I had the best experience with Rick Jones Pianos. I found their website about a year ago and had been slowly saving up money to buy my first piano. I love that every piano on their website has a video of Rick or another staff member playing the piano and talking about the history, touch, tone, feel, etc. but also the store policies and other FAQs. When I finally had enough money saved and a few pianos in mind I wanted to look at, I headed up to the store, and was greeted by the incredibly friendly staff. They let me know I could walk around and touch and play every piano in the store and they left me alone to fiddle around and I felt so comfortable in making my decision. No one tried to force me into anything, and it really came down to what I was comfortable with. With that being said, you can't beat the prices anywhere. Yes, Facebook Marketplace has "free" pianos, but I couldn't trust those because some have been sitting in garages and untouched for decades, where as Rick Jones has refurbished and taken care of every piano in the store. And free shipping within 100 miles! Anywhere else you would have to pay a minimum of $600 for shipping, and piano movers in my experience are not easy to work with. I have to say I got a great deal on my piano and I'm absolutely in love. I have no regrets and I would definitely recommend Rick Jones to anyone looking for a piano, especially a starter piano if you don't want to spend tens of thousands of dollars. I had an excellent experience buying a grand piano from Rick Jones Pianos. I researched a number of used piano stores in the DC metro area and Rick Jones had by far the best reputation. I made an appointment and ended up staying for 3 hours playing nearly all of the grand pianos because no one had an appointment after me. The staff were friendly and available to answer questions but never put any pressure on me to make a purchase. I came back a week later with my wife and again spent 2-3 hours making sure we had found the right piano for us. In between visits, I called another piano store in the area that had a similar piano for sale just to compare price (Rick Jones posts all his prices on his website; I had to call the other store for this information), and Rick's price was more than 10% lower. Once we finalized our decision, I called and placed the order over the phone (the store had kindly placed the piano on hold for us for 24 hours to make sure no one else bought it while we were deciding). The piano was delivered (included in price) and set up in our living room within 10 days of the purchase. The delivery crew was professional and did a flawless job. About a week or two after delivery, one of the dampers was sticking slightly (a normal result of the piano adjusting to its new environment). I called Rick Jones on a Saturday at 10am and a technician was at my home an hour later. Problem solved and amazing service! Highly recommend Rick Jones pianos! Some pianos were over 30 years old in mint condition with all Original parts. He carries top brands including Steinways and Yamahas. He is located in a nondescript warehouse type building which he owns off of route 1 near IKEA. We got an excellent deal. His pianos come with a 10 year warranty and you are able to have a lifetime credit of the price you paid for piano when you trade in your piano for a higher model. I recently decided to upgrade from my old digital keyboard to the real thing, and visited Rick Jones Pianos to see how much variation was out there in terms of touch, feel etc. at my price point. I spent almost 3 hours in the showroom playing 20+ different pianos repeatedly. I also visited another shop in the area on the way back, and the difference between them and RJ was night and day. The other place didn't have labels or price tags on their pianos, the keys were filthy on almost every piano I played, several were out of tune, buzzing actions, etc. By contrast, at Rick Jones I mentioned a sticking key and the piano tech (Sam) immediately came over and spent 30 minutes fixing it. Everything was in tune and beautifully maintained. These guys are the real deal. I ultimately ended up going with a Kawai upright from the 90s. I commented that the bass seemed a little too mellow for my taste and the shop punched it up for me, no charge. Rick Jones even offered me Labor Day sale pricing even though it was still almost two weeks away! However, I live in a fourth-floor walk-up apartment, and was nervous whether the "free delivery" to DC really would be free in my case. The first piano moving company showed up unprepared for stairs and told me the only way to deliver would be with a crane (yikes). I called around and ultimately went with Johnson's Piano Moving, whose fee Rick Jones generously offered to split with me even though it was understandably higher than your standard no-stairs delivery rate. That's before I met my wife, that's before we had two kids. Now the kids had played the Kawai for many years, and we decide to upgrade to a Steinway. This is a testimony of Rick Jones Piano's upgrade policy, it is really easy to upgrade, and it is really a promise that last (for me it's over 20 years already). I bought my first piano from Rick Jones about 8 years ago--had a Yamaha upright (for which they gave me a reasonable trade-in) and purchased a Yamaha C3. I loved that piano but we downsized and moved from MD to CO last fall so I went back to Rick Jones and explained the size piano that the house would accommodate (baby grand). They gave me a full trade for the Yamaha and I bought a used 1952 Steinway baby grand (S). In addition to the trade-in, I paid a few thousand dollars more and $1500 to ship it to our new house. The hitch was that we sold our MD house in September but our CO house wasn't done until mid-December. No problem! They held onto the new (to me) Steinway and it arrived at our new house