This concept is really bad. Stand in line and look at the menu. Order your food and drinks (before you are seated!). Ridiculous! Then carry your drinks to a table if one is available. If I wanted to go through this process I would go to fast food places, which I do not. We turned around and left immediately after seeing this foolish concept! Went there on Father's Day. Had no trouble getting a table. Now I know why. On the bright side, the food was delicious (even though I didn't get what I ordered). However, the ordering/service model at this restaurant is completely absurd. You really do have to experience it to believe it. I regularly use plenty of other restaurant and food delivery apps without any problems. The app at this restaurant is beyond frustrating and took forever to get the thing to somewhat work. If you have questions about how to order, the waitress can't help you. Apparently, dealing with the ordering of the food is not the server's job. Huh?! That is the hostess's job so you have to go up to the hostess stand and wait in line to ask the hostess to help with ordering. The hostess was super nice but seemed new and had absolutely no idea how to get the app to work. After about 15-20 minutes, we were finally able to order our food. It was obvious in speaking with the hostess that we were not the only people to complain about this ordering system. All of the food except my entree was then brought to the table. Then the waitress noticed that no one had ever brought the drinks. Eventually, the drinks came along with my entree. It wasn't actually what I ordered, but we all agreed that there was no way that it was going to be corrected at this point so I just ate what I got. The food was all really good. However, no food on the planet is worth dealing with the crazy ordering system and lack of service. I also can't figure out why customers are expected to tip for full sit-down service when the waitress is not at all involved in taking orders, taking payment, etc. It is sort of like the worst parts of self-service but with full sit-down prices and tipping. Definitely felt a bit ripped off, especially considering that food and drinks came out of order, didn't get what I ordered, etc. I agree with the poster who mentioned that the owners seem so be a bit out of touch with what people want, which is odd because Turner's (owned by same people I think) is well run. My wife and I are adamant supporters of local small business and frequent guests at Melrose restaurants We went to Rising Eagle on 12/5 to see the long awaited new Melrose Restaurant. While the décor and atmosphere was great, the processes were unbelievably terrible. To be greeted at the door by the Hostess and told to pick up our menus on the counter and proceed to the cashier at the end of the bar to order food and drink, then select a table or bar stool to sit at. We said we just wanted wine and a light meal at the bar, we were told (politely) that we needed to order from the cashier then select a seat. (what if there are no seats available after order???) While waiting in line to order we saw a sign that said "Guest pick up drinks here". When I asked the cashier (again politely said) the bartenders will serve drinks to guests at the bar only, all table seated guests must pick up their own drinks. We immediately left. It felt like standing in line to order was "Fast food atmosphere EXCEPT ITS A $14.00 hamburger". We shall not return Secondly we notice the bottom of the menu stated "To more equitable distribute your dining dollars and acknowledge to all team members, a 5% Publick House hospitality fee is automatically added to your check.* This fee is shared with front and back of house Rising Eagle staff. Feel free to adjust this however you deem appropriate. Any gratuity you choose to leave in addition is by law only distributed amongst wait staff/food runners, service employees and bartenders." " * the money does not represent a tip or service charge for wait staff employees, service employees or service bartenders. Any checks left open after you depart will automatically be charged to credit card given for that check and will have a 15% gratuity added on. Thank you very much for your support." While trend in restaurants has been to adjust menu items to true cost and pay living wagers to all staff, the above statement goes in the opposite direction, with hidden charges (and probably lower pay for staff) Secondly, I am not sure that the restaurant adding a 15% charge to any open tab is legal. To add to a credit card charge without the card owners knowledge may be illegal and is definitely unethical. What is to stop a staff member that receives a 10% or 12% tip due to poor service from tearing up the signed copy and then the Rising Eagle will charge the guest 15% !!! read more

