Dr. Marill and his staff are genuinely awesome. The dental chairs look out to the water, which is totally relaxing. All my tooth work (fillings/crowns) have been pain free while in doctor Rick's chair. I had *the* best teeth cleaning ever by Shay today. She was very thorough and scraped those tough spots on the teeth by the gums efficiently and gently. Their prices are affordable for those of us without insurance. I found Dr. Marill via an ad at the Alameda theatre one night and something clicked for me. I scheduled my visit for the same week and from the moment I walked in the door, I knew this was going to be an entirely new experience. I am one of those people who spent years in fear of a dentist. Cleanings scared me, visits scared me, the thought of anything that would cause me pain orally scared the bejeezus out of me. I even referred to dentists as butchers. But of course common sense dictates that you can't put off going to the dentist forever and soon enough a couple of set backs had me looking for a dentist I could commit to. The years of neglect and recent job stress had taken a toll on my teeth but not so badly that it couldn't be fixed and reversed. Dr. Marill explained clearly and patiently all that would need to be done to give me the smile of my dreams. I'd even been toying with the idea of some cosmetic surgery to correct things I'd lived with since I was a kid. I was also provided with wonderful information on just why dental health is so important not just for what happens to you orally but how it effects the rest of your body's health as well. I can honestly say that today I have a smile even the celebs would be envious of. Until now I hadn't realized that I'd spent almost my entire life smiling behind my hand or not at all. I never liked my smile despite feeling like a happy person. Since visiting Dr. Marill everyone around me notices how much more I laugh and smile openly. I've never had a moment of pain or fear while in his care or the care of his staff. In fact, I eagerly look forward to my dental visits just to see all the wonderful people. I was referred to this dentist through the 1-800-dentist service. I am not a fan of dentists. To quote Woody Allen my mouth is "my second favorite orifice" (ears being first for music). And I don't want drugs just kindness and competence. And that is what I got. Dr. Marrill and his office staff have incredible confidence and some of the best customer service attitudes I have encountered anywhere. To be honest the only reason why I have been searching for a good dentist was due to an unfortunate event where my previous dentist (Dr. Jasper Lee who would've been my dentist for life...you are truly missed!!) had passed away from cancer. Since then I have tried two different places and have been unsuccessful each time. The problem I had with Dr. Richard Marill was that I felt like I was being hassled by a used car salesman. First of all I've been there three times so far over the past year and each time I've been there I've had a different hygienist working on me. On top of that....I've never heard of any dentist saying that they recommend patience coming in every 3 month instead of every 6 months?? I brush and floss DAILY so what is up with that??? Also everyone there seems to always be pushing a product on me of some kind. First the hygienist asked me to consider purchasing an electric toothbrush that they sold there in the office and when I declined the first time I thought it was over. Then I see Dr. Marill for a quick overview and then he tries to push the electric toothbrush on me saying he's got the best deal for me. And then as I'm trying to schedule my next appointment, they now have the receptionist trying to get me to buy the damn thing! And the final straw was when my birthday was coming up not too long ago, I received what i thought was going to be a nice card in the mail....however the card was a birthday card, but for 20% off if I decide to get my teeth whitened!!! I mean what the hell...are they trying to sell me a car or clean my teeth??? The funny thing is Dr. Marill really did seem like a pretty cool guy with a friendly staff, but he has never even worked on my teeth over the past year. Yeah he sticks his little mirror in there and makes some suggestions/comments, but it's his MANY DIFFERENT hygienist that actually does all the work. I'm going to find me another dentist who doesn't have a different hygienist working on me every time! I have no dental insurance, and also am a poor grad student... but Dr. Marill took me in anyway! I had a filling fall out (along with some cosmetic work fall out with it) and he was able to see me right away. No Fuss...No Muss... fixed up my tooth and didn't make me do the whole "first patient" garbage. He also charged me appropriate to the time he spent on me.... SO RARE! Not to mention he and his nurses were hilarious! I actually had FUN at the dentist! What a fluke.... read more

I have been going here for about ten years. The staff is very friendly and takes care of your needs. I think what makes it stand out from other dental office is the beautiful, tranquil location that helps you relax. I also like taking a rose home at the end of my visit. And when I have a problem with my insurance company (who doesn't these days?) the staff is very good at making me at ease while they quickly fix the problem, making me return every time to keep my smile in check! read more

