Purchased one of the crunchy rice rolls, portobello fries, crunch miso ramen, and the spicy miso ramen. The only things worth eating were probably the portobello mushrooms, but the roll and both ramen were incredibly bland, flavorless, and not filling. Nothing more to say in terms of flavors. Fresh vegetables? Maybe, but the flavor was nonexistent and a complete waste of money. The crispy rice sushi rolls are incredibly small for the price and they're borderline flavorless. The servers were constantly hovering around us and when we said we didn't like one bowl of ramen they just said "oh, you done?" Couldn't eat more than a few spoonfuls and when returned we were still charged full price. They didn't try to make it right, didn't offer a different plate, nothing. I was SUPER excited to try Rice - vegan/vegetarian options, healthy and fresh ingredients, and brown rice! The staff was very friendly, and the service was great. The food was fresh, but prices seemed a bit high for the amount. The tapas options on the weekends are decent - $5 per tapas order, which gives you some options for trying their crispy rice topped with things like spicy tuna or eggplant + tempeh. Many of their rolls have the same base with cucumber, avocado, and shiso, and the sashimi is wrapped on the outside. We got the Big Wave - the shiso is a great addition, but the truffle oil overpowered the salmon and shiso (IMHO). We also got the mushroom appetizer, which were pretty tasty. I always like the crispy rice topped with spicy tuna, and their version did not disappoint, but it also did not stand out from others. Overall, I like the concept of Rice - great service and food that is good for you. I think perhaps if you are looking for Japanese food and more diverse sushi options, your standard/traditional Japanese restaurant may be a better option. But if you are looking for more vegetarian/healthier options that are Japanese-inspired and don't mind spending some extra money, this is the place to go! read more

Prior to turning vegan, sushi was never a favorite of mine -- but after trying Rice for the first time, dinner and sushi became synonymous. The menu here is primarily non-plant based, and though the vegan sushi options aren't grand, what they do have, they do very well! And upon our recent visit last week (week of oct 10), we were definitely surprised to learn that two of our usual dishes (sweet dynamite and quinoa crispy rice) had been removed. We opted for the new dishes that had replaced the old ones, but it simply didn't taste the same. The menu change didn't drive us away, so we returned the next night: we requested a crispy rice with only avocado and while it was delicious, again it was just not what we loved. Upon talking to our server, Mito, about the initial change and why it was decided, he returned with the original Quinoa Crispy Rice! I might sound dramatic, but I think I *might* have actually teared up when he said the Chef was able to whip up some magic and could't promise to always prepare it, especially on busy nights (understandably). So that night, we had our beloved Quinoa Crispy Rice with a Dynamite Roll in addition to the Avocado Crispy Rice. Mito, Euriko, and the chefs at Rice definitely know how to make us feel at home (I mean considering that we do eat there weekly, once even 3 times in a week). They absolutely didn't have to do that for us, but I am quite moved that they went out of their way to satisfy us. Regards to the chef and the servers, you made our night! I'll miss the old favorites of course (and hopefully it'll make its return soon???), but with this menu of premium and organic ingredients, it won't be too difficult to find a new favorite. Come for the food, but stay for the customer service, the real candles, seasonal floral table decor, "live music", paper origami, and the organic lollipops :) If you seek authentic, quality sushi, their brown rice sushi will have you crawling back for more. I am not a sushi fan because I simply cannot stand fish. However, my friend invited me out to this cute little spot that also had vegan sushi so I was down to try it. Everything that I tried here was super yummy. The dynamite rolls were the perfect amount of spice, while the yellow submarine sushi was an excellent balance of sweet. There are so many options for everyone here and I will definitely be back to try a few more menu items. It is a cute little hole in the wall spot with a great ambience. The sushi rolls are made with organic brown rice. My favorite VEGAN rolls are the Dynamite and Yellow Brick Road. The Dynamite is a collabo of spicy tofu and avocado, packed with flavor and deliciousness. The Yellow Brick on the other hand has crispy tofu and kale on avocado with cucumber and shiso for that delectable crunch. I am in LOVE with the Kabocha Pumpkin in their sweet garlic soy sauce. We ordered three plates!! The Portabello Mushroom, Broccoli, Eggplant, and Brussel Sprout are all accompanied perfectly with other flavors like shiso sauce, garlic, and sweet miso that don't overwhelm or mask the natural taste of these wonderful earthly vegetables. I don't know much about being a vegan. Seems like a meaningful practice though. It makes sense that some people would abstain from the use of animal products, in diet and for any regular purpose. Having dined before at Shojin in Little Tokyo, I actually enjoyed the idea of food looking and tasting closely to meat, but in actuality being far from it. It's almost like you're tricking your senses to think otherwise, even though not consuming eggs