I'm really rooting for this place but it needs a bit of work. The good - they did an amazing job renovating the space to be a publick house. The atmosphere is excellent. The bad - The food, prices and seating process are where everything falls apart. You have to order your food and get your drinks before you can sit. Not everybody followed this rule and with the restaurant pretty full, it was maddening seeing someone in line behind you scoop up a coveted table before you. We had a party of 8 people in front of us who didn't really know what they wanted. It took them about 10 minutes for them to order and pay for everything. In all, it took about 20+ minutes for us to get to our table. The beer selection was a little disappointing and pricey for a publick house. It was about $8-12 for run-of-the-mill beer ($8 for a Guinness!). We ordered the Charcuterie Board ($14) which was pretty good. My wife noticed that the fig they use is the same (or nearly the same) you can buy at Trader Joes. We also decided to split the BLAT sandwich ($12) which was a REALLY small sandwich. Luckily we ordered the fries which were not included and cost $2 extra. After our meal was over one of the managers asked us how we liked it. I didn't have heart to tell her that we were pretty disappointed in the whole experience. I know that they're trying hard. My advice for them is to visit two placed - the Three Broomsticks at Harry Potter World in Universal Orlando (high quality, affordable food) and the Publik House in Washington Square in Brookline (amazing beer selection). Take the best from both of those places and this restaurant will do great. read more

First I would like to note that my wife and I are avid restaurant goers, live in Melrose, and always support the local restaurants. We frequent the owners other restaurant across the street (Turners) on a regular basis even though that has gone downhill a bit. We have been waiting for more casual type place to dine in Melrose for a while now and was originally excited to hear out the opening of the Rising Eagle. On 11/29 I alone found a short amount of time to spare so I was able to stop in to have a quick drink to see what the new place was all about (even with hearing a lot of negativity about it via friends). They did a nice job renovating the space however the process was shockingly terrible. I walked in and noticed the roped off food/drink line however I was by myself and one of the 8 or so bar stools empty so I went over to sit down and grab a drink. The bar tenders were all very nice however they told me I had to get up, go to the hostess stand or cashier, request a drink, then I can come back and sit down. Hmmm I thought very odd but I did so as requested. I believe it was the owner that may have taken my order. As I was allowed to go sit again I watched the process from the stool. He went over to tell someone what I wanted to drink pointing me out, they went to someone to do the same, then they finally were able to get the order to the bartender. I'm pretty sure we could have skipped about 8min of time by just letting me order from the bartender and I'm sure the bartender would prefer this anyway. So as I casually sit sipping my drink I ask the bartender (again who were all great) if I wanted to order another drink and an app (food would be required per town ordinance after one drink) I can just order through the bar correct? safe to assume I thought but NO! I would have to get up stand in line again to order. To be fair I did not order food and cannot comment on that nor did I want to get up to wait in line to order anything else. I am unfortunately extremely disappointed in the process. Myself, wife, and friends who are all in the same age bracket 40-50 will not be back and/or try it out again unless a major change in the process happens. I can appreciate the effort for trying to make it and authentic type service of colonial times however this is 2019 and this will not work. read more

Upon arrival we were greeted by one of the owners. He went through the ordering concept before you pick your seat and we were excited to begin a different way of dining out. As we approached the registers we were able to read the menus on the wall or take one from a basket. It would be a nice touch to have the menus displayed in even larger print such as maybe having it displayed like beers on tap are written in a brewery. Something like chalk paint or a large board display rather than just taping up the paper menus. It was lovely to get a drink right away next to the registers and not have to wait for a waitress to take the order. We selected the wings appetizer and pretzel sticks. You take a wooden numbered spoon to the table you select and display it for food to be delivered. Both items were served quickly and hot ! I found it to be a nice personal touch that the waitress knew my name through the use of their technology to order and pay through. Both food items were delicious. Chicken seasoned well and even though I'm not a blue cheEse fan I enjoyed the wing sauce. The pretzel was buttered , served with two mustards and taste better eaten immediately! Friends joined us after and were able to add to our bill. The waitresses were attentive and even if ours was not readily available other wait staff was able to help. They ordered fries and chicken sandwiches which looked great and by the sounds of it tasted great. The other party members ordered local beer and I had a gin and tonic. For dinner I had the BLAT. It was outstanding. Simple. So tasty. I loved the Naan and huge chunks of avocado! I'll be back to try the French onion soup, fish of the day was salmon, salads and charcuterie! I enjoyed the warm lighting , soft music , fireplace and local feel. Decor was clean and I'm hoping they will consider inviting some live music ! read more

