This establishment in Melrose is not just a place to grab a bite and a pint; it's a delightful journey back to Revolutionary American history with a modern twist. One of the most impressive aspects of Rising Eagle is their excellent beer selection. As an avid beer enthusiast, I appreciate the freshness and variety offered here. Being new to the area I decided to pop in for a drink. I had a great beer & met a lovely bartender named Mikayla. A week later I stopped by again to have a bite to eat & sat at Mikaylas bar. I very much enjoyed her service as well as her food & drink suggestions. While observing Kathi caught my eye. She was so involved with the customers that I had to ask if she was the GM! Alright, let me begin by saying I had sworn to never go to the Rising Eagle. The concept of waiting on line, ordering at a bar, and then self-seating felt a bit fast-food for an establishment of this caliber. However, my husband and I gave it a shot tonight as it was not too crowded. We were pleasantly surprised! We reviewed the menu outside before entering. Upon going inside, the hostess welcomed us and explained the concept. We walked up to the bar/Order Here sign and placed our orders. We got: -avocado toast -wings -Balt sandwich -burger -mead -soda -dessert Walking from the bar with drinks was a bit inconvenient as I did spill some of my beverage all over my hand. Other than that, we found a table and had a seat. The wooden spoon was our tab number and our waitress was lovely. The moment you enter the dining room area, it becomes a traditional restaurant experience. Everything we had was delicious! That was a well welcomed treat. Our bill total was $65. Staff it's terrific, personal, attentive- they do a fine job of balancing friendly interaction without prolongued time The food has been excellent each time we have been here. Shoutout to the tater tots!!! I am not generally a big fan of 'tater tot' but this restaurant has a fantastic, cheesy, crispy, mmm!, plate. Good food, decent drinks - kinks to work out. You enter the restaurant and wait to order food and drinks in line. You then proceed to a table with a wooden spoon that has your order number. A few problems with this 1) there aren't enough menus dispersed when waiting in line that people don't know what they want once they order 2) the wooden spoons are so small it takes the waiters a while to find your table to deliver the order 3) if you're with a family waiting to order isn't convenient 4) you can order only to realize there aren't any free tables Fries were okay- aioli was nice but fries were salty. Chicken wings were cold w/ a slight amount of smoke which I appreciated but they could have used more flavor overall. Cocktail was good but both times I've been they were half full. Wine is served in cups rather than wine glasses . They follow an all american vibe from a comfort food menu and decor to american wine . The ambiance is very comfy and resembles a cozy pub. This place is exactly what Melrose (and perhaps many other towns) needed. When they say Publick House - they mean it! Think old England and this is what you're entering when you step inside Rising Eagle. Grab a menu, stand in line while picking your food and beverage, then take a spoon with a number (handed to you with your drink of choice) and seat yourself! The food comes to the table and you pay at the table, but the rest is very Publick House. Not to mention the interior - which fits the theme but is also gorgeous! (Don't worry sports fans - the fully stocked bar has 2 large televisions) The food was delicious! We ordered the braised beef grilled cheese, a burger, fries, and tempura fried green beans and all were excellent. The first bite of the grilled cheese made me feel like I was in heaven, and I was too full to even eat all the fried apps we ordered... but they were too good to leave, so we had to get a box to take them home! The cocktails we ordered were superb and I definitely would've gone for a round two if it hadn't been a Tuesday night. Can't wait to come back with friends! I had been waiting for this place to open for a while, heard that it had, so that weekend went to check them out. First and foremost, it's a novelty experience; by that, the style of dining/service isn't like any other I've seen in the area. It's worth knowing that, and what that means before going. The Rules: If you go during a busy time, you'll likely see a line all the way to the entrance. Don't be put-off by that. It's a seat yourself, community seating restaurant. There's one person that takes your drink order as well as your apps (tho you can place your entire order all at once BUT it will then all come out at once). Slide past the order-taker, and grab your drinks from the bar, and wander the restaurant to find a suitable table. They have high-tops, long tables, and "normal" tables. If you sit at a table that has extra seats, others are welcome/encouraged to join you, so choose wisely if that matters to ya. There are waitresses/waiters, though it's quite frenetic/chaotic. You can (read - have to) procure your own carafe of water and water glasses. Onto my experience. There was a long line when we arrived, and it being my first time, wasn't sure what to expect. There's a pseudo hostess that didn't really explain the above, but enough that I understood that I was to order and would then be seated, that the line goes quickly (enough). We went to place our order, it wasn't clear to me that we should have just ordered drinks and apps, so we ordered everything at once. This meant that all our food came out at the same time, and that we were waiting ~25 minutes for said food, which was a little long. We ordered the scotch egg, which was tasty, but only one egg and was $6; a tad pricey