Stopped in for the first time this week with my husband for power flow with Paul, and we had a really nice experience. This is a donation based studio with a recommended donation of 10$ to keep up with their expenses. You sign in at the front, put your donation in the box, and head to the air conditioned studio with mats, blocks, and blankets available to you. Our instructor greeted us right away with a smile. The class itself was good intensity for power flow, and the music was contemporary, upbeat, and matched the energy of the class. Definitely check out power flow Tuesday's at 7pm with Paul. read more

I've only been to two classes at Rubber Soul, but I loved the place long before stepping inside its doors. First off, it gets points for being right down the train tracks from my house. (Yes, I live within 100 feet of train tracks. Yes, the train goes by often. No, it does not wake me up at night.) Rubber Soul is tucked away in the pretty yet unassuming Leathers Building, which is on Pulaski Street right before you get to the tracks. Rubber Soul has a small door marked with a stand-up metal YOGA sign; their front door always has that month's class schedule posted for the taking. Rubber Soul is a donations-based yoga center. A $3-5 donation per class attended is suggested but not monitored or required. (Not monitored as in they don't watch each person enter to see if they're paying or not.) I paid $5 my first time but only $2 today. You can go for free if you can't afford to donate, and they won't hate you for it. The classes are all taught by volunteer teachers who really believe that yoga can help you physically and spiritually. Thus far, no one I've encountered over there is overly preachy, so that's nice. The space is small but comfortable. Yoga mats can be rented for a $1 donation; bottles of water cost the same. Yoga bricks (?) and blankets are yours for the taking during class. I went to Laughing Club there a few months back with some friends. A fun and strange experience in which we spent an hour making weird noises, movements, and giggles. You should try it, especially if the idea freaks you out. Today I went to Gentle Yoga and loved it. Even the gentle class was a little workout for this novice! I love that this place is a non-profit. I love how involved they are with the community. I love the cozy space that doesn't waste resources. I love and don't love that the schedule changes month to month. Let me first be honest- I live in Atlanta and I love my snobby intense hot yoga. However, this studio is simple and small and lovely. It's donation based and wonderful. It is a bit cluttered and eclectic but that's what it's going for and it does it well. My instructor, Meg, was lovely and gentle. She was helpful and informative. I would certainly go back for the purpose of a restorative yoga experience. read more

Great studio that is only $5 per class with the option to give more if you can. I love the unique space and feel 10x calmer from the moment I enter the room. It is challenging enough but teachers are very careful. I'm an experienced practitioner and I've never done anything at RS that I thought could lead to injury. read more

Rubber Soul deserves all the stars in the sky! Come to a few classes and I guarantee you'll agree. Yoga here is more affordable than anywhere else in the Athens and metro ATL areas - only $5/class! A yoga class IS the greatest $5 investment you could possibly make. Students and those with modest incomes should be flocking to Rubber Soul at mention of this. The owner, Cal, is a very caring and involved person in the community. He keeps rates super low so yoga is accessible to EVERYONE. Yoga is therapy. If you are struggling with mental health, you cannot possibly find a better value than taking a yoga class here. After your first savasana, you'll be hooked. Unconditional love and wisdom radiate from the kind people who have volunteered to teach at this studio. Sydney, Evan, Chanda and Julie are some of the most loving people I've had the pleasure to know! From the moment I first stepped foot into Rubber Soul, I have transformed not only in my yoga practice but as a human being. Rubber Soul is a special, magical place for total healing. If I could give this place a million stars I would! There is not another place that is like Rubber Soul; it is more than just a yoga studio. It is a place for community, love to be given and received, story telling, clowning around, and expressing ourselves in whatever way that suites us! My most meaningful friendships have stemmed from bonding with other RS students and are the relationships that have gotten me through to where I am today. On top of all of that, the ASANA (physical poses of yoga) aspect is the cherry on top. Come here to experience bliss! read more

Rubber Soul is awesome! I've looked into other yoga places and tried to find something like it since moving out of Athens but it's hard to beat. First off, they only ask for a five dollar donation for each class, and considering I haven't seen many other yoga places that charge less than fifteen per class it's especially good. But you also get a lot for the money (should you choose to donate). It's an hour and half and considering the first time I went I hadn't done yoga for a while, I was definitely sore the next day because it really works you out. This is the coolest place to visit while you're in Athens. It's an entirely donation based model with teachers that range all sorts of interests. It can be a little heavy on the community-building if you're a northern asshole like I am but it wears you down after a while and you feel all Namaste. Warning: these classes start on time and once they start you can't get in the door, so be 5 minutes early. Also, it's donation based. So if the class is crowded and there are still people coming in, then you know what? Make more room! If you have to practice yoga with your foot in someone's face, well, what's more yoga than that? read more

After a long time, I found a yoga place that has the right mix for me. I have been looking for a place like this for a few months now. I have been to Rubber Soul for two classes till now and I am hooked already. The two instructors, Kate and Nick, whose sessions I have gone to so far, are awesome. It is a donation based yoga center which is rare to find. It is neat and clean and very organized. Once you enter the studio, you just feel good. Somehow, they have managed to create an environment which oozes of positive energy. I have attended yoga classes at another place not in Athens but in Atlanta but it was not like this at all. This is completely different. After only two sessions, I have found a peaceful feeling within me that I had been looking for quite some time and wasn't able to find. Finally, I am getting close to it. If you don't have money to donate, they will not throw you out. All the instructors are volunteers. They have mats and bricks and extra things to work with and don't charge you for those. Try it...it is one the best out there. read more

Rubber Soul is such an amazing gift to the universe. I've been to maybe 5 classes (and the optional donation, with no mandetory guilt or even any way for anyone to know if you donated or not, is a breath of, well, a yoga breath..). Three teachers I've experienced are all lovely, with widely divergent styles- there is an instructor here for you- and the universe as it is will have he or she teaching when you have a bit of time off. The space is small but not cramped- great air circulation- and there are the most beautiful tapestries and nooks. Everything you need to get started is there (great space, great teachers, mats, water, etc) except for you- and haven't you been hoping to start doing yoga? The website reflects the dynamicism of the place... changing schedules, cool lectures, pot luck meals, Zazen. I've just moved here from San Francisco (a student of Carl at Yoga Tree) and I needed this place. read more

I can't believe this place is run on donations and volunteers! It's incredible. Wonderful space, very comfortable. I had a class with Cal called Gentle Yoga and it was such a great experience. I've been to a number of yoga classes and this was one of the best. He used a lot of props I don't usually use and it made for some new positions I'd never tried.
