As it can happen, even in Canada's humble wine regions, there are wineries that get overlooked because they are located near much more famous (Tawse) and market-savvy (Megalomaniac) places that have lots of wines in Ontario's alcohol monopoly the LCBO.
I came here looking to visit someplace I had never been before and was simply blown away. I almost did not review this to be a bit self-serving by keeping this a secret.
No, it does not have a fancy gift shop with lots of jams, gourmet chocolates, carafes, cheese boards, and Riedel wine glasses for sale.
No, there are no fancy cellar tours, and the place, while nice, is easily overshadowed by much fancier neighbours. In fact, the driveway can be a bit muddy after a rainstorm.
No, there is not a large staff of quasi-knowledgeable youngsters ready to handle tour bus crowds.
What is does have is wine you can only get here, a nice little Italian restaurant, and Laura- a one-woman-workhorse of a sommelier who gave me what was arguably the best tasting I have had in the region.
They do a lot of ripaso-style wines thanks to the owner's Italian heritage, yet also fine sweet wines, Merlot, Pinot Noir and more. The tasting flight and service that Laura created was brilliant. Every wine I tried was one I would happily drink with friends or keep for myself.
And did I mention the prices? Very reasonable in the 15-30$ range for wines that have 5-7 years of age.
I also ate pasta and had a glass of Pinot at the restaurant. Service and food were delicious.