I felt. For main courses, my wife ordered the braised beef grilled cheese that she liked, it did not come with any sides/accouterments, though you could add a small fries for $2. I ordered the beef tenderloin with onion gravy, which came with a small order of fries (not listed). The beef was very tender, the gravy was closer to an au jos, the portion size was too small (4 small cuts of meat) for the $20 price; I felt the portion would have been better priced at $16. We ordered two sides, the bacon brussel sprouts, as well as the skillet corn bread with honey butter. Loved both of these sides and would get both again. Finished off with a caramel cup petite sweet treat, which was tasty. The ambiance was really cool, they had a roaring fire going, the bar had lots of character, the decor was reminiscent of the olden times, they really nailed the aesthetic. I didn't find the high-top chairs very comfortable (sitting for an hour), so I'd probably opt for a normal table. I would say this added to the experience quite nicely. I enjoyed the flavor of every dish. I do feel like the price is a little higher than I thought they were worth (most notably the beef tenderloin, but also the scotch egg). Service, broken down in a few different ways. I think they'd benefit by having a dedicated greeter/host(ess) going through the "what to expect" for new-to-this-place diners, since it's a different experience than most are likely used to. You can kind of pick it up by watching, listening in, what have you, but it'd be better to have it explained. As previously mentioned, we ordered everything at once, as that seemed like the appropriate thing to do, but that meant apps & entrees all came out at the same time. If we should only order drinks/apps to start, and order the meal from the waitress, that should be explained. Our server was very busy and fairly frazzled whenever she did stop by. We waited about 15 minutes and had to actively flag her down to place a dessert order and to get the check, and she looked really frustrated at us when we finally had gotten her attention. Something else to be aware of, and they mention it on the menu, they add a 5% service fee for the hourly workers (you can ask for that to be removed), which is separate from gratuity. I liked this place, I'll be going back, but will try during a less-busy time, and will be more selective with my ordering. If you're looking to try something new/different, I would recommend giving them a go. If you're not a fan of a bit of chaos in your dining, this may not be a fit for you. read more

You have to scan a QR code to get to their online menu and then you have to submit place your own order online at the table. The server only brings food after you have done the ordering. If you want a second beverage, you have to go online again. I know that this may be the "hip" new trend, but I'm of the mind, if I wanted to be a waiter, I would apply go the job. I also find it annoying that after you have eaten that they don't clear the table until after you have assumed the role of cashier and checked yourself out. Learned that everything was done through an app. Basically was told to order everything through here which is fine, but it allowed the waitress to become MIA. I ordered the Pot Roast and said to a back server, "We'll be sharing this" they basically were like "cool" and walked away. I ordered the berries and cream dessert. Picture on the app looked like it had a lot of berries and things on it. The dessert came out with 4 blueberries on it. The waitress didn't take the order for it, so she probably had no idea I had ordered it. I ate it because she was MIA again for around 15-20 minutes. Let her know as a precaution that it was a disappointment due to the fact it had 4 blueberries. We frequently go to Rising Eagle, because we love the atmosphere, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the food is always great. It's a great casual environment, where you catch up with friends, and move around to socialize. It's easy to just grab some appetizers, or have a full meal. Monday nights are always fun with live music! We like the self-ordering system, which makes it easy to start with appetizers, and add other items afterwards. I like this pub. The ambiance/decor reminds me of a pub in England. The food is decent; haven't had a bad meal. The shepherd's pie I had was really good. What I don't like is the ordering part. I know it's tough getting help now a days but having to order from the stupid code or going up to the hostess booth is very frustrating and annoying. I go to a restaurant to be waited on, not having to get up and down every time I need a drink or to order something or to get the bill. I've tried on three occasions now to order from the code, put in all my info including the credit card, only to get an error message. Very frustrating. They really need to do away with this process. Adding a star now that QR code ordering has solved all awkwardness of getting seated. You can take any clean table on entry, which is more convenient than traditional service, and start ordering immediately on the Toast app (or near immediately after connecting WiFi because cell service is poor). The food is still very tasty, and the atmosphere warm and tavernlike. Prices remain somewhat high against similar competition, especially considering sandwiches are side-free, but charges are closer to market post-pandemic than previously. Was excited to have a new place in town. Walked in with a friend and instead of being seated, we were approached by someone who had to explain the process of ordering and getting our drinks. Every person or group that walked in had to have an explanation given to them. It's kind of a cross between fast food restaurant