I grabbed my friend's arm and walked to another bartender and ordered another round and tipped him more for not being so dramatic. It was the first time I've ever been refused service by a child with his arms crossed. It was very entertaining. I made sure to wave bye to demon twink on the way out with a golden smile. I'm glad there's a bartending program to get kids off the streets. Thanks for giving me something to tell my friends back home. I love how cheap the drinks are here and the sass that comes with it.

Every time I came to SoBe, I got turned away by the long line wrapped around the parking lot before midnight. That's when I normally get off work. But this time, we stopped by on Saturdays. We came super early, like 9:30 pm. Yeah. We got our free pass. Normally, it's $10 cover charge, which isn't bad because there is a huge dance floor with high tech lighting system and sounds system. It was totally worth every penny. Because we love to dance. We adore the music to our liking, more like in the 90's oldies. Yeah, we are older than most people on the dance floor. Thank goodness they didn't kick us out. I remember one night there was a huge group of young Asian guys came in around 10 pm. There were also many birthday celebrations around the seating area. Boy, I would love to sit on a cozy chair after dancing my ass off. Looks like they have some kind of VIP access. There were also girls and straight couples on the dance floor and around the lounge area. Oh, there is a cool patio on the side. Restroom was clean. Masking tape was still on the staircase. My biggest complaint with the old Eagle was the creaky floor. Varsity fixed it by laying industrial floating tiles. It's not for dancing. The acoustic quality was terrible. It sounded like a dance party at high school gymnasium. They put a scoreboard on the big wall where it used to be a painting with the former bar. Upstair bar is usually packed. Clientele was mostly younger crowd. They sang songs with the music it was playing while dancing. Varsity installed several TV monitors on every single wall. Not sure what they trying to create. Extremely gaudy. That's not what a video dance bar should look like. Ugh. Not sure if I want to come back. The downstairs bar and dance floor were so empty. I went there on a Friday night. They turned off all TV's around 12:30 am. I was watching a cricket game while dancing. WTF!! I don't have a good taste after that.

This Play Nightlife bar is located at the former Hamburger Mary's and Buddy's aka Kiki's on Grant Street of the Montrose Gayborhood. The entire complex has Hollywood neon sign on it. The left side is called Club Pause. The right side is called Play Nightlife. Together they are called Pause/Play (like on the music machine). On the weekends, Club Pause opens at noon and music starts at 10 pm. There are other activities like karaoke nights on Wednesdays and Thirsty Thursday etc. I'm usually here on Friday and Saturday nights after 11 pm. Saturdays seem to have a bigger crowd. Club Pause has bounce music by DJ Jimmy D on Saturdays and Sundays. It's a place to hang out and dance. I like to dance at Play Nightlife because the deejays are from the former Eagle Houston. CJ Fader was the resident deejay upstairs and DJ Jimmy Skinner was the resident deejay downstairs. Music is more danceable than South Beach Houston. There are not many parking spots up front. People usually park elsewhere and bar hop to Play from neighboring bars. There are 2 taco trucks in the parking lot. My favorite food truck Pixi Dust Houston is previously called Eagle Eats. That explains why I come to Play Nightlife more often than any other gay bars in the Houston's Gayborhood.

In about 10 minutes, the dance floor started to fill up. By the time I started dancing, the dance floor started to fill up and there was no room for my shoulders. It was so packed and I had so much fun. It gave me some good fat burning minutes with dancing in Latin pop music. Yeah. The bartenders are not only incredibly sweet and handsome but they make you feel right at home! Always have events on certain nights which makes drinking even more fun and easier to make new friends! Everyone here is constantly smiling and in the rare case that someone is a problem, our safety is their main concern. Trust me when I tell you, they take care of you! Cheap drinks and a great jukebox to keep your body moving is always accessible and they there's always music everyone can enjoy! Ripcord also has a history for upholding that montrose pride that you just can't get enough of. As I've stated before, these guys will take care of you in every way possible that they can. read more

Where do I start? I moved to Houston in 2013 and have been to all of the gays, but RIPCORD is the one I enjoy most because it has great music and a very laid back vibe. Lot's of younger guys started coming here after they renovated the place and put in new lighting. They have Sunday Show Tunes and Wednesday night Geeks Who Drink (trivia game night). Friday nights they have 80's music night which is awesome. Lots of different events to check out on Facebook. All the bartenders are really cool, but Christopher is my favorite. There's a shop called Black Hawk Leather that has an entrance on the back patio on Friday and Saturday nights. read more

