Saw Dr. Ullman for my eye exam. Staff made the process very easy, and Dr. Ullman walked me through my results. He recommended a different brand of contacts than what I normally got and explained how it would help with my complaint of dry eyes. I appreciate it when a doc takes the time to educate. I have been seeing Dr Ullman for years, since he was on Yale St. at Yale Eye Center. He has lot of experience and lot of common sense when it comes to treatment. He has very nice bed-manners too. He is in a new office now, Eye to Eye on 432 W 19th St. and works only on Wednesday. Three days ago, I realized that I had a stye and it was painful. He was fully booked for the coming Wednesday. However, when his assistant told him that I had a painful stye, he made time to see me at noon! He is an awesome person. So he gave me a good treatment and taught me how to prevent it from happening again. I love that he shares his knowledge and explains things well. I highly recommend Dr. Ullman. read more

When I first walked in, I thought the place had closed years ago. It's not the most beautiful or modern of facilities. That would be my only semi negative sounding thing I have to say. This runs throughout the place by the way. Beyond that, I love this place. Everyone that I encountered working there is super respectful, happy, helpful and seems to be enjoying their role and providing great service. In my two visits to the office, Dr. Ullman has quickly become my favorite eye Dr. ever! Warning: this is not fast food optometry! Dr. Ullman is extremely thorough, chalked full of wisdom an all things eyes and is a pleasure to talk with. You very well could spend more time here than planned, which was a bonus for me, I haven't seen this well or had my eyes feel this good in years. I am reading amazing things about Dr. Ullman himself but unfortunately I did not even get that far. When I called to make an appointment, the new receptionist did not take down my insurance information so I got about three more calls that day asking for information. I was happy to provide that information and I did warn her that she would need to call my insurance office because I have out-of-state insurance, and I provided her with the phone number. When I went in for my appointment the next day, she informed me that she could not pull up my insurance. I asked if she had called the insurance office and she informed me "No we did not," which would have solved the problem to begin with. Then an older woman came and began harshly informing me that "We don't do that here" (as in call insurance companies to verify), she continued to berate me about various other thing regarding the insurance to which my response was simply that all could be figured out if the insurance office was called. I even offered to call. This continued for several more minutes during which I felt extremely uncomfortable and as if I was being yelled at and treated like a child. She walked away to put the information I gave her into the computer and I said "I see that this is a big inconvenience and I think I am going to find somewhere else to go." The woman barked "I have it now" (Meaning it only took those 45 seconds when she went to sit down and enter the number before it came up) I let them know that I didn't appreciate the way that I had been treated and would be finding another place to go. I have NEVER been treated that way by staff somewhere that I was bringing my business. I was really looking forward to going to Dr. Ullman, so close to my house and two friends recommended but unfortunately when you have a horrible interaction with office staff it really ruins the entire experience. read more

From his rotating eye charts ( so you can't cheat) to what some would call great bedside manner, I found him years ago but opted to go elsewhere. I am glad I returned. I came here because it was the closest place to where I live, but I was pleasantly surprised by the care and professionalism with Dr. Ullman. Having been to more than four eye doctors in the past 10 years, I can say Dr. Ullman and his staff have been the best. My vision has changed drastically over the past couple years and they took their time with me and explained what had happened and why certain products would be good for me or not good for me. Very good experience. Very friendly staff. Dr. Ullman is professional, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. I had to bring my 7 month old son to the appointment, and was very concerned about the reaction I would get. Nobody in the office batted an eyelash about the fact that I had a wriggly baby on my lap the entire time. All of the staff welcomed me and my baby with open arms. (Literally! His nurse held my son while I was putting on my contact lenses!) One other important point is that nobody in the office pressured me to purchase frames or contacts from them. I did end up ordering my year supply of lenses from Dr. Ullman since the cost was the same as 1-800-Contacts, but he wasn't pushy at all. That fact alone has driven me away from other optometrists in the past, so I was very pleased about this. I've bounced around from optometrist to optometrist, never really being totally satisfied, but will definitely come back to Dr. Ullman. read more