Beware of the 5% fee that they place on bill at end. Never told of this. Called a "Pubilick House Fee". If I had noticed when there would have complained. Raise prices if needed but don't add a fee at end that I will not see. Very deceptive. Also New way of ordering challenging. Had to have staff come over numerous times to fix. Wrong drink delivered and all parties at table ended up on single check even though both scanned and ordered food separately. read more

Most of town has been waiting for Rising Eagle to open for months, and they do not disappoint. Not the place if you're uptight and are looking for a quiet, fancy restaurant; they have a semi-casual ordering system and a very laid back feel. This is a public house in the truest sense of the word. The beer list is diverse and high quality, without overloading in any particular style. The cocktails weren't bad, although the glassware was definitely non-traditional. The staff was excellent; everyone we dealt with was friendly, enthusiastic, helpful, and encouraging. The food was outstanding. The ambiance is exactly what it should be. I only had a few notes, none of which were significant enough to prevent me from returning regularly. 1) the fries were perfectly cooked but slightly over salted. Salt is easy to add on something like that; maybe lay off it a smidge. 2) the wood burning fireplace smells great and gives it a great feel, but wasn't vented nearly well enough. The place got a legit campfire vibe to it (which I liked, but some might not) the night I was there. Maybe turn the vents up a bit when you're burning logs. 3) the explanation of the service fee appears to be well meaning but is VERY poorly worded. What does adjust up or down as you please mean? There's a caveat that tips added only go to front staff? Does that mean we can't adjust the gratuity to back of house staff? They did a great job (my meal really was stellar and the turn around time was great) and don't deserve to be saddled with this poorly worded complexity. Overall though, these are clearly details a brand new place can work out. They hit the nail on the head for the things that matter: the food was great, the drinks were very good, the staff was excellent. read more

I had the pot roast - it was delicious and the portions were generous. I enjoyed the craft beer. The atmosphere was great, too. The pot roast was $20. I would have gladly paid $25 to be able to come in, be seated, get comfortable, browse the menu, and have someone take my order. We have been waiting a long time for this place to open, and I really wanted to like it. Unfortunately with the terrible experience and just aevrage food we had, we will not be returning any time soon. Service: You order up front while they coordinate a table for you. It was confusing but we were seated relatively quickly. It was all downhill from there. While servers were engaging other tables we didn't have a server come to us proactively at all throughout the entire meal. I had to flag down someone for my kids milks, to inquire about why our food was taking so long, and to get our check. Literally nobody approached us to ask about drinks, ask how the meal was, or anything. Even when I asked the hostess to check on our food she didn't report back. This is the worst service experience I've had in a restaurant in at least 5 years. Food: Average at best, apart from the kids menu. The kids meals were good quality and a decent value at $8 which included sides, drink, and CrackerJack dessert. For adult entrees the chicken pot pie was bland, and the steak with onion gravy was just ok and not cooked as we had ordered it (overdone and didn't have the right side dish). Overall the food we got was maybe 2.5 stars, but service gets 0 stars because we basically didn't get any. I get the sense they are still changing the service model based on what I've read in other reviews. Needless to say they don't have it down yet, and I for one won't be risking such a bad time for average food until I hear it's better. read more

