This place should be avoided at all costs, mainly because of the worst service I've ever had at a restaurant in my life. I don't even have high expectations for a place that is really only supposed to serve as a local neighborhood restaurant, but this place fell so far below the low bar that I even felt the need to leave a review if only to warn others to save their time and money and pick a different place. Also, FYI, they stop serving food and drink prior to 930, even on a Saturday night, despite their posted hours. TLDR: worst service ever, save your time and money and go someplace else read more

Finally, a fabulous place in restaurant wasteland! Love the atmosphere, sophisticated without being stuffy. Very reasonable prices, particularly given how inventive and varied the menu is. We had the spinach salad and Crab Flan for starters. The salad was outstanding. Normally, I wouldn't spend much time reviewing a spinach salad, but this begs attention. The Crab Flan - I actually embarrassed my friend by wiping the plate clean with my fingers. We also had the rock fish - a good slab prepared perfectly - and the Sweetbreads. Yes Alexandria, I said Sweetbreads! On a menu in this locale? Amazing. And delicious. The pine nut tart could use a little tweaking, maybe a more generous dusting of sugar, but warm and yummy. Definitely a place to linger over another glass of wine. BTW, the wine list reflects the Chef/owner's time managing a wine store. None of your grocery store brands here, just interesting and tasty choices. I just went again, had the Duck and the Rockfish (again). Since Bistro Francais in Georgetown service and food went down hill, I haven't found a decent French style bistro...until now. As they just opened the last few days, I have to say their staff and of course the food are exceptional. I had the ribeye sandwich w/shoestring fries. Portion, ratio of sauce, meat and bread was perfect. My personal opinion, bread can make or brake a sandwich. The French bread was as I remember my Asian/French mother who is a renowned chef baking when I was younger. Warm, perfectly crunchy outside with soft fluffy innards. Ribeye was smoked to perfection, tender and just enough bite and pull to make it worth every chew. The shoestring fries were a model of exactly what shoestring fries should be. A quintessential gathering of both soft and chewy fries and snappy crispy fries blended and salted. Since it's a working day, I stuck with an ice tea for my beverage. Refreshing. Glass was a bit small for my large thirst, but the bartender never allowed me to have to look around for a refill. On point at every turn. The entire staff was welcoming, smiling and attentive. I look forward to what the future holds for them, an excellent start. Maybe a daily or weekly specials with more French (authentic and influenced) dishes (i.e. need a good escargot in the area again!). Would've been a 5 star if we had a different server (James). The food was delicious. My order was not correct. I ordered the Duck and was brought Chicken. The waiter was pleasant and very apologetic, however nonchalant about his mistake. Disappointed that he made it seem like it was my mistake for the mishap... Bizarre! Didn't want to reorder while other my table guests had their meals ready (and correct) to eat. Otherwise, good atmosphere and nice local restaurant. I like this place. I agree with those who say that the neighborhood was in need of a restaurant of this calibre. I have been here several times since it opened including recently. I love that they have a "tasting" size for wines. That has been popular with my dinner companions and I anytime that we have gone. I had a Viognier that I enjoyed yesterday. I notice that it is not listed on the online menu - that tells me that the actual menu in the store features more options than on the website. I've also noticed by visiting several times that they change the menu up and they have lots of varied specials. The bottom line is that you should go there in person and decide what to order, which is kind of a fun way to do it. It's a place that encourages you to explore new and inventive tastes. I know from experience that the specials are very good and also that they keep a limited supply of ingredients on hand, so yes, this is a place where it's a good idea to be flexible when ordering. I think that they apply a certain amount of seasonality to the menu as well as matching the menu to the wines. It's kind of a wine bar with good food. I like the ambiance of this place for a quiet and intimate setting to catch up with dining companions while relaxing. It isn't a place where you want to rush out. It also features a bar and an upscale social "hang out" atmosphere. It is kind of playing into Virginia's rising trendiness as a gentrified wine and food destination. I've liked most of the dishes that I've had here, including the ever changing risottos, the flat breads, the steak tartare and the spinach and ricotta agnolotti. I actually really love the spinach and ricotta agnolotti. I remember the portion size seeming a little small but that was probably because, as someone else mentioned, I wanted to inappropriately lick my plate when eating it. I've heard rave reviews about the oysters and the pan roasted chicken breast. I've actually heard multiple great reviews of the chicken breast from different people. The food can produce some very memorable and surprising flavors. The desserts are enjoyably shared. One thing I will note is that I recently tried the Cotswald macaroni and cheese. I've been to the Cotswalds and I love a good mac 'n cheese so I had high hopes. The ingredients were good especially the crispy onions, but I do think that this dish needed a little more flavor. In particular, it needed a cheesier taste. I think that would be easy to tweak, it's currently a little bland. If you're ordering one of the vegetarian dishes then I'd go with the spinach and ricotta agnolotti. There are a lot of good options on this menu. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but I think this is generally a very nice addition to the local food scene. I want to see it do well. It is true that it's a little on the pricey side, but you can really control how much you order and the quality and service is good. It makes for a nice experience. I'd say go with an open mind and be game to try different things. There are a lot of hits on this menu and its an interesting concept. I grew up on ft. Hunt road and like many of the residents I long for a good restaurant closer than old town. As much as I want the River Bend Bistro the be that place it is not. I think if you are really being objective this doesn't compare and is disappointing. I had the pate to start and the poached salmon for an entree. The pate was great! Sad to see it not on the online menu anymore. The salmon, which is still on the menu, should be the item removed. The portion size was off, the salmon was season-less and the beans dominated the plate and were also season-less. Good thought though, the combo is nice but the execution was unsuccessful. Lastly, the waiter was guilty of a minor pet peeve of mine. When customers order different courses, timing when to fire the next course is something that understandably comes with practice. Our waiter needs more practice. I was on my 2nd piece of bread with the pate and out comes the entree. Crowding my place with barely touched pate and salmon that was getting cold fast is certainly not ideal. I really wanted to like this place but sadly I cannot. I'm not sure there are even "kinks" to work out. It's just not good enough to compete and probably will be the next village wharf but definitely better off than the cedar knoll. read more

