I have not been to the club scene for a long while until recently. I only came here because my out-of-town friend visiting. I couldn't believe that was my first time step into South Beach Club (SoBe) since I moved to Houston almost 2 decades ago. Every time I came to SoBe, I got turned away by the long line wrapped around the parking lot before midnight. That's when I normally get off work. But this time, we stopped by on Saturdays. We came super early, like 9:30 pm. Yeah. We got our free pass. Normally, it's $10 cover charge, which isn't bad because there is a huge dance floor with high tech lighting system and sounds system. It was totally worth every penny. Because we love to dance. We adore the music to our liking, more like in the 90's oldies. Yeah, we are older than most people on the dance floor. Thank goodness they didn't kick us out. I remember one night there was a huge group of young Asian guys came in around 10 pm. There were also many birthday celebrations around the seating area. Boy, I would love to sit on a cozy chair after dancing my ass off. Looks like they have some kind of VIP access. There were also girls and straight couples on the dance floor and around the lounge area. Oh, there is a cool patio on the side. Restroom was clean. Looks like there was some kind of upgrades at the club. Yeah. I would definitely return. read more

South Beach was one of the first clubs I've been to in Houston and has been a place I've been returning to with my new friends here in town. If I were to choose a night of the weekend to go, Saturday is the best day because Fridays are pretty dead (unless you like a more empty club so you have room to dance around). There is a cover, which they do take credit card! The music they mostly play is circuit type. I kind of wish they played more Pop/HipHop/Top100 music that everyone can twerk to or drop it low. Like switch it up on the playlist! It doesn't have to be circuit type music all night. I'm sure everyone would appreciate it! Getting service at the bar can be a bit rough. Some of the bartenders are organized and go in order from right to left or vice versa. Others can be a bit slow, inattentive or disorganized. South Beach epitomizes "gay dance club." You've got: multiple levels, a laser light show, black lights, free glow in the dark necklaces, hot oiled-up bods in tighty whities and sneakers dancing on blocks, cutie bartenders (some straight), insanely loud music with DJs from across the country ... and restroom signs that say, "one person per stall." Holla. I've never been to South Beach in Florida, but I can only assume this club is as wild as the town gets. The last time I came here with my (straight) friend Tony, it was because his cousin (also straight) was working the bar, and I'm not one to deny free drinks--they just taste better. It was Thursday's Noche Latina Uncut, and a DJ from Miami was brought into town (The music was so good, I later snagged a cd from him.) After a few shots of "Sex on the South Beach," we made way to the packed dance floor where there was every type of person: gays, straights, transvestites, the "confused," thugs, hipsters, body builders, ladies and more. When things got too hot, South Beach unleashes the Liquid Ice Jets which instantly drop the temp 20 degrees; you literally can't see the person in front--or behind--you when that happens, so watch out! I happened to find myself dancing with a French male flight attendant from Canada (not kidding) who claimed to be gay, but after a few sneaked in feelskies, I realized this wasn't true--that or he was just messing with me. Biting my bum was the last straw and I quickly turned to him, pointed my finger and scolded: "No! You are not gay!" and stormed off. Ahh, anything can happen at South Beach. Besides the way I've seen management treat their staff, my only complaint is that they almost always have a cover, ranging from $10-$20. For a gal who can certainly ring up a bar tab, I'm not a fan of covers. However, they're open super late night (think 5am), so they gotta make their extra dough somehow. So I'm gay and 20 and the first thing I did when I moved to Houston was look for the best gay bars/clubs to go to (ones that allow people under 21, of course) and the very first thing that popped up in all the search engines was South Beach. And whenever I would ask pretty much anyone I met in Houston where I should go if I wanna dance, they would say "have you gone to South Beach?". It's a place for everyone! It's not just a gay club. It's an experience. It's definitely an experience and of course it made me want to go there when I found out there was no cover on Friday nights (I basically go there every Friday night). The music ranges from "oh my god i love this song!" to "is this even music?" but the music is constantly upbeat and I generally don't stop dancing until I'm told to leave. I've met some pretty awesome people there it never fails to put me in a good mood. I'm told drinks are cheap and get you where you want to be. They even have a patio where you can cool off and talk to all the other people. It is as good as it gets when it comes to dancing. They even have a like dry ice or smoke or something that comes down from the ceiling. It comes down for minutes at a time and you can't even your own hand in front of your face. This nightclub is great! It's not a megaclub with 2 stories or anything like that, but it is definitely very trendy and very popular in Houston. Go-go boys, laser lights, cool