I just picked up a ring that was resized that originally they told me would take three weeks to do. It ended up taking three months. I went in to check it took 10 minutes to find and at some point, they looked kind of panicked that they didn't actually know where it was. Finally, three months later, I called to check and the owner calls me leaves a message that they misplaced it in another pile and it has been ready, they just didn't call. Finally as I pay $120 for a slight adjustment the girl tells me if I use a credit card they are going to pass the service charge onto me. This is absolutely insane for a business that charges an exorbitant amount of money for their jewelry. She argued with me trying to educate and Millenialsplain to me why they were passing the cost on to me. I understand there is a service charge with a small business, but this is an establishment that has been in Chapel Hill for a while. Shame on you for bad business practices! read more

If you choose to do business here, make sure that you get ALL agreements in writing. When I had William Travis rebuild my wife's rings, I was promised that servicing the rings (tightening stones, etc.) would be free. Apparently the owner does not remember that conversation. I should have had him put his words in writing. My issue is not a product quality issue, it's an honesty issue. If you're buying jewelry in Chapel Hill, go to Wentworth & Sloan instead. The absolute worst service I've ever received from a business that claims to be "classy". I was ignored while looking around and watched an older gentleman walk around fidgeting, scowling, and acting odd to say the least, then run to the bar and make himself a drink without ever acknowledging me. I was later told by an employee that the person was the owner, William Travis. I spoke briefly about upgrading and designing a new engagement ring but the associate didn't have a lot of experience and couldn't offer much advice. I asked to speak to the owner but he refused to talk to me. The associate said he was too busy to have time to deal with me. I was appalled with him and his lack of care to help a potential client. Later on after we had left, a few friends of ours told us to avoid that store because they owner had a horrible reputation in the jewelry industry and is known for stretching the truth on most anything he says just to make a dollar or impress someone. I will be taking my business elsewhere to a more reputable jeweler that would appreciate my business. I have had positive experiences at William Travis Jewelry in the past but after today I will not return and would never recommend them again. I dropped off my watch to get the battery changed. They said it would be ready in about 15 minutes. I returned and was told that my battery was fine but that my watch was not working. I was quite upset since the watch was working fine when I dropped it off. They were not able to fix the watch and would not do anything about the fact that they were the ones to cause it to stop working. The woman I worked with did not have any customer service perspective. She said there was nothing they could do and would not compensate me for the value of the watch. I find this totally unacceptable and will never return or recommend their services in the future. read more

Every time I've purchased jewelry it's been for my girlfriend, and every time I seem to spend forever trying to find something beautiful and unique, yet simple enough to be worn frequently. They were sensitive to the occasion and price range, and really wanted to help me find the right piece. In the process they told me a bit about why they are different, and what makes their items special. Much of what they feature is original, and most of it is very wearable. Their selection offers a broad range of pieces from earrings to necklaces and beyond. I found their prices fair and product to be of the highest quality. I've always known I wanted a green stone, but assumed my only option was an emerald. I had a friend with a sapphire who informed me that sapphires come in most colors and are only slightly less hard than diamonds. BOOM! Months of searching began. I looked at so many websites trying to find a green sapphire I wanted. They were too blue, too yellow, too small, too everything but right. On a whim, when meeting a friend for lunch at University Place, I thought, let me check William Travis! I wonder if they have any green sapphires. I walked in and asked and low and behold a TRAY of green sapphires came out. Green sapphires are rare and not a hugely popular stone, so I was in shock. Not only did they have the exact stone I wanted, they had a few different cuts for me to choose from. I found the PERFECT stone, exactly what I wanted there after searching for months. We had discussed designing our own ring and were able to sit down and discuss what that process would look like. We're not going to be doing that part until January, but we were able to get my beautiful stone set in a solitaire setting until we do the design. I am so happy with my gorgeous ring and perfect stone. The selection of colored stones at William Travis is incredible. I went multiple places and got the same response "I'm having trouble finding a green sapphire." "I can't find a green sapphire that color/shape/size." This was not a problem at WT. First, an apology, to William Travis Jewelry and to anyone who read my recent review posted on Facebook and the Yelp page for the business: I screwed up--big time. The review I posted for William Travis Jewelry was not meant for them, but for Wentworth & Sloan Jewelers. It is no excuse for my mistake, but I was new to the mall in which both businesses are located; I didn't note the name of the store before I left the mall, but felt sure I had found the correct store when at home I looked for the store on-line. My oversight caused me to ding a store that did not deserve to be dinged, and I regret the mistake (which I have since corrected--you may find the properly-posted review on the Wentworth & Sloan pages where I meant my review to go). Second, I learned of the mistake when the owner of William Travis Jewelry messaged me. I called him expecting an unpleasant exchange, but Travis could not have been more understanding and friendly. He understood how I made the mistake, and forgave me for the mistake. That is to say, he behaved as someone who had aced Customer Service 101 would behave. My rating for William Travis Jewelry is 5 stars, not because I have done business with them, but because of the way the business calmly dealt with an issue I alone caused. While I have not previously done business with William Travis Jewelry, I will do so, and I will highly recommend others patronize the business. This place is amazing! My now husband and I both purchased each other's engagement rings from here. Both of us were super impressed with the level of service, knowledge and the finished products. While we didn't get anything too customized, his ring was Lashbrook that I added extra items to, and I was very happy. And an example of how great the customer service is, I noticed that the inscription had a wrong letter when I picked up his ring, and without flinching they immediately contacted the company and got it fixed within a week. I had a jewelry modification project done here recently. I will not go back here again. The staff seems more interested in selling new jewelry than they are in modifying my pre-existing jewelry. The price that was charged seemed high for the very little that they had to do to the project. Also, in the finished product, the length of the chain on one side of the centerpiece is 1/4" longer than the chain on the other side, making it slightly lopsided. I will not bother going back to ask them to re-do it because it is just not worth going through their rude-ish sales staff. read more

