This taco shop is kind hard to notice with its isolated location in a little strip mall out in El Cajon. Rita's Mexican Food is a small taco shop that serves SD style Mexican food along with a entire separate menu dedicated to lighter cooking that has a more healthy approach. They also have plenty of vegetarian options, low carb options, and smaller portions. They have a small dining area if you wish to eat your food there along with a big screen TV to watch some local sports. One downside to Rita's is there is no salsa bar that I could see here, all the hot sauce is kept behind the counter in the fridge. However they are willing to supply you extra if you ask. Prices are pretty reasonable even though I found most of their portion sizes to be quite small compared to other places. They have a red and green sauce here, both are pretty decent in my opinion and they come in the tiny containers.
The California burrito (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/ritas-mexican-food-el-cajon-5?select=wkHwBczsbX6g6ZODIMubFA&userid=H1x-M7zrDWbtnSAW6ZZznQ) will cost you about six bucks with tax and really isn't much bigger than a stuffed burrito you'd find at a fast food place, small compared to other taco places. Their CA burrito (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/ritas-mexican-food-el-cajon-5?select=5P5-GKXpaOOsRkpgIfYCKw&userid=H1x-M7zrDWbtnSAW6ZZznQ) comes with meat, cheese, salsa, sour cream and fries. The tortillas they use here definitely aren't made lard, although they do taste really good. Even though the burrito wasn't stuffed too much, they did add a good ratio of ingredients with plenty of meat and cheese. Their carne asada is quite tender, flavorful and is on the leaner side with less fat. The fries weren't really too crispy at all, but I did wait a bit before eating my burrito, sour cream tends to sog them down. They also have a special here for "big" rolled tacos with your choice of beef or chicken. The 3 tacos (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/ritas-mexican-food-el-cajon-5?select=nDz5ovSdaf2LQXsTFySWUA&userid=H1x-M7zrDWbtnSAW6ZZznQ) came topped with guacamole, lettuce, tomato, cheese for $4.75 plus tax. I don't really quite see how they thought they were big, they seemed like regular sized tacos to me. They didn't seem to add much chicken to the inside of the tacos, but they added plenty of toppings. All their toppings here tasted really fresh along with great tasting guac.
This place seems like it has a great idea of offering healthier items at a taco shop, none of the food here seemed greasy at all. The ingredients here were all really good stuff, I just think the portion sizes could be a bit bigger to be comparable to other places. The guy taking my order at the front was really friendly, I didn't think he understood me too well but he got the order perfect. I'd put Rita's in as just okay, nothing too bad but there's definitely some better places out there. Although if you're looking for a vegetarian friendly place or healthier taco shop food, this would be the place to visit. read more
