We thankfully found a spot on the street but one biker's car got parked behind closely so they asked us to move up a little (we parked in front of them) so they could load their car. They have a restroom and a splash pad.

Along the way, I passed murals, sculptures, Little Free Libraries, and plenty of benches--each inviting a pause. The path buzzed with life, yet still offered quiet moments beside the water. At Cullen Plaza, I gave in to laziness and grabbed a Lime scooter. Gliding along the wide, welcoming path, I passed buskers playing jazz and folk, their tunes drifting through the warm air. The Riverwalk's layout makes it easy to navigate, with clear signs and a friendly, open feel--like Detroit showing off its best side. I wrapped up at the Milliken State Park Lighthouse, a proud little beacon with Windsor's skyline just across the water. Jetskis circling on the Detroit River, families picnicked, and the sun above the RenCen was pure gold. Only recently constructed in 2004 during the first phase of the park's development, it stands at 63 feet tall and was designed as a scaled-down replica of the Tawas Point Lighthouse, a historic beacon on Lake Huron built in 1876. This lighthouse doesn't serve a traditional navigational role like its Great Lakes predecessors. Instead, it marks the entrance to the harbor and serves as a visual anchor for the park. The park itself was originally named Tri-Centennial State Park, commemorating the founding of Fort Detroit in 1701, and was later renamed in 2009 to honor Governor William G. Milliken, a champion of environmental stewardship. The lighthouse is not open for touring but the grounds around it are fully accessible from all angles. Loved how tucked away the location felt, despite being super conveniently located with a large free parking lot on site at Orleans and Wilkins. There was a full bar, giant/oversize yard games, and nice outdoor seating. Little Asian Bites brought the food, DJ, and other fun vendors like Pong Detroit and Scrap Soils for composting (perfect for a food event!). We were right on the Dequindre Cut bike/foot path and had plenty of walkers and bikers passing by. Just felt like a really ideal summer evening!

The Esplanade, which runs from Campus Martius Park's southern boundary to Larned Street, turns a section of Woodward Avenue into a friendly, pedestrian-friendly public area. It acts as a link between important public landmarks such as the Detroit Riverfront, the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, and The Spirit of Detroit Plaza. I spent a bit here sitting in one of the Adirondack chairs and counting down time for my Chipotle order to be prepared. While sitting, a nice flow of pedestrians coming and going along Woodward as well as Doordashers parking semi-legally to pick up food from the restaurant. It encourages people to stay, socialize, and take in the urban setting with its seating areas, food trucks throughout the week, and seasonal events. Its status as a hub with transportation access is further reinforced by the fact that it is the southern terminus of Detroit's contemporary streetcar system, the QLine. Amazing!!!!!! If you want to really learn how to skate AND have a great time, come here! I just…read morefinished an 8 week class of "Skate Basics+Fitness". I hadn't roller skated since I was 12 and now I'm a really confident skater. It's a great workout too! You won't get this kind of attention and instruction anywhere else. This place focuses on adult skaters, age 21 and older. The classes are small. I took a class for one hour on Sundays with the same 8 people and we kept building upon what we learned. Adjustments and modifications are available for people with injuries too. We had students of all ages in this class, from 30's to 70's and we could all do it and work at our level. This personalized type of class doesn't exist anywhere else. Also, on Wednesday nights at 8:30pm, you can come here and practice and skate for $10. (They have free parking available out front.) I had the good fortune to be taught by the owner, Keith. Keith is a spectacular skater and human being. He is kind, patient, funny, and an excellent teacher. He has truly built a supportive skating community and I'm honored to be a part of it. Keith offers a variety of classes and he is also working on new classes to offer. He's open to ideas and feedback too. I'll be taking a class on outdoor skating next, as well a workshop on backwards skating. Learning how to skate here was the best decision I've made in a long time. I highly recommend taking class and joining this awesome skating community!