I've been going to Dr. Marill's office for almost two years now with terrific results. My previous dentists were not willing or able to work with me on improving my habits. Both of the technicians who perform the cleanings are very good and willing to accommodate my sensitive teeth with various modifications to their regular process. My husband finally got proper care. Several previous dentists gave only cursory, negligent care to treat "spot" problems, so Dr. Marill's understanding his overall problem and subsequent successful systemic intervention was a huge relief for him! Everyone in that office is very kind and understanding, willing to listen to dental or oral health history and problems, and work with you to find the solution that is best for you. If you prefer to work with a particular hygienist only, they will respect that and schedule you accordingly. If you need to schedule payments for your out-of-pocket costs they can work with that too (within reason of course, they are a small business and I've always respected that in return). I would say the number one thing I feel when I visit Dr. Marill's office is respected. They exhibit a level of respect for their patients that too many medical or dental care providers totally lack. All in all my husband and I are very satisfied with the care we have received here and have recommended this dentist to several friends who are all very happy as well. read more

I have sleep apnea and Dr. Marill offers the best device available. Its split into two parts so you won't have problems with jaw locking. The fitting went very well. The Dr. spent more than enough time with me to make certain that the device fitted perfectly. The staff is very courteous and the pricing, while not cheap, is comparable given that its the best i've ever used. I'm very pleased with the result because i'm sleeping much better. This review might be outdated since I last went to Richard Marill's office back in 2002 a few times and I must say I was pretty disappointed with the overall experience. First the positives, the staff was friendly and the office location is nice and faces the waterfront in a quiet area of Alameda. That was the only thing I felt good about. During my visits, it was clear to me that he was doing a rush job on me and a filling he did on one tooth was misaligned and I had to do endure a painful night and repeat visits to fix it. I was especially upset by the fact that he rushed through a bunch of fillings including one extra one he never told me about initially and charged me for. I have switched to a much better dentist in SF since then and the results are a whole lot better. I would never recommend the Richard Marill of 2002 to anybody (he might have changed now in all fairness) read more

First off, thanks Dr. Marill for the good news! No cavities after 3 decades! You made me a very happy young man. Shea's upbeat nature and friendly conversation during my visits made me very appreciative of the office culture. I never thought I'd look forward to visiting a dental office after my semi-traumatic experience as a child. She made each visit extra pleasant by laughing with me and giving me a good foundational knowledge of what I needed to do to heal. Shea has a super empathic nature toward human beings and love for maintaining healthy people; it's a beautiful trait to have as a dental hygienist. I'm thankful that she took such good care of me during my visits. I'm looking forward to the next one. I felt more like I was going to a spa than to the dentist... chair massage, port view, great service... I can't imagine what more I'd want. I was experiencing some sensitivity to cold, so I went in to have it looked at. Dr. Marrill found a cavity, and after drilling and filling, it was still just as sensitive to cold. When I asked how long it would take to feel better, I was told that there was no way to tell, that I should give it a few weeks. I did, and it still hurt so I went in again. Seems that the filling he put in didn't go all the way to the edge of the cavity that he drilled, so there was some empty space in the tooth and I was told that's what was causing the pain. I had to make yet another appointment (time off of work) to go in and get it drilled out and filled AGAIN. They obviously didn't charge me for this, since it was fixing his mistake. Now the tooth has been drilled and filled twice, which he told me has weakened the tooth and it may have problems down the road. Great. If he'd filled it right the first time it would have saved me several weeks of pretty intense pain and the tooth wouldn't be weakened. I'm looking for a new dentist, as I won't go back to one who can't even fill a basic cavity. It's particularly a bummer since his office is quite close to my house, and I like him as a person. The reason I gave them two stars is the great staff. Jeannie and Shea in particular are wonderful. Oh, and he gives the best and most painless Novocaine injections that I've ever had - I hate needles, and his injections are the easiest I've ever felt. Hell, that may make this worth 3 stars for that alone, but then I'd have to take one away since I need to find a new dentist who probably won't be as good with the needle. read more

I've been going to Dr Marill for over 20 years and have always been very happy with him and his staff. However, after my recent procedure, I can honestly say they are absolutely THE BEST!! Doc Marill has been trying to talk me into having my front 2 crowns replaced for years. I'm petrified of being without my crowns - and of the temporaries falling off. I'd much rather have ugly teeth than face that possibility. Well, he finally convinced me. First we whitened - that was actually fun watching my teeth get whiter every day. Then it was time for the crown prep - very scary day! But Jeannie held my hand and Doc Marill was as gentle and thorough as he could be. I left with a pair of nice looking temps and lived with them for a few weeks - and they never fell off! Then came the real crowns. He took a great deal of care to get them just right and boy are they! For the first time in my life I have beautiful teeth and a great smile. I'm constantly getting compliments on how great I look - don't think anyone can figure out what's different, just that I look great. So, thank you again Dr Marill, Jeannie, Nancy and everyone! Oh - and the other great thing about Doc Marill - he has an endless supply of stupid jokes. read more