and dairy products can be difficult for some. HIROYUKI IGARASHI The handsome gentleman that mans the dining room, the owner of Rice, and pupil to Tsuguhiro Morishima (proprietor of Shojin). Knowing that both restaurants were related was reassuring, since I saw similarities in their healthy, vegan, and macrobiotic food. In certain ways, I like this restaurant a tad bit more. SAKE & REAL FOOD They have a premium sake list, sold by glass, decanter, or bottle. If it weren't for my recent decision to reduce alcohol, I might have ordered a few samples myself. However, I did opt for the Strawberry Mojito and that was quite divine. Just the way a sake mojito should taste like. The organic Iced Green Tea was the best chaser. A crisp beverage to wash down all the food, including complimentary refills. Their policy is no chemical preservatives, no artificial colors, and no chemical seasonings. Surrounded by residences, there are no other businesses nearby. Near the side entrance on Manhattan Ave, there's one area for outside dining. The main dining area is small, but really cozy. We love dining in and enjoying the atmosphere but we find ourselves getting take out often too! I've been to Rice about 9 times now. The first time was in April 2013. I returned about a month later as a first meal upon returning from a trip to Japan. Service is always good (very polite and attentive, i.e. very Japanese). Food is delicious. I love that it has a number of vegan dishes but also keeps the omnivores happy. I've had the ramen (crunch miso, spicy miso), vegetable side dishes (Brussels sprouts, portobello mushroom fries, kabocha pumpkin, edamame), salads (quinoa arugula, beach), rolls (dynamite, yellow brick road, yellow submarine), and a couple of their new-ish crispy rice rolls (spicy tofu, quinoa). Everything I've ordered has been good. The people I've dined with have been pleased with the non-vegan options, too. It is not a huge restaurant so reservations are recommended during peak times. Also, they are closed in the middle of the day so be sure to check the hours. When I am missing Japan, Rice is a good choice. The #1 best seller, the Dynamite Roll, had burnt rice. It wasn't good. The brown rice made everything dull (come on people sushi is best with white rice)! Edamame was even kinda bland. Overall my favorite thing was the paper towels that expanded when they put water on them. Maybe it's because we're not from CA so we expect different. Our bill came up to $83...kind of steep. I have Celiac disease, and it is difficult to find gluten free sushi. Rice is an absolute godsend and I am so thankful. It's such a luxury to be able to come to a restaurant where I can eat absolutely everything on the menu! Been here half a dozen times in the past two months because I know it's safe for me and it is so, so delicious. I've never had a bad meal here. I've only ordered items with fish in them so I can't speak to the vegetarian/vegan menu, which is extensive and creative if you're into that sort of thing. We've tried several of the sakes-- my boyfriend and I always get a decanter, which is the perfect amount for two people, and I have my favorites but it's fun to explore. We always, always order the Sunset Pier. The crispy kale is amazing. Also love the Rising Sun. The Garlic Albacore is delicious and not to be missed. I'd advise skipping the tamari that is brought to the table because you don't need it! Every dish is perfectly seasoned/sauced. We always ask for wasabi and ginger though and they are more than happy to accommodate. Service is super quick and really friendly. They take reservations and we often make them but have never had a problem with getting a table. Haven't tried dessert here because it's not really my thing. Yummy lollipops at the door on the way out. Rice is now one of my go-tos as a Celiac diner, and I'm so glad to have found a delicious restaurant with food that is of an exceptional quality and also safe for me! read more

Took the boyfriend here for his birthday and it satisfied us beyond our expectations! We're already planning what we're going to try during our next trip here. First of all, best vegan sushi we have had anywhere! We tried the Yellow Brick Road and Purple Fantasy. I wish the Purple Fantasy had more eggplant but they were both delicious! We also got the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tofu. After tasting this, I can't wait to try their other crispy rice options. It was absolutely wonderful! I ordered the spicy ramen, kabocha and a roll. The kabocha was really good! I definitely recommend that if you go! The ramen was just ok. I didn't care for the noodles at all. The broth was fine. It was somehow spicy but a little bland. I have an avocado intolerance. They make me sick and give hives. I ordered a sushi roll that did not have avocado listed as one of the ingredients, however it was in the roll. I ate a piece without realizing that and almost immediately I had to take a trip to the bathroom. They list avocado on some of the rolls so I don't understand why they didn't list it for the one I ordered. That kind of ruined everything. Got the cake trio-the cakes are tiny and nothing special. For vegan Japanese I would recommend skipping Rice and going to Shojin instead. I wish I could rate this place 2.5, it's not bad but not great. read more