on December 15. The mover was GREAT. He called in advance and I told him that my big concern was getting the piano into the 2nd floor loft. My sister had brought a local piano mover over to the model home and we were fairly sure it would fit. I sent the mover pictures and dimensions and he was very optimistic. The day that piano came they got it upstairs beautifully. I can't say enough good things about Rick Jones piano--both buying experiences were very low-key. They let you walk around and play any piano you want and if you forget music, they have lots around you can borrow. They answer your questions and it's no pressure. They were exceptionally helpful both in terms of the trade, what I wanted in a piano, and in engaging a very competent mover. The new piano looks beautiful and has a beautiful sound. I had a great experience buying an upright piano at Rick Jones recently. While I am a piano teacher, I'm not an expert on piano construction. I have my own preferences on tone, and I know how much space I have in my apartment (not much), but I don't know a ton about the various brands out there. I came by to browse when my old piano was declared beyond repair by the tuner. The person who helped me out put ZERO pressure on me, either to purchase, to go over budget, or to hurry up. I spent a full hour playing various uprights (and a few vintage Steinway baby grands, just for fun) until I settled on the one I wanted. The sales person was busy tuning another piano for a good half hour while I played bits of the same song over and over on different pianos. He pointed me in the direction of a few he thought I would like, explained things to me without being condescending (which I had experienced from another salesperson elsewhere recently), and in the end said I'd made a good choice. I got a 1980s Kawai for a great deal - the case was a little knicked from having been in a school for years, but the parts that you need to be in good condition were perfect. The movers were also great, they took away my old piano and brought the new one in and were very professional. And I also liked Bill Baker, the tuner they gave me a free first tuning with. The piano sounds great and I am really happy with my purchase. Buying a used piano can feel like buying a used car, and I know some of my students' families have been swindled at other dealers unfortunately. Rick Jones is a very large piano dealer, refurbisher and refinisher. If you are a lucky person who can afford to have them refurbish a Classic Steinway for you, well they do those, custom order. But if you're like me and just want to own a piano of your own, there is really no reason to look any further than Rick Jones. They sell pianos from their location to all 48 contiguous states. I know because I just bought one and I live in Arizona. Why didn't I buy a piano locally and who in their right mind would buy a piano over the Internet are questions I get a lot. Well, frankly the local piano dealers left a lot to be desired, almost as bad as used car salesmen; and when I went online I was able to view far more options with a better guarantee. A local dealership wasn't going to give me a 10 year warranty on the piano or the ability to upgrade with another one, applying the purchase of this one to that sale. I wasn't getting the bench with it at a local dealer that would be extra and I wasn't going to get reimbursed for a free tuning after my piano acclimated to it's new home if I bought locally. A local dealer didn't have any pianos in Rosewood and Rosewood is gorgeous. The local dealer wanted to push me into a piano they wanted off their floorspace, not whatever piano *I* liked. How can you buy online something people feel you have to touch...well, Rick Jones made me feel much more secure when I listened to the several pianos they had. I could tell which ones sounded right and I trusted their commentary on the action, etc. I read reviews of their company from many places online and the word that came through (even from their competitors) was Integrity. Then the prices come into account as well. All pianos become "used" the moment after you buy one new. Piano's last for generations, so why buy a 2008 when a 1985 is beautifully conditioned, maintained and is still mint? The cost is THOUSANDS less and you don't kill any new trees. My piano new would be near 11 thousand dollars. The same piano (bench included) but obviously not made yesterday, from Rick Jones was $2198.00. Seriously. That baby went straight into my livingroom! They accept credit cards for the full purchase of your piano, not limiting you to only a bit part. They prefer if you come to the showroom, but understand if you can't visit. They use quality piano shippers to get your piano to your location and they pay half that cost too. In my case they used Modern Piano Movers. They called 48 hours in advance and they arrived early. The two guys were professional, courteous, quick and pleasant. I guess when all you do is deliver pianos you're going to get very good at it. My piano had a long trip, but if was beautiful when it was unloaded. They didn't mar my bamboo floor, and the Rick Jones had even added four felt bottom caster cups to my order. SWEET. Most of Rick Jones Piano users send their compliments to them via email and some are readable on their website, and you can see that their walls are full of compliments too; but I can't believe I am the first to YELP them! I feel proud to do it. I am so impressed with their whole operation. I have called them and I have gotten the owner or another high level employee at the phone on the first ring and they are never to rushed to speak to me and answer my queries. We were impressed when we walked into Rick Jones Pianos. We drove 4 hours from Manhattan, NYC, in February of 2014 looking for a piano for our daughter (we purchased a lovely Yamaha baby grand). The