Honestly the more often I am seen here the more I love it…read more I recently was suffering from a bronchial flu. Like a hideous combo of bronchitis and the flu. I had been in bed for two days and was due back at work but knew I couldn't make it thru an hour of it so I drove to the hospital. It's early afternoon on a Thursday and they had a 3 hour wait in the ER. Well I was absolutely too sick to sit in a waiting room for 3 hours- and that's just to get to step one. So I got back in my car and called Maine Med family practice and found out that they do have urgent care so I could be seen that day at a designated time just by a different doctor- but one with my records on hand. So much better . Seriously unless it's 3am and I'm in an accident I would ALWAYS prefer to just use my urgent care!! So today I had my physical. I received 3 vaccinations and was totally happy to realize the importance of having a regular doctor at a decent hospital. Going over the paperwork they gave me while there I realized that in the last few months they had amassed my entire medical history. I lived seeing shots I received in 1988. I don't have to remember that my Tetanus was due this year. They reminded me. Maybe it cuz I'm from a big city in California but insurance for me there always meant ER visits or clinic visits. Never this personalized care. They called me to set up the appt for my yearly physical. I didn't have to remember. Gotta love that. One less thing on the calendar to set reminders for.

Everyone who spoke to me was so friendly and patient, and I never felt judged or anything for asking questions that might seem dumb to others. I am autistic and it was very refreshing that they did not bother me or ask about my stimming. Overall, it was a very good experience, and recovery is going well!

**My colonoscopy procedure was at State Street not Fore River.**…read more I was very anxious for the procedure and they made me feel very safe and comfortable. There was no wait at all. The preregistration process over the phone was easy, although I did have to go through part of it twice with different people. Catherine McCann and the rest of the department were very nice and professional. **the rest of this is specific to my experience as a trans woman** My PCP had said that there was some difference, if only minor, in the procedure related to being trans and having a different anatomy than a cis woman, so that would be indicated in the referral. However, the nurse asked if there was any chance I was pregnant. I laughed and said no, and then said, "you know I'm trans, right?" She said no. I said, "I mean that was cool and all. I thought it would be in the records. Anyway I don't know if it makes a difference." So at that point I figured it either didn't matter (it might not have, my PCP turned out to be wrong about a couple other things too) or that the nurse would tell whomever needed to know. I really don't know which happened, but everyone was very nice and it never felt weird or awkward. Of course I was sedated for most of it, but otherwise I felt supported. There's an "F" on my paperwork and the hospital bracelet. (Name was not a factor as I have had a legal name change, so they wouldn't have known any other name to use)

I am a retired RN and thought I was familiar with the ins and outs of medical care for Seniors…read more After decades of being a patient of this practice and years of being seen by a Nurse Practitioner I really liked, I was "assigned" to Dr. Ko when the NP retired. My 1st annual visit with Dr. Ko was rushed from start to finish. I'm not sure it even lasted 5 minutes. Each concern I brought up was essentially dismissed as "sun damage". Since I have been treated for skin cancer in the past, this was concerning to me. After writing to the practice manager to complain and request to be switched to another practitioner, she phoned me and I was told "internal provider transfers were not allowed" at this time. I am stunned by this apparent policy! When I explained that I now need to be seen for a spot on my shoulder Dr. Ko "dismissed" but is worsening and I feel needs to be reevaluated, the practice manager informed me I had to be seen by Dr. Ko or not be seen at all. I told her that didn't work for me so now I'm searching for another dermatologist. My advice: stay away from this practice.

This place is a nightmare…read more I went in because I was having PTSD flashbacks. They misdiagnosed me as schizophrenic, put me on horrible medications that made it so that I was unable to pee, and forced a court order to make me take the medications. This has done permanent damage to my bladder. They say the average stay is 7-10 days, but regularly hold patients for multiple months at a whim. I was bullied by multiple patients, some of whom fought in the hallways or destroyed on-site property. The doctors were quick to impose their own political beliefs on me in order to discredit how I felt about the situation. Some nurses were sympathetic, others openly made fun of patients or pushed strange personal beliefs. Several nurses openly described to me that "the system is broken." When my parents brought things in to cheer me up (prayer beads, art supplies) they were denied randomly. I was taken off medication without being notified or having anyone to consult. Therapy was non-existent, except for group therapy, which was very repetitive and inadequate CBT. We were only allowed outside once a day, where I was harassed by other patients. The only "correctional" value this place has is scaring patients enough into behaving, because of the torturous threat of returning to a place like this.

I was informed to send a referral from my GP. Done. Called again for an appointment; diverted to scheduling. I could only leave a message for someone from scheduling (Robin) to call me back; left my number. Called back 4 hours later after no call back to check on setting the appointment. I was then told scheduling had 3 to 5 working days to call me back -- their normal procedure. In all my years of phoning medical facilities -- hospitals, dentists, clinics, anything -- this was a first; 3 to 5 work days just to be able to set up an appointment date. Ludicrous.
