Really cute spot that serves basic lunch menu items to leave you full and satisfied. I was greeted nicely by the cashier who recommended some drinks and allowed me to have a sample to see what's refreshing enough. I ordered the cheeseburger and French fries, cooked fresh in front of you. The setting is comfortable with benches outside with shade and inside had wooden colorful designs as were in a sand bar in California . Cool vibe. The burger was delicious!!! It's was cooked well but juicy, the toppings of lettuce, pickles and a slab of mixed tangy mayo and ketchup hit the spot! The bun is also enjoyable, nice and soft . Not like these big over the top gourmet buns where it can't fit in your mouth lol. The French fries are zesty! They should note it on the menu somehow, it will be way to spicy for my daughter if she had it. But I enjoyed the flavor very much. It is very seasoned with paprika , salt and pepper. Rippers was the closest joint for some food after a long day of beaching and boozing. They've got a serious monopoly on their stretch of the boardwalk. It's an open air, wait on line, fight for seating kind of place. These places always seem to show up near the beach. The line was huge, but moved pretty quickly. The staff is definitely efficient and used to the crowds and man do they crank out some food. They have beer, and it's pretty cheap. And it's cold. That's really all you're looking for when it's 85 and sunny. And thank god it's on a separate line from the food, so it moves faster (a little). The location can't be beat; it's right on the boardwalk, with a beautiful view. They need more seating. We were lucky to grab a spot for four, but were literally rubbing elbows with your tablemates and/or strangers. I guess you can always take food back to the beach, but cheese fries and sand don't mix well together. The music was great. A selection of choice punk throwbacks which kept the staff on their toes. The food is a little pricy. $9 bucks for a fish torta with a piece of fish approximately two by three inches on a squishy hamburger roll. Torta needs a crusty bun... No side of any sort. It's not to say that it wasn't good, it was. With some tasty pickled onions and cabbage on there; a squirt of lime to cut the sour. Good stuff. But the price point is a little much. Throw in some fries, charge me 10 bucks, I'd be happy. On it's own though, meh. I could easily eat three of them. I guess the premium you're paying is for the location, which again, really can't be beat. The cheeseburger was nothing to write home about. Wasn't great, wasn't bad. TL;DR? This place is just everything bad. Everything. If something annoys you, you can probably find it here. The name even annoys me. Okay, so I can't fault Rippers for the heat. I can fault them for their patio doing almost nothing to keep its sweltering patrons cool, though. I am pretty fair-skinned, so I like to keep out of the sun, especially while eating/drinking. I don't think I'm alone in this, though I realize that certainly not everyone agrees. It's kind of unappetizing to try to eat hot food while the sun is just beating down and you're stuck in the patio because your friend got a beer and you can't take it out of the roped-off area. It's also unappetizing to be sitting there trying to finish your food and the music changes from reasonably acceptable 80's tunes that the sunburned hipsters are hopping around to, into the screeches of some live band they scraped out of the deepest recesses of adolescence. I'm sorry, I know. It's a gig, everyone has to start somewhere, and I am being somewhat unkind, but WHO EVEN PLAYS METAL ANYMORE. Whoever started the trend of doing that screaming-into-the-mic kind of "singing" should be strung up. That cacophony drove us out, unfinished beer and all, and we could still hear the band from our towel kind of far away. Even though I ended up not finding the stands I was particularly looking for, I ended up settling on Rippers and ordering the Fish Torta with a side of fries. Both were tasty, delicious, and hit the spot. I was tempted to get a frozen drink too, but the torta and fries alone were quite pricey, so I refrained. All in all, it was a satisfying eating experience, though, and not one I regret since go to the Rockaway Beach so infrequently. read more

