On the contrary--I feel stores like this represent the best of the old America I grew up in. Bridgeport is in the middle of nowhere, and Gross Drug is the last old business in a town whose demographic has changed dramatically in the last forty years. During all that time Dale and Sheryl Gross have maintained an old fashioned feel to their full-service pharmacy and drug store. You can find obscure products from your childhood and the latest cancer medications. There's an excellent magazine section (the nearest one that's better is fifty miles away). Gifts, children's toys, cards and beauty products, stationery and office supplies, even a few vet supplies. Everybody there is friendly, cheerful, and will literally move the world to get you what you need--just ask. The old Five-And-Dime--my home town of Menlo Park, California had one. It's now replaced by a snarky boutique in a high street utterly unrecognisable from the gentle backwater it once was. So dreadfully sad. But Gross Drug in Bridgeport, Washington is INSTANTLY recognisable from the days when America was intimate and friendly. Long may it live!

When he pumped the gas he noticed that it stopped on $10, not $5. Not knowing what he was going to do, he went back inside to figure it out. When he told Kylie what happened, she said, "well, you weren't going to get anywhere on five bucks." This girl that doesn't even know us put $5 of her own money in our gas tank to help us out. That's customer service! That's the small town friendly that you just don't see anymore! Thank you Kylie! You helped us make it home and you helped to restore a little faith in humanity. We appreciate it and will definitely pay it forward!

It's sort of like if Lowe's, Home Depot, Bass Pro, Tractor Supply, your favorite fly fishing shop we're all rolled into one store, with only the best parts manifested in the aisles. And that's to say nothing of the saddlery, garden center, farm supply, and livestock sections, to name a few. The service here from every member of the staff borders on annoying, but in the most positive way... Everyone on the floor, asks you if you need assistance, but they don't pester you. One of them I've ever connected with is knowledgeable, and willing to go the extra mile to not only make the sale, but make you happy about it. On a recent trip, my son popped a hole in his waders-- not a great thing when you're standing waste deep in 30° alkaline water. The gentleman and the fly shop went out of his way to help us find a pair that fit him, and honored the clearance sale price to get him a $400 pair of waiters for under 70 bucks. More recently, the same kid a year older needed a pair of gloves to endure an unseasonable cold spell that had hit the area. One of the nice gals on the floor, explained that they were switching over to spring, but went out of her way to help him find an inexpensive pair of gloves to keep on fishing. Incredible selection, nothing locked up behind security glass like we have in Los Angeles County, and did I mention the cute little baby chicks of every variety? They don't travel on the airplane very well, but if I had a piece of land up there, I'd have chickens all over it because of this place. Hands-down, this is the best outfitter store I've ever visited, and that's saying something. We visit Mac once a year for Fishing, and no trip is complete without at least a few stops at North 40. We may not be frequent visitors, but we're customers for life.
