I have always wanted to have something from Ricks bakery. My boyfriend ordered me a carrot cake for my birthday. Such a thoughtful gesture! The cake itself was lacking in every way but looks. There were maybe 3 nuts in the pieces we had and the carrot pieces were few and far between. It was a spice cake, not a carrot cake and it was very disappointing. I will never order a cake from here. I think this is probably the most overhyped place in Fayetteville. While I was living in Arkansas all you would hear about is how amazing Ricks is. Is it a decent bakery? Yea. Is it hyped up to be the best bakery you will find in your entire life? Yep. The reality is, its an average bakery that cooks for the masses. Everything I have eaten there has either been drenched in frosting, or covered in glaze. You could cover a raw trout in frosting and it would be alright. The real unfortunate experience was the cake that we ordered for a birthday. It wasn't a multi tiered wedding cake or anything, a simple two layered cake. All we asked was that it would be half chocolate, and half white cake. The lady that took our order had such an arrogant demeanor, that we were sure that she could not possibly botch the order. Of course when we got the cake, the entire thing was chocolate. Not the end of the world, but if you are going to act like your store is the reigning champion of Cupcake Wars on Food Network, at least get the damn order right. Head down the road to Briar Rose, you wont regret it. read more

I ordered a cake that was decorated nicely. The cake lacked taste. It was clearly made from a cheap mix because it was bright pink and had tiny bright red "strawberry bits". For a bakery that has such a great reputation and the cost, it is unacceptable they use a cheap cake mix that lacks taste except for a slight artificial flavor. It was also very dry, as if it was baked two days before I picked it up. The chocolate icing tasted like crisco and was barely sweet and had no chocolate flavor. Obviously it was the cheap icing which comes in a white plastic tub. If you want delicious cake, Bliss Cupcakes is where you should go. A friend recommended this place, so I went. I wasn't into sweets, so I looked at the soups and other food. I waited for a while for someone to help me and finally a girl with glasses reluctantly came up to the register. I asked what the ingredients were in one of the soups. The girl started laughing and made a face. I said, well if you don't know the ingredients what does the soup look like. She made faces of disgust and made fun of me, telling me that its regular homemade food. I left and could hear her laughing and making fun of me when I walked out. This is a pretty standard bakery for me, I am not sure what all the hype people give to this place is all about. I went and got a sticky bun, cinnamon roll and sausage roll. The girl working behind the counter was friendly and I appreciated that. The sticky bun was very average thus three stars. The actual roll itself was a little dried out. The caramel-gooey goodness was spread a little thin for me. If there was a saving grace for this it was that the sticky bun was pretty loaded with pecans. The cinnamon roll was about the same. The actual roll itself was somewhat dried out. It definitely didn't explode with cinnamon flavor and while the roll was covered in icing, I thought it was a touch bland with flavor. I read where people said you have to try the sausage roll. Ok, so I made sure and got one. It's nothing more than a 3" cheddar hotdog wrapped in some bread. Absolutely nothing special about that at all for me and I definitely did not see the hype there. I grew up in Fayetteville and always went to Rick's. I asked my mom to order a King's Cake with cream cheese filling. I was first confused by the packaging. It looked like it was prepackaged somewhere else and frozen. My mom said she was assured it was fresh. First, there was hardly any icing on the top but it had A TON of sprinkles. The cake part was dry and so was the cream cheese. I tried to heat it up (30 seconds) to help the cheese soften but the sprinkles started smoking and it made it even more dry. I was so disappointed, definitely the worst King's cake I've had. I don't think it was fresh either. I won't completely give up on Rick's but I'll buy my King's cakes elsewhere. read more

I will never order from them again !! They are rude and obviously think their cakes are special. I ordered an 8 inch square bday cake custom. Nothing too special , chocolate with ganache frosting , for my daughters 30th bday. $80 later and already at the party the cake was cut and it was white! This was after more than 5 phone conversations with the designer!! I've given them my business for 50 years but will no longer refer them to friends or family!! Harps does a better job at a much more reasonable price and they treat you with respect! I have had Ricks employees be rude before, including those in charge, but this takes the " cake"!!! read more

