I love this gym! It has everything i need at a very reasonable fee. They also have a stocked fridge with freshly made meals from Coronatos kitchen. This is the worst retro fitness ever and the biggest scam with the worst management and worst communication Ive ever experienced in a gym. I am extremely disappointed in this Retro Fitness as I actually have never even gone to the facility to work out. I signed up one day in the spur of a moment and boy what a mistake. I cancelled my membership with this Retro Fitness on May 21( I have proof of the exact date sent). I followed all proper procedures in sending a letter, signing and dating it. On May 27 I was charged once again, I called and was explained their procedure and that unfortunately I would be charged one last time. So I sucked it up but was assured that they received my letter and I would no longer be charged. Over a month later on June 30th I was once again charged. I called and explained to the front desk that I had followed the procedure sent a letter and that I would like a refund immediately. I was then told my letter was never recieved........It's just very irritating that I have to take the hit for the mismanagement of this facility. After speaking with the receptionist today on July 2, I was advised that I will NOT be getting a refund and that their manager put in a note that the cancellation was done on June 30 which is complete LIE. Join this retro fitness if you wanna get scammed every month because they clearly don't care about their customers. read more

I have been a member of Retro Fitness for about a year. They recently got new treadmills that I don't like so I cancelled my membership. They told me my membership will expire in a few days from then so I started a membership at another gym. I just noticed that Retro billed me for another month. I called them and they said I did not give them seven days notice so I had to pay for another month of membership. If I knew that it was not going to expire in a few days, I would have finished up the month at Retro. Now I have two gym memberships. There is no logical purpose for this policy. Used to love the gym but I was being harassed and threatened here by the same person for months . Even told to ki** myself while walking out of the gym by this person. I've been telling management for months this guy is giving me issues and all they could muster is a "stay away from him". I've talked to other members and it's clear I'm not the only one this patron has made uncomfortable. I don't think a member like this should be allowed at the gym but I guess I'm wrong. Really shameful I have to even write this but there you go. Really sad I had to switch gyms because I was always loyal to this gym and I wanted them to work the issues out so I can continue coming here. I dropped off a cancellation letter at the front desk. It was very busy hours and The clerk NEVER mentioned anything about signing a cancellation agreement. I move to Florida 2 days later. NOW i have collections coming after me and all retro can suggest is i pa the past due amount (to their billing agency because they have NOTHING to do with payment) and corporate tells me I have to go into the the home gym in NJ. Now i have to spend more money on sending THE SAME LETTER CERTIFIED MAIL because I can not physically come and then they will send me a cancellation HOPEFULLY. Decent gym, not too crowded in the mornings and always kept pretty clean. Equipment is completely fine for most people's needs. The weekday morning vibe is so much better since a crew of "selfie filmers" seems to have stopped coming. This location recently changed hands. The place is clean and new ownership are investing in the facility albeit very small and rectifying deferred maintenance on the equipment which is somewhat dated, but serviceable. The front desk staff do greet you, but do not engage, I've been here almost a year now and have dealt with a Matt Trost and gave him honest feedback. I have yet to meet any trainer in the place, no one on staff engages you ever. The most popular piece of equipment they have is an older outdated elliptical that there is only one of in the whole place. Most recently their WiFi no longer works. I've reached out to Matt and basically he told me that he's sorry they're not meeting my expectations and that (I'm paraphrasing now) I can certainly leave. Best advice I think. The only reason to stay is Chris, the facility person, he keeps the place immaculate (as you can in a gym). read more

I didn't give this place five stars b/c I only went for a week. However, the week I was there was a fantastic experience and I don't understand why some reviews are only one or two stars? I was here from Las Vegas to visit my Dad and being the gym I am I needed my "gym fix." My experience at Retro Fitness was nothing but positive! The gym is clean with an adequate amount of fitness machines (for the size of it) and witnessing one of the managers putting weights and bars away showed a sign of passion for this place. I say this b/c ultimately, the responsibility for this should be each individual, but you know that doesn't always happen. The employees there were very courteous and always smiled. The manager was proactive as I always saw her helping the employees out ensuring they were okay. Once again, I don't know why this place has received some bad reviews? I like this Retro Location. It gets packed but never too crowded and this is early saturday/sunday morning during the summer. I have rarely had a problem getting a machine or cardio equipment. You're always greeted when you arrive. Hours are standard. The equiptment is well maintained and they have most of what all of the Retros have inside. The energy in this gym is good. Not too intimidating, but definitely filled with people who love to workout. read more

This gym is perfect literally. The layout is very smooth. Equipment is fresh and up to date with today's workout standards. I used to go to planet on Fischer but this place is so much better and worth the extra 10 a month. Not only am I going to a cleaner nice gym, but my membership includes classes. Basic membership includes the luxurious upgraded membership. I haven't been to any but I plan on doing some yoga that my body desperately needs when summer hits. The manager Glen fails to return phone calls. Follow through with what he sais and when you confront him on it. He screams derogatory comments at you and threatens to beat you up. It took me 4 days to get a return phone call and I was only trying to sign up 40 members to the gym he manages. This gym is fine for the facilities and cost. However, the people that work there and the policies there are pretty bad. They charged during a global pandemic, and you're not able to cancel a membership easily. Whoever owns this gym has intentionally made it annoying to cancel, especially if you moved away. Cancelling should be as easy as a call or a cancellation online. They require a certified mail letter to be sent in to cancel the membership. They will not be accommodative during a period where the unemployment is extremely high and people are afraid to leave their homes. They even said there is NOT a global pandemic going on because NJ opened up certain facilities. They probably have taken all the govt support and continue to treat their clients poorly. read more

