Date: November 16, 2022 I've never heard of this place or of tofu donuts before but my mother in law brought some over the other day so we got to try them out. Being a huge donuts fan, I was pretty excited to try these out. She brought a honey, a red velvet, an earl grey and a matcha (son ate it, not pictured). I got to try the other three. They all tasted like a sponge cake to me. Nothing too special, pretty bland, but very soft and chewy. I love that it's made from all natural and very clean ingredients and since it's baked tofu, it's so much healthier than a 'real' donut. Haha. They are pricy for me, ringing at 3$ a donut but understandable seeing that it's made of. Overall, glad I got to try it but it's not something I would go back for. I've also had honey, matcha, Earl Grey, red velvet, chocolate, chocolate chip, etc. To me, these are not actually "donuts", as they merely have the round shape of a typical donut. I like that they're not overly sweet, though the flavors are a bit subtle. They're a bit mushier and spongier than an actual donut because of the tofu... and very moist. I walk into the store and although the ambiance is quite cozy I thought everyone was overhyping this spot; the donuts on display were small and $3 a pop is pricey as hell. But I thought I'd try it because at worst it would've been a one and done. I'm glad I was wrong about my first impressions; somehow or some way, these donuts are like crack. They have a good texture and they taste amazing. Heating these for 10 seconds per their instructions just hits the spot. Their matcha green tea was also delicious; not overly sweet and just the right amount of refreshment. The service was also great. I'm assuming the japanese man and woman are the storeowners; they were very kind and had a smile on at all times. They really make you feel welcome in their store. I'm not going to deny that the donuts are pricey for their size, however they are good and I would definitely comeback for certain occasions if I wanted to get some baked snacks or refreshing beverages. Cute Tea Place! This place has such an amazing vibe! The decorations with the lights and the anime-felt theme to it is great. The tea I got was also amazing. I got the matcha green tea, and the matcha flavor is strong in the drink. I also tried the Tofu donut, and it has a muffin-like but very moist texture to it. It tasted really good! The service of the place is wonderful. Staff is super friendly, and all wear masks. Covid-wise, it is pretty covid-friendly. They require people to wear masks and have a limited amount of people inside. Parking-wise, I parked right next to the curb, but it may not be super easy to find parking. This little gem is nestled in an office building on the corner of Owensmouth and Vanowen. I have driven by and seen their handmade signs for years, and my big regret is that I never stopped to check it out because I could have been enjoying these treats years ago! This is a very small store, with outdoor seating. They offer baked tofu donuts (more on those in a moment) and an extensive coffee and tea beverage menu. They also have lemonade. They use an alkaline water for all their beverages. So, it's important to set your expectations coming in... this is not your standard corner donut store. The tasty, spongy, delicious little cakes you are about to enjoy with their subtle and exotic flavors are not the deep-fried fare that your grandma used to dunk in her coffee. Try to think of these less as donuts, and more as delicious baked cakes. I've tried many of the flavors but not all of them. So far our favorites are the Matcha Green Tea, Earl Grey, and the Charcoal (!). Yes, charcoal. It's hard to describe that one, but it is delicious. They rotate the flavors daily and while some seem to be always available many rotate in and out. Others we've enjoyed are the cumquat, cheesecake, red velvet, honey, lemon, and Azuki. Spongy and delicate, but also dense, these little donuts are a real treat. The kids are always bugging me to come here on the weekends. They have some lovely Studio Ghibli decor inside. The menus are printed daily so you can pick one up while you wait in line to order. They have some chairs if you want to wait indoors, or you can sit at the tables outside. They have a pop-up awning, and it's pleasant to sit outside in the mornings, though there is a lot of traffic.
