They sold me a $600 window with green tint despite assuring me it would not be green. It doesn't match any of my other windows and they wouldn't take it back. They could have at least sent me a new sash with the proper (clear) glass I had asked for in the first place. It's also just a bad quality window overall. read more

Well, I gave them 2 stars because they are polite but our experience yesterday was disappointing. We are redoing our bathroom and purchased 4 tubes of adhesive to put up the walls of the shower. We found when we went to use them that all 4 tubes were dried out and unusable. We thought we would have no problem returning them because we have and account and the receipt. They informed us that because we opened them, they were not returnable. Hmmm, bad practice under the circumstances. We only opened them because we were trying to find a good one since we had started the project. I have used Riggs in Niantic and New London. We will stick to New London from now on. We were seeking help choosing wallpaper and paint for a "ladies parlor" in our 1870s home. Stephen Ruddy at Ring's End Fairfield helped us select from a wide array of appropriate wallcoverings. We ultimately decided on a Morris wallpaper. He helped us choose a complementary paint for the trim, he recommended we try a board and batten style of wainscoting, and he recommended a terrific wallpaper installer for our project. I was shingling a 4500 sq foot Victorian house and building hundreds of feet of fencing out of expensive 2x2s. I chose Ring's End because they are supposed to be a PREMIUM lumber yard with materials at a higher grade than Lowes. Boy is that wrong. 1. There was no warning call that the delivery was coming (like Lowes does) and no window given when placing the order. 2. The delivery man placed the thousands of dollars of lumber on the front lawn in New London where property theft is a sport. He did not tell us he was here, he was just going to leave it without notice. Luckily, my contractor stopped him as he was making his getaway. 3. I had no time to get the dog in because it is a large great pyrenees and she cannot be moved if she does not want to, so I have to plan ahead, which I could not do because of item #1. Therefore when I opened the gate for the fencing material to be moved into the fenced yard, she broke free and ran out of the gate and toward the BUSY street, but the delivery man caught her. It was a terrifying experience and completely unnecessary if they delivered like Lowes does. 4. The delivery man did not give me a receipt so I could check the delivery against anything. I did give him a $40 tip as a standard practice, so please do not think badly of me. As it turned out, I was short a bundle of 2x2x8s. 5. I had to call for a receipt to be sent to me. How can that be a standard practice? When I spoke to the woman answering my call, I discovered that I was at least not charged for the 3rd bundle of 2x2s that I ordered so I got those at Lowes. 6. When I had time to inspect the lumber after he left, I saw that there were 6 2x2s that are damaged on the ends that anyone could see. I ended up returning a third of the lumber that was warped or had holes from knots. 7. When I returned the lumber, the man told me they were having trouble with a new supplier. If that was true, wouldn't they inspect the lumber BEFORE sending it out? They are either lying, or incompetent. Either way, I am DONE with Ring's End. The lumber I got at Lowes was actually higher quality and way cheaper. Shame on you Ring's End. I tried to go with the smaller business, and you disappointed me. read more

On May 12th, we ordered a set of doorbells for our front doors. They were on display with all the other hardware they sell. They do not carry anything in store and consider everything they sell in the aisles, a "special order" even though it's straight from the catalog and nothing is custom ordered to your size or liking. We were never informed about the product and how it mounts. They only offered the Baldwin doorbells in a recessed mounting. We were not aware of this when he sold it. He never explained the product or that it may not fit. When we received them and tried to put them on, they were recessed and we learned we needed a surface mount type of doorbell for our application. At no point during the time we ordered with Steve Johnson did he tell us that this was a recessed type of doorbell and to double check. We were unaware of the different types of product. Rings end being a place that is selling the product, they should know more about their product knowledge and what they are offering to inform the customers. AFTER we paid it, he then told us if it was returned, there is a small restocking fee, but never said the amount. They should have this posted at the counter and told to the customer BEFORE they purchase. We went home to try the doorbells and they did not fit without having to drill where the wires were there, to recess it in. Otherwise, it would not sit flush on the house. We went back to return it and had to wait about two weeks to see if we could even get our money back. I had actually never heard from them and had to call them to follow up. Again, poor Customer Service. We were told at this pount, there is a 25% restocking fee, which in my opinion is unreasonable! If they sell these things in the aisles and it represents what they have there they could just put it on the shelf and sell it to the next person who would want it. They said they had to ship it back and that they did not charge me shipping. I was not informed of any shipping fees either during purchase. Going forward sales people there should be trained more in product knowledge and have better professionalism with customers. Steve was very combative on the phone and unprofessional with our dealings with him. I would not recommend to shop here for anything. There are plenty of other places that have friendly and knowledgeable service in the area that will not rip you off. read more

A 40% price increase from display in store to being rung up at the register? Earlier in the day I had been in to return some lumber (about 600 dollars worth of red oak), purchase another board 12" red oak, and look around. That all went well. Thank you for accepting my return. When I was looking around I saw a display with cute "nature" themed Schaub hardware. One of the drawer pulls was a crab. Having work done at the house and carpenter here, i went back to store to see if i could purchase. Price on amazon $206. Talked to salesperson at store ...price $246. Okay... do they have one in stock? No. Can I buy display item? Salesperson asks Manager......okay but no discounts.... i say okay really appreciate it... salesperson takes pull off display rack ( manager says make sure to order a replacement for display...put note in system "customer already in possession....replacement to go on display"... salesperson rings me up...$346.......40% increase from display to cash register. I question it, salesperson says "if you allow us to order it you can have at $246..discounted price. But taking it today no discount so $346)... Crab did not come home with me. Ordered through Amazon. Now i have rotten crab taste in my mouth about Rings End and the Manager. Previously have been loyal local customer for nearly 20 years. read more

Rings end is doing curbside pickup for all supplies. I stopped today and let me tell you they did not skip a beat. On today's trip I needed to pick up some paint and brushes. Instantly I was greeted by super friendly staff. The paint person there is really helpful, unfortunately I did not catch her name but I would highly recommend her. I watch her work with a customer, bringing out samples and brochures. I live in old saybrook where there is a hardware store, lumberyard and paint shop but I will continue to drive to Niantic and give them my business. read more

I was sent here by my Dad to pick up some specific pieces of lumber to repair the front steps to our seasonal house in Old Lyme that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Normally I really hate the stereotype that women don't know what they're doing at the car dealership, lumber yards, Home Depot, what have you, but honestly....I really didn't know what I was doing. There, I said it. But don't use it against me later. I'd never been here before and didn't really know where to park...We were coming from the west on Hope Street and there wasn't any signage that I saw so I just drove in the first driveway...which was the back but no one seemed to care really. This was pretty much the trend for my entire visit, the employees assumed I knew what I was doing....which is nice I guess. Looking back I wish I had just point blank told them I was clueless. Ordering the lumber was super easy, I walked inside, gave the nice gentleman behind the counter the paper my dad gave me and he knew exactly what was needed. He ordered it up and handed me a pink sheet. um now what? I guess I should have been wearing a "I don't know what the hell I'm doing" sign. Anyway, I went outside and asked the guys who told me where to park- where I could find the lumber. They pointed in two directions (some was somewhere in that huge shed back there, some was in the other direction). After I gave a blank stare they helped me out. My van was loaded up in no time and I was on my way home. Until some other guy came running after my van saying they needed to stamp my receipt which had just been handed back to me...this other guy had been standing around with the guys who helped me load it...yeah ok. A warning would have been nice. Dude kid guy! My other observations were that they had a nice variety and I admired the displays both inside and out. They even have a room dedicated to paint swatches, that seemed pretty cool. read more
