The Retro Fitness in Manasquan is consistently late to open. The hours posted state 4:00 am opening however I have been there many mornings at 5:00 am and no one is there. Forget about working out here on weekend afternoons! Parents drop their kids off and use it as daycare for their teenagers! These kids utilize multiple machines at the same time, sitting there glued to their cellphones! They run all around the gym, going behind the front desk yelling to one another F this, F that, as if it's recess time! They have no clue about proper gym etiquette, leaving their weight around and never reracking their weights! I know clue to how the owners let these minors workout there with out a chaperone! It has to stop!!!! Moreover, the place is filthy, they said they have new cleaners, but it's still gross! Multiple pieces of equipment have been broken for months! This is, without question, the best gym in the Wall - Manasquan - Point Pleasant Beach area. Owner Colin works hard to make everything in the gym a positive experience for gym users. New, well-cared for equipment, good ventilation and a clean environment with very nice clientele make for one of the most enjoyable workout experiences you can have. Membership is a very reasonable and modest monthly fee many, many times lower than other gyms nearby eg. Atlantic Club, Vive Fitness or Brielle Sports Club. Way to go Retro Fitness Wall! read more

Do I particularly like waking up at 5am to workout? Not really but it's the only time that fits into my and my husband's busy schedules. Arrived an hour and 45 minutes after the gym was supposed to open this morning and the light are dark and doors are locked. I also understand that things happen, workers get sick or miss their shift... but there has to be a way to contact someone in these instance to open the facility, like the emergency contact number that Jersey Strong of Wall has posted on their front door. There is a regular gym crowd at 5:45am of about 25 people or so, most of us sat in the parking lot this morning hoping that someone would come... even as of 6:30 no one was there to open. I've been a member of this gym for several years now - I was one of the "transfers" to Retro when the Brielle Sports Club in Wall closed down. The overwhelming amount of 2 star reviews here is surprising to me. Maybe it's because I'm part of the morning crowd, and never have an issue getting access to cardio and/or machines. For the average 'gym rat,' this place has all the basics one would need - extensive cardio equipment on first and second floors, full free weight section, squat racks, room to stretch, smoothie bar, locker rooms and tanning (don't forget day care for those with kids). Since you get points every time you show up, I've accrued enough points in the past to afford me some free merchandise and free months of tanning. Maybe another reason I love this place is because I have befriended so many of the morning 'regulars' who have actually become my friends outside the gym. Knowing I can see those familiar faces every morning in the gym motivates me, and gives me a sense of purpose. When I was recently laid off from my job, I started working out later in the morning (9am vs. 5am) and actually missed seeing my crew on a daily basis. Basic membership is only $20/mo. so if you're expecting L.A. fitness royalty, this won't be the place for you. This is also by no means a "raw" gym, but you can absolutely get fit here, stay fit here, and have fun/meet cool people while doing it. It's up to you. read more

I have read a number of reviews both negative and positive for this place and I am a little confused as to where I worked out today...and several times before this (This Retro is not my home gym). I have used a number of Retros, both locally and out of state. This is my favorite one. Now the "why".... It first starts with the greetings. Every time I entered this place I was greeted as if I had been a regular member. That's just not from the front desk personnel but even the trainers and office people. It immediately places a positive spin on it. It might not mean much to many others but the festive entrance way is pretty nice too. Secondly, the place is spread out with more machines than others within the area. The machines looked pretty clean and in good shape to me for devices that are used over and over again all day long. I am not a clean freak but I didn't see nor smell anything different than many other gyms that I have been in. The place has been kept up over the years. Finally....this goes to Helen, the general manager, thank you for expressing your passion for Retro. It was nice to see people who enjoy working for a company and share that feeling with others. I have been a retro member for 10+ years as well as an employee of Retro many years ago. This locations should be absolutely ashamed of how they conduct business and not only will I never return to this location I will make sure that my friends and family also pull their membership. The fitness director was 100% out of line speaking to my husband and mother tonight in regards to them working out together and accusing my husband of "personal training" her. She is unprofessional, inappropriate and hostile raising her voice at my family and pointing her finger in my husband face in front of the entire gym. She threatened to pull their memberships, pull up footage of them on their cameras and embarrassed them in front a crowd of people because they were working out together. This trainer also nastily approached me and my mom a week ago as well as accusing me of being a personal trainer and training my mom when we were simply working out together because we are FAMILY. Not only was the Freehold location (our home base, we recently moved) appalled at hearing this, we will be on the phone first thing tomorrow morning with corporate. You have lost long time members at a time when competition is probably at its highest right now. read more

