The food was absolutely delicious! We ordered the brussel sprouts appetizer & they were roasted perfectly with so much umami flavor. Then we split the mixed tempura and the citrus salmon roll. The tempura was good, and my daughter & husband who are both gluten free & dairy free loved that they could actually eat it! But my favorite was the citrus salmon roll. The salmon was super fresh and it has tiny slivers of lemon, green onion and an amazing soy-yuzu sauce. Normally I would say these 3 items are not enough for 3 people, but since we had eaten a big lunch earlier, it was actually the perfect amount for us. The food was a little pricey, but worth the splurge. The ambiance was dimly lit, cozy and romantic. The service was attentive and kind. I would definitely eat here again! PARKING: It wasn't exactly easy to find parking at noon on a Sunday, but the restaurant was forgiving about arriving a bit late for our reservation. SIDE NOTE: As I was walking to meet my friend (African American), she texts me that some lady yelled out of her car window window to "Go back to where you came from." A few minutes after we left the restaurant some guy yelled at me out of his car window "Hindu" in an Indian accent. So twice in one morning blatant racists yelled out of their car windows. Beautiful brown people beware of Manhattan Beach which I used to count as one of my favorites. SERVICE: We were a little hangry and worried about how we would be treated because we were shaken by the hateful incident against my friend. I was praying that our server was extra kind. Our waiter was so chill and so was the atmosphere. I had the hot green tea which was smooth and fresh tasting. There is something so comforting about tea. FOOD: We started with the portobello mushroom fries which were fried to perfection. I loved the Shiso dipping sauce. From the pictures that I saw of crispy rice sampler, I thought the fish was in whole pieces, but it is actually minced and just neatly arranged. I usually don't get the spicy versions of sushi because the taste is hidden when it is minced compared to whole pieces. I missed the white rice just a little bit. Still, they did a great job with what it was. I ordered the deluxe sushi flight for my main. The fish was simple and fresh. The ones that stood out as exceptional for me were the SCALLOP and the uni! We had the layered green tea cake for desert. We were a little skeptical of what a healthy cake would taste like, but there was not need for skepticism because I am still dreaming about the perfect melody that it sang to me. read more

Huge fan of rice! The vegan and gluten free options are incredible! Everything is gluten free (yes, the entire menu) and they bring you gluten free soy sauce to your table! I got the green wave roll (it's new) and it was so good! I would definitely get it again. My boyfriend (who is not gluten free or vegan) got the crispy rice sampler and the rainbow roll. He was a big fan of the crispy rice but didn't love the rainbow roll (it came out in under a minute so We think it had been pre-rolled for dinner). Service was great! Dreaming about the next time I eat at RICE!! We went in for a lunch date and I definitely chose the perfect place. The $25 lunch special was amazing and definitely a lot of customization available for you to build the ultimate lunch dream team. All the ingredients were so fresh and you can taste it from the appetizer down to dessert. The highlight for me was the salad. We got the quinoa salad and the other bowl a mushroom spinach salad. I equally love both as they were light but so satisfying! Sushi was amazing too and very fresh. You won't find any artificial ingredients here like crab-sticks or neon colored wasabi. I love RICE! It's great to find a 100% gluten-free restaurant! I feel so safe and satisfied eating here. It's organic too. What more can I ask? The food is delicious! We've been to Rice a number of times, and it's about time I wrote a review! In all our visits, we were focused on the sushi and didn't try other menu items. This time we did, the Ramen. Our party tried 2 kinds, the Americane and the Crunch Miso Ramen. They were crazy delicious and a pretty large portion to boot. We had some excellent sides to go with - the Kombucha Pumpkin (5 stars!) and the Chile Edemame (very good). Of course, we couldn't skip sushi rolls (SGA was excellent). Surprised we have never come here until now, as we are always in the area. It is a bit hidden though so that's most likely why. Love the healthy approach to sushi here (I love brown rice & I prefer it). Tons of amazing vegan options as well as animal-protein options. Space is small, and doesn't really have the vibe of a traditional Japanese restaurant but I don't think it's meant to. Service was attentive and quick which I appreciate for lunch. Prices IMO are high for the quality/quantity you receive. Especially some of the veggies options ($8 for a small portion of broccoli & cooked well but bland). Some favorites: Dynamite roll (crispy or reg), Spicy Tuna crispy rice & the sizzling scallops are tasty (but small) Excited to come back & try other options. Celiacs dream of completely dedicated gluten-free restaurants and this one will not disappoint you! The menu reads like many Japanese/Sushi restaurants, offering tempura (!), ramen (!) and so many rolls stuffed with fried yumminess and plenty of sauces. Not to mention GF beer (!) on the menu as well as a nice selection of sake and wine. I wanted to cry I was so damn happy that I was going to be able to order anything I wanted from the menu with confidence that I was not going to be cross-contaminated and therefore sick. I only wish I could have tried more things than my stomach had room for. I guess I'll have to visit L.A. again, soon, just so I can come back here for the stuff I missed the first time. And next time I'm bringing people with me so that we can try more things on the menu. Sometimes I just need a taste of something instead of eating the whole thing myself. I enjoyed the crispy rice sampler, the rainbow '17 roll, and then because I loved the crispy rice sampler so much I stuffed down another 4-piece crispy rice with spicy tuna (although I struggled with that choice or getting the vegetable tempura or dessert but the food was just too tempting). The crispy rice sampler was 6 pieces (or was it 8 pieces? I forget!) of deep-fried brown rice with two each topped with spicy tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. The crispy rice was indeed very crispy on the outside and fluffy and chewy on the inside. Also it was very hot, right out of the fryer, with the minced cold fish on top and a slice of jalapeno. I tried the first two pieces just dipped in a bit of tamari sauce and to tell the truth I felt like it was missing a bit of something. Wasabi and ginger! I had to ask for it, which I thought maybe the server forgot, but then I heard two other diners ask for it as well. I like to mix a healthy bit of wasabi into my tamari and then soak the ginger in it, scoop it out and place the bit of soaked ginger on top of my sushi. That did it for me. Big time! Sooo yummy. I quickly dispatched the crispy rice sampler and went to work on the Rainbow '17. The Rainbow '17 roll was cut into 8 pieces. Fresh brown rice, very lightly seasoned and rolled with cucumber and shiso with bluefin tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and albacore on top (I had them hold the avocado). The fish was really fresh and worked well together. The rolls were cut in a manageable size so I didn't feel like I was unhinging my jaw to get the thing in my mouth. At this point I should have stopped eating but I kept thinking "the whole menu is gluten free - take advantage while you're here!" Now I wish I would have tried the vegetable tempura or a bowl of ramen, or a dessert (!), but instead I went back for more crispy rice rolls. I ordered an additional 4 pieces of the spicy tuna. I asked for just two pieces but they only offer 4 pieces so I made the sacrifice and downed the extra pieces. They are very generous with the fish. If this was something I could make at home I would have used half the amount of fish for my rolls but I was pretty full at that point and kind of regretting my life's decisions. Another regret is that I didn't have room for dessert and knew I wouldn't want to eat anything later so I didn't order to go. They had some really yummy looking desserts on the menu and I love that they share the ingredients list because in addition to my problems with gluten and avocado I also can't eat corn or corn starch, etc. and often times GF desserts have corn starch in them. None of the desserts here have corn starch, so another reason I need to come back! Rice, I hope you stick around forever because I will come back for you! Expensive but worth it! The garlic albacore with fried onions was incredible, the brussel sprouts were mouth watering, and the blue fin tuna and toro were amazing. On top of that, as someone who has never liked mochi, I wish I had ordered more than one passion fruit mochi last night. As for the dishes that were not my favorite/not order again, the cucumbers were not as flavorful as anticipated, the fried portobello mushrooms were incredible but very heavy (would only want one piece next time so I need to be able to share), and although the spicy tuna crispy rice was good, I just was left wishing I had ordered more of my tuna sushi (as it was miles above in flavor and quality)! Overall all the food was great and I definitely love coming here when I visit home, even for takeout. read more

