If you like to be creative with your eyeglass frames, look no further. I got some readers I loved at the MFAH gift shop and decided to have prescription lenses put in. Lots of places won't work on frames designed for reading glasses. But, as long as you sign a release, Smith's will do it. I love the way my glasses came out and get lots of compliments on them. I've heard about this optician being a favorite in the area. I needed a new pair of glasses so I stopped by Smith's twice, once to look for my frames, and another time to pick up my glasses. I think that this place is fantastic. I felt like I was in great professional yet friendly care when I was choosing my new glasses. They have so many frames, which is a great plus, but I really think that this place shines with their employees. I worked mostly with Carlos, and he was absolutely great in helping me decide on what kind of frame I wanted. He was very attentive to what kind of styles I was interested and disinterested in, and kept offering suggestions of frames until we landed on something that I liked. This hands on experience was great, as in a place where there are hundreds of frames to choose from, Carlos really narrowed it down for me. I paid for half of the glasses up front, and came back when they were ready (about 3-4 days later!) to pick them up. Picking them up was also a very great experience, as Rachel and Carlos helped me out make the frames fit perfectly on my face, as well as give me tips on good glasses care. I was complaining a little bit about the metal nosepads that my frame had, and Carlos went ahead and took them out and replaced them with silicon nosepads in shop on the spot! It felt great to be so taken care of, and I'm pleasantly surprised with the quality of my glasses for the money. All in all, this is probably one of the best opticians offices that I have ever been to. Smith's really makes you feel like your interests are being considered and you are taken care of. I've never seen anything like this place. Not to be confused with not being able to 'see' but because Smith's Opticians really does stand out from a lot of optician offices. Most vision insurance plans cover glasses at least up to $150. Since the typical Pearle Vision, Eye Masters and Vision Source tend to market high-end, designer glasses, I end up still dishing out at least a couple bills for a "nice" pair WITH insurance. I mean, I wear these on my face, of course I want something that's cute *batting eyelashes*. Glasses that are decent, fashionable, frames the face well, inexpensive, sits on your nose correctly, etc.. Frame shopping is serious business! Thankfully, Smith's has made my decision much more difficult in a good way. My sister and I spent a long time trying on frame after frame. It was pretty fun. I managed to find a few that I really liked, turned my head at every angle making sure it looked good (I sound reeeeeally girly right now o_O). So I found my magical pair and I'm in love with them! I called to see how much my lenses would be with my insurance at an optical chain and they quoted me $96. Smith's Opticians charges $40 for a pair of lenses. What the fslkfld;samsk;dlak?! Albeit, they don't do the fancy no-glare, warranty or polarized-yada yada. I don't care for that stuff and I don't have an issue with my lenses thus far. I can seeeeeeeee! -In my best opera voice. Anywho, what I really like is that they have vintage frames in the back. FYI - It's not the type of place that sells up-to-date designer frames. However, if you walk to the back room they have 70's-80's frames. I saw old Dior specs for $75-$150. Seriously? I know people who would pay hundreds more for those so-called vintage specs! THIS PLACE ROCKS!!!! I lost my glasses a month ago and have been wearing contacts. I came in here sick of dry eyes and looking for a pair of cheap replacement glasses. I'm pretty specific about what I wear, and definitely didn't want generic looking frames. I saw reviews for this place on yelp, and came in to look around, not expecting much. WOW! There were a ton of frames that were fun and funky and made from all over the place- like these crazy stained glass looking frames with wood earpieces made by some French guy named Michel and some mother of pearl/leopard frames made by some Argentinian company. They definitely try to find interesting and off the beaten path stuff. Frames ranged from $28 to $200 and there were SO MANY to choose from. Additionally, when I ordered the lenses, I was willing to buy more expensive lenses and the owner actually told me that for my purposes, all those little add ons like light weight and scratch guard wouldn't make that much of a difference. So I got these ridiculously fabulous cats eye frames ($119) and only spent an additional $40 for the lenses. And they look awesome. AND I came in this Thursday, was told they'd be ready by Tuesday, and they were ready early! This Saturday, two days after the order, I have my emergency glasses! If this sounds like they paid me to write this, don't believe me. Just come check the place out for yourself. Will try to post a picture now. read more

