I am an avid shopper and have frequented similar stores all over the US, so it is with great confidence that I can say Pulp & Circumstance is one of the best. It is lovingly and beautifully curated by co owners and friends Jennifer & Ashley. I was doing business in the neighborhood and noticed they were finally open (I peeked in their window last week) and today is their grand opening. The store is located inside of a beautiful Victorian house that has been expertly transformed into about 1,000 sq feet of retail space. There are three major rooms that house a variety of items including but not limited to: fresh flowers, air plants, succulents, books, at least 100 (very cute, often letterpress) cards, stationary, baby gifts, jewelry, candy by the pound, jewelry, mirrors, art, etc. Best of all some of the wares are from local artists and businesses. Many of the items here I have never seem before, and I easily spent a hour familiarizing myself with my new go to place for gifts, small home decor items and cards. Does it sounds like the owners here are my very best friends? Well they are not (yet). Today was the first time I met these two remarkably charming and welcoming gals in my community. I am looking forward to future chats about the happenings in the Berg (we traded information about what other businesses are coming to town including a bakery and restaurant this summer). Located on the Spirit Lake Highway, it is best known for its towering 22-foot-tall Bigfoot statue and its unique status as the home of the Cascades Sasquatch Research Organization. We stopped to see the A-Frame house that was partially buried by the 1980 mudflow, providing a literal "frozen in time" look at the eruption's power. Joe was very gracious with showing us a "sneak peak" into some very unique artifacts from Mt. St. Helens eruption, even though his facility is currently closed.

The exact demographic is puzzling to me. The shop has somewhat of a metaphysical vibe, with AA/spiritual/motivational tchotchkes thrown in. Don't get me wrong, the business owner seems friendly, the store has been around for a long time, so she probably has a devoted following. But it took me, personally, five years to give in to my curiosity to see what the place was all about. Think New Renaissance meets hospital gift shop, with a spiritual reading thrown in for good measure. There is a wide assortment of spiritual and self-help books, New Age and Celtic CDs, lots of branded coins and trinkets, bookmarks and the like. I think you should check the place out, even if it's only just once. The store has survived its current location for a number of years, and obviously continues to draw folks in.
