I took the Block Island Ferry out of Fall River on a girl's trip to Block Island this Friday and it…read morewas fine. A-ok, just like the three stars implies. The ferry itself is fast, sitting on top for the trip through Newport and off to the island was fun, and on the ride back it was nice to veg out inside one of the air-conditioned interior areas and relax. However, like the other reviews have stated, my review would immediately jump up a star if their website had a better design. I restarted my order twice because I wasn't sure I had actually booked the correct tickets for my round trip service. Additionally, the $10 parking when the Battleship parking is free right around the corner (but unsecure, I know...) seems a bit silly especially for a day trip. Digital ticketing would be nice, I can't understand why their scanners won't work on cellphone screens but alas, maybe someday they'll catch-up to the times. Can't wait to go again for one of the half-price, weekday special trips.

Very poorly laid out with an amateur video shot from the backseat of a car. The calendar for arrival/departure is laid out Mon-Sun instead of the traditional Sun-Sat so you really have to be careful when booking. Then, if you want to print out your tickets, they nickel and dime you with a PDF processing fee. Lame. Call them on their 800 number to get information and you'd better be paying attention as the outgoing voice mail Talkssofastyoucan'ttellwhatsheissaying. User friendly, this ain't!

Perfect day trip--great way to explore Newport and Jamestown…read more While winging it around Newport this past weekend, our thoughtful server at the White Horse Tavern recommended we check out the Jamestown Newport Ferry--and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We arrived casually at the dock around 10 AM and hopped on without much planning. Our first stop was Fort Adams, where we enjoyed some surprisingly interesting historical sights. The timing was perfect--about an hour and ten minutes later, the next ferry arrived and took us to Rose Island Lighthouse. That visit was a standout. The guide was excellent, and we were fascinated to learn you can actually stay overnight at the lighthouse--definitely something we're planning to do in the future. (Fair warning: if you're not a fan of birds or geese, you might want to skip this stop.) Next, we cruised over to Jamestown, where the ferry crew recommended the Narraganset tavern and dinner at JB's on the Water. Enjoyed both. We were back in Newport by around 7 PM, totally relaxed, and without ever feeling rushed. Fine people, friendly staff, no stress--just a great way to experience the bay. I highly recommend the Jamestown Newport Ferry if you're visiting the area.

I am currently in a musical in Jamestown, and always try to take the boat over when I can- it gets me in the right zen headspace to do my best at rehearsal, and what better way to soak up the last few warm days before we head into fall and winter? The ferry offers different ticket packages (I usually just go for the discounted "Evening Special" ticket, but there's a daylong "Hop On Hop Off" pass where you can travel from Jamestown to Fort Adams, to Downtown Newport, and even the Rose Island Lighthouse at leisure. If I had more free time, that would be a great way to see the area for sure. Prices are reasonable (20-40 USD per guest, depending on the ticket type), and it's a wonderful way to see the City by the Sea on the sea! The boats are rustic but comfortable, with padded benches and enough seating for 20-25 guests per vessel. The crew is friendly, and alcoholic and soft beverages are available for purchase on board. Definitely add this fun ferry crossing to your itinerary next time you are in Newport!

When I was planning a trip from Boston to Long Island, I saw on Google Maps there was a ferry…read moreoption that would cut my driving time almost exactly in half. Having lived in NYC for almost a decade, I had no idea the Cross Sound Ferry existed; I thought I'd just put up with the atrocious weekend traffic in and out of Long Island. Pros: (+) The car loading process was very organized. The workers were friendly and efficient. Both my outbound and return trips left very nearly on time, which I appreciated. (+) I lucked out with beautiful weather and calm waters both times. Sitting on the top deck, basking in the sunlight, watching the coastline come into view definitely beat sitting in a bad traffic jam. If I ever go to Long Island, this is the way to travel. (I also get pretty bad seasickness and worried for days over the forecast for nothing; the ships were so smooth, I didn't feel a thing.) (+) Depending on the vessel, you can also get a history lesson. I took the MV Cape Henlopen back, which participated in D-Day. There's a commemorative plaque and everything. (+) Dog friendly! (+) Lots of seats, both indoor and outdoor. Pro tip: bring a beach towel with you so you don't burn your booty. Cons: (-) Not really a con exactly but a warning that they pack the cars in like sardines. I felt bad for the one car that had to park on a steep incline. (-) My round-trip ferry cost about $160, which is ... not exactly cheap. To me, it was worth the time saved and maybe the tolls of coming through the city and LI (though I didn't do the math) but yeah, I can see why the cost might put people off. Tips: 1. Book in advance on the website early. 2. Get to the ferry terminal early. They have a 30-minute rule for larger cars and a 15-minute rule for all other cars, otherwise you're bumped to standby and there might not be a spot. 3. From a navigation perspective, I found getting to/from New London, CT and Orient Point, NY a breeze. There are some very cute farm stands along the road to Orient Point, where you can stop and get fresh strawberries, eggs, lavender, and honey.