We went there early in evening because we thought it would be crowded but there was plenty of seating. The ordering process is like any fast food place. Place your order with the guy at the register and you get a spoon with a number on it. You get to sit anywhere you want. Then you have to pick up your drinks at the bar. McDonald's already has this process. The burger was smaller than most restaurant burgers and the side of fries were $3.00. Burger, fries, A bowl of chowder, tempura string beans 2 wines and 2 beers (only local "craft beers" sold here). The total cost was $68.00. The wine was $9.00 and the beer $7.00. We didn't know who to tip as no one person actually waited on us. We found a tip was added for the kitchen help automatically but confused about what additional tip to add. The atmosphere is great and I supposing a lot of money was spent refurbishing. Needless to say, we will not be going back. We will patronize other local establishments with better burgers, less costly drinks and are able to sit down, order and relax and not watch kitchen help searching for your number to serve you your food. read more

Beautiful restaurant. Not thrilled with the concept though. You enter the restaurant and are greeted by a host that explains the dinning process. You head to bar and place your drink a good order. Then you bring your own drinks and fun yourself a table. Shortly after waitstaff check in and verify your order then delivery it when it's ready. The food was good, I had the cheese burger. Another person in my party had the haddock and ate every bite. I know the owners are trying to recreate pub eating in the UK. We have been to Rising Eagle Publick House 4 times in a month - so I guess you could say we are fans. LOVE the comfortable feeling you get as you walk in. Every server/bartender we have encountered has been so great to interact with. Service is exceptional each time. Some yummy suggestions: brussels sprouts, the grilled cheese with the tender beef in the middle, the BLAT, their french onion soup is AMAZING, our son loved the hot pretzel and his grilled cheese came with some of their delicious fries, fresh apple slices and carrot sticks. Approximately 6:15 pm my friend and I arrived and were Greeted by Mr. Turner explaining to us how the process worked at the Rising Eagle - First you order a drink and food if you like then you will be given a spoon and go pick a table per your party size. Step aside and pick up your drink. There is even a self-serve place to get water (I called it the Watering Can). Someone will bring over your appetizer based on your spoon number! Simple enough!?! We choose a seat Close to the back of the house where you can get your own water, I could watch just about everything going on in the restaurant as from where I sat I could see the back of the house, the front of the house, the watering can, the bar, everything! I could also see the line of people coming in learning what the process was and before you knew it the restaurant was filling up! A couple of bites into our first appetizer the Crab Dip with the Pretzels, my friend got up and got us some water from the watering can. She poured my glass then when she went to pour hers the watering can basically went dry. Minutes later Mr. Turner started to fill up said water can with something no bigger than a pitcher. Of course, in between him filling it, people were coming up to get water! That wasn't going to last long, we thought, but he continued to do that a few times! He should have someone else doing that, we thought! There's got to be a better way we thought, maybe have it piped in? Cool thought though, the watering can! Sorry the back to the food - The Crab Dip was good, warmed up with an even amount of cream cheese and crabmeat, the portion could have been a bit bigger with three deliciously baked, buttered and salted Pretzels! The Pretzels were actually the STAR of the day!!! We then ordered another glass of wine each (we had to flag someone down and ask as no one is assigned to any table and no one really checks on the customer to see if you want anything else) and decided we wanted to try the Charcuterie Board, which by the way is listed as Gluten Free, not that either of us have a problem with Gluten but I believe the reason why is because we were given one piece of bread to go the delicious assortment of Sopressata, Salami, Prosciutto, Fig, Nuts, Goat and Parmigiana Cheeses, enough for two, but no bread? I asked a young man I saw around the back of the house if we could have some bread to which he replied, I am not sure, we do not have any for free. I told him I would pay for the bread. This caused a bit of a fiasco for the back of the house! Do we have a bread option? Do we have anything to offer? Minutes later a woman came over and gave us three what looked like crackers or stale square of bread with something that looked like cheddar cheese on top! We both tried one and decided to get another order of the delicious pretzels to finish our Charcuterie Board. At one point, we heard one of the staff, complaining about how busy it was and that it was confusing knowing who is waiting on who! They definitely have some kinks to work out and serve some bread with the Charcuterie Board, please!!! read more

