My parents took me and my two sisters here for my birthday in 2008; it tickled my parents to see their daughters in a chain gang of horses. I've ridden more than my sisters, so I mounted a big horse named JB (no, not VB...;), my sisters rode First Class and Rocky. We picked some cute helmets from the barn and giddied-up. The ride was nice, albeit a little slow, but that's what we wanted. The trek to the Ten Mile Beach is really beautiful; I love riding through narrow paths, and the canopy of trees was comforting. The tide was perfect when we went, and got to canter on the shore for quite some time. I would have liked more space between the horses, especially when Rocky took a massive doodoo right in front of me, but I know the horses are trained to follow the leader. Advertised as the best, we just had to try this place. Our reservation was for the 4:00 group beach ride. When we arrived at 3:45 we found no people inside the main office. We waited inside and looked around. The main office is cluttered, but there are books to buy and things on the walls to look at. At about 3:55 someone came in and told us that the 4:00 ride was canceled because the instructor was sick. The 5:00 was still on, and without giving us the option for a refund, he rescheduled us for that slot. At 4:45 we arrived again ready to ride. This time the staff was more immediate with getting us checked in. Everyone has to watch a basic horse riding video before being given a helmet and horse. The ride was nothing special, it consisted of walking across highway one, going down a path to the ocean, and then riding on a path beside the beach. Not actually on the beach, beside it. Let me stress that again. We did not ride on the beach, but beside it. Considering that each member in the group was an experienced rider, this was a tad ludicrous. My riding partner and I were the two last in line, so even though the guide was shouting history lessons, we could not hear him. Instead we both had a peaceful sit with a view of the ocean, but no excitement of horse riding or even the entertainment of learning about Mendo's history. read more

Can't think of a more magical way to end my California vacation than with a sunset canter on the beach. I can't praise Ricochet Ridge Ranch enough for the fantastic time we had. Even though we were running late, they waited for us. Give yourself plenty of time to drive Hwy 1, as the views of the Pacific Ocean is simply gorgeous. The tight twists and turns means that you can't drive that fast (and why would you want to with that view?) It's $45 for a 1.5 hr group ride along the beach. The group ride is normally just a walk ride, but they graciously allowed me to canter because I know how to ride. And let me tell you that there's nothing more exhilarating than cantering down the beach while the waves are lapping up the shore. Gorgeous views, fantastic customer service, and an incredible deal (45 for a 1.5 hr ride -- unheard of nowadays). A little piece of heaven found in Mendocino County. read more

We made a reservation online and went to the ranch to get ready for our tour when we were told that we had to reserve 7 days in advance, which we were not aware of since we were only in town for a short weekend. It was not blatant on the website nor on the confirmation e-mail that we received after inputting our credit card information. They should not ask us for our credit card information or use the online reservation system if they don't even use it. Also, at the ranch, the tour guide was extremely rude to us and snapped "no there's no room" directly to us and I was very taken aback by her comment. Then another woman did help us and asked if 2 pm was a better time but we had other engagements at that time. I am sure it would have been a good experience if we had the chance. read more

First we really like our trail guide she was very engaging, knowledgeable, funny and helpful. She definitely added the 4 star to the rating. However, My only complaint is that it is advertised as a 1-hour beach ride and you really only spend about 15 minutes on the beach the rest of the time is trail riding along side the road, through campgrounds to get to the beach. I was disappointed and mislead with this and felt it should be explained better on the website. The horses were great, each with their own personality, very well trained on the trails. read more

What was most appealing was her ability to match the horses to our personalities. Located right on the highway, you cant miss it! The introduction video is pretty outdated, hence the VCR and old school box tv you will watch it on. The picture is fuzzy, faint and flips its actually kind of funny. The ride was cool, slow and steady! We went through a state park, where we pass campsites, and lovely forest scenery, and then onto the beach and back. I was riding a younger horse "cowboy" who was very well trained and cooperating with me that day! He did try to eat grass every time we stopped, but it didn't bother me. My fiancé was riding "Roller" the gorgeous Clydesdale, he seemed to like water, he walked close to the water when on the beach. The beach trails were nice and designated for horses only! We were able to stop and our guide took photos on the beach. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous, the calming pace of slow walking horses, sounds of crashing waves, and of course overcast fog makes the ride so soothing and relaxing. Overall I enjoyed my horse back riding experience in regards to the scenery and horses. My only complaint, is customer service. It wasn't the best. We were not greeted or given any instruction until after 10 minutes wondering around. A younger blond woman must of been having a bad day. She was rude, impatient, and gave dirty looks. read more