I joined the Retro Fitness 9/30/20 they did not show me how to work any of the equipment on top of that the machines were not cleaned well at all , I would clean machine before and after I used them. I use to go to planet fitness they are very clean and show you around plus they are half the price Retro Fitness charged double the price also took out fees that I wasn't aware of,in three months I was charged additional 160.00 from my credit card without my knowledge or my constant for the following year. Do not go here post COVID-19 if you want to feel safe. Chris the cleaning guy is amazing and always cleans the equipment yet the rest of the staff is incompetent. I have made SO MANY complaints about the staff not enforcing the mask rule and nothing is ever done. I have seen managers and personal trainers talk to people with no masks on without asking them to put it on. The manager sits in her office with no mask on with the door open, how do you expect to enforce your members to do it if you don't do it yourself? As a cancer survivor with a bad immune system, I want to feel Safe when I go to the gym. THIS PLACE IS NOT IT. I've express my concerns so many times with nothing done, this place deserves to be SHUT DOWN by not following state guidelines. I consider reporting them to the Better Business Bureau after documenting my experiences. If you want to go to a gym and not wear a mask, join here! I'm a new member. I like the gym. Everyone is very friendly. I joined because they are the only gym around with child care right now. I cannot bring my newborn (babies must be 6 months old) but have been taking my 3 year old, and he loves it. However, 3 days after I joined and started bringing my son they posted notice that they are doing away with most of the child care hours. Super disappointing. I will only be able to work out on Monday and Wednesday. Going to take me a long time to lose the baby weight :( read more

I'm sure this GYM is clean and useful to most. But My son signed up last summer and just never had the chance to go back after his first visit. I called to cancel and was convinced to put a hold on the account for 3 months. So of course I did. Meanwhile in August the "annual Fee " hit of like $50. My son went in to the location to cancel the membership the end of January and was told that the manager wasn't in so he couldn't cancel it. Now he went in again cause of course we are still being charged every month and again he was told that the manager isn't in so he can not cancel. I just called the location my self and they tell me that "my contract" says I have to pay for a certified letter to request cancellation. And said that they can not tell me when the manager will be in so I can come then to cancel the membership. I barely get one day off a week and I have to play nonsense games with these people. NOT HAPPY!!!!!. I've paid almost a years worth of membership fees plus and annual fee and have only been to the place one time. And you can't just cancel the membership when we make time to stop into the store like we did when we signed up. Some racket they have. read more

In the hat world does someone working at a gym stuff pizza in their mouth at the front counter. This is the face of your business? This isn't my "home" gym as I usually go to Piscataway location but during the summer time, I will go here on weekends. It can be pretty busy on the weekend mornings but never over crowded. It's always pretty clean and if you've been to newer retros, they are using cheap made in China equipment. This location however has life fitness and Hammer strength equipment. It's in a shopping center so if your not careful, you will drive right past it. read more

First and foremost, I'm a retro member. I went to Retro in Toms River with my son and asked for a free pass, I was denied. A women (member) standing behind me said that's ridiculous, wait here. She went out to her car and returned with a 7 day guest pass. The young lady behind the counter I believe her name was (Reilly) said you can't use that either because you don't live in Toms River. I was honestly embarrassed. Her response first was we are independently owned and can do what ever we want. Her next response was we are corporate sir and I'm just following corporate policy. Well which one is it? This is not good business. Purchasing a house here and will not sign my family up here. After speaking to many people yesterday and sharing my story, it's obvious to me that this Retro is notorious for being rude to people who don't live in Toms River. Independently owned or not, Retro Fitness Corporate should have better standards. Very disappointed with this first time experience at a Retro location. The other reviewers are right: it is a HASSLE to cancel your gym membership. This is a gym that is totally unprofessional, unethical, and simply not that great when it comes to group fitness classes. The management doesn't care for the gym members or its employees. I wish yelp allowed me to leave zero stars. I signed up for this gym close to three years ago. 3 months after signing my contract I moved out of state. Needless to say, I have been trying to cancel ever since. They make this task IMPOSSIBLE. Even when I thought it was over and I had paid out an ENTIRE two year contract, they took it upon themselves to auto-renew my contract. The staff is extremely unhelpful and do not care. When I told them I would cancel my credit card they threatened that they would put my account into collections and charge 50% penalty fees on all declined payments. Finally after notaries, letters, and signed cancelled contracts, all sent certified mail, they have finally accepted that I will be leaving their gym. They also said they are being generous and only charging me for 1 additional month instead of the standard 60 days. I joined this gym about thee years ago. I signed up for a year, but I was allowed to continue my membership as long as I wanted to stay a member. Last year due to health issues I was not going any more so I called and said I wanted to no longer belong and what did I need to do to end my membership. They convinced me to just freeze my membership to see if I wanted to try coming back but during that time I would not have to pay. Well I wound up getting charged anyway. So I told them I just wanted to end my membership. I needed to sent a certified letter to them stating I no longer wanted to belong with a check. I sent a check for the amount required which they cashed and the certified letter was delivered. Well since than their billing agency keeps writing and calling me telling me how I owe money and they keep adding more months. I explained to them and they said they tried contacting this retro fitness , but they do not respond to them. I have tried contacting retro about this problem at least 6 times and I have contacted the billing company at least 3 times by phone and 3 times by email. But they refuse to stop harassing me. The only reason they have not gotten any money from me is because I no longer have the credit card they have on file. I do not need to keep being harassed nor do I need this showing up on my credit report. They even charged my card which I changed because they charged a head of time and I lost that money. Their billing agency is trying to charge me for months I was no longer a member along with upcoming months. plus they are trying to charge me late fees and penalties. management will not respond. the only time they will contact you or talk to you is when they can get your money. If you are thinking of joining do yourself a favor and find another gym. I have already reported the to the Better Business Bureau and since doing that I see that they have had numerous complaints for the same problem. I should have checked before I joined. read more