Ive been coming here since they opened. Very clean, lots of parking, great classes, great personal trainers (my friend did 6 months of personal training and it really made a difference for her). Would give 5 stars, but the Wednesday nite yoga class is either packed or just a few people. If there's less than 5 people, then there's no yoga. read more

Wow! This is my favorite gym by far, out of all the retro fitness' I've been to this one stole the show. They have so much equipment. Two floors, and so much to offer! Many of the gyms I've been to had half of what this one did. I got in a jam packed 3 hour workout trying out all the equipment my other gym didn't have and at the end of it all got a delicious shake with plant based powder and some complimentary add ons (thnx!) highly suggest to anyone!! read more

Amazing does not explain the service and staff at Retro Fitness in Manasquan, NJ. The people and facilities are absolutely incredible. From day one, I felt welcomed and energetic to get my work out on. The vibe is very positive and as a result I'm in the best shape of my life. Almost forgot - the shakes are delicious and affordable! Josh and Rachael are two staff members that I need to mention. Every time I see them I get a friendly hello and smile. They even remember my name! Coming from an American Ninja Warrior competitor.. To be honest, the thought of signing up for a gym membership and my day one at the gym were some of the most intimidating things for me, not knowing whether or not I could hold myself to the commitment or even if I would "enjoy" being a part of a club gym. After a few days at this Retro many years ago, I was inspired by the very welcoming and supportive staff and friendly atmosphere of people amped up about a healthy and positive lifestyle, all readily willing to share fitness advice if you were looking for it. The gym is well outfitted to give you a dynamic workout for every muscle group, machines for a cardio burnout, and a fun upperbody rig and turf area to get creative with your workouts. After just a few sessions, I was hooked! The staff and facility at Retro Fitness of Manasquan, NJ made going to the gym no longer something that I "had" to do, but rather something that I "got" to do after a long day. I was inspired enough by the energy and people at this Retro Fitness that I pushed myself to show up and get stronger every day, even to the point where I started competing on American Ninja Warrior. Everything about this gym is what pushed me to get as strong and as confident in myself as I am today, from the awesome and positive greeting when you first walk in the door, to picking up your favorite protein shake that's always in stock on the way out of it. For the price, it's great. It has all the basics. But over the past few months they've converted it to way more of a cross fit facility. I'm not a cross fit junkie and this is extremely annoying how the machines were crammed together to make room for a large red carpet course. This Retro specifically is always adding new equipment and somehow made room for group classes. Good variety of equipment for weightlifters for what you pay for, and in good condition compared to other gyms. The staff has significantly improved since they first opened in 2010, and are very attentive. My one downside is the gym does get cramped when there is a group session going on. Regardless, you'll have no issues finding a bench or cardio machine to work out on in the evening, even if you have to circle around a few times to find parking. Good job, Wall Retro! read more

I just switched gyms - You get what you pay for here. Not enough of a variety of times for classes. I can't get to the gym before 6 due to commuting home from work. The one instructor should not be teaching. Her form for squats. lunges, etc are terrible and can hurt someone that is not familiar with how you are supposed to do those moves. Scary. I have complained SEVERAL times and even sent an email regarding the wipes and paper towels never being filled and also a broken paper towel holder. The best was one one of the men that cleaned the machines (and I say did because I have not seen anyone wiping things down in quite some time) walked waaaaaay into the women's dressing room, past the lockers where people change and took the garbage and there were women in there!!! I almost was about to take my top off. They are lucky I didn't already...really lucky. The front desk acted as if a man walking into that space was totally normal, you know, with potentially undressed women. They said, ohhhh he usually goes in there with a female staff member, I guess someone was not around. Really terrible. Front desk is not friendly - no hellos or goodbyes. Anyway, I found a place 20 dollars more and is WAAAAAAY better. Tons of classes, equipment, etc. So much happier there, wish I switched sooner. Peace out retro. read more

