I'm not a huge fan of burgers, but I've had Rippers' cheeseburgers twice during my weeklong Rockaways stay! I'll probably get it one more time before I leave. Located near the 86th street bathrooms and right on the beach, this is one of the few food/drink places right on the boardwalk. The food is good albeit definitely overpriced, so I suggest just going with a fries and can of beer. The fries were really very good and I was so pleasantly surprised at the overflowing basket of fries and the amazing seasoning on them. The other items on the menu looked to be on the small side, weren't that tasty, or just plain expensive. A definite pro is that there's a very spacious and clean outdoor seating area with plenty of picnic benches. It's a nice place to enjoy a your noms in the shade but beware the teenagers smoking (despite all the no smoking signs) and the folks applying spray sunscreen right next to you eating your food.... read more

Rippers is the perfect way to start, or end, a day at the beach. I've only ever ordered the burger and fries, and the food is tasty and cooked well every time. There are two lines, one to order food, which is closer to the entrance, and one for drinks, which is located in the back of the space. The kitchen is in the middle, and that's where folks wait for their orders. It runs pretty smoothly, and even when the lines are long, the staff is friendly and get orders out quickly. The booze situation is great as they have many options--do not sleep on the Beach Juice. I don't know what's in it but it tastes great and does the job. They also have frozen drinks every now and then, and lots of beer options to choose from. You can take your food and beverages out into the sitting area, which is shaded and where featured bands play on the weekends or in the evening. The vibe is very laid back and casual. Bonus for being located near the restrooms. Chances are if I'm at the beach, I'm setting up my towel within walking distance from Rippers. read more

I'm not to sure what people expect for a beach shack/food spot with the live DJ in Far Rockaway, but Rippers is a good time right on the boardwalk with unobstructed view of the ocean. They have DJs playing fairly popular music for all listeners, sells decent drinks (alcoholic and non) and food that smells pretty good (everyone around us was enjoying whatever they ordered). We enjoyed our drinks and they even have sturdy paper cups and straws! The prices are pretty cheap and the crowd is relaxed, what more could you ask for? read more

A legit Strong 4 & a half....Although Rockaway Taco was the launching pad of this "Bushwick on the beach" triangle that has blossomed around this 20 some blocks of boardwalk and the streets cushioning it in the last few years, in my opinion this place is the Jewel in its crown, and perhaps most perfectly represents the best of what this scene is all about. Growing up in Long Island I would never have believed that any municipal Robert Moses era boardwalk concession booth would be home to such incredible food with a wild scene, and perfect view of the sanctioned surfing spot and all the passing hipster fashionistas walking the boardwalk and beach, to accompany it. Now, in its second year, i think the place has really hit its groove, and is significantly better than it was last year. For example last year while I always found the insanely good cheese fries to be among the best in the city, as I still do, the burgers could be perfectly executed on one occasion, and dried out the next. Hot dogs likewise could be a bit inconsistent. These kinks seemed to have been completely worked out by now, & I feel like you can pretty much expect whatever you get to be excellent. I'm very happy they worked it out, considering the quality of meat is top notch and supplied by the brilliant Meat Hook butcher that operates out of the Brooklyn Kitchen in Williamsburg, and its a shame to not showcase it perfectly all the time. Making things even better is the fact that both the food and drink menus have greatly expanded this year. Specials frequently appear, particularly in weekdays, when I am lucky enough to occasionally end up during my workday. Breakfast Burritos make pretty frequent appearances, and the black bean one was likely the best I have ever had. I wasn't anywhere near as taken with the chorizo version, which didn't include the avocado at all, but it was by no means bad and I scarfed it down with no problem whatsoever. Other specials have included a Maryland Style crab boil, blueberry johnny cakes, and perhaps the most frequent of all, a whole deep fried porgy served atop a huge pile of those excellent fries. The best thing of all to eat that the place serves in my opinion however, is not a special, but a new permanent menu item that I am pretty sure was added this summer, the Fish Torta. Way less Mexican leaning then the name might imply, its far more similar to something I know as simply a fish sandwich, or Fishwich, served like the burgers on a potato roll. Its grilled and not fried, and impeccably so. Its incredibly delicious served perfectly by the slightly spicy house sauce, and beautifully fresh cabbage. It is now tied with The Dock in Montauk for my all time favorite fish sandwich. As I said, the drinks have improved as much as the food. While last year the place was beer only and limited to vile bud bud light along with tall boys of Narragansett beer, which is basically New England's version of Pabst, meaning Kitschy and cheap but really bad tasting. Things are helped greatly now by the addition of some more beers including Sixpoint cans, and best of all in my book, Bluepoint Summer on tap for the wholly reasonable price of 5 bucks a cup. They have also finally gotten approval to ad the classic frozen beach drinks to the stand, and offer all the stalwarts, Margarita, Pina Coladas, Blue Hawaiians. The most incredible drinks aren't the alcoholic varieties of any kind however, but the astounding Smoothies and juices. If there are any better ones in existence, I have yet to come across them. There so delicious its hard to believe they have such good health benefits, which I am insisting to believe they do! OK the place is not cheap, but again the quality is uniformly excellent, and while the staff is pretty much as extreme in its hipsterism as possible, for the most part, with only a couple of exceptions, they are far far friendlier and courteous than you could ever imagine them being. My grandma always said, don't judge a book by its cover! Like everywhere else around here at this point however, just be prepared to deal with massive crowds and waits on any weekend visit you make all summer long, and judging by the increase in popularity here from last year, i don't think they will be getting any smaller anytime soon. read more

