I went in to check it took 10 minutes to find and at some point, they looked kind of panicked that they didn't actually know where it was. Finally, three months later, I called to check and the owner calls me leaves a message that they misplaced it in another pile and it has been ready, they just didn't call. Finally as I pay $120 for a slight adjustment the girl tells me if I use a credit card they are going to pass the service charge onto me. This is absolutely insane for a business that charges an exorbitant amount of money for their jewelry. She argued with me trying to educate and Millenialsplain to me why they were passing the cost on to me. I understand there is a service charge with a small business, but this is an establishment that has been in Chapel Hill for a while. Shame on you for bad business practices!

It's about a 40 minute drive from downtown Raleigh NC without traffic, but only 25 minutes from Chapel Hill or downtown Apex, NC. Any direction you drive to Pittsboro from you cross beautiful country side, forests, hills and rivers, and coming from the East, (Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, Fuquay Varina), you're in real luck, you get to cross over Jordan Lake twice. Pittsboro retains its small town USA feel, and the Joyful Jewel is just across the street from the historic Chatham County Courthouse which houses a historical museum open 2 - 3 times a week. But the Joyful Jewel is open 7 days a week. I have visited hundreds of times over the 12 years I have been living in central North Carolina because I so enjoy walking about the store, as if it were a museum, and taking in the colors, imagination, creativity and inspiration. Artists take turns in the store, so you get to meet an artist whose work is there. Mariah Wheeler is the owner, with her husband DG Chandler. Both are jewelers, but work in other forms as well. The affordability of art and fine crafts is one of the best discoveries for me, making a visit to the Joyful Jewel even better than a museum, since I may be able to take home the piece of art that really speaks to me. And if you're looking to learn more about local artists, Mariah is very well connected, not only to artist who paint, and potters, and glass artists, but also local writers, poets and musicians. I've had this business create a ring for me and repair a ring for me. I described what I wanted and…read moreasked for an estimate and a drawing before the work was done. The jeweler did the work without giving me either. I didn't like that he took it upon himself to decide what I'd like without talking with me as agreed. I did like this ring. The repaired ring is another story. I asked that the prongs be tipped because the stone was loose. The repair took weeks longer than promised. When I got the ring back, I saw that the jeweler had again made a decision without consulting me first. Instead of tipping the prongs as agreed, he created a new setting and a new leaf probably because the ring was damaged during the repair. The new leaf did not match the original, and the jeweler insisted it was the original, all while the original leaf and leftover gold from the repair sat in a bag on the counter between us. Worse, the setting was crooked. The jeweler insisted it had always been like that. I told him I'd worn the ring for 40 years and it was never like that. I spent six months trying to find someone to repair the damage, but no one would touch it. Finally, a friend of the jeweler's convinced me to take it back to him, and he agreed to repair it free of charge. The setting was straightened somewhat, but it has since crumbled, and the ring is no longer wearable.

Depending on when you stop in, one or the other will be in the shop but both are versed in the wares offered by the other. If one can't answer a question, she'll be honest about it instead of making something up. Truthfulness with no sales hype is always good. Although the clothing side promotes itself in its name as "New Karma for Old Threads", I didn't really see it. I suppose because some of the jeans look worn and the clothing has that soft well-washed appearance, it might lead to thinking they've been repurposed. They're not. Cute, comfortable, and with that worn look that whispers "old" but to someone familiar with the brand actually says "not cheap". Happily it's not screaming "outrageous," either. The clothes look cute, comfortable, and with more than meets the eye. The jewelry side (Jewelry by Monnda) is equally interesting. Although most of it was not my particular style, I still appreciated the artisanship that went into it. There are some beautiful pieces. Some things made using materials already cut; others made from the base materials give a full picture of the jewelry/metal-smith's work. Silver, copper, some gold, precious stones: everything you'd expect. On this particular day, I think she was holding a class, but she and her student (?) let me behind the counter to see the in -process design and answered questions. Fascinating stuff.
