It is very strange to me that this practice either gets 1 s or 5 s. How can they be both? My lst…read morevisit was a total body check and I felt the doctor was very thorough. Having worked for many years as a nurse in an established derm practice in Monterey I am quite familiar with "skin issues" and care. I recently had to get in for a pretty urgent issue and they were able to give me an appointment with in a couple of days which was great. Dr. Bonante took a look at my issue, ordered some blood tests but was in and out of the room relatively quickly. She is businesslike and not from what I could see very personable but perhaps she was having a bad day. So my rating is middle of the road for now, we shall see how she addresses my concerns when she sees the blood work.

I call to let them know I am going to be about 15 minutes late. I speak with someone named Morgan. She tells me I will not be seen so should not bother coming in and tries to reschedule me. I let her know my frustration and asked how it was that last time I was in I waited over 45 minutes to be seen plus the appointment time equaling over an hour. So apparently it's OK for them to be late to my appointment and my time is not as valuable as theirs. Got it. She then explains they see over 50 patients a day, etc. So I am supposed to accept their excuse for being late, but mine is dismissed. Got it. She then tells me she will be sending a $75 cancellation fee bill to me. Really? She tells me about their 10 minute policy that if a patient will be more than 10 minutes late to the appointment they will be refused. I guess I need to put in writing that my policy is that if the doctor is more than 40 minutes late to my appointment I charge a $75 fee. Then she asks if I want to reschedule. Nope. My whole family are patients. I should say my whole family were patients. My wife called and cancelled all upcoming appointments for our entire family based on the principle. Save yourself the headache and money if for forbid there is a traffic accident or issue on your appointment day as you will be met with a monotone dismissive conversation on the other end along with a $75 missed appointment fee. So hopefully it was worth losing thousands of dollars in future visits over $75.

Update: My review remains basically the same…read more Pro: Dr. Rheim (junior, his father also used to work in the practice, but I believe has retired) is an excellent dermatologist who is capable, takes his time as needed, and has great bedside manner. Con: The practice seems to have taken on more patients than it can support, and the issue is getting worse. I have an annual check-up appointment, and if I ever have to reschedule it, the next available appointment used to be about half a year out, and now that's shifted to a full year out. It's great that there's so much demand for the practice, but there's a limit to how many patients a practice can support. Also, the front office staff often seem stressed and surprisingly hostile toward patients (see other reviews, this appears to be a widespread experience), which is probably not unrelated to the practice taking on more patients than it can support and the front office having to handle patient frustrations with that. Or maybe it's just a staff member whose hostility has nothing to do with her experience working at the practice?

I continue to be a patient due to the quality of care provided by Dr. Rheim. The review is in fact for the Front Desk staff. I get major anxiety when my appointment is approaching. I fear walking up to the reception to give my co-pay because anything sets her off. The lady in the back desk too. She argues and speaks over you. I feel distressed in the waiting room, because I hear and see how they treat patients. The staff is beyond rude. They are so mean! Condescending. Office manager is not helpful either. I am relieved when I sit in the exam room. They never return phone calls. I have had to go to the office in person and even then, I am made to feel stupid.

In context I was stating that my hair-line had receded since the last visit; which I don't recall affirmation of, then I wanted to use their reference images to validate my claim. So either it was dismissive, evasive, or both. 3) Dr Biren informed me that finasteride is not FDA approved and treated as "under the table." The implication; IIRC, being that its not really prescribed or approved to address male pattern baldness. Much like how Minoxidil was originally prescribed for high blood pressure - The assertion (or implication?) is that even today these drugs are prescribed "under the table" as they are not intended to address balding at all. I took her word at the time but quick research shows that Finasteride has been FDA approved for male pattern baldness since the 90s. 4) While they brought up potential blood pressure monitoring; as they prescribed Oral Monoxidil in the prior visit, they both did not follow up and seemed to have misplaced the tools needed for blood pressure measurement? I even expressed excitement over getting my blood pressure readings at the time. I was recommended by a Monterey Primary care doctor who did not know what Finasteride was at all. Stated it was another name for Minoxidil. Then recommended this Dermatologist once it became evident that assertion was false. Is this a thing with Monterey doctors? I have already spent hundreds of dollars and been delayed for almost a year (IE Primary doctor - Dermatologist initial - Dermatologist follow up). My initial goal was to; basically, get a prescription for Finasteride and have my health indicators monitored for negative side-effects. Instead I'm told Finasteride == Monoxidil and that Finasteride is not FDA approved. I really don't know what to make of that. Incredibly frustrating. The general attitude I sensed from my visits was; basically, that I should just accept that I am balding. I can respect that sentiment to an extent but then why prescribe Minoxidil and schedule a follow-up? I can see myself being dissuaded from using Finasteride but I do not believe it is acceptable to do so under false basis. Addendum: I also recall not being able to get a cost projection before leaving the practice and scheduling the theoretic follow-up appointment? Even this seems a bit... Unethical?

Dr. Lee is a fine doctor but his billing office is incompetent…read more My husband went to see Dr. Lee in his Los Gatos office in April 2024. They billed the wrong code so our insurance did not apply the plan contract price. Took us three phone calls and 8 months to fix the problem. Meanwhile, they kept billing us so we paid in full since we did not know what else to do and don't want to ruin our credit. After insurance finally got the right code to fix the bill in January 2025, we called the billing department for a refund (since we paid in full). No call back. Today, instead of getting a refund, we got a bill saying we owe more money because the bill fails to list the full payments we made. Now we have to call them again. Seriously! No matter how good a doctor Dr. Lee is, it is not worth our time and energy to deal with the billing department. Dr. Lee: you deserve a better billing service!

My twin sister had stage 4 melanoma and nearly died; my cousin had a melanoma cut out of her arm leaving a huge scar. And my mom had a melanoma cut in the early 90's that should have killed her, but it did not. I take my skin care profoundly serious as a result. And I need a dermatologist that does too! Dr. Lee looks very carefully at all my freckles and spots. He is thorough and professional. The Covid procedures for the office are excellent. Masks required. You park and call before coming up. You are asked screening questions about your health. They take your temperature too. All very legit given the pandemic situation we are all in. Stay safe and happy Yelping!
