The demon twink bartender outside under the orange umbrella had an issue with my $5 tip and threw a fit when I tried to order another round after ignoring me for a bit. He made it clear that he didn't want to serve me again. "You're the one that tipped $5 right? Let me just sit here for a moment" and he sat on his chair and made a very hilarious "who's gonna love me" bratty face. It was cute. I grabbed my friend's arm and walked to another bartender and ordered another round and tipped him more for not being so dramatic. It was the first time I've ever been refused service by a child with his arms crossed. It was very entertaining. I made sure to wave bye to demon twink on the way out with a golden smile. I'm glad there's a bartending program to get kids off the streets. Thanks for giving me something to tell my friends back home. My husband and I have been patrons of this gay staple location for many years and have seen many bartenders come and go, we have NEVER experienced such disgusting and disrespectful behavior and service from a bartender. This server ANGEL has no business behind the bar engaging with customers. HE IS RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL AND SHOULD NOT BE REPRESENTING THIS ICONIC BUSINESS IN THIS MANNER! I hope that management takes a very close look at its staffing focusing on ANGEL and making necessary adjustments. When we brought this to the attention of the manager on duty he seemed to already know who we were speaking of and I can only conclude that our complaint on this individual was not the first . I really hope that ANGEL gets the much needed attitude adjustment especially for working in an industry that is focused on CUSTOMER SERVICE. i've been coming here for almost 15 years and this is the first time I'm absolutely disgusted by JR's handling of an aggressive and drugged out patron. The whole experience was disappointing to say the least. This man was "saving" a chair for 15+ mins and I wanted to sit down. When I grabbed it, he snatched it with his leg and began a barrage of insults, called me out my name, called me the b word, you name it. I had a friend get security and security failed to remove the patron, even after he threatened to hurt me. This is disappointing as a queer woman. This is supposed to be a safe space for gay and lesbian patrons and here was a man threatening me for trying to sit in his "wife's seat." JR's is supposed to be a fun space but I don't know if it's safe for women anymore. This situation was extremely blown out of proportion and security failed to protect the people JRs claims to serve. What a shame. I don't know if I'll be back for a while. Definitely not on a night where security prioritizes a man's feelings over a woman who simply wanted to sit down. read more

We love JRs for its beautiful patio and cheap drinks. But lately the bar service (particularly the front bar) has been quite slow despite times when there are not many patrons. There is also a foul smell permeating the entire inside bar that has been persistent for the last few months every time we go. We'll always come back because it's our queer home/family, but quality has been lacking. read more

Really strange thing. They have a rule that if you have a large bag they won't let you in. So ladies, if you're planning on coming here, make sure to bring a small purse. We walked in sat down and was Immediately told by an employee that I was not allowed to have a backpack in the bar. I said "so what should I do?" He told me to put it in my car. The spot is pretty neat and spacious, I like the outdoor patio it allows ample space to talk and smoke if you need to. Last December, I was desperately seeking a place for an after-work get-together. Requirements were good music, good finger food and friendly atmosphere. I came here a few times and left disappointed. They don't serve food. So why is it called "Bar & Grill?" I could understand "Bar" - they have friendly bartenders and awesome bar specials. The only "Grill" or something close resemblance to grill is the fence on the beautiful Mediterranean patio. I gave them a 5-star rating for this fabulous renovation. In hot summer nights, they turn on the mist machines. In cold winter nights, they turn on the fire pits. This has been my favorite place to unwind and enjoy the scenery. I drove by a few times during the day, this patio looks like an oasis. I couldn't resist snapping some photos. Years ago, I remember when me and my partner wanted to get some fresh air, we had to go to the crammed patio. This placed used to be crowded inside. Fire pits, misters, games, nice cushioned places to sit. What a great renovation! Whether it's chilly or hot they make it as comfy out here as they can for the weather. Drinks are gay men's bar stout. And they still have specials on Sunday for vodka drinks. I have spent a lot of $1 bills on beverages here over the years on Sundays. Pool tables, Galaga!, big ol' Jenga on the patio...so if you need to play a game or two this is it. We don't care for their half naked guy dancer (hello, middle aged Lesbian here) but if that's your bag they have them! Several bars open at all times. During less crowded afternoons you never have to wait for a drink. The music is a nice mix of old and new, techno and pop. In the afternoons it's not too loud. The first time I came here I really liked it, the vibes were good and though it was packed, it was fun and worth dealing with the crowd. However I recently went back and it was later in the night this time. This time there was a strong police presence so as soon as the bar closed, cops swooped in and it was unsettling. Also a bartender very rudely tried to tell my group as we walked in that he wouldn't serve us as if we were too inebriated when our night had just started. My review is based on the policy of bags and not being able to enter the establishment. I completely understand the security reason for it but if we're stopping men with bags shouldn't the same policy apply to females? A concealed weapon can be carried in a small sachet. So I came into Houston for a conference and this was the first gay bar I stopped at in line of many. This was my favorite one of the night My bartender, Tyler, was attentive, charismatic, and overly positive. The bar was run efficiently and the glasses were clean (unlike another bar I hopped to that evening). While music was playing, it wasn't obnoxiously loud. There's a pool table and there were some go go dancers. My favorite part of the bar was the outdoor are connected to it. Another positive note, the bathrooms were well maintained. I love jrs but i come after work. They do not let you bring in your backpack or computer and I've had it stolen from my car in the parking lots around there multiple times. Hey think they should allow you to bring in your bag when they allow girls to bring in big purses because my laptop is my livelihood. We have been coming here for years. The last two weeks.... we've been suddenly and oddly thrown out after stepping out to the food truck across the road. The "door man" tonight refused us re-entry to retrieve a credit card left behind. Oddly accused us as being drunk. Waved the police over.... trying to intimidate us. The cops were shocked by the "door boys" behavior towards us. All we wanted was our credit card back. We eventually got it back. I guess our point is..... with Covid and lack of business. Why are these fake door men in place yelling at everyone? We are all so shocked and disappointed. Many of us have decided to hang out at Eagle instead. Fabulous place. Best of luck JR's.... Very interesting to say the least. Once you find parking (on a Saturday night) the walk in heels can be a bit daunting so it was nice to get inside and find seating easily. No cover! Then again, most bars don't have a cover...but anyways, I was told by my friend that I probably wouldn't have been able to get in if I wasn't accompanied by him and his partner...odd. But I guess the gay bar needs to be kept that way--gay. I saw maybe 5 other girls in my general vicinity. That being said, I loved their $3 mango margaritas! In my opinion, not particularly strong, but definitely made my taste buds happy :) Dress code was casual. I wore jeans, heels and a fitted shirt while my two guys were both in jeans and t-shirts with tennis shoes. Restrooms were clean, though small. Each time I went, I was the only person (talk about privacy!) Layout of the bar was easy enough; pretty much shaped like a horseshoe. I came here on Halloween one year and I honestly don't remember much about it. I remember doing a once-around and then leaving; that's how packed they were. They have pool tables as well and I got my game on with the boys. Kinda funny though to be watched by a bunch of gay men, but I'm sure they were paying more attention to my friend bending over the table--ha! The music made me want to dance but sadly they don't have a dance floor. Guess that's why this is usually the pre-South Beach spot. We probably would have stayed longer, but none of us wanted to do more damage on the credit card when we had a bottle waiting for us at the house. I only take off two stars because the "A-Ok" is how I felt about it. Service-wise and atmosphere, etc. I rate 5 stars. read more