Rice offers a wonderfully fresh, organic and overall healthy take on sushi - I am SO OBSESSED. I suggest making a reservation (it's a smaller spot) and giving yourself a little time to find parking - it's not too far from the Manhattan Beach Pier, so finding a spot can be difficult. All of the items we ordered were vegan or vegetarian. We started off with the corn soup, vegetable tempura and a ginger ale. The corn soup was fresh, light and very tasty while the ginger ale was refreshingly pleasant (it was made from scratch, not overly sweet and had tiny pieces of ginger floating in it). Their tempura seemed to be made with a thicker batter vs. the light, flaky batter used in traditional tempura; it was a little different but we enjoyed it nonetheless. On to the vegan/vegetarian sushi - Green Garden Roll -- do you yourself a favor and ORDER THIS IMMEDIATELY. MAKE IT DOUBLE. This was honestly so amazing - the fresh veggies? The crunchy tempeh? The decadent truffle oil?? No soy sauce needed. My only regret was not ordering 3. Buffalo Cauliflower Roll - This one was good but not my jam (then again, I'm not a Buffalo fan. My girlfriend (Buffalo fan) would give this roll a 3.6, so take from that what you will. All in all, this was a random little gem I'm so happy to have stumbled upon. The sashimi boat was tasty and had a nice variety; the presentation on a wooden boat was interesting. The sushi flight was also tasty. The flavor of the sushi was authentic and most notable is the use of brown rice instead of white. The spider roll was interesting and fairly good. The double dragon roll, on the other hand, had very stale onion toppings which disappointed the texture of the roll. I think it's important to note the healthy theme of this restaurant but the price of what you get should be considered before dining here. The service was very kind and attentive--which is very appreciated when things got busy with more traffic coming into the restaurant. We are a huge fan of supporting local small businesses but STAY FAR AWAY from this one We tried it on a limb since we had visiting guests who are vegan the food gave us the worst food poisoning. On top of that, when we called to report it we were placed on hold and they never picked back up. There are much higher quality sushi restaurants and if you're in need of vegan or alternative sushi options, PLANTA Cocina or Erewhon are much safer, better tasting choices. read more

The service is great - orders come out relatively quickly and hot, wait staff always attentive with new orders, water, etc. And they are very accommodating- we've come through close to closing time a couple times and they're never over-aggressive as some restaurants might be, never kick us out. A good place for dinner while I wait for the traffic to die down to go home. Parking is easy on weeknight. Great for celiacs as everything is gluten-free. I had the kabocha squash per usual and a ramen bowl - rock shrimp this time. The shrimp was crisp for quite a while and somehow defied the sogginess that usually comes when a fried item is submerged in a liquid - not sure how they manage that but it was great. Like most Ramen, the end of the bowl tastes better than the beginning as the flavors meld. Still, the ramen and squash needed more flavor so I added Rayu chili sauce for a smoky kick.
