Doctor Rice treated a serious injury from a cat bite/scratch and probably kept me out of the hospital because they would have had to admit me to treat the infection. He treated me with 3 days of IV antibiotics in addition to a prescription. As a result it did not get worse and healed as quickly as possible. He is professional, very knowledgeable, and pleasant. I've had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Rice. He's been personable, professional, and reassuring in every possible way, every possible visit. As a doctor (psychologist), I understand that scheduling is often out of the control of the practitioner. I see some negative reviews here from people who had to wait... and all I can say is... I've never run over with one of my patients unless they needed me more than the next person did. Suicidality, withdrawal symptoms, psychotic breaks. I'm going to give an MD the same benefit of the doubt. If I'm there for a physical and I have to wait an extra hour, I'm picturing him in the office with someone who just learned they have HIV... with someone who is in a medical crisis... with someone who presented with something supposedly simple that turned out to be incredibly complex. It's a doctor's office, life-threatening things happen. I'm not going to be angry because he's running behind; he's doing his damned job. I don't know anyone at any job who takes twice as long on a task as they should because it's fun, it's always about a crisis of some sort, and I'm going to give the guy some slack. Especially because he might read this, I'm turning forty soon, and his fingers may have to go somewhere less-than-comfortable next year. Bottom line: Highly recommend. This is still my "PCP" when I am living in the US because even when I'm travelling, Dr. Rice and his staff provide good advice and are willing to double check work from doctors across the world, even in the busy holiday seasons. His office has moved several times since I first started going here for yearly physicals, but I'm always impressed by how amazingly knowledgeable (and perhaps more importantly) and nice the staff here is. Young girl who answered the phone told me she had an opening for a 5:30 appointment. I said 5:30 are you sure because google says you close at 5. She said yes. I've visited Dr. Rice only 4 times. I had pain from an injury that I wanted him to take a look at, but I also had other concerns, which he addressed. I also needed a new primary care physician after Dr. Harbour at Stanford stopped his general practice. My first visit went great. He was very thorough, addressed my concerns, gave me good advice. My follow-up visit went well. We discussed an issue I had and he gave me a few suggestions. He also wanted me to take blood tests to check my blood sugar and wanted me to log my blood pressure. On my third visit things went down. He didn't have my file with him to look at notes and see what was discussed in the previous appointment. He suggested things that he already suggested and this visit was supposed to be the follow-up. Of course I reminded him of our previous conversations and he seemed surprised we got that far. Really? My 4th visit was horrible. First it took a long time to get my appointment with a specialist before my fourth visit. His office did not fax the necessary documents (as he promised he would) and I had to keep following up to make sure it was done. He also promised he'd call me as soon as he received the results. After my test two weeks went by, but I was told it would only take a week. When I called Rice's office they had my results in my file. The day of the actual 4th (and last) visit I was 10 minutes early. I ended up waiting for an hour and a half. It was Friday, it was busy, end of the week, I get it. But an hour and a half? I could not reschedule because I had already take time off from work, so I waited. When it was FINALLY my turn he was obviously in a rush to get out of there since I was the last appointment. I don't appreciate being rushed when it's clear I'm not the one who's late. Furthermore, again, he did not have my file in front of him and wasn't sure why I was there. I reminded him and he went off to retrieve my file, and then went over the test results as fast as he could. Dr. Rice is a very nice man and he probably has served others wonderfully, but he fell short when it came to me. And I'm not a needy patient. I'm very healthy and I rarely see doctors (I actually have not seen a doctor in about a year), but I wanted a physician because I'm almost 40 and I know I need to watch certain things. Dr. Rice has been a fantastic family doctor for me. He's very responsive, calling me back when I have issues and he insisted on doing personalized follow-ups after I recently ended up in the ER. I've never had a general physician that actually made me feel like a human being - Dr. Rice has both personal compassion and does the deep medical research to really help when you need it! Additionally he has an extensive contact database - he is quite good at referring patients to local specialists when that is called for. I'd give him 5 stars, but for two things: 1) His practice falls short in the administration. I've repeatedly had to follow up directly with his staff when he gives them instructions to call me with information (routine test results, etc.). He's moving to an online patient system that will hopefully alleviate this type of issue, but it's the one sticking point in an otherwise top-notch practice. 