My husband and I made reservations for our second anniversary on Halloween. The evening prior to, a large storm came in and was predicted to rain until 10am the next day. Even though our reservation was at noon Lari was honest with us and told us that the horses where soaked, the beach was extremely sloppy, and we would need to take it very slow. She was well aware that I wanted to trot and canter on the beach. She said she would still take us out but wanted to make sure that since we are paying to ride that we enjoyed ourselves. We decided to hold out and see if the weather would be better the next day. The next morning my husband called at 9am and she was able to get us in at noon on Saturday the 1st. We arrived early and my husband walked up to the gentleman tacking the horses, and asked if the portapotty was ok for him to use. When my husband returned to the car he stated the man was a little rough around the edges and felt like he had bugged him. Once he was ready for us to fill out paperwork I could see what my husband meant (i'll elaborate a little later). He asked us to watch a video about mounting, dismounting, and basic riding. The poor video is really outdated and old with skips in the footage. Although I am sure the information would be the same it would be nice to have a crisp clean video. With today's technology this could pretty much be done on a cell phone and burned to a dvd for cheap. After the video he asked us to go outside and go by the mounting blocks and he will bring us horses to get on. On my reservation I had stated that I would like a english saddle. When he brought a horse around he told me it was mine. I was surprised because the horse had a western saddle on. I asked if an english saddle was available and he stated I ddin't ask for one and prompted me to get on. I was a little taken aback by his response and did not want to start an argument so I got on. My husband thinks that maybe because our reservation was moved the information was not transferred over??? Being an individual who has trained hunter/jumper, dressage I am most comfortable in an english saddle. I was a little bummed but at least it was not a bulky western saddle and was a western endurance saddle. I was paired with Cowboy and my husband was paired with Roller. My poor husband had no idea what he was doing and Roller was doing whatever he wanted in the parking lot. I was concerned we may have to pony him. There was another lady and her two children in our group who had some issues so they cancelled their ride. It turned into a private ride for us which was nice. Our guide mounted his horse Chardonnay and led us across the road. Once we started riding he actually turned into a nice guy. I engaged in conversation with him while my husband and Roller slowly brought up the rear. We took a relaxing walk on a path above the beach before we headed down onto the sand. Once we got closer to the ocean our guide offered to get off his horse and take pictures for us. I thought that was so nice of him. I expected him to only take one or two pictures but he took closer to 20 from all different angles. By the time I was going to ask if I could canter he lead us back up to the paved path. I wasn't sure when I should have asked or if he was going to tell me I was free to canter on the beach. I was really disappointed that I lost my opportunity especially since the lady we made the reservation with was very aware that I was really looking forward to it. As we made our way back Cowboy started limping on his front left leg. I was concerned for him and offered to get off and walk back. Our guide checked his hoof and could not find anything in it. I took a few more strides and there was no improvement. I dismounted and rode Chardonnay who was such a gentleman. I anticipated him needing a little more guidance since he had spooked earlier on our ride and gotten frisky a couple times. With a quite seat he actually started to round his neck and his ears started to flop with his steps. It took a little coxing until Cowboy would walk but eventually his limp went away. Our guide gladly walked the mile and a half back and did not mount Cowboy. To me this is a person who really cares about the horse's well being. He even said if his limp didn't go away once we got to a spot a trailer could get to he would call to have Cowboy picked up. We we got back to the ranch I was able to dismount on my own. My husband on the other hand needed a little talk through. Our guide was very patient with him. Before we left he brought us out a horseshoe to hang over our door for our 2nd anniversary. I would take a ride here again! I would just be a little more vocal about an english saddle and wanting to do more than just walk. It was a nice relaxing ride. read more