Definitely worth waiting in the line!!! The food and service were truly amazing. I honestly went because of the "HILLTOPPER" salad. I grew up going to the Hilltop Steakhouse and was a fan of the "house" dressing on their signature house salad .... well Rising Eagle has brought that dressing and salad back to life. I know just a salad but I really did miss it ... now only if they could get some of "Toodys" meatballs haha .. I had the GENERAL WASHINGTON'S SLICED BEEF TENDERLOIN AND ONION GRAVY and my husband had OVEN ROASTED LOCAL HADDOCK both were cooked perfect and tasted amazing. When I first went there I didn't understand how it worked but I loved the idea of the inclusion of a "tip" for the kitchen help. Ordered a BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato) on Naan bread. Deeeeeelishcious! We were greeted at the door with an explanation of how things work, ordered our food and drinks, given a numbered spoon, sat down and our very pleasant waitress came over to help us out. Very very efficient. Can't wait to go back to try their other dishes. Would pick it over Turner's, as good as that place is. This seems to be a very different concept in dining. I liked the atmosphere and the concept was fun. Had the chicken pot pie which was ok but could have used more seasoning and thicker gravy. At the end we shared a creme brulee which came in a little tinfoil cup which I thought could have been presented better (like an actual ramekin) it was fine but doubtful it was made in house. At the end my dad and I walked up the stairs just to take a peak at the space for future events and were met with what I assume was a manager telling us we couldn't because there was a private event on one side of the room. Totally get that there was an event but we literally just wanted to stand at the top of the stairs and take a look and go, she definitely put me off with the way she spoke. Could have just said "sorry we have an event right now but if you'd like to come back..." It's not as if we wanted to join the group for cocktails! All in all I'd give it another chance. read more

We had a lovely dinner at the Rising Eagle last night. Ordering at the bar seemed to streamline the process, but we'd like to have seen the specials posted before placing the order (maybe have the specials posted on a board at the door; or as an addition to the menus available by the front of the restaurant). I was happy to see a few healthy options (salads and veggie sides), but hope to see more as the place evolves. Our meals were delicious (chicken Milanese - crispy and juicy, with a generous side of arugula salad; steaming hot chicken pot pie). Eventually it would also be nice to see some fun non-alcoholic drinks (non-alcoholic beer; mocktails; kombucha). The interior is cozy, the fire is lovely, and the service was great. I'm happy to see the 5% add-on for an equitable distribution of a gratuity, and this did not offset our tip to our server - if I'm not mistaken, servers generally are not paid as well as other restaurant employees (maybe this isn't the case at Turners, but I believe it is in MA) based on the assumption that they will make up the wages through tips. It's really not a high price to pay to ensure that the servers and the entire staff are happy and not tempted to jump at the next opportunity. read more

As someone who lives in the neighborhood and LOVES Turners seafood (their sister restaurant across the street), my husband and I were so excited to try this place. Well... we were quite disappointed. This place has an identity crisis. They try to meld a fast food system with a high class dining ambiance. You are corralled into the restaurant toward a register at which you order your food first thing. You then pick up your drink at the bar and find your own table. Then, an impersonal server delivers your food (all at once- no spacing of the appetizers) and forgets to check on you. You are charged a 5% gratuity fee on the bill, leaving you to wonder if that's all you leave for such a poor experience, but then feeling bad for whoever signed up to work in such a restaurant... Maybe he or she had no idea. Anyway, the food was okay. Won't go back. Will stick to Turner's Seafood unless they change the concept. It just doesn't fit in our small town. read more

let me start by saying the food was good. Its basically pub food but they try and make it extra fancy, like shredded beef on the grilled cheese, and simple comfort foods like pot roast and meatloaf. But the ordering is really really messed up. Its not like they don't have plenty of staff around to take your order, but the staff doesn't take your order. you have to register your phone, and place the order yourself, so if you have a group, everyone gets their own bill or you designate someone. Its really dark so hard to read the paper menu without a flashlight, and I'd rather not be staring at my phone when im out with friends for a bite. No one will come by to ask if you need another drink, you have to order your own. Then when the bill comes, they add a 5% service fee, but they tell you its not a tip, its a service fee, you're supposed to tip on top of placing all your own food and drink orders. Its also hard to ask questions about the food when no one comes to place an order. so food, decent, but service?.. its not restaurant style service. read more