fog shot, ice bar, small lounge, sleek and modern -- SoBe style. Music is good and loud. DJs usually make a stop here when they're touring. Popular with gays since this is Montrose. And SoBe is one of their mecca. Because it is Texas, last call is 1 am. But they close the club at 5 in the morning. There are plenty of 24 hours establishments to eat afterwards nearby. Plenty of streetside parking. The later you come, the farther you'll have to park. You may have to park on the other side of Montrose Blvd. Free admission between 10:30 and 11 on Fridays and Saturdays. Saturdays are 18 and up. Went on a Sunday night around 11:30pm, cover was $5. We told the cashier we were a bachelorette group and the bride got in for free. The place is huge. Three bars, two sets of bathrooms and the dance floor was good size, the fog does get frigid, can see the use when the floor is packed with dancers. I like the go go boxes, were definitely used by the boys. Only one set of bathrooms were open and that one was near the dance floor. I went into the women's room and thought I was in the wrong one at first since guys were coming out of the stalls...and not alone. The bathroom floors are wet with lord knows what, don't put anything down. Sunday is Drag queen night, so a show is put on, came out as Tina Turner, JLo, etc and you give them money. Too fun. Place wasn't crowded at all on a Sunday night. There is a body builder in briefs dancing on stage near another bar, us girls kept feeding him dollar bills. Parking is heinous, I lucked out with street parking, their lot fills up quickly because there are other gay clubs and bars on the same street. There was a little drama with one guy, he seemed to be having a little hissy fit and threw a stool at some dancers on the gogo boxes...a little jealous tete a tete?....hmmmmm Same sort of drama in straight clubs! read more

I've been here more times than I can count over the years. Definitely the best dance club in Houston, regardless of whether you're gay or straight. It's a younger (like 18-30 years old) gay crowd that's predominantly male. I've brought a mixture of friends, both gay and straight, who always have a good time. Good place to mingle with strangers as well. No need to be shy here. Saturdays are the best nights to come. The DJ that spins on saturdays never fails to get people up and dancing. You won't find hip hop music here-- it's almost strictly electro-house/remixes of Top 40 songs. My favorite in a club environment. Free cover before 11pm, usually with a text message that is sent out by them. I advise that you should be in line no later than 10:15pm if possible because the line gets pretty long. Parking in the area kind of sucks if you don't get there early enough. There's plenty of 5 dollar parking lots around the club. If you're under 21, be prepared to fill out a short consent form upon entering the club. Upon entering, it's dimly lighted with lounge couches and a bar. Walk around and you'll find access to the outdoor patio and the dance floor/numerous other bars in the club. There's a huge dance floor with plenty of laser lights and huge speaker boxes you can climb up on and dance on (it's best when the club is packed!). Periodically when the club is packed, they will activate the laser nitrogen jets that feel amazing. It's like being blasted with 50 degree air. Be prepared though-- it's really loud. Peak hours are midnight-2am. Plenty of people, plenty of drinks, plenty of good times. When the dance floor is packed, it's seriously the best. Decently priced drinks throughout the night that are strong. Staff is pretty strict about underage drinking, so don't try that here if you are underage. There is always staff walking around and checking. If you get caught, you get thrown out. In the end, highly recommended. read more

So this is a review written by a straight woman, for straight women. This club is one of the biggest, miami-club-scene-like clubs here in Houston. Lots of space to hang out, no issues with creepy guys hitting on you, and lots and lots of people-watching. LOTS. I could have just sat in a chair all night and been perfectly content because there was so much to see. The problem here was all about the music. All house music with the DJ trying to mix up slow, depressing Adele songs into dance-able beats? I don't think so. After dining in the area at Sorento's, my posse wanted to dance thanks to some great wine with dinner. Yelp recommended this club, so using the great verbal Yelp driving directions, we found ourselves in gay bar heaven. That being said, we weren't the only straight couples there, and were made very welcome. Only ten dollar cover was reasonable as were the drink prices. The decor was nice, the tunes hot, the lights and effects fun. I especially enjoyed the male dancers along one wall! South Beach is bright, loud, and unashamed. Just what you want in a bar that is all about dancing and drinking. I admit, it takes me a few drinks before I can get out on the dance floor and shake it like I just don't care. Honestly, before the drinks I do care - entirely too much for a place like South Beach. If you've been to Kiss and Fly in Austin, this club may be bigger with better equipments but it pales in comparison in term of music. Last night we've been there around 10:30 to get in with no cover and that was swell. Everyone came in, bought $3 shots over and over. They played only 5-6 Top 40s' at most so early when no one was dancing yet. Most of the night consist