We spent more than a year planning our August wedding and communicating with the Bed & Breakfast owners our specific schedule, needs for lodging and duration. When it came time to make our payments they were takers, when our guests began arriving and our planned events began unfolding they were not at all the hosts they advertise. Frankie and Pierre were had not prepared, the spaces were not what they advertised or agreed to provided. Our guests' repeated requests for minimal supplies such as towels, sets of clean/usable dish ware, basic kitchen appliance and in working order, locking room doors were met with either hostility, ignoring or passive aggressive behaviors such as grunting and barging into private rented rooms more than once, and personal kitchen use during one of our contracted events. The lodging in all buildings smelled of mold, and the rugs, blankets were covered in pet hair. The main lodge refrigerator was broken, and guests found two drawers full of ice. No one in our party was notified of the broken main appliance. The Lodge kitchen - one of the two we contracted to rent - had overflowing garbage with maggots when we arrived to use it and so much clutter our caterers could not put their feet under the counters to work. The electrical outlets and lighting did not work consistently in the dining hall and we had to rig up extension cords. We have repeatedly requested a refund to cover our costs to guests, explaining the problems in detail at the time and as a follow up. Millstone Hills' response has been to blame us, deny expectations in our contract and ignore all contact. We received a $148.00 check for "overages" which we never incurred in response to our request for $700.00 to reimburse our guests. I could list more issues. I do not recommend Millstone Hill under the current ownership and management to future guests, at all.

It breaks my heart to write reviews like this one. Why? Because you need revenue to invest in your…read morebusiness. Bad reviews impact revenue. Yet, the whole reason to write a review is to give others a recommendation or a warning BEFORE they visit. There are things the innkeepers cannot control- the rough surroundings, the noise of traffic and barking dogs, etc. (we had it all) But, once you cross the threshold, that's on the innkeeper. The potential to make Maplecroft a little oasis in a run down area of Barre VT is there. But you can't host on potential. Here is why it doesn't hit the mark: the building is just so neglected and our room was filthy. The housekeeper needs a solid talking to. The filth in our room is not just that someone forgot to vacuum. It's stained carpets and soiled area rugs and caked on dirt and pubic hair and filth on chair rails in the bathroom area. The shower: hair on the walls and a horrible smell. On and on. The bed was comfortable but I was so preoccupied with the filth that I kept wondering when the last time was that someone had washed the blankets. They were faded and had an off smell. The towels were stained and dingy. Peeling paint, open walls with rot in the hallway, thick dust covered ceiling fan, dust covered almost everything. Ouf. All this for 200$/night. We were just so disappointed. This was an anniversary get away and we couldn't wait to get away... from the Elia Corti room at Maplecroft. We have stayed in many many MANY B&Bs over the years on remote islands to bustling tourist zones. We expect old inns to have doors that aren't plumb and funky floor plans. All part of the fun. But the caked on dirt and general filth was a big turn off. Our clothing carried that smell all the way to home. On the plus side: all of this is fixable with a basic carpet shampooer and bucket of hot soapy water and scrub brushes. Replace the towels and wash the windows. Low cost but high impact. Then get some repair work going on the crumbling walls that are cracked open and exposing rot. Your guests shouldn't be exposed to these things. Lots of neglected little things make for one BIG thing- a negative experience. We will not be returning.

Very Disappointing Experience - Would Not Return…read more Our first night at the Stone Hill Inn in Stowe was fine. The room was clean, well-appointed, and we had no issues initially. However, the experience declined quickly. Breakfast was mediocre at best. The omelet was bland, and the oatmeal felt like an afterthought -- disappointing given that breakfast is part of what you're paying for at an inn like this. The second night was where things truly went wrong. There was no hot water. We specifically booked this inn for the jacuzzi tub after a long hike, which was the main reason for choosing this property. Instead, we had to check hourly to see if hot water returned, never did, and ultimately went to bed dirty from hiking with no ability to shower. The following morning, the situation escalated unnecessarily. The innkeeper confronted me and aggressively asked me to step into the kitchen, accusing us of breaking a toilet and shattering porcelain on the ground. I was shocked and told him I had no idea what he was referring to because we did not damage anything. I asked for a moment to understand what he was talking about and was told, angrily, that I had "one minute." I declined breakfast that morning -- which was unfortunate since that's one of the supposed highlights of staying here -- and asked if he would like to inspect the room before we left. He refused. I even offered for him to look at the bathroom to see how it would have been impossible for us to damage the toilet, and again he declined. Importantly, we had tipped the innkeeper who cleaned the room, who reportedly found the alleged damage and cleaned it up -- yet noted nothing to us and showed no concern at the time. The belligerent and accusatory behavior of the innkeeper completely overshadowed any positives from the stay. This is not how paying guests -- especially those booking for a romantic getaway, honeymoon, or special occasion -- should ever be treated. We will never return, and I strongly caution anyone considering this inn, particularly if you are looking for a peaceful, romantic experience.

We had also wanted to rewnew our vows and hoped to use a room in the Inn. We knew there would be an added fee (and would have gladly paid) for the use of the room but never expected the unprofessional behavior from the owners! They wanted to plan the event or we had to have it elsewhere. Not considering the fact that our anniv is in the winter, "why not have it outside". ‍ In our talks and emails I was reminded upmteen times "we are a business". (duh)! When I cancelled our res (5 mos out) they wanted to fine us. And called our officiant and yelled at her! Someone needs to teach them Hospitality 101. To be fair, we never ended up staying there. The lack of their knowledge of what a Guest is, kept us away.

We arrived just in time to catch the sunset from the patio as well as some deers. We stayed in the Mountain View Queen that even though the bathroom is not inside the room itself, we still had a private bath right next door. Breakfast started with a yogurt parfait, followed by French Toast and bacon with delicious local Morse Farm syrup that I loved so much, I went to pick up some to bring home. After just one night, I already felt at home that before leaving, I checked out the other two options and fell in love with the Mountain View King for next time.

The owner apologized a few hours before our arrival for some boxes that were on the outside porch due to renovations. This did not begin to prepare us for the state of the home. Stuff was all over the hallways, our room was incredibly dusty, windows were filthy, and there were ladybugs all over. The owner tried telling us they are all over VT inns at this time of year. This is simply not the case. To pay $442 for one night was highway robbery. If we could have found another place to stay on short notice, we would have. There wasn't even a key to lock our room. We left as soon as possible before breakfast.

When we were there in the fall the llama was just wandering around the yard as it had been fighting with the ram, so Jay just let it out to get a little breathing room. So I woke up in the morning and watched the llama on patrol around the house. Jay and Jude, like so many B & B owners (a special breed) are friendly and entertaining. I went to bed each night excited to wake up and smell whatever was cooking. None of the rooms have a private bath, but renting the whole space makes that happen. No cellular phone service (well sometimes one bar) but good wifi. Close to hiking, X country skiing, and snowmobile trails. Close to Montpelier. A couple of really nice restaurants in the area: Claire's, Positive Pie, Rainbow Sweets.