We REALLY want River Bend to succeed as we live in the neighborhood and have wanted a good local place for a while. The Good: Convenient, friendly staff, quality food. What needs improvement: 1. I realize it is sparsely decorated on purpose but it could use a warmer feel. Parts of it are "warm" like where the wines are displayed but overall it doesn't feel like a place you would sit with your friends for a couple of hours over apps and a few drinks. 2. There really need to be a few things on both the entree and apps menus that are normal. Not that you want to turn it into a sports bar and have fried cheese sticks and potato skins, but a few items like grilled wings (not fried Buffalo like a sports bar but grilled with an asian sauce or something similar if you want to keep with your theme), a baked brie, guacamole bowl with chips, or fries (frites drizzled in truffle oil if you want to maintain the fancy theme), crab cake, and calamari, would be great. The same concept on entrees. Fish tacos, a burger option, some sort of grilled chicken, etc. Finally, we found the wine by the glass menu pretty much wanting. How about one nice white and one nice Napa Cab. Price how you must but the offering was meh. By way of comparison, Virtue in Old Town went through something similar. They made changes to their menu to make it more of a place where groups would want to go, linger, spend their evenings and their money. Came here for my first time earlier this week, and I thought I'd put together a short write-up. I had heard about River Bend Bistro after the demise of one of my favorite local wine shops, Rick's Wine and Gourmet. Some of the former Rick's folks ended up here and I saw a posting on Facebook. Anyway... The restaurant is in a small strip mall. Outward appearance is simple, but clean and quite new. Once inside, I saw the simple ambience continue. The floor is polished concrete, the walls are brick (or brick facade), and the lighting is utilitarian. Not like any French bistro I'm familiar with, but certainly in fitting with the notion of not being upscale. Seating was also simple, but clean and comfortable. The menu is relatively short, but there were several things on it that looked interesting to me. It seemed to fit well with a bistro model. Simple, but excellent is what I'm looking for here. I started with a cold asparagus soup. NOT a cream based soup, but a broth based one. I normally don't go for cold soups, but asparagus is in season and I thought I'd give it a whirl. Loved it. Mildly salty, and smooth as water. They must have filtered this after pureeing it, I'm thinking. Either way, it was a light weight refreshing starter. Oh, and we'd ordered some prosecco and (for me) a Bell's Oberon wheat beer by then as well. All played well together. For my main course, I had the seared scallops over a bed of white beans, drizzled with a basil oil mix. This was the star of the show for me, without a doubt. The scallops were seared but still quite rare on the inside, just as I like them. The beans were perfect, and the basil oil mix complemented them great. I rarely get desserts, but the blueberry cobbler was more than I could resist, so I had it. Also excellent. Warm berry mixture with some puff pastry chunks on top and a small portion of vanilla ice cream. I also had a glass of rioja to go with my main course. It was excellent. The wine list itself wasn't huge, and lacked "trophy wines", which I eschew in any case. It had a bunch of my old friends from Rick's on it, though. No surprises there. But the list definitely has something for everyone, and the wine prices are quite fair. Overall, I'm a huge fan. I don't expect a bistro to have fancy decor or ambience, and River Bend certainly doesn't. Don't come here expecting a restaurant. It's a bistro. But do come here expecting superb food, and you won't be disappointed. I'll definitely be back! read more