We had an amazing time on a horse-ride at Ricochet Ridge Ranch this weekend while in Mendocino. This was the first time on a horse for either of us. We booked the day before to join a group ride at 12PM. We ended up changing it that morning to 2PM (no problems there), and when we got there we were the only ones on the ride. We had James as our tour guide - he was very friendly and professional, helping us get comfortable with the horses and making sure we were okay. I was on a HUGE horse (Roller) and could tell that if it wanted to take off on me, there would be big problems. Luckily, it never came to that. My wife was on a smaller white horse (Cloud) and she had a great time as well. Our ride lasted 1.5 hours and we went down a short trail and onto the beach. My horse went into the water, but my wife's horse was not interested. Overall I felt really safe and comfortable the whole time, especially with James leading the way. I was happy to see that even though we were the only ones in the group, he didn't short-change our ride or try to bring us back in early. In the end, we got a private ride with a guide when we had signed up for the group ride. We loved every minute of it - I highly recommend Ricochet Ridge and James! read more

FANTASTIC place to go for a ride on the beach if you are staying anywhere near by. We were just south of Mendocino so maybe 20 minutes away of the ranch. Super easy to schedule a ride and well worth it. I have years of riding experience (show jumping), have taught all levels, and felt very comfortable with the quality of service offered. I was with a group so we did all walking and the beginner riders were well taken care of by happy horses, good guides and overall lots of consideration for safety. I was given a tour of the facility after the ride. Ricochet is under new ownership as of 1 yr ago and they are making great improvements. Horses are healthy, happy and safe for all riders. On a recent trip to Mendocino we made the trek to Ricochet Ranch for some scenic horseback riding. The staff here was friendly and the ride was beautiful. The ride was long enough, but not too long. I was most impressed with how well behaved the horses were. All were well trained and attentive. We had a group of about 10 people and 3 guides went with use to ensure our safety. They also took pictures of everyone down that the beach. I highly recommend Ricochet Ranch for anyone doing a trail ride. Great for kids too. We had 2 in our group. TIP: It is rather hard to fin because there isn't a sign. Look for the horse trailers on the right hand side of the road past Fort Bragg. Enjoy! read more

Great business. We made a reservation online about a week before and somehow made an error on the dates. We show up and it quickly became apparent that the date we reserved is wrong. The staff and owner pulled some strings and got us out on a ride later in the day even though they were booked and very busy. It's been a small while since I mounted a horse and rode along the beach. Ricochet Ridge Ranch offers a great opportunity to do this. I was the most experienced rider in the group so I help up the back on a horse with a little bit of an attitude, but still fun to ride. My horse's name was Vzethesda (or something) After watching an informative video, that may be overwhelming if you never been on a horse, we mounted up and took a trail ride. Vida was our guide and she was pretty on top of things. My fiancé and I enjoyed the trail ride immensely and had some great views. I'm only docking a star because the group was six people with varied experiences and it seemed a little large. I had no idea what the guide was saying 95% of the time being in the back so it would have been nicer if the group was 4 people max. It might be worth it to take a short lesson before doing something like this if you never been on a horse. There was a girl with zero experience on a docile pony who was quite frustrated at many times since she didn't know how to hold the reins, control the pony and that pony took advantage of opportunities to graze. She wasn't near the front of the group so it delayed us on a few occasions. Overall, great ride, beautiful views, good horses and a nice tour guide. I'd do it again if I was in the area. This was actually what prompted us to do a weekend getaway to Mendocino in the first place. Here's a tip, check on Yipit for a deal before booking. They've been running a deal for $35/person or $69/2-people. Also, bring your phone so the guide can snap a picture of you. My boyfriend and I had a great time horseback riding along the beach. When you first arrive, you will sign some liability forms, choose a helmet, and watch an instructional video. Don't worry if you don't catch on to everything the video covers. It can be a little overwhelming, but the staff walks you through mounting and controlling the horse. I was honestly terrified since my horse, Roller, seemed to be unresponsive to my demands and walked wherever he wanted. Once the ride starts, it gets a lot easier as the horses are training to follow one after another. Roller definitely loved his snacks. If I took my attention off of him for a second to enjoy the views, he would take the opportunity to start snacking on the nearby foliage. Don't be surprised if you see the horse in front of you pooping and trotting at the same time... it is an interesting sight! Our guide was very friendly. She called my boyfriend my husband which we both got a kick out of. During the ride, she engaged us in friendly conversation about our trip here, our career aspirations, etc. She told lovely anecdotes along the way that gave the trail more context and history. Each horse had its own unique personality, and it was funny to see her chastise certain horses along the way. The trail goes through a little of forest before you reach the beach. All of it is very beautiful. It was a great escape from urban life. We could see seals sunbathing out on the rocks. I was so happy to see them, since we heard the seals were in hiding after many abalone seekers had scared them off. This is a definite must for all Fort Bragg visitors! read more