Solidly in my top five in NYC. The fries are also perfectly made, well seasoned. I feel like Rippers has become a holiday occasion for me, as I've driven down to Rockaway just for their burger on Labor Day 2014, and Memorial Day 2015. There will be a line. There will be annoying people on the line. The staff will be hilarious, the prices right, and you will wait for your burger (ideally, a double cheeseburger with extra guac, possibly a fish torta, definitely fries with or without cheese and chili) for about 20 minutes at peak hours, hopefully with a beer in hand. Then, you will fight for table space. Then, you will have an awesome burger and your beer with a nice beach breeze and a great view. My cheeseburger was overcooked (no pink in sight), but not a surprise for this type of restaurant. They don't ask how you want your burger cooked (again no surprise) and it looked like they use frozen packaged patties. Overpriced at $8.50 but again, not surprised for the convenience and beach. The generous third star is because it is on the boardwalk, near public restrooms, has an outdoor seating area, and alcohol. Great spot for them; meh food option for beachgoers. read more

These are some seriously good burgers! I finally visited Rippers on July 4th this year, and the line took...only 10 minutes. So already a feather in Rippers cap for good crowd management. (Major props for splitting the food and booze lines.) The burgers here are a little pricey, but they are quite good. I ordered their cheeseburger - a thick juicy patty with melted American cheese with lettuce, pickles, and a tangy special sauce with a fluffy potato bun. The crispiness of the grilled burger is nicely balanced by the soft bun, and the burgers are made fresh, so you're eating them only minutes after they've come off the grill. The fries are also excellent. They are nice and crispy, with a paprika-filled spice blend to boot. Further bonus points for the abundance of picnic tables to eat at, and the $4 tallboys of Narrangasett (the ideal summer BBQ companion). The prices are high here for a beach shack - a meal will probably come out over $10 easily - but the summer vibe, killer soundtrack (lots of Bruce), and tasty 'noms more than make up for it. read more