Not at WTJ, they make it a very pleasant experience, really focused on what I wanted, offered great creative options and were just a delight to work with. My husband and I have used William Travis Jewelry several times. Their store doesn't resemble the jewelry shops you'll find at the mall and may, instead, remind you of a museum. **This is an artist's shop, not a name brand jewelry purveyor; if you're looking for Tacori, Verragio or any other name to go with your Coach purse, they do not have it.** They do custom and unique work and if that's what you want, then you'll be very pleased. Everything we've asked him to do has been done promptly and with great customer care and service. For my second ring they even allowed us to work out a payment plan and take the ring home ahead of the final two payments. When there was a misunderstanding about the extent of engraving on the band (a beautiful full wheat pattern) it was taken care of with no questions or charges whatsoever. The repairs we've had them do were seamless and have proven very durable. My grandmother's band is over 80 years old and he honestly told us that reworking it into a new piece would destroy the delicate structure, but that he'd be happy to re-tip all of the prongs and replace a missing small old cut diamond which matches the originals very well. As for my husband's mokume gane band, it was re-sized by adding a strip of 18k yellow gold and the expansion is blended smoothly with the pattern to the point of near invisibility. Travis is easy to work with and listens to your ideas. He has a great imagination, though, and will give you his honest opinion about what will and may not work, which we always appreciate. For both rings done through their shop we've taken stones in that we either had picked out or inherited as family heirlooms. They specialize in reinventing pieces and have no qualms with using stones you may have picked up elsewhere. As a final note, I'd like to add that the ladies working in the shop are especially sweet. I had two necklaces shortened and collected them last week. One necklace was perfect but the other one needed to be shortened by a few inches more. Last week I was charged $50 each. Today I was told the same work would be $150!!! TRIPLE the price I paid last week!!I was told by the staff member that the owner said I had been misquoted on the work that I collected last week!! Absolutely no interest in making this right for me. I cannot wear the necklace at this length and there was no care or interest in helping me. I was willing to pay again to have the repair done for the same price but not TRIPLE the price!! The owner did not even come out and speak to me about it. The excuse was the staff person who quoted the work previously didn't know what they were doing!! Yikes. Won't be back. read more