I have been coming to the ripcord almost since it opened for business. Christopher is the fucking hottest bartender that I have ever seen. he slings a great drink, and makes you want to drop to your knees at the mere sight of him. the bar is one of the few in Houston that doesn't get overloaded by starch queens and twinks. it plays real music, and attracts real men. a comfortable leather crowd mixed with that guy that lives on the other side of the fence that you'd like to catch checking you out. a great comfortable pla e where you can be yourself. read more

So the Ripcord has changed a whole lot. I moved from Houston in 2011 so I hadn't been in several years. This club used to cater mostly to the bear/leather crowd. If that is the experience you're looking for the Ripcord isn't the place to look. The art on the walls was all nude women. I don't know if it's a lesbian bar now or what but it's patrons were 70% female. I'm not sure what happened but is not the same place it was a in the past. Also the description it's given on this site is very misleading if not outright dishonest. read more

This bar its been one of my favorite places if i wanted to chill. It's laid back and great service. Big patio, nice pool tables. They have 80s music night on Friday nights and Saturday night is full of different clubs hosting their events as well. Great for big groups because the place is so big you can move around even when its packed. They just renovated the place, improved the lighting and have really cool art shows from LGBT artists. Good for young and old. Just keep it chill. read more

I saw the better reviews on the Ripcord, so decided to give it another try. I also heard that the management was changed and the place had a "new" outlook. Let me be the first to tell you, nothing has changed. It was Saturday night and it was me and about 10 other people. I waited by the bar while the bartender was off doing god knows what, I just wanted a drink! So I left, and this is the last time. ripcord is the only bar left in gaytown where you can still see and feel a glimpse of the original gay community that made Montrose what it is/was. In its current configuration Ripcord is a meeting place for several different scenes within the gay community. Depending on the night you can bump into men, women, pups, masters/slaves, kinksters, red-necks, but mostly what you'll find is a lot of happy people who are glad that you're there. read more

I came out to enjoy a night with my gal pals and decided to stop by my neighborhood bar ripcord. What started as fun girls night out ended in disaster. These guys starting arguing and one of them even flipped a table!!!! I have never!! Then they proceeded to get into a scuffle. This is my neighborhood bar. I've been coming here for 30 years. The bar was recently painted which looks nice. Nice that they've been able to make the bar modern, but stay true to its roots. The people are very laid back. It's easy to talk to strangers and make new friends. Definitely check out their facebook page for events. read more

Hell, there was even an old lady with a walker there this time. You don't see that in the Midtown clubs. There is also a noticeable improvement on the sound system. I'm not an audiophile so I don't know the finer points of what makes things sound good but the music just sounded crisp and you can hear all the details. They also have a really good light system with laser beams and LEDs all over the place but it's not over-done. The bathrooms....yeah they're the same. nasty nasty wet floors. A few notes, as it turned out, the cover charge is now $10 instead of $5 in the old days but the door guy told me that if you guy before 10pm, it's still 5...I was there like 10 minutes too late so it would have been nice of him to forgive that extra 10 minutes alas, it is what it is and maybe in 14 years I'll actually ask around first! I kid...On the plus side, they had happy hour till 10:30 PM and drinks were like around $2? so it kind of made up for it. I'm not going to lie, I had a blast even though the AC was not keeping up with the crowd. I'll try to make it here more often now.

When people in reviews say this place is dark, I mean "the lights are almost out" dark. The bouncer told me he's seen it all upstairs...orgies, girl-on-girl, gangbangs, swingers, you name it....it's not exactly a casual speakeasy. You need to plan a night here if it's your prerogative. The upstairs is couples only, but the bouncer told me that if you'd slip him $20 then you can go upstairs and try your luck. The pictures they show you are brightened. This place is nearly pitch black. And I'm not saying this to blow up anyone's spot, it probably is a great spot for couples but it just wasn't my scene, especially when I vouched that it was a good place for me and my guy friend to chill. Also, the bartender wouldn't give me and my friend the time of day. I was really excited to see how this place made drinks and they wouldn't even service me and my friend...she just was checking her social media. I might come back here one day with a girlfriend I know VERY well, but as for now I'll keep my change and go somewhere else
