So when a manager responded to my first review stating they care about their customers, I guess this proves how much they care. Only this time around, it was cold outside so I'm sure those members standing outside at 5:20am freezing their butts off appreciated the manager's care and concern. If it wasn't for all the loyal customers who actually need this location, I would say it needs to go out of business or at least change ownership. This place is completely and utterly unreliable if you need to get in your workout before you head out for work. It's brutal....again, I've seen gyms not open in the morning at the posted time for a variety of reasons but it only happens once or twice a year. This is the 7th time in the past 2 months. Staff is courteous, big facility, plenty of machines and weights. Seems cleaner than a lot of other gyms I have gone to and machines are repaired a lot faster than other gyms when they break. Loved that they had later hours but they only had them for a few days and they cut back even on those few days. I have another retro half the distance from my house but come here for the size and the parking too. If they had longer hours for more days I would come more often rather than going to the one closer to my house. read more

I had been going to Retro Fitness in Freeport for the past two years until recently I had to cancel my membership. Im moving out of state and the closest retro is 45 min away :( ...I was nervous that the whole canceling process was going to be a nightmare (based on reviews), ESPECIALLY because I already moved out of state. Well let me ease your worries if you are in the same situation..The manager, IMIR, is the NICEST person you will ever meet. He remembered me once I told him my name over the phone, which shows he cares about his gym members, and I CANCELLED MY MEMBERSHIP over the phone. I just needed to send him proof I moved out of state. Freeport location is beyond lucky to have him managing their gym, especially compared to the horrific manager they had before! I am happy canceling my membership was simple, but I am actually pretty upset because how much i loved the Freeport location! Cynthia are Eubie are AMAZING TRAINERS and i absolutely loved their classes. They made the classes fun to go to, and I saw some serious results. Retro Fitness in freeport has a deceiving contract. There is a cancellation fee of 40.00 that is not mentioned in the contract. Yet the Manager by the name of Amir highlights statements in reference to EFT..which is electronic transfer ... I prefer blink.. different level plans and they tell you the ins and outs no surprises. This gym is probably one of the worst gyms I've ever been to. There is a foul odor that lingers around the entire gym every time I go in. It says they open at 5 am but they literally never open on time. I understand having a 10-20 minute, but an hour to an hour & half delay is ridiculous. Retro Fitness in Freeport has been my worst experience at a fitness establishment I've ever had. I used to rely on them for my morning workout and shower before work, until there were several mornings where staff would forget to open or sleep in, and i was forced to go and work 10 hours with no shower. This has happened more than once with ZERO compensation. I was never informed about "maintenance fees" which they charge you for every 3 months. I was also never informed that you need to pay an additional 2 months just to quit your membership. Awful customer service as well, I've been hung up on while trying to confront why they haven't opened some mornings, and when I asked about quitting and the fees that they hide from customers. This is one of those awful experiences that is going to make me GO OUT OF MY WAY to let people know how awful my whole experience has been. Just started going to freeport Retro Fitness but you guys definitely need a manager on the weekends. Also, when I came by last saturday the young lady that fave me the tour wasn't knowledgeable about the different memberships or current promotions etc. She explained to me that she was new & there were no managers onsite. The women's locker room was filthy & I noticed trash on the gym floor as we walked around which I pointed to her. My first day at the gym was 1/20, which went well & the gym was clean. I still didnt see a cleaning staff walking around ensuring the gym was tidy which is a must. Management needs to tighten up on the weekends, starting with having someone at the front desk knowledgeable about memberships and a manager onsite. read more

This gym used to be nice but after my experience with the unprofessional manager it killed my passion for this gym. The manager ,a middle aged lady, storms into the dance studio and starts complaining about the volume of the music I was playing from the speaker. Mind you that room is meant for dancing and that speaker is much louder when classes are in there. Now at the time I was using it there were no classes scheduled, so what is the point of advertising all this expansion when you can't even use all parts of the gym.. Why do I pay my membership if I can't go and use the gym I pay for? That's ridiculous, but perhaps I would've been more understanding if she came in and politely asked me to turn down the music , but instead she comes in with an attitude, ridicules me in front of another member, aggressively unplugs the speaker with my wallet on it, and storms out. I can't believe they took away Magaly's Saturday 10:30 Zumba morning class. Really stupid move. She attracts more people for her classes than any other instructor. People who pay for classes are pissed because of the removal of this class. People who work weekdays, nights and weekends USED to be able to attend her Saturday 10:30 class. All I can say is that if retro continues to remove her classes, her following is going to follow her wherever she teaches. Too bad for Retro. They should really rethink giving her the Saturday class back. read more

I downloaded Yelp just so I could write a review about this place. Make sure you understand EVERYTHING about their policy BEFORE you join. They charge maintenance fee in addition to your membership fee and to terminate your membership you have to give 60 days notice which you will be charged for even if your contract is up. read more