This is the type of restaurant Main Street in Melrose has been missing. The ambience is great. It's cozy and has a sense of community you don't typically get. We got wings, braised beef grilled cheese, and a burger. All were very good. The only complaint we have would be the prices are a little high for sandwiches since they don't include a side. We had to pay extra for fries. Also, the ordering system is a little different at first but once you order a drink or some food from the front, you can order the rest of your food or drinks from your table. read more

I honestly love how they queue, seat, and serve at Rising Eagle. I think the lines move quickly and I have never been unable to find a seat (I have been 4-5 times now). I love the rotating list of specialty cocktails. Every one I have tried has been tasty. Classics like old fashioneds are also good. I've tried a variety of small plates now, with my favorite being the brussel sprouts and the wings. Is the food as good as Turner's? No, but that's in a different category altogether. This is fantastic gastropub food. The first time I visited the food quality wasn't quite up-to-snuff, but they just opened that week. Now, a few months in, they nail it every single time. The ambiance is awesome and the wait staff (especially the bartenders) are all super nice. I am so happy this has opened, and I plan on going back often. read more

The food is good, but the customer model is terrible. You have to wait on line to get to the bar to order a drink and an appetizer. The menu for drinks and appetizers are posted on a wall that is not easily accessible in a crowd. Melrose has an archaic law that requires patrons to order food along with any alcoholic beverages. That is a boon to bars and restaurants but a total pain to customers, especially with this set-up. Once you have placed that initial order you have to find an open table. Then your drinks and appetizer(s) are delivered and you get to order your entree. Absurd! Just seat us and take our order, for goodness sake! read more

So disappointed in the concept. Was so excited to have a pub in downtown MELROSE only to find out It is no better than a cafeteria. When I go out I want to be seated and waited on. I don't want to work for my meal and then have a mandatory tip added to my bill. Don't want to stand in line while reading the menu and be herded up to the cash register to place my order. Get rid of the tacky Order Here sign too! The good news here is the food is very good and delivered in a timely manner. The bad news is, it is too stressful to order it. Go to the bar and stand around picking appetizers and rushed doing so because of the line behind you? This exercise has got to go if this place is going to be successful. Once you get your food, it was impossible to flag down our waitress to get something. Note to owner..charge more for your burger if you think $14 is not enough, but don't charge me for a few thin slices of pickle. All those extras seem like a money grab...maybe charge a buck more for the beer. And 5% added to the bill to help pay your kitchen staff? This is not my responsibility! would give a 3.5 if that was an option. It's a good place and it's nice to have it back, I would almost guarantee a 5 for this place if it was just me and my wife or me and a friend on a cool/cold afternoon if you could get that key table right in front of the fireplace after a couple at the bar, in other words the potential if everything falls in place is great. Some of that is beyond the joint's control, like why do my kids always want to be around and have to eat. So anyway, the ordering takes a bit to get used to, you either order at the bar or you can order from your phone from the table. I really wanted a beer so I ran up to the bar and it seemed really confusing to them for me to have cash out, after 30 years plus of paying for beer at bars I can say I have a certain level of expertise around this. There is something to be said about the phone ordering, you can put all your special stuff in there and you definitely over order (brilliant marketing) but I"m old and just used to a traditional server milieu. Food and drink come fast and are pretty good, like it older, saltier sister Turners, it's not exactly cheap but the quality is good, the service being what it is, is friendly and they are definitely up to that Turners standard. The pastrami had a good smoke to it, my wifes fish was again Turners quality and the overpriced stuffed clams and pretzel were pretty good. I do feel if you order an expensive sandwich/burger it should not come a la carte, fries are extra, for a 15 dollar burger I think you should expect a handful of fries. So A plus for ambience, food quality, beer selection and cocktail, a high C for price and the somewhat new fangled ordering system and 5 pct "service fee".