Don't be fooled by the price. There is a registration fee and a yearly [ so called maintenance fee. Plus tax, so it's not $19,99. The place is new and not ever crowded, Will get less and less when they finally go out of business. Poor Management, staff and the least experienced personal trainers I have ever worked with. Just Kids.Booked a for a year and had them not show up, tell me they would not come in when I wanted to, reason, I'm not coming in for 1 person on a Friday morning. Getting Lisa Jackson off her bum to do anything about it, well forget it. She is there just to BS new people signing up. Things have gone from bad to worse at Retro Fitness, Wall. It smells of sweat and equipment and fixtures that haven't been cleaned. They refuse to turn on the air conditioning so the air is always stale and the resulting hot conditions make working out uncomfortable. In addition, they allow weight slamming, and there's a LOT of that. I have asked twice to have a manager call me to discuss this. I've also left notes for the owner. No one called. She told us rudely to get out of the room in 15 mins because they have Classes about to go on but we know we had an hour before the next class will start. The short version of this post is that I will never be returning to this location after how I was verbally attacked by this location's management team. I've been a loyal member of Retro Fitness for approximately 4 years and have utilized numerous facilities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. After recently moving to the area in August, I began frequenting this location due to the convenience. My mother-in-law recently took up an interest in weight training for the first time in an effort to improve her fitness. I am not a personal trainer by any means, but I am in decent shape so when my mother-in-law asked for some advice I was happy to help. She has had shoulder surgery in the past so I offered to work out with her to make sure she wouldn't get injured. We began frequenting the gym together to weight train about 3 weeks ago. Today while we were working out together, the facility manager approached me and asked me to speak with her by the front desk. I obliged and she mentioned that someone had accused me of personal training in the facility, which was against membership rules. I assured her I was only working out with my family and was in no way personal training individuals for profit (nor have I ever). I completely understand how that would be violating the facility's rules and regulations. She told me that was fine and I went back to continue my workout. After finishing our workout, my mother-in-law and I grabbed our things and proceeded to make our way to the main exit. As we walked around the front desk, Alexis, the Fitness Director, hastily walked around the desk to block our exit and said that she needed to speak with me immediately about personal training at the facility. I was blindsided, but assured her that I already spoke with the manger and that I was just working out with a family member. What happened next was one of most unprofessional interactions I've ever experienced. Alexis aggressively began to argue with me and point her finger in my direction while insisting that teaching my mother-in-law anything in their facility was against the rules and needed to immediately be stopped. After assuring her that I was not in fact personal training anyone multiple times, she proceeded to argue and her demeanor became more rude and aggressive. Alexis then mentioned that she has reviewed camera footage with the facility owner that proves I am personal training in the facility. Our "conversation" ended with Alexis threatening to revoke our memberships on the authority of the facility owner. To a lesser extent, Alexis was also rude to my wife in a similar situation a couple of weeks prior to this incident when she accused my wife of doing the same thing with my mother-in-law. I've never felt more disrespected in a public forum before in my life and I am appalled about how I was spoken to. Not only will I not be visiting this location while Alexis is in their employment, but I will also be cancelling my membership. For anyone reading this review, I'd also like to mention that the general condition of the gym and facilities has been subpar at best. It was never bad enough for me to take the time out and write a review, but there are much better facilities and options in the area. If you are considering opening a membership here, I'd recommend you look elsewhere where you will be valued as a customer. read more

I joined this gym because I heard good things and it helped that two friends also worked out at Retro. I signed up for a year after having several surgeries in which I almost didn't make it. I paid for about six months (automated) and also paid for personal training sessions for about four months which unfortunately I was unable to attend since my illness got worse. I contacted the gym and spoke to the manager and she in turn spoke to the owner. They required I provide them a note from my Dr on my condition....So i did and they said they would place my account on hold until I was released to go to the gym. After about three months no call - no letter from gym but I did receive a collection notice for the balance of my membership. This is the service and empathy you receive from this place. I understand that business is business but how thoughtless can you be...I know that many people may not care but it just shows that Retro is not a place I would recommend and I will inform as many people as I can on how I was treated and using social media to get my point across...Being in the business field this is not how you treat customers. read more