I live in the neighborhood and have seen restuarants at this location come and go. I had been meaning to come when this restaurant opened up 3 years ago. Yesterday I thought I would check it out. The menu didn;t impress and is pricey. So I did the next best thing and thought I would try a wine. I had 3 glasses of Four Bears Cabernet Sauvignon at $12 a piece. Each glass of wine was no more than 5 to 6 ozs,, more like 5 ounces. The bottle of about 25 ounces retails at $16. The ambiance isn't that great either to merit such an exorbitant markup of 375 percent. Interestingly a Grey Goose Martini is the same price per glass so go figure. I do not think I am coming here again. Overpriced for the quality of the restaurant, pretentious I think.. read more

Went here for a special occasion and had high expectations for a newish location in an area desperately needing some non chain restaurant, higher end dining. It did not meet my expectations. However, that's not to say it was a bad experience by any means. The prices were high but definitely not DC or old town Alexandria high. The ambience was like a nice bistro and the service was excellent (although I wish they had done something or even said anything for the bday since we mentioned and made an opentable review. No chilis sombrero or song needed just some acknowledgement). The menu was great and and had a lot of different tasty sounding options. One of those times you coordinate with others at your table so that you get to try several dishes because it's hard to decide. The fancy tater tot/latkes were ok but nothing special there. The salads were very large and tasty though. When it came to the entrees they were all good. However, everything was somewhat over salted and over sauced. And just missing something to elevate it from a simple meal you could make at home. The duck was cooked well but I didn't care much for the sauce. The scallops were large and cooked perfectly other than the salt but the beans and flavor were lacking something extra. The fries were weird and thin with the ribeye. The steak was the best meal by far. Overall decent but I just hoped for more in a place I could make a regular spot in my neighborhood for my family and to recommend to others. Was really surprised to discover this place in a strip mall near my aunt's house. Really good food and an interesting menu. It was still busy when we arrived at 3pm for a late lunch. I got the duck confit salad which was delicious. I forget what the others got, but they also really liked their meals. The wine was also very good. Pretty reasonable prices too. I'd recommend this for anyone in the neighborhood looking for a nice restaurant. read more

Due to the noise, the slightly overpriced wine, and the lack of seasoning (just a little more please), four stars. Otherwise, five stars. Really, this trip was 4.5 stars. Many have mentioned the ambiance. It is "warehousy" but it's nice, clean, and comfortable. Especially in the evening. The service is impeccable. We ordered the house made charcuterie (this evening, a pate) which was delicious. We had a bit of it left but had eaten all of the sliced bread that accompanied it and our server, without inquiry, brought over a few more slices so we could enjoy the pate with the bread and mustard. The service stayed at that lovely "NYC style service of 15 years ago" level for the entire meal. When our water glasses were 3/4 empty, he showed up to refill. I noticed he and another server standing at the edge of the dining room, watching. That's how you do it. Well done! Ditto for the host, a young man who ran my "doggie bag" or rather "doggie box" of risotto out to me after I forgot it. We ordered two glasses of red. Both were pretty good. I liked mine enough that my spouse googled it to find where we could buy it and found it was only a $15 bottle (genuinely surprised). My glass was $9. I understand that polishing wine glasses, refrigeration, and uncorking are in included in (labor, utilities) that cost but it still seemed a smidge high. Our entrees were perfectly cooked, nicely presented, but needed a little more seasoning. Just a bit of salt and pepper. My spouse's fish had that lovely crunchy skin that wasn't ruined by placing other ingredients on top of the fish (like SO many other chefs do). My risotto was the right consistency but fell a little flat on flavor (just a little more s&p). The noise: there are high hard ceilings here that bounce all of the chatter back down at you. The place was 5/6 full and I had to almost yell so I could my spouse could hear me. Please put some baffling up there. We'll definitely be back. But not too often. Good ingredients cooked perfectly and served well are not cheap. I am just not rich (working on that, aren't we all?). Looking forward to the next trip south to Fort Hunt (and the cheese, charcuterie, wine, and that mac and cheese). read more