I love the doctor but everything seemed in disarray my apt was at 130 I was there 5-10 mins early I was the only one in the office yet still waited 20 mins or so the doctor came and got me the tech was on lunch maybe that's what threw everything off I think he was trying to cover her duties but I got moved between 4 different rooms about 3 times eye exams have always taken me less than an hour but this took about 1hr 45mins. The tech that came in after her lunch to perform more tests she was nice to me but everytime the docter said something to her she would mumble "oh my god" and would would snap her answers back at him he is such a nice man it really bothered me that she did that but I can't blame him for that. I will go back just on my day off next time. read more

I had a corneal scratch on my eye awhile back (like two years) and he's the only Optometrist I've met who shot straight with me. He said it was my contact brand that was causing the scratch (I seemed to get one once a year) and not long after that brand was recalled. The only reason I'm giving Dr. Ullman four stars and not five is his front of office. While they were very nice, it wasn't until I spoke with the person that seems to be in charge that we got anywhere with my insurance. It was very frustrating. Once that was handled Dr. Ullman and his vision staff were great. He's the first Dr. that explained to me why my eyes are so very dry. Every other Dr. would just blow me off saying everyone has dry eyes. This was the biggest relief to me, I'm not crazy, they are drier than your average eye. ;) Dr. Ullman has a great "bedside" manner. He's patient, never rushed and informative. I'll continue seeing him for sure. His office and reception staff seem a bit old fashioned, but it's kind of charming for a local Heights Dr. *My Dad was in town and his glasses were incredibly crooked from him sitting on them too many times, Dads. I took him down to Dr. Ullman's and they fixed them right then for free, no questions asked. So wonderful to get service like that. read more

This place was wonderful. Dr. Ullman is very thorough and made sure to explain everything to me that was happening and why I felt any discomfort with my contact lenses. He was nice and he listened to what I had to say when discussing my eye care. I went there for my yearly exam and new contact lenses and it was a great experience. My only negative would be that the office could be refreshed so it doesn't look so old but everything was clean and all technology adn equipment was up to date and worked great. I've never had such a pleasant experience. They were able to fit me in next day when I called. Irma spent time with me helping me to find a pair of glasses that I loved and took a lot of measurements to be sure that they would fit me perfectly. The place looks unassuming at first, but give this optometrist a chance-- he knows what he's doing. I came here as his office isn't too far from where I live. The work is competent and he and his staff are pretty friendly, just be prepared to wait a bit, and when being fitted for glasses/contacts, be prepared to wait for those, too. Price-wise, he is not bad, either. Facility is clean. He is also open on Saturdays, but only til 1 or 2. read more

Had a really good experience here. The staff was helpful and patient. In particular, Dr. Ullman and Rick both seem to have a tremendous commitment to quality and customer service. I came in for a 2pm appointment and expected to be out within the hour but they spent almost a full 2 hours with me - I never felt rushed. Dr. Ullman was friendly and took the time to explain the pictures they took of my optic nerve and answered all of my questions about the wherefore, how, and what without making me feel the least bit rushed (and I have a lot of questions). Rick then spent about an hour helping me find the right pair of glasses. He was infinitely patient with me as we ran a bunch of different scenarios -- frame #1 or frame #2? polycarbonate? titanium frames? spring loaded? He seemed extremely knowledgeable about glasses history and comfort/fits. I usually don't consider buying my glasses at the optometrist since they tend to be more expensive than online outlets, but I'm thinking of making this the exception! The only (small) things I noticed which were less ideal: My first appointment was made, then they canceled on me due to a change in schedule (or maybe they misscheduled the first time) -- but it happens. Also, when I first walked in, the person at the front was sitting in the back area, eating, and just looked at me. Finally after an awkward silence, I announced myself and my reason for being there. I noticed though that she did ask others "How can I help you?" so maybe it was just because she was eating. Finally, I didn't notice Dr. Ullman wash his hands but he did touch my eyes to examine the underside of my lids, and with another staffperson I was not proactively asked to wash my hands before I was told to try on my new contact lenses. read more

