I've been getting weekly personal training sessions with James Coca for a little over a year now…read moreand it's been a really worthwhile experience. I went in with some lingering injuries to my lower back and right shoulder, so James started me out the first month or two slowly with a focus on strengthening those areas before advancing to heavier weights and exercises. My primary goal was to gain strength and some muscle, but I also wanted to do some tailored strength training for my tennis game, and James diligently created and continually customized workouts each week to help me progress in those areas. He also has a great personality, which makes the training sessions fun and something to look forward to each week. As part of the personal training package, I also have access to free group classes and testing (DEXA scans, VO2 Max tests), and I've really enjoyed the Tuesday Hyrox class with Donovan and the Sunday Circuits class with Elijah. I've also now gotten two DEXA scans (9 months apart), which has shown that I've increased my muscle mass by 5 pounds while lowering my body fat percentage. In addition to seeing myself lift heavier weights over time, it's also great to be able to quantify the change in body composition as well. Overall, it's not cheap, but with the targeted training and extra access to group classes and perks, it feels like great value for the cost. I've never had a personal trainer before, and I'm glad I started last year even if it meant cutting down on expenses elsewhere - it's increased my accountability to my health goals, and that feels like a great investment!

He understands that everyone's body is different and requires different exercises and that's what I realized is the biggest selling point of personal training. His knee hurts after exercising so decided not to continue. He gave me his card but the registration person said cannot share card even though he canceled and not using it. His picture showed up when I tried to sign in with the card. The facility here is also not good compared to Fitness SF. Adult membership is $91 and Senior is $81 so not much of a discount even though his is paid for by Kaiser. They have free resistance band workout every other Wednesday at the Union Square plaza at 8am. It's a free class and the instructor is nice.

I was out of shape and need strength training because I had no muscle mass and a very weak core. I was doing Hot Yoga but was unable to continue at 100% because of my weak muscles. She is so understanding and patient with her clients and I always feel completely safe but still challenged in my workouts with her. Personal training is an investment but has been completely worth it for me!

Jakki does all that and more! I've been training with her for years and she's not only helped me to shed a few pounds and tighten it up after the holidays, but I always leave feeling energized and positive. Her routines are unique and creative and you will never be bored. Jakki is a leader in the industry, constantly furthering her education. She won't brag about her resume but she has trained with and for professional athletes much of her career and has mentors and is a mentor to professionals throughout the country. You'd be lucky to train with Jakki if you can get in with her.

I didn't know how to navigate the gym and I was a bit more shy when we started. Now I am confident in the gym and more confident in my body overall! We have one session together per week and the rest of the days it's up to me to get my workouts in. We also work on my nutrition and diet. It is a collaborative experience, so you'll get what you put into it!

I highly recommend Joan Glick, owner and trainer of Fit for the Ages. Here's why:…read more In May of 2013 I met a woman (maybe in her late 50s early 60s?) who had been seeing Joan for a few months. She said that her outlook on what she was physically capable of had changed, and she had a whole new level of optimism about what she could do. She gave me Joan's information, so I did a bit of research and made my first appointment. What I was *not* looking for was a young, studly trainer guy (or girl). I also wanted to work with someone who had seen all sorts of body types of all ages, and who was more about wisdom, patience and a positive attitude. I was self-conscious about my gelatinous body. I'm in my 40s and had never imagined I'd get as giggly as I had. I've also had issues with my back since my early 20s, and did not want someone telling me to "work through the pain." Pain is not on my agenda. I also like the positive, encouraging and happy approach to training - yelling doesn't inspire me. Joan doesn't yell - she's more like a calm, upbeat cheerleader. In the past 7 months working with Joan twice a week, I have gained a perkier butt, firmer biceps and triceps, and best of all, a much stronger core. I can sit up from a horizontal position without any 'ug' as I used to do. I'd interviewed another trainer a while back, and while I knew with him that I'd have seen results very quickly, I was not ready for the level of involvement he would have had in my life. He wanted me to keep food journals and email them to him daily. He wanted me to work with him three times a week and do additional workouts without him totaling at *least* 5 workouts a week. He was also $15 more per session. I have a budget, and I have other things I want to do in my life, so this style wouldn't work for me. When I mentioned my weight to Joan, she said, "You're in charge of the fat, I'm in charge of the muscle." That's only fair. She cannot control what I eat or drink - only I can. I am the same weight I was 7 months ago, but things have been repositioned on my body. My stomach is much smaller, my waist more defined...anyway, I'm very happy. I still need to lose weight, but that's on me. Finally, to get an idea of the surroundings - Joan has a studio in North Beach (I drive from Marin to see her now). It's one room on the ground floor, with mirrors on opposing walls, a work-out bench, various hand weights, resistance bands, a couple short ballet bars, a Bosu, exercise balls of various sizes...but there are no machines. I am amazed - totally amazed - that even after 7 months she still gives me something new to do every single visit - not the whole workout - but she changes things up all the time.

Her commitment to yoga--and to her students--was so obvious. She put in extra hours to recruit new students, help them with homework and even organized a yoga workshop over spring break. Raquel was a pleasure to work with and an asset to our school. I cannot recommend her enough.