My wife got the fish torta and it was absolutely delicious. I should have got that myself but the cheeseburger was delicious as well. Not overwhelmingly sweet, and came with a cute cherry on top. Atmosphere: Crowded! But it was a Saturday night, so to be expected. Quick service, even with long lines. The crowd wasn't too rowdy, but it was only around 7/7:30PM when we arrived, so not too sure on the late night crowd. What a nice surprise - in the middle of the Rockaways! It's nice to see conscientious, in-touch business people tapping into this market and creating, well, something from almost nothing. The food: one of the best burgers I've ever had, and I forgot to order with my favorites so it was a pretty stripped-down burger, still tender, juicy and fresh. The fries were unique and interesting and great! Service: super friendly. Even the line cooks were quick with a smile and a can-do attitude. EVERYONE there was accommodating and and friendly. Who cares that you have to wait over an hour for your humble meal of burger and fries.. it gets crazy on a busy day at Rippers, but when the Rockaways gets hot, you just can't get mad after what their community has been through after Sandy. As crazed as they get, they really do have an effective system (well, numbers over names would probably work better, guys!), but more importantly, the line cooks and kitchen staff fly off the handle bars in trying to get food out as fast as possible without skimping on quality control. The woman line cook is a total badass.. I couldn't take my eyes off her for the majority of our hour-long wait, and I observed her moving and grooving like an army general, fully in control in the midst of the chaos. The burgers are delicious, and worth the wait. They have fish tortas, which I'd like to try whenever I get the chance to visit again. Also, if you cannot find a seat when the place gets swarmed, you can always sit on a bench on the boardwalk, or take your grub to the beach. Just be careful of the birds! Yesterday I had the unfortunate experience of arriving at Ripper's at about the same time as the health inspector. After waiting in line for about 10 minutes, I was indifferently informed by the monotoned cashier that they, "Weren't serving food at the time being because they were being health inspected. If you want to wait it should only be 10-15 minutes, but there's a bar line over there." I informed her that I had already been waiting ten minutes in line and I didn't understand why I hadn't been told upon entering the restaurant that they weren't serving food. She replied, "I can understand your aggravation, but we just want to make sure everything's okay during the inspection." I replied, "I'm not aggravated, I just think you should tell all these people waiting in line behind me that you won't be serving any of them food." Eventually they put out a sandwich board saying that the kitchen is closed. I saw several employees skittering behind the counter, one of whom was removing all the raw meat from the grill station. Why can't this restaurant run during a health inspection? Are their day-to-day operations so far below health code that they can't keep flipping burgers while the health inspector takes temperatures behind the line? Also, might I mention sleeveless T's for the manager behind the line with such thick armpit hairs might not be such a great idea? read more

Here's where I rip into Rippers. I had been to Rockaway Beach on Sunday and my experience at Rippers was fine as there was a ten or so minute wait. Monday (Memorial Day), however, was a total shitshow. The wait to get food was ONE FUCKING HOUR. That was just to order - waiting for our food took an additional 45 MINUTES. We squandered whatever sun was out waiting in fucking line for food. You people can't hire more staff or have someone coming down the line taking orders? The fries were soggy on Sunday, but guess what, they ran out altogether on Monday while we were waiting in line. That, and the guacamole, which comes with the nachos, which we ordered along with veggie burgers. So, no fries, no guacamole on the nachos, and the cheese on the veggie burgers wasn't actual cheese, they apparently also ran out of the kind of cheese you put on burgers and just threw some shredded cheese on there. Fine, first world problems, wah wah whatever. I waited in line for a fucking hour - I could have been sitting on the beach for an hour and 45 minutes. I'm entitled to bitch about some french fries, or lack of. Oh, and then I get to deal with surly, unapologetic teenagers and their fucking attitudes when I finally get my food. UGH. What a fucking nightmare. Also, attention, vegetarians, I'm pretty sure the melted cheese that they put on the fries is flavored with burger grease. Going the Clif Bar and homemade sandwich route next time. Never again. Do not even bother with this place when the weather gets warmer and more people are at the beach unless you're okay with wasting half your day for subpar food instead of actually enjoying whatever scraps of warm, sunny weather we'll be thrown this year. read more
