It breaks my heart to write reviews like this one. Why? Because you need revenue to invest in your…read morebusiness. Bad reviews impact revenue. Yet, the whole reason to write a review is to give others a recommendation or a warning BEFORE they visit. There are things the innkeepers cannot control- the rough surroundings, the noise of traffic and barking dogs, etc. (we had it all) But, once you cross the threshold, that's on the innkeeper. The potential to make Maplecroft a little oasis in a run down area of Barre VT is there. But you can't host on potential. Here is why it doesn't hit the mark: the building is just so neglected and our room was filthy. The housekeeper needs a solid talking to. The filth in our room is not just that someone forgot to vacuum. It's stained carpets and soiled area rugs and caked on dirt and pubic hair and filth on chair rails in the bathroom area. The shower: hair on the walls and a horrible smell. On and on. The bed was comfortable but I was so preoccupied with the filth that I kept wondering when the last time was that someone had washed the blankets. They were faded and had an off smell. The towels were stained and dingy. Peeling paint, open walls with rot in the hallway, thick dust covered ceiling fan, dust covered almost everything. Ouf. All this for 200$/night. We were just so disappointed. This was an anniversary get away and we couldn't wait to get away... from the Elia Corti room at Maplecroft. We have stayed in many many MANY B&Bs over the years on remote islands to bustling tourist zones. We expect old inns to have doors that aren't plumb and funky floor plans. All part of the fun. But the caked on dirt and general filth was a big turn off. Our clothing carried that smell all the way to home. On the plus side: all of this is fixable with a basic carpet shampooer and bucket of hot soapy water and scrub brushes. Replace the towels and wash the windows. Low cost but high impact. Then get some repair work going on the crumbling walls that are cracked open and exposing rot. Your guests shouldn't be exposed to these things. Lots of neglected little things make for one BIG thing- a negative experience. We will not be returning.

Noticed some holes in the wall, and picture that stored in one of the drawers, and a paperclip in one of the safety lights. If you are looking for a real Vermont experience, The Moose Meadow Lodge is a great start to the journey. This beautiful home with cabin vibes has brilliant decor and character throughout the property. The amenities are far beyond what you'll find listed, thanks to the selfless owners, Greg and Willie. At the very least, you'll have a very comfortable stay. Greg and Willie will go above and beyond to make sure your overall visit to Vermont is worthwhile. We decided to travel to Vermont last minute for New Year's Eve. We booked the Moose Meadow Lodge on the drive up. We were welcomed with open arms. Greg showed us around the property, the lobby shop, brought us to our room and explained all the unique and exciting details of the house and property. We woke up each morning to a beautifully prepared breakfast. Since our trip was so last minute, we didn't have much of a plan. Greg was kind enough to sit down with us and help us map out our entire journey. He even helped us map an alternate route home that was more scenic. We didn't get to everything on the list, but everything he mentioned was perfect. You can tell he has a genuine love and passion for what he does. His advice and planning alone made the experience excellent. I can go on and on about the perfect stay we had. You can tell Greg and Willie are very passionate about what they do. You will never experience this kind of attention and care at a hotel. We are already planning our next stay here.

We arrived just in time to catch the sunset from the patio as well as some deers. We stayed in the Mountain View Queen that even though the bathroom is not inside the room itself, we still had a private bath right next door. With only one other room on that floor, we rarely ran into the other guests, until breakfast. Breakfast started with a yogurt parfait, followed by French Toast and bacon with delicious local Morse Farm syrup that I loved so much, I went to pick up some to bring home. After just one night, I already felt at home that before leaving, I checked out the other two options and fell in love with the Mountain View King for next time.

The owner apologized a few hours before our arrival for some boxes that were on the outside porch due to renovations. This did not begin to prepare us for the state of the home. Stuff was all over the hallways, our room was incredibly dusty, windows were filthy, and there were ladybugs all over. The owner tried telling us they are all over VT inns at this time of year. This is simply not the case. To pay $442 for one night was highway robbery. If we could have found another place to stay on short notice, we would have. There wasn't even a key to lock our room. We left as soon as possible before breakfast.