Vegan Sushi? Hell yes. A friend of mine works a few blocks away told me about a new sushi place that offers vegan sushi. I had to see it to believe it. Once we stepped inside, the restaurant looked incredibly small. Maybe no more than 10-12 tables maximum. We were seated at the sushi bar but my main issue was that I was staring at a black counter-top. To look over into the sushi bar I had to almost stand up to look over. We started with shishito peppers that were covered with soy sauce and had a good amount of saltiness to it. No complaints here. Another dish we started with was Orange Kale salad that was covered with a balsamic soy sauce that I really liked. I am growing more fond of kale so this made the dish more tasty with the sauce. On to the main courses. Vegan Rolls were Dynamite Roll which was Spicy tofu with avocado drizzled with sauce on top. The other roll was Purple Treasure that was Fried Tempeh, avocado topped with fried tender eggplant. Both dishes were really good and with the fish not being there it made this extremely different. I know sushi normally should not be that fishy to begin with but this was great. Over the duration of my meal, the restaurant got crowded quickly which is a good sign. This is a review on the "waiting" experience I had with my hubby and three year old daughter a few months ago. It was a Friday night and was fairly early (7:30p) since we wanted to make sure our daughter wouldn't get too grouchy if we were out too late. When we got there, there were only 2 other couples ahead of us and they told us the wait would only be 30 minutes...that would mean we would be seated by 8pm so our daughter would still be in good spirits. Well, 30 minutes went by and when I went to check on the table, they were just waiting for the patrons at the table (where they were planning on seating us) to pay their bill. They offered that we sit in the back outdoor area where we could order a drink while we waited. Well this back area is an office courtyard to the adjacent businesses. The seating was on the cement steps on the stairs. As we waited in the back, a party of 4 had arrived and I overheard them talking about how they were only 20 minutes late for their reservation and couldn't believe that they had to wait for their table....(can you tell where this story is going). I checked with the hostess at least three more times on the status of our table and she kept saying, "just a few more minutes, can you wait five minutes"? Well, we felt so committed at this point, what was another five minutes to wait? Shortly after the last "five-minute" promise, the hostess seated the late party of 4 in our table. When hubby went inside to tell the hostess that we couldn't wait any longer (it was well over an hour by now) she didn't even apologize or acknowledge the fact that we waited so long and didn't get seated. I was extremely disappointed because I was really looking forward to trying their vegan dishes that people have raved about on Yelp. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Rice nor will i be recommending this restaurant to any others! read more

This place is intended to cater to the MB crowd. Growing up in a Japanese American household, I'm accustomed to eating healthy, and satisfying meals. Rice gets one part of the equation right. Nothing is satisfying about it. The portions are horrendous for the price. I can get a to go order of brown rice sushi from Mitsuwa or Marukai and pay half the cost. This place is a rip off. It's vegaaaan, I'm still not over it. This place wins for being gluten-free too, as celiacs and gluten intolerants know soy sauce is usually a scary thing. Fortunately, at Rice there is no need to fear and no reason to feel like a bubble boy or girl (even if you really are). So just relax and enjoy. I found my dinner at Rice very disappointing. I was hesitant about coming here due to the somewhat mixed reviews, but hopeful. The good: The atmosphere is cute and typical. Our service was friendly and attentive. Dinner starts with steaming, hot towels. It is open later than most of the restaurant in MB. Organic lollipops up front. (My favorite part of the meal. I kid you not.) Vegan friendly. Brown rice. Serves sustainable fish. The not so good: Food lacks flavor. My husband commented that the spicy tuna on crispy rice tasted like popcorn. I joked that we just got a huge bag of popcorn from Whole Foods for $1.69 and did not need to pay $10 for 4 tiny pieces of popcorn flavored bites. The spicy tuna seriously lacked flavor. I would not order this again. It was very bland. Strange texture choices. We ordered the albacore roll. There was a large slice of crunchy cucumber inside. This made up half of the skinny roll. It was all I could taste. I then removed the albacore to try it alone. It was just mediocre fish. My taste buds did not do a happy dance. Nothing was special about this dish except that the cucumber was a terrible choice. My hubby and I decided to skip the other dishes we were planning on ordering. I have learned to start with two dishes at a new sushi place before going crazy. I am glad we follow this policy. We left in a hurry and headed out for delicious gelato to salvage our culinary experience for the night. Maybe our expectations were too high after dining at Flyin Fin last week. I was excited to try Rice because of it's location and it never seemed very busy from outside. Unfortunately, I was incredibly disappointed. The lack of choices with regards to fish was surprising, with tuna comprising about 90% of their selection. We ordered the poke and the portion was not even large enough for one person ($18). Their sushi is made with brown rice only, which I get is healthier, but I didn't care for the taste and feel white rice should at least be an option.
