Service was pretty quick and friendly when we visited on Monday evening. We started the meal with queso (they offer yellow and white, we chose white), it was no-frills and tasted okay but it looks very similar to the "plastic cheese" you can get on nachos at baseball games. Not worth $6 for a small size. For dinner I got tacos al carbon from the menu. The waitress suggested beef which was fantastic. It was essentially beef fajita meat and had great flavor. I also tried the pork in my second taco and it wasn't very good, it lacked much flavor and was overcooked to the point of being tough and dry. The rice, beans, and topping (guacamole, onions, and pico de gallo) was a nice touch and were delicious. My fiancé got chicken quesadillas which were perfectly made (their flour tortillas are amazing), and also a chicken taco; he said the chicken taco was a little tough, lacked flavor, and the meat was very dry. It you're getting tacos here then stick with the beef. We planned to finish dinner with a free dessert, which is advertised on the outside of their building (picture attached). The poster said that dessert was free Monday-Friday with purchase of an entree. When we finished our meal and asked the waitress she said this is only with a coupon, and made a comment about how this is noted on the sign. About 15 minutes later the table next to us also asked about this deal and were told the same. I had a second look at the poster outside when we left, it does say "*with coupon" next to the offer for free coffee, but it doesn't say the same about the free appetizer, free dessert, or happy hour offers on the same poster. If I were to assume that this asterisk applies to everything on the board then that would include happy hour too, but I doubt that's the case. I think the restaurant was losing money on these deals, so they added a small asterisk about needing a coupon to a deceiving part of this poster. This is false advertising, and they should properly update the poster. It's clear that this "updated" message isn't understood since we and the table next to us asked both about the dessert offer. I'm sure this deal is questioned often. They also had a few things scratched off or corrected with tape and paper on their menus. I think they would be better off having everything reprinted. read more

Authentic Mexican food, not just a typical Tex-Mex place. Fresh and delicious. Chips and salsa were great too. Carnitas we're just like back home in Jalisco. My daughter had a chile relleno with queso and she said it tasted just like the ones my grandmother would make. The chile was topped with a red sauce and cheese. I tried it too and loved it. My 6 yr old loved the Al Pastor taco and ate all her beans and mine too haha. Rice was tender but not soggy. I don't love crunchy rice so this was perfect for my taste. My husband had enchiladas and he loved those as well. Son had a kids cheeseburger and I took a bite of his leftovers at home when reheating them for him and I can tell their burgers are something I'll order there too just from the flavor of his, even reheated the next day. Bloody Mary was spicy and great on a Sunday afternoon. Price point was such a win too with us being a big family. You can tell how much care went into creating each recipe and cooking it too. I read about this restaurant very recently in the Houston Chronicle. The review was written by food critic Alison Cook and she gave it a very good review. Since it is located about 1.5 miles from Tomball, I bookmarked it for a future visit since I am in that area from time to time. Last Sunday, I went for lunch. The restaurant is located in a strip center on the west side of Hwy 249 and has ample parking. Walking in to the hostess stand I noticed a small bar area with about 4 stools and two dining rooms connected. After looking at the menu, I went with my usual chicken fajitas and asked for a mix of both corn and flour tortillas since both are homemade here. The chips and salsas arrived. I really liked both with a slight preference for the red which was served in a styrofoam coffee cup while the green was in a small ceramic bowl. The red was a little difficult to dip into and I wonder why they would use that type of container other than maybe they were out of the traditional ceramic bowls like the green was in. The restaurant was busy during my visit and my table service suffered greatly. Very slow on ordering, drink and salsa refills. Eventually the female manager came by the table for a check in and after my notification, the service improved dramatically! After at least 15 minutes my entree arrived (see pic). The chicken strips were displayed in a wagon wheel spoke configuration on the platter. Despite the poor table service, I must say the fajitas were some of the best that I have had in a while. The chicken was juicy and flavorful with plenty of onions and bell peppers properly grilled on the sizzling platter. The tortillas also were very good as I liked both kinds. The charro beans also were very good. This was a meal that satisfied me with everything I ate and would be happy to order it again. Had the service been better, I could almost give a 5. If you are in the general area, it's worth the drive. Perhaps next time I will try their beef fajitas or something else as I would like to return. I am Mexican. Actually, I am half Mexican. You could never tell by looking at me, and I'd tell you my mother's maiden name to prove it, but then my amazon account would get hacked and I'd end up watching a bunch of cool stuff I never ordered get sent to other people. Let's just say it has a "ñ" in it and ends in "os". I also grew up in Houston and was raised on Tex Mex - both at home, on holidays with la familia and other than Sunday's when we ended up at Luby's we pretty much lived at Tex Mex restaurants. I'm also old enough to remember late 70s early 80s trips to that old Houston institution of Los Tios and the still operating