I enjoy the vibe of this place, but yes, it is extremely hipster, which is fine. I've had fun here in the past just drinking. I saw this band "The Workout" here in 2012 and they were a blast. So let's get to the food service. I understand the line is long because there aren't any places to eat. However, they should seriously reorganize the order/pick up system. Give a number out or something because everyone working is drunk and it's loud. So many names didn't match the orders. Multiple times I saw a line cook eating fries out of people's food while cooking them and chugging a beer. I understand it's supposed to be laid back and fun, but I'm pretty sure that is a pure violation of health code. No gloves, drinking beer, and eating patrons food in front of our faces. I don't mind them enjoying a few beers, just wear gloves. I guarantee everyone here was intoxicated/careless and I'm not sure where their hands have been. All I know is that every single one of my friends got horribly sick, including myself. So thank you for my food poisoning. It's too bad because this place is fun. Since last summer, Rockaway has exploded with dining options--and the crowds have scaled up to match. The line at Rockaway Taco was 20 deep on Sunday, leaving our mouths as dry as day-old tortillas. That option dashed, we headed down to the boardwalk at 96th, where a bevy of food vendors have taken over, under the direction of Rockaway Taco folks. There's Thai fast food, an outpost of Rockaway Taco (sans tacos, just flautas and chips) and Motorboat & the Big Banana, southern-fried fish, chicken and fries--and frozen bananas, of course. Unfortunately none of these places had planned for every kid in Williamsburg to show up with an appetite. Thai food had closed up shop by 3:30pm, food stash completely gobbled up. Not even a bottle of water to be found! And Motorboat & the Big Banana was fished out. Two strikes. We headed down the boardwalk to 86th to our last resort--Rippers. Not nearly as crowded, and we successfully placed an order for a cheeseburger, fries and an "Ecuadorian"--a lip-smacking slurry of cucumber, mint & agave. The burger was decent, not extra-well-done as indicated in the Times review. In fact it was pinker than you might like a burger to be at a boardwalk grill. The fries were tasty, somewhere between the fresh-cut style of In'n'Out and the reconstituted fry-sticks at the major burger chains. The best thing about Rippers is without a doubt the dining room--a half a dozen wooden picnic tables chilling on the boardwalk. Ocean views all around. Which always makes the food taste better (and earns 'em a third star) That, if nothing else, should be reason enough to grab a seat. read more

Rippers NY Far Rockaway 12pm Monday 11th July 2016 Four Stars We somehow make it to Far Rockaway Beach and wandered to 86th Street to enjoy some food and booze on this fine Monday afternoon. We ate cheese fries, a hamburger, and a breakfast burrito and then washed it down with peach slurpee and budlight tan can. The cheese fries were overflowing out of the standard red and white checkered basket. The fries were crispy and covered with lawry's seasoning. The cheese sauce was made with actual cheese but it solidified as it cooled. They were quite delicious. The Hamburger was standard. soft bun, freshly grilled beef, melted cheddar cheese, pieces of romaine lettuce, tomato all of which was skewered by a yellow plastic sword tooth pick. The breakfast burrito had eggs, bacon, beans, sour cream, and guacamole add-on. It was very mediocre. On Seven Eleven, we had our second slurpee of the day with this alcoholic peach frozen drink. We sat outside on picnic table with all the other tattoo diners. There is also a solar powered charging station right next to the table closest to the beach. read more

The section of the beach Rippers is at is more peaceful and clean than the rest of Rockaway Beach. Rippers is on the boardwalk but that goes for the board walk and bathrooms too. The bathroom attendant here is friendly and knows about the one by Caracus. She said so many complained about that bathroom attendant but nothing was done she had the toilet seats off the toilets the entire summer! This section of the beach is more peaceful and I think the people at this section mostly live in Rockaway or they are at the beach every day. There is a surfer beach right next to it. The toilet seats stay on the toilets here! All of the locals on the beach and surfers all hug each other and even hug security and bathroom attendants. It all has a different feel from the rest of the beach. There were church groups here and youth groups and large family picnics. Rippers has a similar feel to the beach here because it is the same crowd as on the beach here. All l had was fries so far but they were yummy cheese fries. I haven't tried the fish sandwich yet. Hopefully next year. I was not that hungry when we went. They had a nice band and dancing but a more peaceful crowd than further down the beach. Rippers has upscale boardwalk food reinvented. I would like to see a more extensive menu next year. I am hoping they read this and expand their menu. This section of the beach is actually much nicer than the rest IMO and for that reason I give Rippers 4 stars though I like Caracus more. The ladies rooms are not usable near Caracus and the lines are usually 45 minutes. Here there were only short civilized lines. Friendly staff and a much easier atmosphere.