2) He is often running late, because he's spending more time with patients that are there before you. Summary: before i paid 500$ for a 30-40min consultation, he was helpful and quick to answer questions. But after, he hasn't taken time to return a call for a question. That's maybe just a bad coincidence, but only one person knows the answer and that's him. Full story: I tried to contact him for some vaccines because i was going to travel in Bolivia, i left a message (did he already knew i was going to spend ~500$? that's possible). He promptly returned the call and told me that i could see him the day after or the same day if i confirmed him in the morning that i wanted to consult him for the vaccines. I consulted him, he took time to explain things and everything went smoothly i was pretty happy back then. I just came back from Bolivia and tried to contact him (had his secretary(?) + left another message) for a quick question about malaria. Now it has been 72h+ since the first time i tried to contact him, he hasn't bothered returning my call. I just created an account to leave this review and warn ppl. Don't waste your time - literally. I have been a patient of Dr. Rice for 3 years. He continues to disappoint in the time it takes to wait for an appointment. On August 22, I had a 2:00 p.m. appointment. At 2:55 he comes to the lobby to call me back. He had been with 1 other patient during that time. When I finally get to see him - he has to spend more time navigating the computer system than he does actually with the examination. The final piece was he had two Rx to call in to my pharmacy for me. One is an OTC that is limited due to abuse by Federal law and the other one is a nasal spray. I went to the pharmacy to pick them up today and the OTC Rx was ordered incorrectly. Instead of Claritin D - he order another Rx that had a co-pay of over $100. Now I have to wait until Monday, call his office and hope and pray they will call in the correct Rx. BTW - just to be clear, this is a repetitive situation in terms of running late and administrative errors. The last appointment I had to leave and reschedule after waiting an hour and fifteen minutes. I will be finding a new primary care doctor. My time and health are too important to risk at this type of practice. read more

Dr Rice is a highly skilled professional and a wonderful human being. How often can one find that rare combination all in one person! He is the kind of doctor you'd wish everyone in the medical profession to be. I found him to be putting my (the patient's) interest ahead of anything else every time. Owing to him I was able to receive timely and effective treatment. I was referred to him for unexplained and non-symptomatic high grade fever. Dr. Rice made time to see me same day, he personally called multiple labs to get me set up for diagnostic tests late on Friday evening and himself stayed back late until my test results came in so that he could begin treating me without delay. He went out of his way to see me over weekends in order to administer treatment. I found Dr Rice to be extremely knowledgeable and he was able to zero into my diagnosis accurately and quickly. Same day appointments, NOT! It's a thurs.@ 9:30am and I called for an appointment . The best they could do for me was Monday @ 2:45! I all but begged to get in to see Dr. Rice. I explained that I was a recent stage ll breast cancer survivor and 6 yrs ago I had a life threatening staph infection (MRSA) in the same place that is infected now. Only this time there's no visible wound; it seems to be in the bone (urgent care x-ray). Like last time, the pain is intense! Dr.Rice is by far the best doctor i have ever encountered. I have been treated by dr rice since 11/2006 at my lowest point in my life. He recently can be credited for saving my life when i almost died from septic shock. Prior to that he admitted me into the hospital for a week of tests and screenings to diagnose me. A true godsend. Waiting for 30 min before actually being seen by Dr. Rice was not a big deal. He gave me a very in depth educational talk about STD testing that was very informative (and helpful). I decided to get a urine test and a blood test, and he offered to draw my blood right then and there in the office, or to go to the lab located nearby, but in a different building, at my convenience. I figured why not just get it done by him since I was there and he seemed happy to do it. BAD DECISION. I'd never gotten my blood drawn before, so I didn't know what to expect. He said he draws blood "all the time" and took one look at my vein and said "Oh look at that you have a really big vein this will be easy." He poked my arm and felt around for a vein