The only thing I didn't like was the service in the office. The lady behind the desk kept us waiting for 10 minutes while she yapped on the phone. She was short with us and rude. They should hire someone with better people skills. The guides and the other staff were great! We signed our waiver forms and went to find helmets. Not the most attractive thing to wear and you will get helmet head so don't bother doing your hair before going for a ride. Better safe than sorry, I didn't mind the helmets. Their only bathroom is a port-o-potty, and there is only one. We watched a short video on how to mount the horse, how to steer your horse, etc. Very handy, make sure to pay attention if you're a first-timer! Then, we were assigned our horses-I got the horse named 1st Class. He was 25 years old and beautiful! The ride was through MacKerricher State Park and the beach. It was about 2 hours long and a beautiful day. I wish I'd worn sunblock. Afterwards, I fed 1st Class a carrot. Pay after your ride and don't forget to tip your guide! I had ridden here once before several years ago and HAD to come back! My husband thankfully likes horseback riding too so we came on our one year anniversary trip. Gina was our guide and she was absolutely incredible!! We had such a great time and she made it memorable. I rode Malaka, and my husband rode Cowboy and he loved him! The beach trail ride is so amazing. What a beautiful stretch of beach! We had such a good time with Gina and our horse that we came back for another ride two days later with Gina and the horses. The second day was just as great! At one point on the ride, we had a sea lion following us in the water. Two days of private rides; first, through the woods, and the second, on the beach. Our guide was Vida, who did everything possible to make sure we were having fun and ensure our safety. Good: -Experienced staff took care of us completely, since we've never even seen a real horse up front. -They have a (short) formal "training session" before the ride which is nice. -The forest and beach are great -The horses are well trained -The path doesn't have a lot of automobile traffic (safe for horse riders) -Great Price -very flexible staff to accommodate guests/customers. -No "weight limit" like its local competitor (see: ross ranch). Big riders (like me) get the Clydesdale (yay!) Bad: -Told to arrive 15 minutes early (11:45AM) , but no one was there to greet us until around 12:15PM -Some horses looked like they had some skin lesions and some bald spots here and there (not that I know what a "healthy horse" should look like... and all of them looked very well fed, and they all had stables) Overall: It was our first time on a horse and they accommodated us perfectly. It had rained very much the day before, and staff suggested that (as first time riders) we come back another day. This is great because it shows concern for guests/customers... not just greed for the guest's money. The ride was great (the next day) and everything was perfect! The staff and the establishment are top-rate. The experience, however, was kind of boring. It's not that I didn't enjoy my time, but when I booked a private ride, I was hoping that I'd get to gallop on the beach like the pictures on the website, rather than just walk at a snails pace, on a trail, through the woods. The only difference, we were told, between being in a group and being on a private ride is that the private tours get to go closer to the water. However, I'm not sure being close to the water was a great thing, as my horse was pretty freaked out by the surf and reared up on his hind legs a couple times. Later, the guide told us that my horse in particular did not like water...Evenso, not to be too cliche, but being from Texas I have been on a horse quite a few times in my life, and was kind of bored by this. It wasn't that the people weren't fantastic or that the horses weren't well-kept--because they were on both accounts, but I would say that this is good for beginner riders or ones that will enjoy the novelty of being on a horse near the water over all else. Great for tourists who don't expect much, but not-so-good for not-so-beginning riders. At the end of the day it was still a beautiful experience and one I'm glad to have done, but next time, I think I will inquire about a more individualized/challenging ride. read more

Horses and I haven't always been friends...so, I decided to give them another try on a 1.5hr ride to 10 mile beach at Ricochet Ridge. Glad that I did and very thankful to Gina for her much needed instruction and patience! I appreciated that they hand-picked the horses based on the rider's experience level (in my case, a disastrous pony ride when I was younger) and fears (for example, what if my horse gallops away? What if I fall off? and so on). After all was said and done, I left with a new appreciation for horses and especially for those that take care of them! P.S. Taylor, try not to be so rude to your staff... Watching that wasn't a pleasant experience for your customers and I'm sure even less pleasant for the staff. read more