This is an odd way to start a 5 star review, but actively try to avoid Rick's. Why? Cause i'm fat enough already, damnit. Every review on here that says the sausage rolls are awesome is wrong. They are understating it. I'm a serious foodie, and a fat man, and they are the Best. Sausage rolls. I've. Ever. Had. If my waste line and grad student budget could take it, i'd be in here once a week, cramming sausage rolls and donuts. Cause they're awesome too. Also, house made fudge... You know what? If you find something here that isn't awesome, let me know. I imagine i'll be waiting awhile. Two other things to mention: The store has all sorts of stuff to buy, like classic lunch boxes, coffee mugs (got a nerdy star trek mug!) and razorback stuff, along with party decorations and seasonal decorations. And while i didn't see it when i scanned the reviews, it should be noted that Rick's is a good place to buy fresh coffee. They sell by the pound, both whole bean and ground, and they have some very, very nice blends. So even if you aren't in the mood for a delicious baked good, you can pop in for a quality coffee, or to take some to make at home. read more

I'm sorry to hear of one persons unfortunate experience. :-( I've been going to Rick's for at least 7 years now, maybe longer. I've never had a bad visit, unless you count all the sugar-related tummy aches I've inflicted upon myself with their tasty products. If you are local, I'd suggest "liking" their Facebook page.. That is where they announce their $3 doughnut box special... You pay 3 bucks for a box and they cram it full of doughnuts.. Sure, this happens on occasion when they need to move inventory to keep it fresh, but who cares.. For $3 you can be the office hero. There are also tons of photos of cakes on their Facebook. Ricks consistently churns out pretty and tasty cakes/pastries/sandwhiches... I'm a creature of habit, so I've not tried a huge variety of the pastries, but what I've had has been great. If you've got a hankering for cake, but no good excuse to buy one, go grab a traditional cupcake or better yet- a cup-o-cake.. The cup contains cake shavings/chunks layered with their OMG icing. If it's time for a birthday or special occasion and you've procrastinated or don't need a pricy designer/custom cake, drop in a buy one of the ready-made cakes. There are a variety of sizes and decor to choose from and they always offer to add a custom greeting. The pricing on the basic double layer round (in choc or white cake) ready-made brings your total to $20.01....can't beat that!! We get them for small family birthdays and they always feed 7-8 with plenty to spare. Don't forget, they also have adorable "greeting card" (mini) cakes... These are a little pricy, since they are basically one serving, but they are so darn cute. Everyone raves about the sausage rolls and they are super yummy.. They even offer jalapeño and cheddar ones! Lunch is good! specials or lunch deals are served with a free piece of CAKE! If you find yourself in town and needing to boost your blood sugar, head on over to Rick's.. Stepping inside of Rick's is stepping into a floured and sugared wonderland. The pastries, cookies and pies all look great. The cream horns and the nutty buddies (cream horns dipped in chocolate and nuts) were my favorite sweet treats in Fayetteville. They also make great muffins but I found some of their pastries to be dry. Come here during Christmas and see all of the beautiful cookies. The prices are a little steep and some of the goods are lacking; hence 4 stars. read more

I've really tried liking Rick's Bakery because it's such an institution in Fayetteville, and the NWA area, but I'm finding it lacks a "wow" factor deserving of 4 stars. My biggest gripe is that their red velvet cake has a buttercream frosting, instead of a cream cheese frosting. That's such a big no-no in my book, so I'm going to have to pull my NYC snob card here and say that I expected a Southern bakery to do red velvet better than Magnolia, Sprinkles, Crumbs, and my former cupcake lady from Montvale, NJ. There are a variety of cakes in varying diameter and height, and although the cakes are moist, the frosting always falls short of being the true "icing on the cake". I didn't bother trying their cheesecake, because really, no one does it better than my old Brooklyn favorite, Junior's original. The cookies and pastries are OK. I've found that Bliss Cupcakes do a way better red velvet, so I'm getting my fix from them, just up the road by the NWA mall. For now, ordering online from Goldbely also helps a great deal. read more

This bakery definitely has a wide variety of options, is clean, and deceivingly large. When you walk in you are assaulted with the smell of sweets. There are fun and kitschy items that one can buy like cute cupcake t-shirts and coffee mugs. They have everything from cookies, to donuts, to sausage rolls, to cupcakes. Their cupcakes are gi-normous and are only like $2! Cupcakes here in Chicago could run you anywhere from $3.50 or more so I was ecstatic to try our purchase:Bailey's, chocolate peanut butter, and red velvet. My husband said the sugar cookies we bought were pretty good, but I wasn't too impressed by the cupcakes. There was gobs of frosting, but it was a bit unnecessary. The cake was a little too crumbly and fell apart, but at least it wasn't dry. I do have to say it was definitely better than the first bakery we visited on our trip. read more

That being said, Rick's has fantastic savory sausage rolls and cake donuts, and their cake decorating (which you can watch live) is awesome. Definitely the place to go in NWA for custom cakes--they'll never disappoint. Whether I'd want to stuff my face with them is another matter.