Finally I went to the River Bend Bistro, I call it the Bistro and Roy the owner actually seated us. While there is no décor as of yet the food was prepared as advertised to the level of a five star restaurant. EXCELLENT. I had an oyster starter, and salmon, perfectly done. It is close to my house, and I will go back again, I don't drink but they do have a full bar and excellent wine selection. Service was attentive and excellent. We really needed a decent restaurant here near Belle Haven community. FINALLY, I look forward to just relaxing and now being able to take out of town guests to a place to eat other than Ruby Tuesday on Route one or mickyDs Great Job, Roy and I think his wife's name was Connie who is the chef. read more

We read the Yelp reviews which were 75%negative. We decided to give the Bistro a try anyways since we like to support local businesses and were excited to have a restaurant open in Hollin Hall. Unfortunately the negative reviews were accurate. 2 half glasses of wine and two 3 inch pieces of toast(flat bread appetizer) Came to $20. It took 15 minutes for our appetizer to arrive and it tasted awful. The decor is discount bin with recycled blonde church pews and dated tables. The 70's rock and roll music also did not help the ambience. The wait staff was poorly trained and stood in a line against the wall looking bored. The dinner menu price range was in the mid twenties. There were no options for kids. My girlfriend and I decided to go to a different restaurant in old town. Our cocktail, appetizer. Split entree and desert came to $20. Better ambience and value for our money. Unless this Bistro changes their menu, lowers their prices and improves the ambience they will be out of business with in 6 months. read more

The River Bend Bistro has hit its stride! The menu is mature, well constructed, and healthy and the service was lightning quick and genuinely pleasant. We started of with the fig/goat cheese appetizer. It was absolutely delicious. For entrees our party of four had the tuna with eggplant veggies; chicken porcini pasta; the lamb chop; and shad roe special. All of the dishes were perfectly prepared. The tuna was the best I've had since I left San Diego a decade ago. Despite early challenges, the River Bend is an outstanding local spot for creative fare in a warm, comfortable environment. We live locally but have not eaten at River Bend before due a menu that is somewhat limited and seems a bit pretentious. (When The Wharf closed we hoped a good, basic, neighborhood restaurant/bar would move in). We finally went to brunch today hoping we would enjoy it and be able to frequent it on weekends for breakfast. I ordered eggs over medium with bacon. The eggs were so overcooked they were not edible. Overall: we all liked our meals very much, and they were good portions. It is always hard to decide on how many stars for a good place. There is certainly no way this compares to a true 5 Star DC restaurant like Komi or Citronelle. But for a neighborhood restaurant it is very good. The food is well prepared, interesting and well presented. The night we were there the staff was a little in the weeds, but that happens. The bar is very basic. I asked for a couple whiskey based cocktails and the waitress came back and said they don't carry that "brand". But I wasn't asking for a brand! Settled for Maker's Mark on the rocks, which is a fine way to go. I would go back and would recommend it to my friends. read more

We stopped in for a drink and a snack, and wound up getting a second round of both. The decor is modern and uncluttered. The service was excellent - we sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly yet not intrusive. He seemed generally interested in why we had decided to come in and how we heard of the place (but maybe that's since they're newish!). The beer selection is fairly limited, but the ones they have are varied and all of good quality. We tried four items: terryaki chicken bites, eggplant flatbread, oysters, and tater tots - and all were absolutely delicious. My family and I have enjoyed a number of meals at River Bistro. One evening I tried the ribeye steak. It is rare that I like a steak at a restaurant better than I can grill at home. This is the exception. The steak was fantastic. Since then, I had an accident and broke my wrist badly. I was advised to consume as much protein as I can, and my body tells me the same thing with a craving for steak. Therefore I've had the opportunity to have steak a number of times recently at different venues. The River Bend Ribeye is by far the best of them all. We decided to try River Bend Bistro for the first time today on a special occasion because it is near the former Wharf, which is what we really wanted. It was a positive experience. My. Vernon is desperately in need of more dining establishments, and River Bend Bistro fits the bill for its friendly, attentive service, attractive decor, and good (perhaps not great) food. The menu prices are moderate; the price of our meal was slightly less than we paid on our last visit to Via Veneto. If you want a lively, loud place with tables a little close together, River Bend Bistro approaches perfection. For our anniversary, we would have preferred the more intimate booths like the Wharf, but you won't find that here. Still, it's a welcome addition to Mt. Vernon. For the excellent service, we will return. read more