Considering my best friend (Carlos) works here, I have to give this place five stars, but I would anyway! Phillip knows everything there is to know about glasses (everything, seriously). I can always always find frames I love, and the prices! It's SO CHEAP. Like, amazingly cheap. I've suggested this place to a ton of people, and it's well worth it, I promise. The location can feel a little sketchy but don't worry. There's a lot with a few spots for easy parking. Recently, they sectioned off the store between modern and vintage styles, which is really helpful for shoppers. I also love the mix of people who come in the store. There's no specific clientele--everyone shops at Smith's! You'll feel comfortable there no matter what you're looking for, and if they don't have exactly what you want, Phillip or Carlos will find them for you and order them as soon as possible, and your order will usually be available in about a week. Also, the store now has a record player in the back with an eclectic mix of music, so have some fun! I love this place, and now that I'm back in Houston I'll be there all of the time (probably organizing the back room, hah). Can't wait to get more and more pairs of glasses! Yes, finally a locally owned, reasonably priced and vintage frame optician! Super selection of vintage frames - new old stock - available for purchase. I could have spent a fortune in the vintage room. And even the new frames they have on display are not your usual run of the mill wire or plastic frames. If you want some cool/hip/out of the ordinary frames and don't want to shell out $700 for them...GO HERE! Glasses don't have to be boring. I was turned down by many opticians when I wanted to get my 'script put in my Grandmother's 1950 cat eye frames. They were just too scared to try. Not here. They seemed honored to be taking care of a family heirloom for me. I have been avoiding progressive lenses because they are just too expensive at other places. I got two pair of frames I already owned with the new progressives for less than other places wanted for one. So the prices are right. Plus they didn't just hand me my new glasses and tell me "thanks". They walked me through my adjustment with the new lenses. Of course it does depend on your prescription. Each time I am in I deal with a different optician. All have been wonderful. The owner talked to me at length about the vintage pair I chose from his collection. This is one of those weird stores that seems to come from some wacky poet's imagination. It's beauty and chaos combined into one little glasses shop. The selection is good, if unpredictable. You'll find some real winners here if you look, and for very reasonable prices. Be careful of the maelstrom of clutter surrounding you, though. I set down my current pair of glasses and almost didn't find them again. The man who runs this shop is a charming and helpful fellow (whose name is not actually "Smith"). He's more organized than he looks; I was afraid he would lose my prescription, but he conducted the whole deal utterly professionally, and mailed my glasses to me in California, charging me only for postage. read more

Very quirky, eccentric place. Crazy disorganized as all get out. The owner, Mr. Brown, not Smith, as opposed to Jones, is very helpful and will offer suggestions as you take in the insanity, but will also give you space. They have a great selection of 70's-80's glasses. Actually from the 70's-80's, and some from the 60's, even down to the 30's. i picked up some Sally Jessy Raphael appropriate specs...and put them down. American Apparel/Nylon Mag buyers/stylists would LOVE this place. I must admit, I have a tendency to gravitate towards specs that may turn me into a Far Side character. Instead, I opted to become an out-sized version of Martin Scorsese. I also got a pair of "upside down" Missoni glasses. They look like I've put my specs on upside down..oh eccentric, batty person that I am. The pricing is quite reasonable for frames and lenses. This is not a chain and he does NOT take insurance. I came in while vacationing in Houston and was impressed with several things... 1. Prices - The prices are VERY reasonable. Even for their more brand name products, so super reasonable. 2. Unique Selection - They have a great selection of unique styles and your hard to find designs. 3. Vintage Selection - They have a huge selection of vintage pieces. The entire back part of the store is dedicated to vintage. 4. Service - Everyone is so friendly, welcoming and super helpful. I wish we had a Smith's in DC. I am very happy with my experience at the shop. The first pair of eyeglasses I bought in June from the shop broke during the process of fitting the lenses (at my old optical place, due to lenses price was cheaper). After 4 months of having no success at finding new frame that would fit my lenses, I came back to this place hoping they would exchange for me ... Fortunately, they did!!! I was helped by a young male employee. He was very attentive and helpful :) I walked out the shop super happy with a free new pair of eyeglasses. Great place to find cool frames. I wanted to change up the look of my glasses, so I got a little chunkier frames than I'm used to. The salespeople were really helpful, and the frames look great. Decent price too, mine were $70 plus the cost of lenses. The back room with lots of vintage, wild-looking frames is a lot of fun. Note: they are not open early. My only minor complaint. They don't open until 10:30 weekdays, 12 pm weekends. read more

I'm split about Smith's. If you don't have vision insurance, or if you're just really into retro, eccentric things, it's a good option for strange finds. I got a pair here end of 2016... the paint on the frame chips a little bit. It is a quirky pair that still works. This year tho I have vision insurance and went to somewhere else instead and with the insurance i paid almost the same amount for high index, anti reflection pair. And my frame is of higher quality. The glasses are also thinner. I understand the health insurance system and the way companies/optometrists charge things can make you want to scratch your head... but sometimes Smith's way is not optimal. It's a fair option if you don't have vision insurance or your insurance covers nothing other than the exam. But you'll limit yourself from eco frame and some of the newer technology with Smith. I hope they continue to be in business tho. read more

