The food was outstanding, the service was exceptional, and there was truly something on the menu for everyone. The staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive, which made our celebration even more enjoyable. Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. It's not always easy to find a restaurant that can satisfy everyone's tastes, but Dash Dashi Sushi did exactly that. I will definitely be back. Dash Dashi Creates Something Electrifying There's a cold and impenetrable slab of marble that separates diners in an exhibition hub from the main action going on on the other side of the kitchen's pass through; it is where a host of chefs and demis are executing--in concert-- this incredible idea. Something quite spectacular is in the making. Hands are cleverly disguising, working under the hatch, employing various tasks in preparation of some personified version of "man?" I heard someone utter. You instinctively know it because there is an exceptional amount of care being devoted to this project--likely, a science project. No bubbling glass tubes, nor spiraling Tesla coils off-shooting from an enormous power grid--not even a reanimation table is present (not in the normal sense). There is a work surface and hands. As the chefs dash about, heating metal inserts of sushi rice blocks, and soy/mirin freshwater eel, hands to the left are pulverizing soy beans in a processor for cream cheese paste. The head chef winds a pile of kataifi and plops it into the fryer, creating a blonde nest--or, could it be a blond crown? Will it be woman or man? The senses are building--aromas clashing with tempura veggies and seafood flaring up into little savory puffs in a back fryer. And in blazing speed--a Yakimono-zara tray topped with (what looks like) a Nice to Meet Ya or Hedgehog Rolling cut roll whizzes by to it's awaiting guest. The chefs are still working, and eyes still gaping from the other side--waiting patiently for the REVEAL, when the cloak comes off and the mighty specimen is revealed... whatever it is that these artists have conjured up in those brilliantly encumbered brains of there's, is no one's guess. Their names are Chef Bank, and his ever so servile and highly gifted hands--Willie and Corn, on either side. Corn is building something with the glazed eel; Willie and the Chef Bank are working on the final topping. Their eyes seem pleased. And the plate is lifted over the hatch and presented... in all it's glory (and it is truly glorious), an indescribable feeling similar to shock... or perhaps, joy! overcomes the takers. They gasp, their eyes reel--they taste immediately, and they began to savor the flavors, cutting into the center--layer-by-layer, piece-by-piece through that magnificent halo of kataifi. The centrifugal forces of eel, spicy mayo, and edamame sauce collide as if caught in a wind storm, or better--by the force of the electrifying intensity those hands had the courage and audacity to create. And it is an audacious composition. I shall call it FRANKENSTEIN STANDING! It looks and feels, for a mere second, like all eight feet are there, maintaining as the ultimate spectacle--Dash Dashi's incarnation of the mega roll. Flavors, textures, aesthetic appeal, and palatability aside, the dish is an audacious and brave first attempt: the crispy caramelized kataifi contrasts with the creamy pearls of edamame, and it works in unison with the buttery essence of the vivid green cream cheese; the earth and body of the composition--the freshwater eel--balances the textures. The soy and mirin flavors shine through perfectly. I imagine my own experience. A resounding pair of grunts are heard--don't bother asking the opinions of the two lucky diners until they have finished every bite--and they have. Gut gemacht! That's, "Well done!" You can tell there are tons of regulars, the team has such genuine relationships with them, which says a lot about the place. The space is large with two bar areas and plenty of restaurant seating. Good sushi spot near the beach at Manhattan Beach! I visited this restaurant for takeout near sunset on a Monday and the restaurant was decently busy. My friend and I wanted to have a little beach picnic with the sushi from here so we asked for takeout. They gave us menus and we ordered our food. They then let us sit at one of the tables while we waited for our takeout orders and allowed me to use the restroom. It took about 25 minutes for our orders to be completed and even apologized for the longer wait. The packaging of the orders was decent and they stapled the tops of the bags. We ordered the OMG-3 and The Dashi rolls with White Fish Nuggets. Everything was surprisingly pretty good! The OMG-3 roll was tasty and the salmon was good. Paired with the tangy sauce it was a unique taste combo. The Dashi roll was also good. The shrimp tempura was crunchy and the jalapenos provided a nice heat. There was also a generous portion of masago which I appreciated. Paired with the sweet sauce, it was a good combo of flavors. Lastly, we were surprised with the fish nuggets. I love the variety here and the staff is friendly here. I got too much and had to take a food break the next day. I was disappointed they didn't want to do their happy hour between 3-5 PM and it looked like they do this daily typically. I was there around 315 PM, but that is probably because it was Mother's Day. I had the top secret roll (mine ended up being some kind of sashimi (white tuna?) with fried shrimp heads on the ends), The Dashi, and the Firecracker. I also had a Yuzu sake. The sushi flavors were very savory, but I was hoping the sushi was fresher. There's no direct view from the restaurant, but it's right by the beach which made for a really nice view after we finished eating. Service: Super friendly staff. We've been dining here for over three years, and while it's a sushi bar, the lead star of the show here at Dash Dashi is their 3-day marinated miso black cod!! It is to die for. I mean, I'll eat any fish marinated, but I've never had a black cod this delicious. Every time we come here we see people look in and walk on by... they are sleep walkinggggg. This place has always been clean, great service and you can make reservations via OpenTable. I don't have a personal chef but if I did, I'd have them make this cod 3x a week. She treated us to an adorable "Dashi Bear" for dessert: which was this cute little orange cut into the shape of a teddy bear. The restaurant was very clean and modern. Not too dark though! The perfect ambiance for our first date. As for the food: we tried a LOT of items. The Uni was unbelievably Delicious! So fresh and buttery. Imported fresh from Japan! The oysters were also fresh and delicious as well! Perfectly dressed with a little sauce. We enjoyed every appetizer we ordered. As for the sushi, the best fish was certainly the toro and the yellowtail. Sadly, the rice was not very moist or fresh!! We brought a group for a birthday and they were so excited to help us serve the cake at the end and even gave us candles to use because we forgot to bring some. And they were able to accommodate a large and growing group! The restaurant was not too busy on a Monday night, perfect for an intimate dinner. The menu was robust and creative, with the basics as well as speciality items. All the food came out quick and very fresh. We ordered 2 "surprise" rolls, which basically means they are unique every time and you won't know what is in the roll before it arrives to the table. She didn't give us any hints but did take requests/preferences! And the rolls came out beautifully and so good. The style of them and quality were comparable to their other intricate speciality rolls. We were also pleasantly surprised by the prices which were reasonable for the area ($5-8 for basic rolls, $14-19 for speciality rolls, $5-15 for apps).