Great experience at Ricochet Ridge with Vida and her daughter Taylor. We signed up for a group ride but it was just the two of us and the two guides. Neither of us have had much experience with riding, but with our guides' assistance (and some well-trained horses), we got the hang of it quickly. Loved this ride. We took a Forest and Beach ride and it just stunning!! We started a little rugged ranch. Our horse were sweet and responsive. They seemed to be happy, well cared for and very fit. Go Poncho & Cowboy!! It was great that the ranch has you to watch a safety video before you ride. Since my husband it not much of rider as I am, the tips were helpful. And the guide was great. She was very friendly , knowledgeable and made us feel very comfortable throughout our ride. But the amazing scenery in the forest and beautiful beach ride...loved seeing the seals,too. This was a lovely experience! The horses were friendly, clean and well tempered. The staff was knowledgeable about the horses, and Zoey was friendly and was pointing out fun facts throughout the ride. The views from the beach we breathtaking and amazing on horseback. Zoey took the time to get off her horse, and take some wonderful pictures of us on our horses with the ocean behind us. Those will be a wonderful keepsake. Thank you! The training video was a bit outdated, and not well edited. But it covered the basics, and they got us on the horses quickly. I am an advanced rider, and I have to say, I was a little disappointed that we stayed at a walk the entire time. I was hoping to at least canter on the beach for a little bit. We walked through the forest, alongside the beach, and even onto the beach itself for extended periods. We even stopped by a nice patch of sand and surf where the guide took photos for us.. I absolutely love the Fort Bragg/Mendocino stretch of the Pacific North Coast... and definitely love to take advantage of all the many things to do in this region. I've longed to visit Ricochet Ranch for a couple years now, and finally had an opportunity to do so this week! My partner and I enjoyed our ride. Both of us have riding experience, and the tour is very structured... but we were looking for a relaxing, enjoyable ride on the beach, and that is exactly what we got! Our guide, Gina, was incredibly friendly, and took a moment to point out the natural flora and fauna on the trail. She was exceptionally outgoing and personable. She's also skilled at taking great pictures of her guests on their horses while atop her momentarily non-cooperative horse... so we have fantastic photos of ourselves with our horses on the gorgeous beach! My partner's horse, "Cloud," was a beautiful white horse... though a bit sleepy and stubborn. My horse, "Roller" was a majestic, tan Clydesdale... ginormous! He was very attentive to my direction, requiring very little prodding. This tour is very kid-friendly, and a perfect ride for beginners. If you're an experienced rider looking to be a bit more playful on your horse, definitely arrange for a private ride. For us, the laid back trail ride was exactly what we were looking for, through the forest, and along the beach. We saw seals sunbathing just off the shore. We'll definitely come back again! Took my wife on a 3 hour ride today with Angela as our guide. I rode Cowboy, and my wife rode Maleka. We had a very nice time riding back towards town along the trail to Pudding Creek. There we back tracked North and went down to the beach for a short stay. Cowboy was a BIG horse for me, as I weigh in at 230. He was a pushover, and went wherever I pointed him. He did take off with me once. Don't know what spooked him, but he settled down soon as I give him a good tug. Maleka was a little Miss Sassy, and the wife loved her as they were two peas in a pod. 3 hours is a long ride and my knees and hips are still sore 8 hours later (but worth every bit). If you want to find a stable that treats their horses well, this is not the place. I was interested in reserving a 1.5 hour ride to Ten Mile beach until I learned how poorly horses are treated at Ricochet. When I called Ricochet today to book a beach ride for two people, and to get a sense of how well horses were treated, the staff person with whom I spoke made it clear that horses are not treated well at all. During my call, I asked what breaks (if any) horses were given between trail rides to rest/recooperate, she advised me that "if they were busy," the same horse could go out at 10AM, 12PM, 2PM and 4PM because "the horses need to work." Thus, the same horse could go on 4 trail rides in a day from 10AM to 6PM, without regard for rest/breaks. Beyond those facts, the staff person was suspicious of me and asked me why I was asking the question at all?! In short, the attitude was "I'm busy. If you don't want to book a ride, don't waste my time with your questions about the horses." Caveat/consideration, I could be wrong in my assessment but I think the call speaks for itself. read more