reason why I chose Rick Jones Pianos is because they had lots of positive reviews. They also had a large piano collection and decent prices with a good warranty (a 10 year warranty and life-time trade in with full price). But we have to call the delivery crew to come back (crew came back around 11pm) because the piano legs were installed in reverse order. I called Rick Jones Pianos for multiple reasons and the customer service is outstanding. From the first time my wife and I visited Rick Jones Pianos, we knew this place was different from all the other piano stores we'd visited in the past. To me, this isn't just a piano store: these guys are artisans, technicians and artists who are clearly passionate about the work they do and take great pride in it. You can see it in the quality of the pianos on display, and you can hear the depth of their knowledge when they talk about the details and intricacies of piano work, whether it be playing, tuning, refurbishing, rebuilding, etc. And on top of that, they're a really nice group of people! For my wife and I, there was no reason to consider any other piano store - as far as we're concerned, it's the best piano shop in town (and we visited almost every piano shop in our area). Great selection, customer service before and after the sale, and pricing on virtually any style and sound piano you like. I recently took delivery of my lovely Yamaha baby grand and am still intrigued with its lovely tone. Before choosing this beautiful instrument, my family and I spent a couple hours playing everything I liked/was curious about in the concert/ baby grand section-Yamaha, Kawai, Baldwin, Steinway...catered to by patient and well-informed staff, who answered my barrage of questions with Southern grace and charm. When the owner heard I was a veteran, he comped my order of an upgrade artist bench and gave an additional $200 discount to the already reasonable purchase price. Rick Jones tuned the piano before it was delivered but offers another free tuning with every purchase to make sure your instrument is at perfect pitch and timbre. Their delivery crew was quick, competent and professional and made sure I was happy with the placement of the baby grand in the conservatory of my new home. I will be a lifetime customer. I purchased my first piano from them maybe 15 years ago? I grew up playing and finally had a little money saved and all I wanted was a Kawaii. I figured I wouldn't be able to afford much, but I walked out with the piano of my dreams - a full upright grand gorgeous rich sounding satin ebony finish Kawaii. I adored that piano. Then, we moved and the space in our new house was just a little too small. It dwarfed the room and the finish didn't fit the style of our house. A few months ago I decided I wanted to find a smaller upright or console, but I was adamant I wanted another Kawaii of similar quality sound, and I wanted a mahogany, teak or walnut finish. I wanted to somehow downsize physically but with the same or better actual quality. If you know pianos, you know what I was looking for was a bit of a tall order, but Rick understood and came through for us. Once again, I have a piano I love with beautiful sound (the tuner remarked on how buttery mellow it is-it is really unique tone, nice deep Kawaii bass but very mellow) but it fits the room in size and finish. Rick is really great to work with. Someday I'll finally have enough room and money for a grand or baby grand, and I will 1000% spend that money here. read more

Rick Jones Pianos is as good as it gets indeed. Their inventory is well selected and in top condition. Their prices and terms are the best anywhere. The staff is top notch and they use authentic quality parts. Their workshop is an open area between showrooms and if they are not too busy they might answer a question by showing you a part or explaining a repair right at one of the work tables. I have been a pianist all my life, trained at Catholic University and Juilliard, and teach and perform regularly. I have frequently consulted with schools and churches to purchase pianos. I found out about Rick Jones in about 1997 while shopping with a church's hard-earned donation money in hand. Upon learning more and comparing with other sources, I stopped looking elsewhere for all time. I have spoken to piano technicians who agree with me that Rick Jones's instruments are in top condition; members of his staff are guild-certified and have long histories as a team. The store also contracts excellent piano movers, and coordinates free followup-tunings with local technicians. I was fortunate to conduct two separate transactions with Rick Jones this year: I consigned a 1974 Yamaha U7 upright from my parents' house in Florida, which Rick sold in a few weeks; also then I purchased my own dream piano, a 1987 Steinway model M. What else could I do with my fine but older upright that served me through high school - in a smaller city - craigslist would not do that piano justice, it deserved to be handled by Rick. Where else would it receive a cross-country move, any needed adjustment, widespread advertising, and find an appreciative home? And then where else could I find that amazing Steinway grand in barely used condition, for a price under half of a new one? I felt each transaction was fair and ethical and that I was treated professionally and with kindness. The staff and Rick took time to help and discuss every question. My husband and I went twice to Rick Jones piano store to scope out a piano and we were so impressed by how pleasant and knowledgeable the staff were. They gave my husband a very technical presentation on piano mechanics (which he loved) and gave me advice on softening the sound of a piano. They let us play around on the pianos for as long as we wanted and we felt no pressure to buy or get out of the store. I purchased a 50" upright