of ONLY House. It was so sad. This is a gay club not even one Lady GaGa song played that night. Most of the people just stood around and it's like the DJ couldn't even feel the crowd. The only dance-able beat were the up ones but the DJ insisted on playing a lot of the slow beat ones. Fail. Of course it could've been that night in particular. I could only remember ONE night where it was Top 40 and other good music that were dance-able to. But now it just literally suck. Hire a new DJ that could feel the crowd or atleast update the website like other clubs here in Austin so people know what nights to avoid coming to. We all would like to know what music would be playing that night, I could guarantee that much. The bartenders were friendly and hot. Only thing that made the night bearable. So for many years, when I used to eat near by at the late night eateries, I would wonder what was at South Beach? From the outside it looks so glamorous and they always had the spot lights drawing attention. Well I finally got a chance to come here. My fiancee and her friends after a night of bar hopping, wanted to continue dancing! So they all threw out South Beach. I had never attended so was completely open to the idea. There was a cover charge! I guess after hours has their rules. When inside it's not as amazing as I had hoped it to be outside. There is a small main dance floor with platform boxes all around. I've traveled all over the world and have been to hundreds of clubs of all kinds and can honestly say that South Beach in Houston is by far one of the very best there is. Definately the #1 dance bar in Texas, Gay or Straight. The music and house Dj's are major and the dance floor is smoking hot until the liquid nitrogen (or whatever it is) cooling system explodes on it's inhabitants from above. For the most part the staff is friendly and I'm talking about the bartenders, especially Leo in the front bar. The management thinks that they own the place and have forgetten that philantropist Charles Armstrong actually owns it and they can be very rude when contronted. Some of the other staff in the booth (not the Dj's) can real bithces too. I've been told by staffers that it has something to do with an agreement they had to sign in order to keep their jobs....oh well, too bad so sad!!! The shows are really great and they currently hav e the Queen of Houston performing there Ms. Kourtney Van Wales so showtimes at SoBe are always a treat. This has basically been the place that I spent most of my twenties. It was the place I use to celebrate my birthdays at and it was always a crazy time. Granted this was during the time that they use to have time minors fill out the forms outside on a foldable table. Im kind of showing my age by saying that. The craziest place to be during halloween is outside this place. They brings me to my next point. I really enjoy all the events that this place puts together especially when people for RuPauls Drag Race comes along. Ended up here after earlier plans fell through. A friend had told me about South Beach, so I knew what I was walking into and my fiance and his buddies (all straight) were awesome and said they would take me (I had to go out and shake my booty). Parking sucked, but again we knew this coming and it was past 10 when we made it there, we will definitely pay for parking next time :P No cover, that was awesome (Friday)! No one was really dancing yet so I headed out to dance and within a few minutes it really picked up. Plenty of room, fun go go dancers, even more fun people. Bathrooms are clean too (well at least the women's)!! Only bad experience, which really has nothing to do with the club per se because bad service happens anywhere...our female bartender I think was new, she was not very attentive at all, like we stood there for a long time and she would avoid us...weird. But my fiance did get out of there with a $10 bar tab!!! Can't beat that. I was the DD so I was drinking water which is free....from certain bartenders. One guy wanted to charge me for tap water, I slid it right back to him and got one from someone else. I get that they are a club, need to make money, yada yada but when my friends are drinking like fishes...please hook up the girl that has to drive them home with some water please!!! And the music...now it could have been mixed waaaaaay better. I have been a club goer for longer than I care to say and I never had as hard a time dancing as I did here! The transitions were off and it made it hard to dance seamlessly from song to song. I mean I danced anyway but it was a lot harder to get into the music when the tempo would change so abruptly. Quite a few build ups went flat too. The cooling jets are amazing...VERY LOUD...but worth it. It cools so quickly and it's super fun to have someone to be cuddling and kissing on when you can't see anything!! But now the fun part!! I pretty much danced solo a part from my group I came with but I had no problem with finding someone to dance with! Everyone is there to have a good time and most of the people had a smile plastered to their face. Got to talk to a lot of guys about this and that while dancing, exchange a lot of compliments, learned some new dance moves and even got lifted in the air a few times like a freaking ballerina!!! Most everyone was so respectful which was a nice change of pace since guys (usually meaning straight ones) are huge douche bags in clubs. When I went up to the bar for some H2O, I saw a lonely go go dancer kind of standing there for a min..I told him to shake the booty, he danced for me and I even asked if I could join him. He said not on that area but he showed me a place to get up on out on the floor and we danced!!! So much fun!!! And they were passing out free glow sticks..I don't care how old you are...people love glow sticks :) Great fun, great atmosphere and I will absolutely be going back!! read more