and an actual sitdown restaurant. There's a service charge as you are not expected to tip because there are no actual servers, though people come around and check in. It's weird. If I'm going to pay restaurant prices to go out and have a meal, I will go to a place where I can sit down and relax and order my food from the table. The whole idea of going out and paying for service and someone else to make my food just to be able to relax and be taken care of for a little while. I am so disappointed in and upset with Turners for what they are doing with this space, and I miss Stearns & Hill more and more every day. S&H was a cozy casual place to grab a beer and a burger, ya know, like a publick house, without claiming to be one. Rising Eagle belabors the point to death about what a cozy casual place they are, but in reality it is confusing, stressful, and not relaxing at all. There's a lot to unpack, but I'll focus on my top three gripes. The first being, there is no true wait service. You need to wait in line to order your food and your drinks (like at Five Guys!), then find a table (if you can). A staff member will bring your food to the table. Once the food arrives, if you've finished your drink and would like another with your meal, you now have to leave your nice hot meal, get up, and go wait in line to get another beverage. Next up, if you like spending almost $20 on a burger, have I got the place for you! The burger starts at $14. Would you like fries with that? Too bad, it doesn't come with any, but they'll gladly add them for an additional $2. Oh wait, you wanted to do something crazy like add cheese on your burger. Another $1.50. To state the obvious, this burger is not wagyu beef and is not an $18 burger. The last thing I'll mention is that the restaurant automatically adds a 5% service charge to your bill for the staff. This is mentioned in fine print on the menu, but is easy to miss. Be sure to take this in to consideration when you're figuring out the tip. Turners runs a chain of successful restaurants, so unclear why they're trying to reinvent the wheel here. Just run the place like a restaurant. My wife and I live in downtown Melrose and dine out often. This is the only place we will not go back to. read more

We went on a rainy Tuesday night during school break. Surprisingly busy, but not crowded with a fair number of families with kids. Service was excellent and there was a host explaining the system when we walked in. No wait to order drinks and our app (fried green beans). Delightful atmosphere. Reminded me of pubs I frequented when I lived in London, just with much better food. Perfect for a cold mid winter rainy night. Our waitress was very attentive and other than the peculiar ordering system (which I am guessing also has to do with Melrose alcohol laws - it was a dry town not so long ago) it was close to a traditional sit down experience. What I really liked was the reasonable price point while keeping food quality high. The pork chop dinner special was delicious and for $16 was VERY reasonable. My son's panko topped fish in lemon sauce was excellent. My other son raved about the Washington tenderloin. 4 decent sized slices perfect medium rare with mashed potatoes and onion gravy for $20? The wife's burger was over seasoned. I'm guessing they shake on some seasoning and over did it. Was still good, but it's a smaller patty and she eats without the top bun which aggravated the situation. We had included sides of delightful roasted of brussel sprouts and what looked like a combination of butternut squash and caramelized onions and maybe sweet potatoes. My youngest son didn't like it, but let me assure you my other son and I picked it clean. No desert. 5 drinks. Just over $150 including 5% service charge and 15% tip. I've got NO gripe about the 5% service charge. It's clearly shown on the bill and explained in many places what it's for. People in food service work hard and I am happy to pay them for it. I would like to leave a lower review, but I don't want to nuke what I still think could otherwise be a gem. I'm involved in the restaurant industry myself in NYC so I know a thing or two about it. Firstly Turners is one of my favorites around Boston. Was excited to see them open a sister restaurant across the street. I've been now several times to Rising, and there are some things they've got it down, and others are just unbelievably baffling a professional service outfit would do. The ambiance is top tier. Cozy with fireplaces in winter, beautiful wood, old art on wall. They've nailed it. Menu is varied and reasonable given location. I don't find it overpriced. Great rotating tap list. Excellent spirit selection. I discovered they have Maine Dinner on draft now which is incredible. The quality of the food is also very good. Maybe not great, but very good for sure, beats most other competitors in the area handily. For its target audience, it's perfect. They have live music often which is just awesome, and something we need to continue to support as a local Melrosian. Now onto the bad. My biggest issue and I think most others would agree, is the ordering/paying system. They've been trying to force this system on unhappy patrons for over a year now and IT DOESN'T WORK. I understand the QR code menu. But for fuck sake give me the waitstaff to take my order and pay my bill. Or have us pay up front after. The idea of manually putting in my cc info to the website is beyond toxic. I want to sit for a meal and converse, not feel like I'm in the office. I'm not clear why they continue do persist with this insane ordering system when every other restaurant post COVID has actual wait staff to take orders and accept payment. How can I get waiters recommendations? Are they trying to