Lopez Mexican Restaurant on the SW side. I remember when there was one Ninfas. I remember when fajitas didn't cost an arm and a leg and weren't made from filet mignon. I say all this to increase my Tex Mex street cred. Yesterday, following the repeated advice of several foodies, we finally made the trek over to Rita's Cantina Mexican Kitchen on 249. I have to tell you, this place was very highly hyped and to be honest, I was a little doubtful that it could live up to it. I am so glad I was wrong. We walked in around 4:00 and had the joint to ourselves. It's a small space, in a strip center and is run by a husband and wife team. The decor is old school Tex Mex with clear plastic covering the white table cloths on the tables. There is a small bar in the back stocked with a frozen margarita machine, tons of tequila and the other standard bar essentials. We ordered up a few Modelo michaladas and this is where it got interesting. They arrived in frozen terra cotta glasses with the michalada mix in the bottom and the beer on the side. These glasses were cold and remained cold. I like this serving method so much better than a frozen glass. It really kept the drink cold for the duration of the drink. I like it so much I talked the owner into ordering me a dozen of them. Oh yeah, the michalada is good. It's not the best I've ever had but it is certainly well above average. I know my salsa. The salsas at this restaurant are very good. They have a roasted component which I love and adds the depth of flavor that most great salsas have. It's hot but not overpoweringly so. The chips were fresh and hot to the touch and perfectly salted. I ordered the white queso and a bowl of guacamole for Ashley. I don't have a picture of the queso because the kid mauled it while we were taking the guacamole pic. Ashley said the Guacamole was outstanding and fresh. I don't do guacamole so I can't really comment on this one. (That I don't do guacamole doesn't mean I have to give up my Mexican card). The queso was delicious with tomatoes and pickled jalapeños on the side allowing you to mix your own consistency. Next up were the fajitas. They arrived on a sizzling platter and are beautifully thick slices of meat perfectly seasoned sitting atop a mountain of onions and peppers. When I say sizzling - I mean it. This has to be the first time I ever took a slo-mo video of food, but this dish justified it. These are old school fajitas, no foamed butter necessary - the tender meat shines through and is perfection on a tortilla. Those tortillas though ... This is where the restaurant really shines. Despite my heritage, I'm a "dyed in the wool fajitas require flour tortillas" guy. Well, I was. THE CORN TORTILLAS AT THIS JOINT ARE THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. Seriously folks - do not miss these homemade corn tortillas. The are supple and thick and soft, everything a flour tortilla is but in corn form. They are phenomenal and for the first time I can remember, I left the flour tortillas on the table when I left. Last up was the quad leches cake - yep that's right quad leches. It's like tres leches but more. That extra leches is killer. This dessert follows in that long line of cakes made by Mexican grandmothers everywhere. You can taste the homemade in it. It's creamy and soft and sweet. Yeah it's good. I don't normally order dessert at Mexican restaurants - with the baskets of pregame chips we devour - but this I would order again. Bottom line - this place takes old school Tex mex to it's pinnacle point. It doesn't have a 10 page menu filled with pictures and fried avocados stuffed with sous vide quail eggs and chroizo hand made by Mayan virgins. They have fajitas, the standards, and a crapload of combo plates. They take those Tex mex traditions, our food traditions, and elevate them to new heights. The best thing I can say about this is that the kid mid way through the meal (he's 7) says this. "We need to come here 2000 times and give them all the money." From the mouth of babes. read more

Today was not our first time at Rita's. My husband and I eat out regularly and really enjoy a delicious meal accompanied by great service. Tonight, as before, we were delighted by both. Food is definitely above average(looks and taste delicious), drinks were spot on(they use house sangria in their flavor sangria swirl margarita), and my husband's beer stayed cold(in the clay jarrito provided). Cuatro leches cake was extremely moist and flavorful, and bailey's coffee was very nicely presented. Alexis, our server was very polite and accommodating. Judy and Xavier are an amazing duo and the supreme owners of this quant establishment. They run this family owned business wonderfully. The food is always hot and fresh! The drinks are always worth it and they are always great hosts. We had the camarones de agua chile to start and it was delectable. I had the spinach enchiladas and he had the salmon relleno. Found this gem on yelp while in the area for my son's basketball tournament. The 4.5 stars are well deserved for this small restaurant but I'm giving it 5 stars because my usually hard to please youngest son said it deserved 5 stars and I agree with him 100%. It was a great start with chips, salsa and salsa verde which were provided as soon as we sat down. The sizzling chicken fajitas, rice and charro beans were all very good and the flour and corn tortillas handmade... not that factory made stuff. I come here alone a lot and as soon as I sit down they bring me the salsas I always order I normally order the Chilaquiles since this is the only Mexican place in Pinehurst that serves Mexican breakfast. They also have $3 mimosas on Sunday all day. Also only Mexican restaurant in Pinehurst that has champagne!! The owner always walks around and asks how you're doing. The Birria Tacos are AMAZING and they also have a cuatro leches cake not tres leches... CUATRO. Definitely a place for great quality and service.