Juuuuuuussst around the river beeeeennnnddd! Oh if only this wine bar was all up Pocahontas themed I would be super amazed and come here all the time! But alas it is a bit more toned down and the usual of any suburbia shopping mart restaurant. We wanted to try something new in the neighborhood and although we had been to the Hollins Hall Variety Store several times, which is a fave place to go to!, we never tried the restaurants in this area. True to yelp* form, I used the app to find this place and decided to try it for dinner last night. Although it is the beginning of March, they still had their winter menu but it was cold enough so we went with it. Their menu was surprisingly limited and things I would not think of as apps were, e.g. a salad. I like sharable apps and the only ones I saw were charcuterie and what we thought were gonna be tater tots but ended up looking like hush-puppies with caramelized onions....they were pretty good but not what I expected. For my main course I decided to get their special risotto of the night which had salmon and spinach in it. My husband got the lamb shank....ok those two dishes were actually quite delish! The entrees are quite heavy though so go only if you are huuungry. We got dessert and got the torte looking cake and it was alright...kind of tasted like a Debbie cake kind of filling pie. And for a wine bar, I thought I'd be seeing flights or some exotic wines but nope...I ended up just having two glasses of their menu set pinot grigio so nothing super exciting to discover from their wine menu. And for ambience, it's a bit bright but quite clean a la strip mall fancy. Service was friendly and our food and drinks came out without any super long waits. My waiter did forget a side dish I ordered but it was no biggie since I was full from my entree, but it is hard to forget that the waiter absolutely forgot my order and it was not a packed house in there.... I still want my Pocahontas themed restaurant especially since we are in freakign historic northern Virginia of all places! Aaaah what an awesome idea...but I digress.....I guess a trip down to Disney will do for now. read more

Napkins with red stripes are clearly dishcloths purchased to use as napkins Lights need to be dimmed in evening more for intimate atmosphere. I completely disagree with a few reviewers who suggest they should make it more family-friendly because it is a "neighborhood" restaurant. There are literally 100s of family-friendly restaurants in the Rt 1/Groveton area, and we don't need another one. Just my opinion. And parents need a nice place nearby to go for nights out away from "family style". But, if the restaurant did add a bistro burger or some mini-sliders with pomme frites to the menu, I'm sure that would work fine. read more

So I stumbled across the River Bend Bistro & Wine Bar by complete chance. I was out for a walk, and there it was. I decided to give it a go, and I was not disappointed. Wonderful food. Good wine selection and truly amenable staff. The quality of all the food I ordered was fantastic. I had a bowl of gazpacho, and it tasted like summer. Fresh, snappy and tangy. I had an order of the Italian sausage flat bread, and the flavors were sublime. I also ordered the garlic mozarella flat bread: awesome! I will be coming back soon to show this place off to my wife. This is the first review I've ever written, but here it goes... The area is in need of nice restaurants, yet we had none. This is the first one to spring up - though I am a bit disappointed. The prices are not reasonalbe - mid twenties $$ for a chicken breast and very little pasta is not a good deal. I am used to paying for quality food - but the steak that my husband ordered was around $28 and very fatty, while lacking flavor. The menu stated it came with shoestring french fries, but they were more like potato chips than fries (yes, I know shoestring is supposed to be thin and crunchier - but these were like chips). Like the other review on the 'flatbread' I am confused...it's plainly bruscetta (toasted bread with toppings). Now, I hope they will make the necessary changes, i.e. bistro burger, one or two family friendly entrees (not every member of our families like specilized foods) and/or great salad so, that they may be sucessful. We need a place to stop off at the end of a work day for a glass of wine, good food and chat with neighbors. All in all, not bad for the first week open but, they need to listen to their patrons and add a few more items that are family friendly. Remember, this is a neighborhood restaurant. read more

It was our first time here and we found our new favorite spot! The food is absolutely delicious. We had the daily risotto and the spinach and ricotta agnolotti. Service was great, and the wine choices are nice as well! Will definitely be back soon! read more