Kawai from Rick Jones in 2007 when I lived in Pittsburgh. I was attracted to the reasonable prices for quality Kawai and Yamaha pianos that would have been out of my price range if I purchased "new". I also was interested in their lifetime trade-in policy where you can credit your original purchase price towards the purchase of any subsequent piano. I admit I was doubtful about whether they would honor this when I first purchased, but now it is 3 years later and I am close to purchasing a new Kawai 6' grand piano and can credit my entire purchase price to save me even more money off of RJ's already low prices for such a quality piano. Not only that, but Rick Jones deals with his customers personally, and he helped me out in a tricky situation. I was moving from Pittsburgh to San Francisco and didn't have a place for my piano initially. I knew I wanted to trade-in the upright eventually, so I spoke to him about my situation and he took back my upright (free return shipping as well), and sent me a credit certificate that I could use when I was ready to get my grand. I am now about to exercise that certificate and again Rick has been extremely helpful and forthcoming about his business practices. He is working with me to bundle shipping with some other San Francisco area customers to cut down on the shipping costs. I think some of Greg W's concerns are valid, but he doesn't appear to have purchased or even visited Rick Jones's warehouse to try out the pianos, so I don't think his rating is justified. As far as "risk" in warranty, it clearly states that Rick Jones will reimburse a local Registered Piano Technician should there be any issue with your piano, and if you read the reviews on their site it appears those situations are rare but in the few cases that occured RJ has been true to their policy. I had no issue getting my first piano tuning reimbursed from a RPT in Pittsburgh (another perk of buying from RJ). I did purchase site unseen based on the videos and conversations I had with Rick Jones and Paul. I am no expert about pianos but have played classical piano since I was 8 years old and I always enjoyed my upright immensely. My piano tuner in Pittsburgh was very impressed by my Kawai and was interested to refer his other customers to Rick Jones. I am a very happy customer. read more

I just called there to try and sell some pianos I have for sale. The gentleman who answered the phone said he would connect me to "Rick". I was connected and all I got was rude and more rude and hurried off the phone. I was cut off just about every time I tried to speak. I was then told he was too busy and to email him. I would have emailed him initially had the form on their website allowed me to list more than one piano. The reason why I was calling was so that I could just ask if there would be interest in buying seeing I am far away. I won't be emailing or calling again. It is ok if he isn't interested but no reason to be rude. Love this place! WOW'd us the minute we walked in. Once the hubs saw the "Please touch everything" sign, we knew immediately this was our place lol ^_^ Met the owner Rick, really cool guy. Made us feel at home, answered all our questions and concerns. Purchase & delivery were also a breeze. Came right on time!! Though the movers had some trouble getting up our flight of stairs, and the hubs had to help the 3 gentlemen.. our piano eventually made it to its destination Great place!! I live in Los Angeles, but every time I'm in the DC area I stop by Rick Jones piano. They have great values on classic Steinway pianos and are gracious enough to let anyone stop by and try them out. I knew I was in a special piano store when I saw a sign that read "please touch everything". I've been in other stores that keep people away from the Steinway pianos unless they really think they can make a sale. One day when I buy a classic Steinway I will have it shipped from Rick Jones piano to Los Angeles. read more

We did a lot of shopping around in the MD area - so glad we took time to stop in at Rick Jones'. We called ahead to see that they would have a few different used pianos we could look at and he was real honest over the phone about what he had in stock. We were able to try out 8 different pianos within our specifications and finally settled on a terrific one. Like most of the dealers out there, he includes a warranty for parts and labor, which transfers to the new buyer should you sell it on your own. He only uses one of the 12 best professional piano moving companies to deliver and expects the same should you sell it on. They do a tuning in house before they send it, then pay for another to be done after the piano has had time to adjust at your home. Good information, good set up, willing to negotiate and the price listed includes everything - tax, delivery, bench, tuning, warranty. Plus, they guarantee a specific amount for trade in if you decide to upgrade at a later time with them. Perfect for if your kids improve and you decide you can invest more in an even nicer piano. We will definitely be back should we ever decide to upgrade! We probably went to 5 different places and we felt that his prices, service and willingness to share his knowledge and opinion on pianos was the best town! 5/6/14 - just wanted to add: You also get a first in-home tuning after the piano has had a chance to be in your home and adjust. We were allowed to choose who we like, but they also had recommendations and would pay for the tuning. We were very satisfied with the guy they recommended for our area. Our 3 kids are banging away on the piano every day and it's still holding up extremely well. A great purchase! For those who know nothing about pianos, you could also purchase the book 'The Piano Buyer's Guide' for more insight, but honestly, I felt like we got what we needed after simply talking with various dealers.
