A few patients have been near death because of the disorganization of this center. It is THAT badly run. I was referred to this practice by my GP who had a particular physician in mind but knew they would…read morehave a full schedule and to not expect an appointment with that physician. The first open appointment was with a PA which I was given. The office is accessed from the back of the building on the lower level. There is plenty of parking in this area. Once in the back door, the office is straight ahead. The staff all seem very busy. The were pleasant enough but also not chatty. Slide open the window, take my information, told to wait. Window closes. Pretty standard. I was the only one in the waiting area so I wandered around a looked at some of the information they had available on skin care treatments offered. Almost spa-like services. The reception/waiting area is very bare bones with no windows and hard seats. It took several minutes to be called back where I was placed in an exam room. The tech who brought me to the exam room verified why I was being seen. I expressed my concerns. She seemed very pleasant and left. I waited in that room quite a while. I could hear someone coming and going in the hall so one provider must have been going from room to room. When it was my turn the PA arrived with the tech. He greeted me, verified why I was there and then began speaking to the tech like I wasn't in the room. He sat on a stool, took out a magnifying glass and started looking over my face. Not at something I was there for, just all over my face. While doing this he is rattling off technical words to the tech who was writing everything down as he said it. Apparently he believes I have rosacea. For which he did not offer to treat me. Weird. If you catch that early it's treatable. He wasn't even sure at first it is rosacea and after dictating to the tech for a while changed his diagnosis to 'just make down rosacea' but then no treatment plan was offered. Once done with that he stood up asked what skin care I used and offered a cream for a secondary issue I was there for. My primary issue is a concern for skin cancer. He completely ignored that. I pointed it out. He ignored it again. I pointed it out again. He side stepped. I insisted he address it and he described how 'sometimes' a condition will occur and then described to me a pre-cancerous condition that is exactly what I had described to him at the beginning. He didn't tell me he didn't think it was an issue or he thinks it's something else or address the spot on my face in any way at all. He just kept avoiding the discussion until I forced the issue. I felt so uncomfortable with the experience after a few days I called the office and spoke to someone about my concerns. They assured me the treatment was the usual method and they would speak to the PA and get back to me. They never called me back, but the PA called and left me a voice message saying if I didn't understand the treatment to call him back. I do understand the treatment. I just want to know what is being done to improve this practitioners ability to treat patients. To respect their concerns. To communicate better. He treated me like a bug under a microscope then tried to walk out of the room as soon as his examination was complete. He was literally backing toward the door as he tried to end the appointment before I had gotten answers. I never received a call back from the person I spoke with and at this point I have lost all confidence in this group. On top of that, my insurance denied the claim. Great.

He was quietly professional, and appeared to provide a thorough examination. He biopsied one area, which was later confirmed as a squamous cell. I am also regularly seen at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. My Nurse Practitioner there saw me only 60 days after my examination by Dr. Kimmis. She biopsied 3 additional and separate areas, all of which were confirmed as skin cancer - - 1 basal cell and 2 more squamous cell. Upon calling Dr. Kimmis to report this development and express my surprise and disappointment that he had not identified these additional cancers, his sole response was: "Thanks for telling me."

We still have an appointment but we didn't know that because our friend suggested we just come down and then what happened was she filled out all the paperwork and stuff for us so that we were able to apply right away and not have to wait. You should hear something soon but she was just amazing. I believe her name was Liz, but she was just out of this world. She was in the VBA office in the basement, but that did not take away from her ability to do things and to get stuff moving in the right direction for him. Looking forward to hearing back from them.

My SO comes here for both service related injury and regular health care. His service related care…read moreis covered at no cost. Things like prescriptions for non-service related needs are billed to his health insurance which have a copay and/or coinsurance. The VA does have a difficult time getting and keeping qualified physicians. He has been assigned a few PCP's over the years and he has requested a change in PCP in the past, which has been done for him. The staff here are pretty laid back in their patient facing interactions. Appointments often run behind schedule, so be sure to 'check-in' with the appropriate people and do ask questions. At our last appointment we had to 'take a number' which wasn't communicated in any way (phone call when making appointment, paperwork, a sign in department) so maybe ask for clarification (just sit down?) even when it doesn't appear clarification is needed. There are also a number of volunteers who can assist you or point you in the right direction. This facility has many on-site services such as lab, pharmacy, EKG, X-ray and so on. Other services are offered at satellite locations throughout the state. They have an urgent visit office on site, open during regular business hours. Outside regular business hours, if you need urgent treatment, call their after hours line to find out what facility is covered by the VA and located near you. We did this once while traveling in PA and were directed to Pittsburgh. As that was about as far away from us as home, we opted to cut our trip short and drive home to use the VA. Not always a convenient option, but if you use the in-network facilities you won't get an unexpected bill. Which is good to know. A new parking structure has been built near the hospital helping to relieve parking issues. The drive up entrance is handicapped accessible and there seem to be a few parking spots in this area as well. Just inside the entrance is a staffed information desk, If you need assistance or directions, stop here. The lobby is a sunny area with a few seats available if you are waiting for a patient or for a patient to wait while you get the car. Many patients are older and use walkers or canes. The halls can be a bit dark, but many are wide and signs overhead give an idea of which corridor will lead to your desired destination. There are vending machines around, usually near waiting areas and public restrooms scattered throughout. Last visit there was a little shop set up near a waiting area selling military related gear like hats. I have found that when a medical service is needed, they do try to provide good care in a timely fashion. Some appointments may not be available quickly due to limited resources, but in the past couple of years, as funding for our VA has increased, more services have become available and appointment times are quicker. Having several Veterans in the family, past and present, I feel taking care of our Vets is a societal, moral obligation and I appreciate that this facility and those working or volunteering here are trying to provide appropriate treatment for our injured and/or ageing military vets. Any medical care system can be frustrating to navigate, especially when resources are limited. Having patients and asking lots of questions in a calm manner can go a long way. Those volunteers, who use the VA themselves, are an excellent resource of information. Stop by the lobby and chat one up. They are there to help.

Poor service all around! My initial appointment I waited in the waiting room an hour and a half…read morebeyond my scheduled time, watching people come in well after me and they were seen right away. I was told "Oh you're next" several times. I honestly felt like I was on a hidden camera show. Once in the office I waited another hour... for no physical. Only a "Hey how are you, nice to meet you. We are so busy, see the front desk to schedule your physical. I can refill your rx medication so have them fax me your old doctor's prescription!". This cost me $90. Beyond unacceptable. I then scheduled my physical... which was around 6 months. My refill did come up, and it was denied. Apparently I was supposed to go a Dermatologist? Never was told that, never given any information on that. Was told I was called (I would remember, and I see no emails or voicemails as of right now). The receptionist also said "oh we told the pharmacy", which wasn't true. The Pharmacy said it was denied with no reason given. I ended my term as patient (I genuinely feel like I wasn't one so no big loss) and honestly don't know if they cared. The medical assistant gleefully said "We can deactivate you as a patient!" Business must be good so they can treat new patients this way.