I miss Dr. Marill but he chose a great person to replace him and that is Dr. Dahria. I have such fear of going to the dentist I usually wait until it is too late. Recently I went to see her because of pain. She explained to me why I was having pain, showed me where the pain was coming from by her new digital X-rays, and reassured me she was gonna get me out of pain. I have been told by dentists before that they will numb me so "I won't feel the pain". If you have the fear that I have it also involves the sounds of the drills that makes you have the willys. Dr Dahria helped me mentally and physically overcome my fear. Beth and Jeannie are a great part of the staff that makes you feel like family when you come in. I truly recommend and appreciate the care I have received from the most dreaded place I hate to go to but know I need in order to continue having these pearly whites. read more

I will NEVER EVER brighten the doorway of this place again. Not even if paid to do so or for free services. However, I will say that the receptionists are extremely professional and nice, and the Dental Assistant was very comforting when she knew that I was not a fan of Dentists. Now for the negatives. Dr. Marill has the bedside manner of Atilla the Hun. He became defensive when asked simple questions. I let it go the first 2 times, but quickly realized after the secondary and tertiary visits that he really is generally grumpy and doesn't like to be questioned -- about anything. And let's face it, I don't make it a practice of paying anyone to abuse me verbally, and that's exactly what he did on my first, second, and last vist. I was reluctantly coerced into a visit by their very nice receptionists because I believed that I might need a root canal (I did), and it was done by this Monster of a (I use this next term reluctantly) Man. He was rough, rushed, and after 90 minutes in the chair, he thought he might need to refer me to a Maxillo-facial Surgeon. Which is what I would have preferred considering what happened next. He decided to forge ahead instead of admitting to defeat because I have unusually long and delicate roots -- something I mentioned before the appointment, and he broke the root while drilling. He then continued to complete the process, and sent me home with a prescription for Norco. I called the next day with excruciating pain. I called several times in the subsequent week complaining of pain, and he finally decided I should come back in. I did, and he then had an x-ray done. When he looked at the x-ray, he yelled "YOU BROKE THE FUCKING ROOT & NOW I HAVE TO EXTRACT THE TOOTH".....NO SHIT BRAINIAC!!!!!! but YOU broke it when you did the root canal, and didn't want to say anything. He knew it, and I eventually knew it as well but didn't want to be accusatory or rude considering this was the first root canal I had ever had and didn't know what to expect post-surgically as far as pain, swelling, or anything for that matter. I'm NOT a Dentist. I'm a patient, and I put my faith in someone that has been practicing for as long as he supposedly has, and I expect him to be ethical, knowledgeable and proficient. Especially at those prices, and having to endure being abused verbally by this asshole. I am DAMNED ANGRY (obviously), and I would vehemently caution anyone that considers going to see this incompetent asshole. Furthermore, in between now and my last horrific visit 40 days ago, they have sent me 2 coupons for services and in the language of the coupons, they try to shame you into coming back in with horror stories of what will happen if you don't. Newsflash: I'm a Medical Professional, and I'm VERY aware of the benefits of preventive dentistry. Too Bad that the only horror story here is a Dentist named Richard B. Marill. Retire before it's too late you fricking hack. One star is being overly generous in this case. read more

Unfortunately I have had some troubles with Dr. Marrill's office. The worse part is that when I sent him an email to address my complaints, he emailed me back with a shocking attack response with assumptions and inaccuracies. I've never had a business owner react that way before to a complaint and he even went so far as to imply in his email that I was irrational and mentally unstable. My complaint included the following items: (1) that there was no dentist on duty during one of my check ups and I was not informed of this until half way through my appointment; (2) the hygenist on three visits was implying that I had a condition that was never diagnosed by a dentist; (3) that when I asked the hygenist (three times) to leave off discussing this undiagnosed condition, she continued to discuss it regardless of my previous requests to wait until I could discuss it with a dentist, and then when she had instruments in my mouth she again went on about it with very defensive dialogue. You know how it is when they have instruments in your mouth and you can't say anything? It felt like she was taking this opportunity to keep talking when I couldn't respond! When I gave her a hand signal to stop talking, she really lost it. I've never seen such unprofessional behaviour in a dentist office before. The most unprofessional part though, was the abrupt and rude way in which Dr. Marrill responded to the compaint. Really quite amazing. We won't be going there anymore. read more