Love it. Just the quirkiness that I was looking for. I have been in the market for some new prescription glasses for a minute and I happened to ask a girl at Mad Potter where she got her amazing round dark mauve frames: Smith Opticians. This place was just off Main on Wheeler- I'm surprised I never waltzed into this place to be honest. Carlos and Field were wonderful- I told them what I liked, my conservative work place and my quirky side and they paired me with tons of choices. I fell head over heels for some square, pale sherbert orange frames from the 1920s. I DIE. I highly recommend this place and will check back after I get my frames on Tuesday/Wednesday. read more

Smith's makes me wish I was more outgoing or an artist or something. They have such a fun, cool selection of glasses. I'm especially drawn to the pink, purple, neon, and polka dotted frames. However, my glasses are pretty much a permanent fixture on my face...so I usually opt for something more "classic" (boring, conventional, not noticeable, etc.) - which Smith's has those too, BUT if I was cool, daring, and generally pretty crazy, I'd definitely go for some neon fuchsia frames. I haven't actually purchased anything here, just browsed. But I'm seriously considering making my next glasses purchase here. It's a pretty big deal for me to buy new glasses because I have an extremely strong prescription that can only be filled at Texas State Optical. Which means that if I don't want to get frames from TSO (I don't), I have to buy frames elsewhere and take them to TSO for the lenses. My current pair came from Warby Parker and I love them - they were so cheap (about $85 without prescription lenses) and then my insurance covered a large portion of the prescription lenses. OK, but this isn't a review for Warby Paker...haha, errrr... Anyway, the prices at Smith's seem reasonable. But there are so many options, it's going to be hard to choose. It's also hard to not get distracted by trying on all the FUN (but impractical for my oh so conventional life) frames! Can't wait to go back! read more

I am SUCH a fan of Smith's Opticians. This is (quite possibly) the best frame store in the Houston area. I got my first pair of Smith's frames a few years back, and I was completely amazed at their selection. They have everything from modern vintage, exotic, unique, relaxed, and real vintage glasses. All the colors, shapes, and styles you could imagine. The back portion of their store is literally just vintage frames ranging from many eras. Smith's sells frames and also does the lenses in house. They even sell sunglasses! My first pair here were some 1960's blue cat eye frames that were to die for. Unfortunately they broke from my own wrong doing, but I honestly believe they have something for everyone here. Every style can be found, no joke. The one thing I have noticed about Smith's, which diverts me from being a constant customer is the price. Back when I got my pair a few years ago, the prices were MUCH cheaper it seems. Most pairs are int he $100+ range, even up to the $300. Although I know many of these brands are high quality, it's a little more difficult to find something if you're on a budget. I've been getting my Rx filled here since the 90s. Phillip, the owner, has always been more than helpful with selecting an assortment of frames within the style I'm checking out. On my last visit, I was looking for wayfarers. He dug up close to a dozen that fell under that category. From there, I narrowed it down to clear wayfarers; he closed in on about half a dozen. I then singled out a pair that looked cool and fit my face well. The price of the frames plus Rx came to under $100. At times, I've found frames there that total far less than $100 with Rx included. I've had nothing but luck finding vintage, classic, unique, and novel styles there. I always recommend him to friends. Smith's is one of those places that makes Houston unique. read more

My "intellectual look" needed an update. It's sad to say that I've worn the same pair of glasses for the past 2 years. Unfortunately, I had to visit Eye Care Central on Elgin before my visit to Smith Opticians. In other words, make sure you have your eyeglass prescription ready when you visit. The guys at Smith Opticians are nothing less than polite and professional--even over the phone. One gentleman was kind enough to work with me on selecting the right frames for my face and style. Believe it or not, but he made some really great recommendations. The place is a little dusty, but it offers a vast selection of really great vintage and classic frames that are certain to fit just about anybody's style. The best customer service I have ever experienced anywhere. I came in for a replacement pair and couldn't decide on which pair I wanted. Carlos and a nice bearded man whose name I sadly don't know, were nice and patient enough to give me their opinions on which pair looked best. After ordering an awesome pair of frames Carlos tried his hardest to repair my broken ones. He even let me borrow a set of frames until my new glasses were finished. My prescription is so bad that it usually takes 10-14 days to get a pair of glasses but because their lab is local it only took 2 days. When I went to pick them up Sarah helped me and was sweet enough to email me a catalog that featured super unique frames that they order once a year. I'm so excited to order a pair. I can't say enough great things about this place and the absolutely amazing staff that they employee. read more