Dr Ullman knows his stuff! He is very thorough for the annual eye exam, but explains anything you want to learn about or understand better. His answers are straightforward. I appreciate the fact that he's up on new imaging techniques but also has -- and uses -- some of the older conventional exam tools too. I I had a very good experience with Dr. Ullman's office. The girls up front were very kind and patient in working with my insurance company to get benefits verified. Dr Ullman was extremely thorough and explained all of my eye exam results as he completed them. He gave me several options to consider, in regards to my dry eyes and irritations. I guess the most impressionable part of the entire appointment was when Dr Ullman said he wanted to see me back in 1 month to review my progress and reassess any treatment plans if necessary. I guess it surprised me because I've never had an eye doctor schedule a follow-up appointment after a basic yearly exam, they just send you on your way and hope things worked out for you. All in all I was very happy with Dr Ullman and will keep him as my new eye doctor. read more

Dr. Ullman is a cheerful and a thorough fellow. He took a few extra minutes out of his day to show me the 3d-scans he's made of my macular region and to explain the anatomy of that region. He also gave me a bunch of free eyedrops (and if you buy eyedrops you know they're expensive!). I ended up buying contact lenses from him as well, because the price per pack was very comparable with the online places. So, he's definitely my go-to OD here in houston. read more

Dr. Ullman is the best! I am so glad I found him! He was very caring and conscientious, and patiently tested my vision with various lenses to ensure my prescription would be correct. After years of trying glasses, contacts, and two Lasik surgeries, I can finally see well. I love my bifocal contacts - they fit properly (my last contacts floated off my eye) and I can now tell whether that blurry thing on the floor is a bug or a leaf. The staff is very helpful and professional, and Rick was great explaining the eye tests he was performing. It was definitely worth driving in from Spring, TX, for Dr. Ullman to examine my eyes. Yale Eye Center. Wonderful doctor. So kind and sweet. However, terrible staff and infrastructure. Uneducated on what different insurance companies provide. Modern offices are aware of new services insurance companies provide for the coming year but this office has to be educated by the customer. And you have to repeatedly argue with them to get your point across. They also have no way to digitally send receipts or follow ups to you the way offices that have the system in place can. Have come to this office for 10 years bc the doctor is so nice but the office staff are just too backwards to keep coming here. read more

I absolutely love Dr Ullman. My husband has been a patient of his for 30+ years and now we take our kids to see him. He is very thorough and truly cares about each of his patients. I never leave feeling like just a patient of his but more like a friend. Location is in the heights. Appts are easy to make. You can call and get an appt relatively soon. Nothing is more frustrating than having to wait three weeks to be seen by a dr. I typically go to the med center for all my dr appts, so my expectations are high. Horrible experience. I went because of the reviews and location, but this was definitely not the place for me. The office is not nice. At all. I felt like I had stepped back into the early 80's. I then had to wait and wait and wait. I was there for a routine eye exam and was in the office for over 2 hours! They seemed disorganized. There also seemed to be tension between staff and doctor or maybe he just talked to them like that normally...not respectful. So after this bad experience, I just needed my prescription and order contacts. They didn't even have the most up to date contact samples that I normally use. They did mail directly to my house, but when they arrived, they were the wrong prescription! So then I had to pack up my babies and go back up to the not so nice office and get it corrected. They reluctantly apologized, ordered the correct ones and then charged me the shipping! I will not be back in the future. I ordered the rest of my contacts thru 1800contacts (which were cheaper and quicker), and won't be back. read more

Dr. Ullman changed my life. I have been in contacts for almost 20 years. My husband, who works in the industry, told me to try to see if Dr. Ullman could help me, as he was a leading eye doctor in Houston. I have always switched from different contact brands and had trouble with eye allergies. When I saw Dr. Ullman, he inquired about my challenges and was very thorough. He switched me to daily contacts about 4 years ago and it truly changed my life. He explained why he thought those contacts would be a better option for me and has always done a very thorough eye exam. I've never received this type of exceptional care before. Eye sight is so important. His staff is very nice and helpful when I have picked out glasses and needed to change appointment times.