a couple times, couldn't find it, and decided it was because I was cold, so he heated a hot pack, put it on my arm, and left me there for about 10 minutes. When he came back, he exclaimed that my vein had grown 2x in size and that this would be no problem at all anymore. He proceeded to poke and move the needle around in my arm another 3 times or so and finally (I was in quite a bit of pain through this) I said we should give up. He wanted to try some more, or try on my other arm but no way in HELL was I going to let him keep failing. So he sent me off to the lab (this all took 1 hr 40 min total!) so they could try there and "use the tricks they know." I ran to the lab (only had 20 min until it closed) that was located in a different neighboring complex and the lady working there was outraged when she heard that he had tried and failed multiple times, explaining that he had likely ruined her chances of using my "good vein." At this point I was very apprehensive about trying again (especially on my non-dominant arm, since they informed me it's usually easier to get a vein from the dominant arm). She took one look at my good (non-dominant) arm's vein and said "Oh I see it right there, this will be easy." Well, I'd heard that before and did not believe her at all, and then she poked me once, to tricks of any kind by the way (it was much less painful than any of Dr. Rice's attempts) and the blood flowed freely and easily. It hardly hurt at all and it's been a day now and there's just a teeny tiny dot where she poked me (it doesn't even hurt when I press on the spot with my finger). The arm that Dr. Rice tried on is covered in scabs, and there is a nasty bruise forming (it hurts to even bend it, let alone touch it). Dr. Rice did not really apologize even when I left to go to the lab, except to say "Sorry, your vein just seems to be moving around a lot" as if he was apologizing for my veins and their own fault of being difficult (obviously not the case since the lady at the lab did it just fine). All in all Dr. Rice was too proud and self-absorbed to admit defeat and tried much too many times (I counted at least 6 scabs), and wanted to continue trying! If I had ever had my blood drawn before I would never have let him continue for so long. If you absolutely have to go see this guy under some unfortunate circumstances, I would REFUSE to let him draw blood no matter how much he acts like he's "really good" at it like he claims. read more

Most of my doctors at El Camino Hospital are extremely dedicated, so it's difficult for Dr. Rice to distinguish himself in this way; and yet, he does. In addition to seeing me/having me seen daily while in the hospital (an increasing rarity these days), his mastery of Infectious Diseases proved essential to my recovery, given my plethora of drug allergies and complications. A few years ago I had what seemed to be a spider bite that introduced an infection into my leg. 48 hours later I was nearly in a coma and the GP at ECH wanted to amputate my engorged leg.Dr Rice worked on me all through the first night, filling me with antibiotics (through a tube into my heart... yikes)....He continued his care for the next few weeks, after which I was able to crawl out of the hospital (but on both legs)....Dr. Rice was my MVP at the most critical crunch time. Since Dr. Rice is a board certified specialist in Infectious Disease Medicine, it took a referral from my primary care physician before I could see him. My view is that Dr. Rice is that special doctor that every patient wants to find. He is not only board certified in his specialty, but he really cares about his patients. He knows who you are without looking at a chart. He answers questions with thoughtful, detailed, and respectful answers. When I asked him about my prognosis, he shared his opinion and he also emailed me a link to detailed profession medical literature on the subject. I was flattered that he thought I could understand the document. He helped me through several tough times I was having with the medication and he quickly ordered tests when I was not feeling well just to check my status. I am confident that I could not have made it through the month of infusions without Dr. Rice. Dr. Rice has a small infusion area with three chairs. Since he was short of staff, he was giving the infusions himself. The other patients in the lab were very nice, and we became an informal support group. Dr. Rice's office is computerized and paperless. He is associated with El Camino Hospital so he can get lab results back in about 24 hours. I found that the best time to see Dr. Rice is 11:00 am or later. Other doctors are frequently calling Dr. Rice to consult with him, and they send their patients with urgent infectious disease needs to see him. This means that he is busy and sometimes you have to wait, but it is always worth it because he will spend all the time you need with you. If you have an infectious disease and you want a doctor that "goes the extra mile for his patients" and you can travel to Mountain View near El Camino Hospital, ask to be referred to Dr. Rice.