Great place! I brought my prescription in on the 7th and they told me it would be 3 to 4 days and it was ready on my birthday (May 9th). Happy birthday to me! I can see! The only thing i must say i did not like is that I was referred to MC Optical by Smith's for my eye exam, which was a downright horror. I recommend going to Sears which is also right in the area. Sears was a much more pleasant experience than MC (just ask for the student discount and he will give it to you and VOILA! $40 eye exam. Just don't be tricked by Sears into getting your glasses there! As any dedicated wearer of glasses knows, it can be a rough road trying to find the perfect pair. I broke my glasses recently and couldn't find any frames that were worth buying anywhere. Finally, at a dance class I saw a girl with super cute frames and she sent me to Smith's with the warning that I shouldn't judge this book by the cover. I went in, gave them an idea of what I wanted, and they pulled boxes of vintage frames from the back for me to look at. I found a vintage and a new set of frames I wanted. The owner took one look at the vintage pair, and said "Hold on, I have another pair in the back I'd like you to try." He was right, the pair he picked looked great. I ended up with two shiny new pairs of glasses! I recommend them to everyone. Essentially- good selection, fast turn around time on the lenses, and wonderful customer service. Don't worry if you don't have someone with you to let you know if your glasses look good, these folks know their business. read more

Drove an hour to get a pair of glasses and they were SO RUDE. Handed me a pair of vintage glasses all bent up. Adjusted them and they were still bent. When I asked the price they said, "What does it say online" So I looked and the guy said , " yeah, whatever it says there" I told the guy how rude that was and that I don't even let my kids talk to me like that. The guy adjusting the glasses was just as bad. Not interested in trying to make the glasses fit well and called me rude for saying something to the guy who was rude to me. Unbelievable. The young man who helped me - I didn't get his name but will update when I go back to pick up my glasses - was super knowledgeable and passionate about frames. He helped me find exactly what I was looking for, plus some things that I never would have thought to look for! They had a huge selection of unique frames and I had a great time trying them on. When it came time to check out I was admiring the funky eyeglass cases they had in a bin next to the counter, and he told me I could pick out any one I wanted to go with my new glasses, cool! The employees at Smith's geek out on glasses. I've never been to an optical store like this before. A pair of glasses is a work of art to these guys, and choosing the right pair is an art, as well. Most "optical philosophy" centers around finding a pair that blends in, whereas these guys believe you should own it and love your choice. If you want a unique look and you're even just a bit open-minded and freespirited, then this is the place for you. Beware, though, that as total glasses geeks, these guys aren't super-interested in the "customer experience." The people who work there are lovely--knowledgeable and helpful when you ask a question, but they aren't likely to come out from behind the desk and offer help unless you ask for it. Also, the lighting is terrible (especially in the wonderful "vintage room") and most of the store's mirrors are slanted, dim, and somewhat out-of-reach. So, why 5 stars? Because finding people who are passionate about their product is so rare, I would give them 6, if 6 were possible. read more

This place would be great if I were still a college student. But as an adult over the age of 23? Not even close. This store feels like it's targeting teenagers and run by teenagers. They definitely have a decent selection of unusual frames at very reasonable prices. However, for a TOOL you'll be wearing on your FACE, possibly every day, I think it's worth it to pay for higher quality. All the frames I tried on here (at least a dozen) felt like $10 sunglasses from a convenience store. Customer service was also very poor. When I first walked in, I wasn't even acknowledged but I chalked it up to a busy Saturday afternoon since they were actively helping a few people check out when I arrived. However, I stayed at least 30 minutes and by halfway through my visit, all the other customers had left. Yet the 2 employees just sat behind the desk, right in front of me, but not even bothering to say hello, much less offering assistance. In other words, I came, was there for half an hour, and left, without either employee saying even one word to me even though they had nothing else to do for at least half the time I was there. I also overheard them talking to customers and sounding very unsure of their information. I could get better advice from Google. And again, when you're shopping for an expensive item you'll be using every day, you really need knowledgeable input rather than someone who sounds like they're guessing. The salesmen also seemed to be focused solely on PRICE, even though VALUE is a much wiser target. Again, not good advice to be giving customers. I was ready to love this store based on the Yelp reviews and my personality. I'm from the Pacific NW, fairly liberal and very young at heart. I like things that are timeless and sophisticated but with a unique twist to keep it modern and interesting. Based on the reviews, this sounded like the kind of funky shop I'd find in NW Portland. I thought I'd spend money here but their products were just ok and the customer service was, literally, nonexistent, so the next time I'm shopping for glasses, I won't even bother to come back. I could've been a good customer as I ended up spending $1,600 for 2 pairs of glasses at a competitor's. Yes, I bought designer frames and complicated lenses at an out-of-network store (so with very little insurance coverage) but since I'll probably have these glasses for at least 10 years (I've had my current pair for 15), I thought the frames and superior customer service were worth it. If you're on an extremely tight budget and don't mind doing all the work yourself, this place might be worth checking out. Otherwise, don't waste your time. read more