I've never had a ring break before. Not even a cheap $15 ring from any old gift shop. Not once. I purchased this beautiful, elegant blue sapphire ring from William Travis Jewelers, it is seriously lovely and I was so excited about it. I was instantly in love. It has broken five times. FIVE. The first time, it was while I was calmly driving, I wasn't even tense. They repaired it for me, and I was thrilled to wear it to DPAC for a play. It broke again. They repaired it. The third time it broke, I was at a wedding. They repaired it. The fourth time, I was out on a date having dinner and this time one of the eleven blue sapphires fell out. I have to say that I just feel done. I don't want to keep bringing it in for repairs. I asked for an exchange or something so that I can wear this ring without having to bring it in for a repair, but no, they won't do anything other than repair it for me. I guess my beautiful, classic ring is just a paperweight now. I guess I can just look at it in the box. I sure do wish I could wear it though, it's seriously lovely. read more

We were lucky enough to be referred to this gem (yes - pun intended) of a store through a previous, and I'm sure future, customer. My boyfriend and I searched and searched through all of the chain and online jewelry stores for a unique engagement ring. We wanted something that stood out from the crowd but would be classic enough to last our lifetime and hopefully be passed to future generations. I was fortunate enough to have a fourth generation diamond wedding band to use as the start for our piece, though you don't have to have any idea of what type of you would like going in. Travis and his staff will guide you through the design process. We purchased a green Richard Homer sapphire to use as the center stone. If you haven't seen his gem work you must stop by the store to see some of the pieces that have his stones set in them. Truly magical! Travis was able to use a bezel setting to set our sapphire as the centerpiece in the band by cutting it in half. You would never know that we combined an 80 year old piece with something completely new and modern. The ring is a visual seamless blend. One of our concerns before going to talk about a custom piece of jewelry was budget. We never thought we could afford a custom piece. Travis is able to work with nearly any budget to create a unique and special piece that you will love for a lifetime. It wasn't too much and I understand they are passing along the extra expense of taking credit cards, but only giving four stars since if they had made me are of that I would have just paid cash. Perhaps they sell good stuff, but as a jewelry repair place, they do poor work. I just went there for a simple ring-resizing. Soldering job lasted less than a year before the band completely cracked. When returned to get it fixed, Travis claimed that this happens all the time (which it turns out is not true!--it's actually only with shoddy work that this happens) and that most people just wear broken jewelry and that I should do the same (nice customer service!). My overall assessment: they do cheap but shoddy work; Travis himself is unprofessional at best. If you want good work--take it somewhere else--it may cost more but you won't find yourself having to get work redone within 12 months. read more

I agree very much with a review from Catherine Y, as the owner disappointed me in the way he treated his customers, constantly speaking down and boasting. What really pushed me over the edge was the fact that I was lied to at this store. The owner explained that he makes everything in the store or has it custom made for him. They tried to sell me a piece that I later found online and is mass made in India. Not to say the jewelry isn't beautiful, but it is misrepresented. My wife noticed that one of the rocks on her engagement ring went missing. It has a diamond in middle and smaller ones off to the sides. She does a lot of activities including martial arts, dancing, etc so not surprised to see something like that pop out but still, that ring means a lot to us. I wasn't familiar with the jewelers in the area (been here only 5 years) and got recommendations from a couple people for places that were chains as well as privately owned. Someone mentioned that William Travis did everything at the store so that was a bit of plus for me. Didn't want to drop it off and then have it shipped back out somewhere to people I don't know. The store was a bit further than other places for me but I really like Chapel Hill so I didn't really mind. When I got there I thought the place was very nice and people were very friendly. I showed them the ring and they checked it out. They also let me look at it under the magnifying thingies they had there (they have a LOT of equipment). I knew the ring was already a little dull but man, when you look at it under the magnification it really looked beat up. Metal bent up, rocks looked dirty as all hell... definitely needed some TLC. I left the ring their so they could check it out before giving an estimate. Called me up, gave me a decent price and told me what would be best to have done. They needed to fasten the remaining diamonds in, replace the missing diamond and just really clean it up. I agreed and they went to work. Took a couple of days until it was done. I went in and looked at it under the magnification and it looked a HELL of a lot better. It actually looked pretty awesome. I give this place a 5 star. You can tell they are legitimate professional and do all their own work (and a great job at it). Their people are also really nice. I am usually pretty intimidated when walking into jewelry stores, car dealerships, etc (buying the engagement ring in the first place was nerve racking).