save money with less staff? Trying a little too hard to be cool and trendy? On top of it the app has crashed several times when I try to place an order on a special. Give me a fucking break. It would be such a shame to see this place disappear on account of such an easy fix. I've no idea what the hell the owner is thinking. Obviously Turners is run quite well, it doesn't make sense. I've discussed this with several others and it's unanimous agreement that we generally really like Rising but avoid more than often as we don't feel like going through with the ordering system. It would seem that people who want to do the "decide what you want to eat before you even sit down and have a minute to relax, stand in line, get your spoon thing" should be able to enjoy all that fun. That right off the bat said something about their customer service. I then went and picked my food up and the young lady who helped me was amazing. We've had the pretzels, bang bang cauliflower (delish!), pulled pork sandwich, fries, wings, and turkey sandwich (this was soo tasty - like thanksgiving comfort food on a sandwich! And perfectly balanced flavors) Ordering is super simple - you can use your phone, order at the bar and/or order with a friendly staff member who frequently walks around to check and make sure everyone is doing well. Not sure why folks have found ordering difficult in the past - it's honestly very easy. Most of all, love the casual atmosphere - it's a great place to grab a small bite and drinks or larger meal, and in the winter relax by the fireplace. Had a very disappointing dinner experience here on 12/26. To start the night I ordered an espresso martini, when I got it I quickly realized it was a mix of an espresso and chocolate martini despite no mention of chocolate ingredients on the menu. I'm not sure if the female bartender made her own version or what, but it was not what was on the menu. Another person in my party attempted to order a cosmo with a citrus vodka but the bartender said they had no citrus vodka. Another person in my party ordered a Makers mark Manhattan but the bartender said they don't have makers mark, despite us seeing the bottle of it on the shelf at the bar. Once we told the bartender we could literally see the bottle she apologized and made the Manhattan. Moving on to appetizers, we wanted to order the crab dip but on the menu it came with salt and vinegar chips. We asked the bartender if they had non salt and vinegar chips and they said no. We ordered our dinners with a side of a basket of fries. The fries never came because the bartender never put them in and we eventually had to request the check because the fries still hasn't come out 15 minutes later. While we were eating dinner the male bartender who was working that night was speaking to the female bartender who was serving us and within earshot of customers he said he was going to cut up fresh limes because the limes they were currently using were slimy. Absolutely disgusting. When I originally ordered my espresso martini I noticed the female bartender made quite a bit extra. Then, while eating dinner me and another person in my party saw the bartender pour herself the leftover martini and drink it, in front of customers. That is unacceptable. Food was fine overall. My husband and I love the atmosphere, the food, and the wonderful staff. We have spent so many wonderful evenings here with family and friends. It is a true neighborhood pub. The ordering process is perfect and I would not change a thing about the method. It is perfect for groups, so much easier than splitting a check! My only ding is the music. I get the theme, I love the commitment to an identity but yoiks, it is a little off putting when trying to relax with friends and have a nice evening when BOOM! I've been to Rising Eagle a few times and always thought the food was decent. Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience there on our last visit. Their internet was down, which brought the entire restaurant to a screeching halt. I get it, things happen. We were told they expected to be back online in about 20 -25 minutes. We decided to wait as we were in no hurry, and no one in the family was starving. However, about 20 minutes later, a new customer walked in, and we overheard the hostess telling him that the kitchen was backed up because the internet had been down, and the wait time was at least another 45 minutes. Upon hearing this, we politely approached the hostess to ask if the 45 minutes were for anyone new coming in for dinner, or if it was an additional 45 minutes to begin seating anyone at all. At this point, the hostess became extremely defensive and asked us why we were angry with her. We responded that we were not angry but were simply seeking clarification so we could decide whether to stay or go elsewhere. She then, in an extremely rude tone, demanded that we explain what we thought she could do for us and insisted that the kitchen backup was "not her fault." As someone who also works in the service industry, her demeanor was shocking! We were in no way angry at her or thought she could somehow change the situation, but what she definitely could have done was keep her customers informed. A simple 'hey, we thought we'd be ready to seat people in 20 to 25 minutes, but it looks like the kitchen is backed up more than we realized. It is going to be an additional 45 minutes' - then we could decide to stay or leave. Basic communication really is part of the hostess job description; we weren't expecting anything above and beyond basic information. Needless to say, we will never be back. My beer was nice, ambiance was great - burger and fries were a bit bland and underwhelming. I'll be back to try other things on the menu soon.