Jude and I saw a deer one morning from the breakfast room. The old red barn juxtaposed with a solar panel nearby is pure Vermont. All rooms are up a narrow center staircase with a full bath in the hall. They have a spa bath on the first floor that is pictured here in Photos. A large tiled accessible shower, jetted tub, tall windows which can be opened and ample towels and supplies. I enjoyed it so much that I booked the entire B & B suite for a weekend to come back with the family. The suite is three bedrooms and very affordable for a weekend get-a-way. The back wing of this old farmhouse is half cozy living room/kitchen and half modernized greenhouse. Downstairs in the updated section is a wonderful bathroom with large jacuzzi tub and walk in shower with three (yes, 3) shower heads - though the switching valve only let's you run two at a time. Plus the radiant floor tiles makes me want to just lie in the sun along with Phoenix the resident friendly cat. Upstairs are three cozy bedrooms with wonderful Vermont landscape views and lot's of books for browsing. Outside there are pastures and trails, a big old barn, sheep and a llama. When we were there in the fall the llama was just wandering around the yard as it had been fighting with the ram, so Jay just let it out to get a little breathing room. So I woke up in the morning and watched the llama on patrol around the house. Jay and Jude, like so many B & B owners (a special breed) are friendly and entertaining. They are anxious to be helpful and quick to recommend good restaurants, places to hike, and other things to do. And the breakfasts, ahh, the breakfasts... You have to stay at least two nights just so that you can get more of their good food. fresh fruit cup, maple smoked bacon, maple walnut scones, asparagus soufflé, baked apples with maple syrup, blueberry muffins, light and fluffy waffles ... I went to bed each night excited to wake up and smell whatever was cooking. None of the rooms have a private bath, but renting the whole space makes that happen. No cellular phone service (well sometimes one bar) but good wifi. Close to hiking, X country skiing, and snowmobile trails. Close to Montpelier. A couple of really nice restaurants in the area: Claire's, Positive Pie, Rainbow Sweets.

We especially liked the wood-fired pizza, and the lemon brownies were great too. They also were very accommodating to our 8-year old daughter's picky tastes. I also liked how the salad veggies were picked from the garden in the back of the lodge. 2. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. I have to give a shout out to all the ones we met: Tiffany and Chris (innkeepers), Kate and Nan (working mornings and breakfast), and Adam (dinner shift). They were all so kind and thoughtful, and they really made us feel at home. 3. The grounds were peaceful and beautiful, and the pond was really quite a sight to behold. We enjoyed getting out on the rowboat, and the trails around the Lodge were awesome for nature watching. The remoteness of the Lodge was unique to us, since we're from overcrowed Florida. 4. The proximity to other state parks in Groton State Forest was nice, and we especially enjoyed swimming at Boulder Beach. The town of Groton was charming too, and the ice cream and mead tasting at Arteseno was well worth a stop. 5. Our room was very cozy and comfortable, and it was nice to sleep with the windows open in the summer (did I mention we live in Florida?). We also really enjoyed the common area, and were able to keep in touch with outside world with their free wi-fi, which worked very well. The board games and books in the common room kept our daughter busy too. 5. Finally, the other guests we met at the Lodge were very nice, and we felt enriched by meeting them. Mike, Jackie, Josie, and Langston were very charming, and it was nice too to meet Florian, visiting all the way from Germany. The only weird thing about Seyon is why it was relatively empty the week we were there, but I guess it's still way off the beaten path and still being discovered. But you really should check it out and enjoy it like we did. I hope to go back again soon.

All the rooms have their own bathrooms and are very nicely appointed. It's a great place for kids. When we were there, they had 2 golden retrievers, -mom and puppy-, several barn kittens and plenty of chickens that lay eggs where ever they feel like-so the kids had fun hunting them down. You are also 'allowed' to help with the 6 am or 5 pm 'chores' which involve feeding the pigs (btw they don't really smell like pigs can smell... a testament to the Light's keeping their environment clean) as well as helping milk their 6 doe-eyed Jersey milk cows...plus whatever else Farmer Bob can think of for you to do. If you're there on Monday you can say goodbye to pigs that are off on a 'field trip'... to come back later, in a, shall we say, different form. Highly recommended as a learning experience or just a nice time to relax. You'll probably want to turn in early though... they do have roosters.