I went to South Beach for the first time with a group of friends, which includes straight and gay people. We all had a great time. We went Friday night, can I say, no cover before 11 PM? Also it's $5 after, but with a club that looks as posh as this, it's pocket change for a very clean and very well run club. I found the people there friendly, outgoing, and very approachable. Right as I walked in a person just ran up to me and complimented me on "how pretty I was". What a great start to the night! It doesn't stop there. There are three areas, a lounge area in the front with ample seating, a dance floor with wicked lighting, dry ice, and strobe effects in the back, and an outdoor smoking area off to the side. It didn't get too crowded when I was there, which is a plus. My first impression of the dance floor was that it was wicked and reminded me of some clubs in the Meatpacking district in NYC. The only downside was that the music was very loud and when the dry ice fog machine was warming up it sounded like white noise which was extremely annoying and I was afraid I was going to lose my hearing. That lasted for around a minute before you were deluded in freezing dry ice that almost scared me for a split second when it was seemingly never ending and I felt oxygen deprived. Another plus were the three very sexy half naked men standing in the corner wearing underwear. When I approached one he was very friendly and can I repeat, very hot??! Whoo, he was a specimen. While I'm on the positives, the drinks were very reasonably priced and not bad. I will definitely come to this club again. read more

I had a complete blast when I came here with friends, mostly because I go to dance clubs to shake my ass to dance music, not Top 40. For that I can just turn on a radio and dance around in my house. Music was great - drinks were pretty strong, but pricey (it may have been after happy hour, which is completely fine) - the liquid ice system was beyond amazing, a nice refreshing cooling sensation, especially when you've been shaking your groove thing all night. Not sure if DJ Skinner is still around but he played an awesome array of cutting edge dance music that evening. The sound system in that place is pretty kick-ass! The clientele can be a bit snobby but don't pay attention to those queeny prima donnas, they primarily stick to themselves and leave the cool people alone. You'll also come across a few clubbers who are, umm... under the influence of drugs? But they mostly mind their own business. The dancers were a nice touch! What a great spot to go dancing! What I like best about South Beach is that it has something for everyone: if you don't like to dance, you can hang-out at any of the multiple bars, the lounge in the front of the club, or out on the patio. But if you want to dance, there is ample room! South Beach boasts one of the biggest dancefloors I've seen in a gay club. The again, I'm from Chicago, so there isn't as much space to expand. It was nice to not have to worry about bumping into everyone when dancing. That did happen, however, at certain points throughout the night as it was Britney Spears night. And you know we love us the hot mess known as B. Spears! I was really surprised at how diverse the crowd was: young and old(er), people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and orientations were there. How refreshing! Me thinks the Chicago scene could take a lesson from South Beach. The only drawback for me, was the cover. I'm not sure if it was so expensive because of the special event, but it was $15. Luckily, my friend and I arrived before 10pm, and it was free! But I'm willing to overlook the expensive cover, since South Beach definitely delivers for the price. read more

If you go to the restroom there is a long wait for the urinals because all the guys there are cruising for sex instead of urinating... come on... you can do that in the parking lot! Everyone was so friendly and it was not too crowded where it would be stuffy like some other places. Lots of good music and we had the best waitress, ChynaDoll who was so very attentive in making sure we continuously had our drink orders in and our area secure. This is what people think of when they go to a gay dance club unfortunately not for me. The club claims to be high energy but the drinks and drunks aren't. The whole thing seems like you can't get drunk and the people who are have predrunk before going to the bar. I had 5 vodka drinks and barely felt anything with no hangover after. I'm under 21 so my experience is probably very limited. But I love South Beach, they host all my favorite drag queens and the music is great. The DJ knows what he's doing and its nonstop dancing for me. Although I am a club kid, the speakers here are insane. At some point my head started to hurt and my ears felt like they were going to explode. But I didn't notice it as much on the dance floor, so it wasn't that big of a deal. Waters are $1.75 for a cup and $3 for a bottle, which isn't that bad since I didn't even pay a cover (make sure you have your text and come before 10!).
